    I grew up with abusive parents. My siblings and I, decided that we would be better parents.
    Thank goodness, we all did.

      @Louisa,
      Good for you. While it's true your kiddos had to deal with situations NO ONE should should be forced to experience, ever. On a brighter note, always r remember that the resilience of children is AMAZING. What's more is, not only did you set a great example by showing them that NO ONE sbould deal with abuse. When they grow up, they're going to remember that you loved them protected them. They'll love you even more for that

    I think this is very realistic. His sister whom he suffered with and loves very much seen him in a different light on this day. She reminded him of what he swore he would never become and she let him know that he did exactly what he said he wouldn't. That hurt him to be the vilian in his lil sis's eyes. To be his father. Hurt him enough to want to seek help.

HOWEVER IT WAS TRULY ENDEARING TO SEE THE FAMILY MEMBER OF THE ABUSER NOT ENABLE THEM. I APPLAUD THIS PIECE BECAUSE NOT ONCE IN MY SITUATIONS DID ANYONE STAND UP FOR ME BUT TOLD ME I SHOULDN'T DO THINGS THAT I KNOW WILL UPSET HIM BUT I WISH THEY ONLY KNEW THAT I DIDN'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO GET MY ASS BEAT.. It’s good. No one should have to tolerate domestic violence and the first priority must always be the welfare of the victim. But abusers become that way for a reason, and I like to see a film like this, which explores ways to break the cycle of abuse.

    My father was abusive. He would smack me around, slam doors on me and stomp on my feet. He would hit my brother with hard leather soled shoes, and a belt(with the buckle side) if it wasn't for my sister inlaw, he would have abused my nephew. Domestic violence is a disease, an insidious rampant disease.

      I also want to clarify something else. I have No kids, No husband. It is other people in my life who " abuse " me. I don't even like to use the word " abuse ". It sounds so self-pitying, and it is also an Over-reaction to arguments. Fights are normal, even if they are sometimes Unjustly directed at a person. This is true for all kinds of relationships.

    Six Facts About Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) You Probably Didn’t Know

    1. Intimate partner violence, also known as domestic violence, consists of physical, sexual, and psychological aggression, including what have been called “power and control” behaviors. Except for sexual abuse, rates in the general population are comparable across the sexes, as well as across sexual orientation. In the United States, over 26 million men and 23 million women are abused in some manner by an intimate partner each year, with rates of physical abuse victimization around 5.3 million for male victims and 4.7 million for female victims.
    2. Women are motivated to perpetrate IPV for the same reasons as men, and motives are similar across sexual orientation. Aside from self-defense, the motives include a desire to punish, out of jealousy, in retaliation, when they are under the influence of substances, to express anger or other emotions, or as a way of getting what they want and dominating the other person.
    3. Both partners are physically violent in a majority (about 60%) of abusive relationships, and women strike the first blow as often as do men. The percentage of bi-directional aggression is greater when all forms of abuse, including psychological abuse, are considered.
    4. Nonetheless, it would be incorrect to suggest that IPV is the same across the sexes. Women account for more than three-fourths of intimate partner homicide victims, and women who kill their partners are more likely to do so in self-defense than men who kill their partners. Women also incur the much larger share of serious physical injuries requiring medical attention. Compared to male victims, female victims also exhibit more severe psychological symptoms, including depression and PTSD. Minor physical injuries, however, are incurred by men and women at more comparable rates, and the impact of psychological abuse is the same regardless of sex or sexual orientation.
    5. Most IPV is of the type known as situational violence, consisting of infrequent physical assaults, such as grabbing or pushing, resulting in minor injuries, or no injuries at all. This type of abuse arises from escalated conflicts and poor impulse control and does not always worsen over time. The type of IPV known as battering features more severe physical assaults and an overall pattern of dominance and control. While women are equally likely as men to engage in most battering behavior, it is usually men who perpetrate extreme battering behavior, sometimes called intimate terrorism.
    6. Children are more adversely affected in the short run by observing violence by the father, in terms of psychological distress, but observing assaults by the mother puts them equally at risk for having conduct and academic problems. In the long run, children who observe IPV by either parent are significantly more likely than other children to assault dating partners in adolescence, to abuse their spouses or co-habitants in adulthood, and develop substance abuse and other mental health disorders.
