Cambridge Analytica's Kogan Says The Facebook Data Is Still Out There: “someone did not delete it”

  • The Cambridge University researcher at the center of the Facebook data scandal has appeared before a British parliamentary committee investigating fake news.
Aleksandr Kogan was working for Cambridge University when he designed a personality testing app which gathered the data of tens of millions of Facebook users.
That data was passed on to political consultancy Cambridge Analytica without user consent, and is alleged to have been used to try and influence voters in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Kogan told VICE News that he believes a copy of that data is still available, even though Kogan and Cambridge Analytica assured Facebook it had deleted the data. Kogan has said he deleted the data.
"I mean I lost my career for sure," Kogan told VICE News. "Like It’ll be very difficult for me to ever be an academic anywhere."
Since being branded a liar by Facebook for his role in the affair, Kogan has been on a road to try and clear his name.
VICE News joined Kogan before - and after - his visit to Britain's parliament.

The interview is too general.... There are tons of unanswered questions, e.g: why kogan didn't delete all the data when fb demanded them to do so in back then? And what's the industry practices for developers is the norm?

What I dont really get: analytica didnt do anything illegal. They used data, that was online and publicly available. The real problem is, that there are no ways to deny them to do so.

"I didn't break the TOS, because others did too" is not a valid excuse Aleksandr. This is a failure to self regulate on behalf of the developers, while Facebook have been asleep at the wheel and not providing the necessary oversight of how personal information in their care is being accessed and used.

First, Kogan has an appointment in St-Petersburg University - interestingly, the same very city where all Putin's mafia was originated, and the same very city where Russia keeps main work force of young "online writers" fabricating false ID-s in facebook and other platforms to play their political games... Isn't it a nice coincidence of Kogan's affiliation...? So, of course he is a "professor of semantics", so well-trained to play with words in a right way. But second, the Big Five personality test is forced by its authors onto thousands of users on the Facebook or many dating sites without warning that the data will be used for publications or other use. Then these academicians promote their careers by publishing juicy reports from their "massive studies" even though the consent of participants was not received, and the test itself if rather pathetic. Hey, psychologists - don't you have to have a consent for your studies, why your professional associations are staying silent in this scandal? Perhaps, because authors of the Big Five are having top management positions in your organizations? This means that after all this noise nothing will change, and Big Five psychologists will continue publishing the data obtained by Cambridge with subsequence promotion. And the Putin-Cambridge links will only be reinforced.

Everyone involved in this data collection are the bad guys, no exceptions. The people on the one dumbasses friends and family list didn't give permission for their data to be collected...they didn't fill out the survey. Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't make it any better. It's like that saying "If your friend jumped off a bridge would you? "

So let me get this straight, a PhD from Cambridge squire data then sold it to to a data analytics firm and now is feigning ignorance and playing the victim. Should really reasonably believe that a researcher in psychology was completely unaware of the importance of valuing patient data and the unethical ramifications of selling data to said firm.
Nice PR campaign mate they should throw the book at you.

You got to love the boo hoo story about losses and how he didn't get as much money as oil barrons so he shouldn't have to answer the question. This is just a way to shift blame and make it an ethical mistake on behalf of honest optimistic acedemics who put profit before all scientific and academic considerations.
I don't think people should take their eye off the ball and let this blame game and attempt to rationalize and justify the behavior using psychology distract from the issues. This is just a clever misdirection play using the same data they used to engineer society in the first place.
If we are busy arguing the twofold strategy of blaming ethical conundrums and buying into rationalized justifications of sociopaths masquerading as academics, we miss the point of the real whistle-blowers intention in the first place. They sweep it back under the rug, rename it something else, and the same people who really do the work keep doing the work, while actors mask their real identies and keep them anonymous behind the scenes. The game is rigged and whistle-blowers are rarely ever placed in the spotlight if ever. It is all smoke and mirrors to keep us ignorant. It is destroying us from within.
