Paul, whenever I look for equipment demos, I get excited when I see that you did one because you get the best sounds out of stuff in an in-depth but very concise way.
I saw him at an airport 2 days ago and went up to him, and we had a small talk, and he said other reviewers put through a very compressed sound, so you don't really hear what the product is meant to sound like. But he puts forth a personal effort to make it sound as raw as possible, so you can hear whatever the products really meant to do.
I got this pedal about a month ago and it will forever stay in my pedal board! It definitely won my heart as soon as I played it and heard the high gain tone. I play through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III, mainly on its clean channel, and this pedal helped me get a near Marshall half stack-like tone. Definitely recommend it for anyone with a clean combo amp!
Appreciate ya' bro - so many people demo - ing high gain distortion pedals by constant soloing on the neck pickup of their Stratocaster (or tele) I can't tell what the distortion pedal sounds like - thanks for playing crunchy rythym patterns on a bridge humbucker - now I can hear what that pedal does! 👍
Great pedal! I tried one at a friend's place. I'm getting one soon. I've owned a lot of MXR pedals over the years, including an original Distortion Plus from the 70s, the same kind Rhoads used, and also their Phase 90, Chorus, and man others. I dig Boss pedals too but MXR just does something special.
I tried this one is person at a story and I can promise you guys it sounds amazing! I played it through a Fender deluxe and a les paul standard. And for those of you who criticize the tone in this video, the pedal can actually sound good. Never mind the treble issues here. :-)
Is this a pedal or foot switch? Ultimate badass distortion.. put preamp volume to 10, put master volume to 10. Valve amp. Put the gain knob about 11 o'clock.
i know this was a long time ago but what clean settings were you using and on what amp please? if you can remember, im running clean channel on my hughes and kettner tubemiester1mid at 9 oclock treble and bass 12 oclock and gain at 10am and it sounds great with the settings that you used in the very beginning, awesome pedal.... this video made me take it out and use it and i havent touched it in over a year, thanx bud
Great playing but the pedal...?... why do I keep finding pedals demos that show off the "player" and not the pedal??? Maybe I'll start doing my own demos haha
How much is this going for? I just bought the blue Bogner...playing it through a 1977 fender super reverb tube amp with original speakers 180 watt , the mutha sounds bad to the Boner...
"Most ultimate distortion pedal ever made" huh? What about the Effectrode Blackbird? Pretty sure that (and many other pedals) can run circles around this thing.
I'm starting to get into heavier metal and I want a cheap pedal (under $50 or $100) metal distortion/gain pedal that isn't ds-1 distortion (already have it). Please! Anyone! Help!
This pedal might sound good in your bedroom on a practice amp but how does it react in a band situation? Does it get lost in the mix or does it cut through with power and clarity like I'm hoping it does? This could possibly be my next purchase.
It cuts through really well surprisingly. I've used it for studio recordings through a Mesa Boogie Express and it cut really well. I usually have a boost plugged in right behind it but on it's own it sounds amazing. I made a VoxAC30 sound like a Marshall on steroids, no joke.
I use One Control Pedals though. They're designed by the man who makes Mad Professor Pedals. They're around $150, well worth the money. They're really responsive and dynamic, I use active pick ups and can still tell of the dynamic range in these pedals. Also the size is really convenient.
would be nice to see it with good pickups and not passive stock gibson ones. They are good just not for demoing a distortion pedal. Please use correct guitars for the correct type of sounds. If we're going to buy this pedal we most likely will have active pickups and would like to hear that type of sound. They would give a better sound to the pedal overall.
i see the distortion control is stuck in this demo ....wtf give the drive a wiggle so we got a low to high gain instead of wanking around randomly twiddleing the eq

Hey you still use this pedal 6 years later?
Great jamming and great demonstration. I'm 63 and I've only been playing for a year. I hope to someday get half as good as you are.
11 years after you posted this video and you just helped me choose this distortion over several others. Well done. Thank you! ☮️☮️
I own it. Best pedal I've ever used. Then if you add a ten band Eq on top you're golden
May be a dumb question but does this blow away the metal zone or similar? Thanks
+Michael Penny oh yeah, it's got a super warm tone. honestly the best consumer friendly priced pedal out there
Glad to hear it´s warm ´cuz here it doesn´t sound that warm, might be the amp though.
1analist it's a VERY warm toned pedal. Makes an entire room shake haha
what amp do you use with this pedal? mine sounds like shit.
It sounds like a Fullbore Metal crossed with a Distortion III. Cool.
You are absolutely right mate. Fantastic pedal. Goes well in front of my Marshall.
Great little pedal. And the 'get a haircut' comments are so rock n roll - sounds like we have a bunch of teachers from the 50s watching this
There are plenty of rock n' roll haircuts that don't look straight up dumb
Now this is a product he did justice to. Sounded fantastic.
Great playing, as always, Mr. Riario!
I've bought this pedal a few times. Buy it, play it awhile, sell it, buy it again... I think I secretly love it.
Absolutely Bro. I can't tell what any gain pedal sounds like when people noodle on them like Blues players.
I don't have any idea why people bash Paul! Great player and always good demos of the gear. Keep rocking!
+MrHottrodder67 becuz nice guys get picked on! Don't judge a book by it's cover! He is a killer player!
stratman 45 he can star in a remake of back to the future
I'm not a fan of his primary tone - WAY too bright for me - BUT he is an awesome guitarist and does GREAT demos
He’s a great player. But all his demos no matter what sound the same. A bit piercing.
I think a lot of people are just jealous he's got an awesome job, and totally shreds. Paul rocks.
I have this pedal and with my les paul is the best distortion pedal ever made
These videos have got much much better. I can tell you have practised the instrument a lot and really upped your game
I love that hissy, fuzzy, staticky distortion. Great for rhythms on the bridge pickup. I dig the hair and soul patch too. Rock on brother!
That thing does sound pretty badass.
i don't know but to my ears, that pedal has awesome tone range. sound great!
Great pedal! I tried one at a friend's place. I'm getting one soon. Got one of these on the way. Can't wait. I decided to retire my old Metal Zone.
I just ordered 1. How was it?
Oh my god! I love it! Damn thing is hell on earth distortion. Kinda like Dimebags sound in a small pedal.
@@roosterj2599 Nice! My wait begins..
Jesus that is one versatile pedal
I like your style of playing and the pedal sounds great to so I bought it.
I tried this one is person at a story and I can promise you guys it sounds amazing! I played it through a Fender deluxe and a les paul standard. And for those of you who criticize the tone in this video, the pedal can actually sound good. Never mind the treble issues here. :-)
Hi, deluxe reverb or blues deluxe? thanks
I've always been just get a "good amp" kinda guy, but I really like this a lot. This in front of anything will give you killer tone
The Best Dist for Gibsons
Oh wow man this sounds incredible I love it.😃👍
This is based on the marshall silver jubilee like some people say?
Is this a pedal or foot switch? Ultimate badass distortion.. put preamp volume to 10, put master volume to 10. Valve amp. Put the gain knob about 11 o'clock.
"Most ultimate"
He seems like he's aching to play "Just got paid"
holy shit! that pedal gives some amazing crunch!
I wanna hear power chords in B Standard, with that thing.
it does it all, every type of pup. love it!
what are the amp EQ settings?
btw superb playing on this one paul
pretty good pedal. i think i can be use for every genre
80's sound!!
How does this compare to the mxr +?
It bothers me that there is no mention of what rig this is playing through
Sounds amazing and great playing !
Please...What is your bridge pickup ?? Thanks ! 👍
that guitar top looks do good. good sounding to. marshall in a box
i know this was a long time ago but what clean settings were you using and on what amp please? if you can remember, im running clean channel on my hughes and kettner tubemiester1mid at 9 oclock treble and bass 12 oclock and gain at 10am and it sounds great with the settings that you used in the very beginning, awesome pedal.... this video made me take it out and use it and i havent touched it in over a year, thanx bud
MXR has covered the Bad Ass and now the Super BadAss. The only thing left is the "Chuck Norris"
sounds awesome!
Great playing but the pedal...?... why do I keep finding pedals demos that show off the "player" and not the pedal??? Maybe I'll start doing my own demos haha
does expensive distortion pedal doesnt create hiss..?
Who decides that EVERY guitar world demo has to have the treble cranked. Makes everything sound like garbage.
Does anybody know what he's got for a bridge pickup?
Aj Godbey The 1987 Aquanet Spandex it sounds like. Treble for days.
Silas Cousteau sorry but do you know all model of guitar? I have to learn it.
Does it sound a bit milder Fullbore Metal or quite the similar?
Sold
I wonder how long it takes to do his hair in the morning.
can anybody answer me, this mxr and boss ds-1X, who's better???????????????????? i'm dilemma , or any ideas???
Guitar's model?
Actual 59 les Paul?
What amp do you have? I have buyed this pedal, but is only a hard rock pedal, not for metal.. What eq do you have?
Rising Sun you can most definitely get a metal tone from this pedal :)
Darn wish I saw this video before I got my mxr Classic distortion ;( this one sounds a bit better
Is that your own Les Paul? What pickup is in the bridge position?
badass indeed...
I wonder if people are this mean to him in person ... I doubt it. Anyway Good quick Demo I like the pedal Just might have to demo it myself and see.
Good ass pedal
That is purity badass...
How much is this going for? I just bought the blue Bogner...playing it through a 1977 fender super reverb tube amp with original speakers 180 watt , the mutha sounds bad to the Boner...
Jesse A Olivares Retails for $99.99
Mine cost about $80 at guitar center
This man's haircut is highly improbable.
Right about that, mate - but fuck a duck! Can the man play!
+Guillaume Fimbry me thinks he is ashamed of his forehead...but he is one hell of a player!
Yes, but is it infinitely improbable? th-cam.com/video/nCf53ses22w/w-d-xo.html
Does anyone know how much this is in British Sterling
I can pick it up for £99 my friend :)
Badger?
too many people have done it, its mainstream now.
how much can this cost?
Odyssey Underground no more than $100 :)
Is hating on this guy still hip ?
yeah, paul reviews this kind of stuff really well! agreed! But please don't give him any metal stuff to review! :P
"Most ultimate distortion pedal ever made" huh? What about the Effectrode Blackbird? Pretty sure that (and many other pedals) can run circles around this thing.
Is this Andy from PGS (Pro Guitar Shop)? Sounds and looks like him. If there was a death match between the 2, who would win?
k ma Andy would win, Paul seems like a metrosexual. He wears scarves.
Why sound better ?
I'm starting to get into heavier metal and I want a cheap pedal (under $50 or $100) metal distortion/gain pedal that isn't ds-1 distortion (already have it). Please! Anyone! Help!
Jonathan Gillis For a really cheap pedal check out the Rowin Holy War distortion. its a mini pedal so fits on any board and it sounds great.
will it work plugged into say a line 6 spider 4?
that's your opinion man so u cant really be wrong
Hating on his barber is the new thing..
damn. I was in the market for a mediocrely-ultimate distortion pedal.
This pedal might sound good in your bedroom on a practice amp but how does it react in a band situation? Does it get lost in the mix or does it cut through with power and clarity like I'm hoping it does? This could possibly be my next purchase.

It's better with a band.
Well, not so awesome i think... let's check it out the Megalith Delta by MI audio, that is awesome.
With this pedal you might obtain the AFD tone, even better, for very much less money
Hello Daniel, what configuration did you use for the tone?
Gotta love that Hair!!
Whats this for a guitar burst? honeyburst ? And whats this for a model? 58 ?
I still like the 78 Distortion better.
Awesome
Damn.
Is his hair hip yet?
MXR rules! )))
Uhh Paul.So industrious fingers.lol!
most ultimate? great grammar
Says the guy who posted 2 sentence fragments. (No capital letters, either)
It's a stompbox.
would be nice to see it with good pickups and not passive stock gibson ones. They are good just not for demoing a distortion pedal. Please use correct guitars for the correct type of sounds. I have this pedal and I would never use active pickups.
paul, i can remember when you demoed the esp eclipse and had that haircut lolz
i see the distortion control is stuck in this demo ....wtf give the drive a wiggle so we got a low to high gain instead of wanking around randomly twiddleing the eq
This dude's hair is starting to have issues.
Jimmy Page just gave himself a *facepalm*!
sounds very Fizzy
Steve Henderson it sounds NOTHING like this in person. It's actually a VERY warm sounding distortion.
Steve Henderson This pedal sounds fucking amazing. It's very amp like and responsive. Try it in person.
Nope, now it's hating on the people that hate on paul that's become the new fad.
Paul's horrible hair steals the show.
Fuck you
dont have to play so damn fast. I cant hear the peddals full potential with this dude.
Huh. im not sure about that pedal... so i'll go for the Boss-DS2 turbo distortion... economic and renombrated around the world
