So Mariah had been working as an in studio Backup singer during her teen years, for many various artists. She eventually landed a Full time Backup Singer job for 80s Pop artist, Brenda K . Starr. Branda had never heard Mariah sing & was Truly Blown Away. She asked her why she was singing backup cause she should be recording her own music to share with the world. Brenda was signed to Sony/Columbia records and at an Industry party , Tommy Motolla (label president) happened to be there . Brenda brings Mariah's (who carried her Demo Tape on her) (she had intended to really help Mariah land a deal) Begrudgingly, Tommy accepts it and leaves the party. He pops the tape in his Limo, not expecting anything specific. He's Gobsmacked by what he's hearing & orders the driver to immediately turn around and go back to the party, iso Mariah. By the time he gets there, the ladies had left already. He eventually gets a hold of Mariah, signs her & the rest is history. Debuting in 1990 w/Vision of Love , She achieved at least 1 #1 song every year of the entire decade (the only artist ever) and by the end of 1999 , she had already accumulated 14 #1's (with only 1 song being a Cover, I'll Be There by Jackson 5) all other 13 are original songs all written by her.

I remember where I was when I first heard this song. Had to be 91 or 92....I was in college....my roommate had one of those huge Cadillac's....like a boat....Yellow. I borrowed it to run an errand, was going over a speed bump on campus, and this song came on. One of the all-time greats. Funny that the only other song I remember where I was when I first heard it was Royals, by Lourdes....from 2013.

Her demo landed in Tommy Mottola's hands at the time he was Columbia Records head , when he left the party he decided to play the demo, when he heard her potential he asked the driver to return to the party because that was probably the best voice hes ever heard. Offered her a contract immediately and the legend was born and then Mottola became her first husband but she dumped him because he was possessive, he didn't allow her to leave the house, no visitors, and cameras EVERYWHERE so he knew exactly where she was at all times. He even threatened her with a knife at dinner to her face in front of his children
