Gear wrench is so underrated; people talk about HF bringing great deals and competition, but Gear wrench has been out here providing the best value and sometimes even the objectively best tools for a while now. Their wrenches have toped the project farm charts twice while being pretty cheap, and now they are even providing diagnostic equipment with no subscription? Gear wrenches are absolute W's.
As someone who owns a lot of Gearwrench for hobby use, I'd stress that it is not high end and they're not what I'd call professional spec tools. Most of their range is decent value if purchased on sale (Gearwrench markup is high vs SATA and the OEM rebrands like Quinn) I have experienced QC issues with tolerances and aesthetics, would have returned several items if I'd paid the ridiculously high original RRP, but everything I own was bought at a steep discount and on clearance when a hardware store stopped carrying the gearwrench line likely due to the ridiculous RRP in Australia and the resulting low sales The locking flex mechanism on my 90T's all have sloppy tolerances but somehow work ok and I haven't broken any of them *yet*. Will be interesting to see if icon's ripoff of the locking flex mechanism is implemented with better tolerances

There are some good tool manufacterers out there with fine products. Has anyone noticed the up-tick wave of quality and innovation from HF? They are vastly improving their entire product line as we speak like no other company ive seen. Having the convienience of localized stores and a no- hassle return policy on many products has captured the interest of shoppers for many years. Now, more than ever, the company seems to be returning its commitment to its consumer base by delivering in house, developed tool categories which are directly competing with, and setting new benchmarks thoughout the tool spectrums abroad. To this I say thank you HF for bringing to "us the customer" quality offerings at a reasonable prices and warranty configurations. 👍
That icon locking flex head design looks JUST like the one that matco uses. The teeth on the matco design like to wear out so that when you put a little pressure, the head flexes even when the lock is engaged. The lock is STILL engaged when it flexes too. Ive already replaced the head on my matco ratchet and it still has the same problem. I hope that icon uses a better material so that this doesnt become an issue
Question- on your Marco locking flex head, does the head slide smoothly when unlocked or does it click into different positions going from one side to the other? I want a totally smooth action when unlocked because I always find myself in between “clicks” of a multi-point position flex head. I want to be able to use it unlocked and lock it if it happens to line up where I need it. If that makes sense. Thx
I don't see much particularly rule-breaking about the GW scanners. The prices are OK and the updates are very good for consumers but only sorta-good on the tablet - just an extra year in the bundle. Glad to see the TwinGrip sizes. Like the clips too. Hate the click-baity thumbnail (A) because you didn't address it in the video and (B) because you know it wasn't "stolen".
They are pretty cool though BlueDriver and Topdon have been doing this already. But I do want to see more of these scan tools that utilize a pre-existing smart device. Most modern cars have tablets built right into the headunit so it's nice for a consumer to just buy a smaller piece of hardware and software and not have to drop hundreds on a tablet when they likely already have one.
It would have been great if the Gearwrench Tablet offered lifetime updates like the Thinkscan 689. The addition of topology with lifetime updates would have been awesome. That other dongle seems to be a rebranded XTOOL A30M, which I own, and it works great.
@TitusandTesla For the price, they’re right up there with the other manufacturers offering that feature. The software looks identical to Xtool, so it might just be a rebranded D7 or something from Xtool’s mid-range lineup. I’m in the market for a scanner, but at the $1,000 price point, they all seem to offer similar features. Gearwrench missed a great opportunity-adding topology and lifetime updates would really shake up the market. All Thinkscan needs to do is add that feature with an update on the 689, and it would be a game-changer. I understand that R&D costs money, but having to pay a minimum of $350 (or even thousands) yearly for a software update on a tablet that already cost nearly a grand or way more is disappointing.

Just today I was thinking like hmm maybe it is better to build your plier set as individual pliers/brands due to being able to distinguish them apart. Then I proceeded to watch this video where he talked about color coated clips in the handle. What are the chances but glad to see!
The locking mechanism looks reminiscent of Matco's. Either way, im not much of a comfort grip guy so Ill drop some money on the standard handle locking and non locking ratchets.

HF fanboy's can finally get nice ratchets I've had similar ratchets to all these in other brand for years
Thanks for the video and reviews. Its always a great time when new tools are revealed. Grip Edge, the tools i love to get but hope i never use them. On mobile so i couldn't see it very well. Was the HF soft grip handle oval? Like the Tekton style.
Because it isn't set in stone yet and the price to bring it to market might change within a year or so. Cost of materials, manufacturing, and shipping fluctuates. If they told us a price today and later they realize they can bring it to market for less at the same profit margins it would be a marketing blunder on their end. First Impressions are important and it could kill the hype around a new product if they name too high of a price, or conversely if they name too low of a price and then it hits stores and ends up costing more than what was originally announced it could piss a lot of people off and once again kill the hype surrounding a new tool. Some of these new tools could also be a sort of prototype and they are just gauging reactions to it to see if it is even viable to try to sell, or they may make changes between now and the planned release and that could also alter pricing.
Also can someone go to the craftsman booth? They are supposed to have a sema booth this year. I really want to know what’s going on and why it seems many of the v series ratchets and wrenches and screwdrivers are being discontinued or clearanced.

Easy way is to take the nuts off the motor mounts, take the dog bone/pitch stop off, jack up the engine by the oil pan (use a 2x4 on the jack pad) and lift.

That grip edge stuff sounds great, but it’s way too expensive. Those bits don’t hardly cost anymore to manufacture and they jack up the prices because it’s new.
Its not new its been out for a while now. Mac had the exclusive rights to them calling them RBRT. same company that makes them for Mac. even the foam inserts and cases are the same only difference is mac cases are red and say mac vs grip edge.
man I don't know how I feel about some of this stuff; it's like we need a specialty tool for everything these days. How many variants of Torx do we need? Do we really need tamper-proof Trox extractors? I feel like half of the tools coming to market are specialty stuff that we hopefully will never touch rather than basic tools that allow us to do the normal jobs more effectively. I love tools, but I honestly hate watching content when it's about new hyperspecific BS because I may end up needing it for some BS reason from some automotive or electronics company. The gear wrench booth gave me some hope. They didn't come in with another generic line promising new functionality that we don't need; they came in and said, "The amateurs deserve to have all the info the pros do" and gave us a tool with ZERO subscription (as far as I can tell). That's all I have wanted to hear for the past 6 months. I want to own what I buy; I don't want some attached cost. I don't want to keep rebuying crap. You did the work designing and manufacturing it once, so I should only have to pay for it ONCE. I feel like our parents and grandparents could've gotten away with no more than a single tool box worth of tools, now that's the bare minimum required to fix most basic stuff on most cars. Also, is wiha really selling all the tools with that mini box? I doubt any person who doesn't already have all those tools would want to spend that kind of money on that quality right out of the gate. They would sell way more of them if they didn't come with anything. It's like premium version of the recently very popular mini boxes.
