      I was following Dr Stanton's salt & water protocol this summer. My scalp wasn't itchy anymore. I got out of the habit in the Fall and my scalp has been itchy. It is not simply genetic! Almost nothing is. Mine started at age 35 when my (gut) health was breaking down.

    • @AngelaAStantonPhD
      @AngelaAStantonPhD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johanna it is genetic. It can start at any age. Genetic differences "switch on" at whatever age they wish. The time the switch happens is controlled by epigenetics. No one is born with migraines, but those who are born with a migraine brain will, in time, end up with migraines, provided the genes are switched on. In some this is at age 1 or 2, in others it is at age 50. It can be at any age.

    • @johannakunze3300
      @johannakunze3300 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AngelaAStantonPhD ok thank you. That was actually what I was trying to say, but not precisely enough; it is some form of interaction. Do we have any idea what "switches the genes on"?

    • @AngelaAStantonPhD
      @AngelaAStantonPhD 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@johannakunze3300 the turning of the migraine genes in your 30s has something to do with how the brain develops. It develops in stages and not at once. The speed of the stages is individual. Our brain never stops developing (well… it does in dementia) as new connections are always formed. Every new memory you form is a new connection. So we add a lot of new connections each day and we also trim away (called synaptic pruning) old ones. New connections may activate a predisposition-as in migraine brain.
      I had my migraine genes turn on in my late 20s--after the birth of my two sons. Before that I had some cyclical vomiting syndrome, anxiety, and a host of other issues that I didn't associate with migraine at that time--heck I didn't even know what a migraine was at that time. It seems that the hypersensory neuron connections got enhanced with the completion of my two pregnancies. That was the stage of my brain development is creating more connections
      Generally speaking, we have lots of epigenetic factors in our lives and nutrients and culture are two important ones. To give you an example of migraine-brain that hasn't switched on: think of living in a tribe. There are still tribes living today that eat only meat, milk, and blood (blood has lots of salt). Look for the films I referred to in the video, which is on Amazon Prime and the series is called Tribes. It is about 4 tribes. You will see how they live.
      So if we have a migraine brain but we never ever eat/drink such that its difference causes a problem, we won’t know we are migraineurs. For example, the people who have mastered the protocol, they are now migraine free. As long as they don't eat offending carbs (or some who don't eat carbs at all) and take in plenty of salt and water, they never ever have a migraine so they will not know they have a migraine brain. So the "new" epigenetic factor these migraineurs placed on their nutrition turned the switch off and made the migraine-brain irrelevant. Many, for example, tell me that they ended up with a migraine because they forgot that they are migraineurs after years of no migraine by following the protocol. And then they trailed off the protocol and bang… migraine.
      So we can turn on or off our own "switch" depending on what we eat.

    It sounds like most of Angela's hypotheses are predicated on the idea that migraneurs and people with more brain activity use more sodium than other people, and that use leads to elimination from the body, but is there actually good evidence for that? If that conclusion is primarily based on the amount of sodium in the urine of migraneurs, it could be that these individuals either use sodium inefficiently for some reason, and therefore waste some of it, or their ability to recover sodium before it is eliminated is somehow hindered.
    Given how precious sodium is to the body and its relative scarcity in the ancestral landscape, we should (and do) have ways of recovering it without it being eliminated all the time. This is another case where the few people successfully eating salt-free carnivore diets offer sufficient proof that you don't need additional salt when your body is balanced properly. The carnivores that bloat up when adding salt have probably improved the efficiency of sodium management to the point where additional salt is a drag on the system...taste should serve as a good guide for these people, and it sounds like a lot of them object to the taste of added salt.

    • @AngelaAStantonPhD
      @AngelaAStantonPhD ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are several studies examining the frequency and size of the voltage generate by the brain comparing migraineurs and others and migraineurs have more electrical activity and also different magnitude. In addition, there are studies showing anatomical differences; migraineurs have more neuronal connections among sensory neurons, so there is more "chatter" between these neurons, using more sodium. Also, the study that refers to migraineurs excreting more sodium: everyone ate the same food. The carnivores that bloat up when they add salt do so because they are restricting how much water they drink.
      For migraineurs taste is not a good measure. I hate the taste of salt so I prefer to not salt my food or water. I take salt in capsules so I need not taste the salt. It works perfectly. And there are studies showing that migraineurs are salt-wasters. In sum, I hope I answered all your questions.

    The problem with this doctor is that she does not get to the point ! Twenty minutes in I get the background . Please get to the working hypothesis.
    1. What is your actionable hypothesis?
    2.How can I test whether your hypothesis works for me?
    3. What are the specifics to carry it out?

    Dr. Cho. If its not too much trouble, could you run your guests vocal through a volume leveler. Shes very informative. She disappears in hwr more intricate phrases and then pegs the simple words. Hard to hear but I listen to the pow and she pierces my brain with a simple word. Kind of painful to listen to.
