If you have an intermittent starting problem... my suggestion is try this first. Diagnosing and replacing everything else it could be. is a waste of time amnd huge frutration when this could easiliy be the source. I found that out from experience. Simple test. Take the old Ignition Switch out (that's the round piece he is holding. And BMW calls that the ignition switch in most places). Turn and see if it works. In my case it was easy. The plastic the switch is made of was crumbling (like so many of these old BMW pieces) and fell apart in my hands. It had been falling apart for probably 5 years. PS I never saw this addressed on any BMW forum. I stumbled acros the idea when working on a 1978 Toyota pickup I have and switch was an obvious problem. Good work. Mention later models like 91 have airbags. Some small adjustments needed. Switch Harness is a differerent part lnumber
why not just take a flat head and test the new ignition without putting it all back together first by turning the brown ignition all the way to the 3rd setting which is "Start"...1st Accessory, 2nd On, 3rd Start

Yes because it's not part of the key tumbler. Good luck! Thanks for commenting
