If Notre Dame goes undefeated and gets the 5 seed because of thr conference championship rules, they get most likely the g5 team at home and then the weakest of the p4 champs neutral before going to the semifinals and playing a difficult matchup. They skip out on conference championship week where they could lose anyways and miss out on a bye causing an extra game overall so they get an extra week of playoff prep vs say the loser of the SEC Championship and have 1 less game than said loser.

Yep. Swarbrick not only agreed to this but helped propose it. Some years not being in conference hurts them and some years it helps. Getting a home playoff game in December against a G5 team is a pretty good consolation if this scenario ever happens.

ND gets the bye during Conference championship week, if they are #1 then they go to 5 they would play the 12th seed which is going to be a team like Liberty this year because the group of 5 team gets that bid. Then if they win that game they play the 4th ranked team now they are in the semi finals after playing the easiest playoff schedule. Thats what ND agreed too. IF they are #1 they get a bye and beat Liberty the next week then game on.

  • @cdolan13
    @cdolan13 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

Independence for Notre Dame is historical, as when they beat Michigan for the first time in 1909, UM's coach, Fielding Yost (who had a lot of pull in the 'Western Conference' at the time (later to become the Big 10) blacklisted Notre Dame from ever joining the conference and advocated against naming ND as 1909 National Champions.
That was a blessing in disguise, as it formed Knute Rockne's decision (with full University backing) to look throughout the country for any and all of the best teams to play, which led to arguably the greatest intersectional rivalry with USC.
So, not only is Notre Dame's independence historical, but emotional - as well as necessary, as teams continue to combine into what will most likely end up becoming one huge powerhouse conglomeration to where conferences will no longer matter. Look no further than the PAC 12.
(So now shouldn't everyone - including the National media - be calling it the 'Power 4'?)
It's all just ridiculous because it's all about money to where college football will leave the NCAA behind and declare themselves one big semi-pro league.
    I apologize for the rant.

Yeah, if anything the current setup works out really well for ND. If they are a top 5 team they essentially get a BYE during conference championships week, then they play the lowest seeded playoff team at home (possibly a G5 team), and then they get a game against whoever is the lowest seed P4 conference champion (assuming G5 team isn’t in top 4). After that they’d have to play the 1 seed if they win all those, but once you get to the final 4 there likely won’t be any easy matchups left anyways.

I think the point is to MAKE the Playoff.
Forst of all, you can't win the College Football Championship if you don't make the Playoffs.
    Simple fact.
And on making the Playoffs, you are now 1 of 12 Teams that CAN win the Championship.
Regardless of past results, Notre Dame must MAKE the Playoffs first and foremost, and I believe they will.
And once they are there, then why couldn't they have a .agical run and win it all? Why couldn't they be good enough to defeat the teams in front of them?
It has happened before. Teams do surprise us quite often, and there are several underdogs who have won a Championship.
Lets just look at last season...
I would bet that less than 0.00001% of the fans of College Football had Michigan vs Washington for the National Championship BEFORE the Season.
So, again, the key is to MAKE the Tournament. The you will find out if your team is good enough to go on that magical run...

Notre Dame secured a bye every single season. Every other team aspiring for a 1st round bye, at season's end, is playing in a conference championship game. The rest of college football, either they are playing in a conference championship game, or they probably aren't good enough to be seeded 5-8 to have a 1st round home game.
Say Notre Dame gets in as 5 seed. They have a home game against 12 seed the 1st round. That 12 seed is probably the 6th conference champ to get in, so they just played a championship game. Next round, is a neutral site game against the weakest of the Power 4 champs That team could actually be ranked somewhere around 10-15, but seeding doesn't follow ranking. 3rd round, Notre Dame is playing the 1 or the 8 seed, again a neutral site game.
Notre Dame got exactly what it wanted:
Access to the playoff while independent.
The chance to host a playoff game.

Ill take an annual knute rockne bowl at ND stadium in December round 1 and a conference championship bye (against probably OSU/Oregon) over a 1st round bye any day lol...
But like seriously a round 1 game at home is so cool (espically if not coming off a loss) and to have it be an almost regular option is very favorable for ND in football(recruiting, relationship building with other schools) and (maybe more importantly sorry : /) out of football... when you compare that with the idea of getting a shot to go play a top 3/2 team (talk about injury potential coming right after long regular season) but miss the opportunity for home bowl game if you win (best case scenario) and if you lose now you probably have to go on the road to some really tough school and play in round 1 anyway (talk about much harder path to the championship now and a true worst case scenerio). Why would we join the Big ten? We are on national tv 11 times per year in the last 10 years. The big ten can’t guarantee that. We are on national TV way more than any other program it’s part of our identity. Not to mention Notre Dame probably would not be open to equal revenue sharing because they believe there brand is more valuable than most Big Ten brands (the exceptions being Michigan, Ohio State, and USC) ND is the biggest team in 2 of the top 3 biggest TV markets in the US Chicago and NYC and the biggest brand in Boston. What’s the allure that the Big Ten gives us? Rivalry games? Money we already have? Prestige we already have? The fact of the matter is the ND admin would never agree to a conference without being treated as favorites as being on national television every week is a big deal to them.

a lot of room between national championship level and winning a playoff game in the first round. ND fans like to pretend its championship or bust but in reality it would be a successful season--and a step forward for the program--if we win a playoff game. Since I've been alive, Notre Dame has never won a big postseason game, and yet ND fans pretend it Chip or bust. If we win a playoff game against a top 4 SEC or solid Big Ten program or whatever thats a good season and building momentum towards the future.

Look at the first round playoff, even if we are ranked #1-4, as our quasi conference championship.
And no, your hypothetical won’t change many minds. There is too much history behind our independence, including repeated rejections by the Big “10” on religious grounds central to the mission of the University, for alumni to be easily swayed to join it. We don’t fit in the SEC or the Big 12. The ACC might be a fit, but it may not exist much longer.

  • @joshuafinn6038
    @joshuafinn6038 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Josh youre better than this.
You know the bye week is just reversed for ND and Power Teams.
ND has a bye whilst the top 4 generally battle a top 10 opponent in week 13.
Then they have a week off when ND plays a top 10 opponent.
This is fair. Most Notre Dame fans consider this 1st round as our new "conference championship game".
Its totally fair to have to prove we belong, just like the P4 teams do. and if we cant win it, then we wouldnt have won a conference title either....

So Josh any team that gets a bye week plays a conference championship game, a 13th game, Notre dame does not so they play 12 games, Notre Dame not getting a bye = 13th game.
A 13th with more time to prepare and get healthy.
Its the same amount of games my brother in christ.
I would rather get to the playoffs and lose round 1 then get to a conference championship, lose and then not make the playoffs or not get a bye anyways

It will always be like 2012. ND get is in - then gets run off the field. ND has not won a major post season game since 1993. They are not gonna win 3 in one season any time soon - if ever. Some people might say the fact they consistently get in major post season game and consistently get blown out mean they are over rated - but not Josh - but some people - but not Josh. Anyway, I guess the fact ND has not been able to prove it's high rank is valid at the end of the season FOR 30+ years just does not mean anything. Just bad ND luck since Holzt left.

ND’s schedule isn’t the strongest this year….However, Ohio State, Oregon and Texas all have a strength of schedule outside of the top 25 for the 2024 season. Oregon is 30th OSU and Texas are tied for 34th. ND at 41st is still higher than Utah, Auburn, Tennessee, Miami, Penn State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Ole Miss! SOME of these teams are ranked AHEAD of ND in pre-season rankings. Yet, oddly enough…..Nobody seems to have an issue with THEIR schedules. 🤔

Let's consider this... expanding the playoffs will also expand recruiting. Now a 5 star recruit won't feel pressured to choose bama, Georgia or OSU because they simply just want to make the playoffs. Now these talented 4 and 5 star guys can pick the school they really wanted to go to like an FSU or Iowa or Oklahoma state and very likely make the playoffs and still go to the school of their dreams or the school their dad played at etc
