1:56 The BEST side to plant on your trellis depends on what direction your trellis faces in relation to the path of the sun where you are. Remember that your plants will reach towards the sun! For those in the northern hemisphere you will want to plant on the north side of the trellis so that the plants grow TOWARDS the sun and INTO the trellis instead of initially growing away from the trellis. The opposite goes for those in the southern hemisphere,, you will want to plant on the southern side of the trellis.
** If you are trying to grow plants on a slanted trellis, and this might seem counterintuitive, but you will want your trellis slanted TOWARDS the sun so that your plants can "climb" the trellis while reaching towards the sun instead of you having to spend time to "train" them against they way they want to naturally grow. It really really really helps to support the stalks!!

Tractor Supply has these panels out on the sides of their building in the fencing area, all laid out for you to pick whatever sizes you want. As posted before, there are shorter ones, which I plan on using with my 4 X 8 ft beds and the long ones for arch trellis. Lowes has these out in the fencing... and you know what.. Walmart in some areas have them.

Here in Australia if you want to replicate this trellis you need to get Rio Grid or Mesh. Here in Oz a cattle panel is something completely different and you would never bend it in a million years. … also the T bars I think you called them are called “star pickets” here (Awesome information - thank you!)

If you have something hanging out the back of your truck bed just tie a red rag on the part hanging out and you are legal to haul it home that way. I found two panels on the bad fencing of our big animal pen I didn’t measure them but I think the smaller one is 8ft. We drug them over to the garden and I have cucumbers planted for the shortest one and gourds for the bigger one. I also arched the bigger one over my asparagus bed to provide more shade on that bed and I have my lettuce growing in that bed also, so hopefully my lettuce won’t bolt as quickly when it really starts to get hot here.

In Canada, our "cattle pannels" are called 9 gauge wire mesh. They are 7 ft long and 3.5 ft wide. Zip tie 2 end to end (over lap a little) to get the long version. They are $16.84 at Home Depot. Model number 438743.

My kid took a handful of my mixed dried beans last year. She got nervous with the reports of shortages in the store.. Maybe 1/8 of a cup. She worked her ass off. Sprouted them, weeded it watered it. Her yield was 2 cups of mostly red and black beans. Fortunately she thought that was tons. This year we helped her pick out good seeds she can have fun with like a popcorn variety, 3 color mixed green beans and colorful bell peppers. Im so excited for her, its going to work out so much better

I didn't have access to a 16' trailer and thought we would have to cut them in half.. but talking to Tractor Supply in Nixa Mo. they told me we just needed a pickup truck, they would get them in. They loaded them in to the back of the bed and picked up the back (with a fork lift) and stood them up just like they would be in the garden.. and closed the tail-gait... Was a little work as we bought 10 and the normal load is 5. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2790423931025782&set=pcb.2790424291025746&type=1&theater very happy now! thank you for the ideas.. keep them coming :)

Thanks for that Jess. Everyone give a thumbs-up!. I just use the cattle panels place on their edge and staked. I don't think my wife would think the Arches are aesthetically pleasing! I also have one panel of a dog kennel that I grow Vining things up. I am in an HOA restricted urban community so I try to keep things from showing Too Much from the street. LOL

    • @JWHealing
      @JWHealing ปีที่แล้ว

I have an HOA too though it is a weaker one than most. My whole garden is in front since that's where we have sun. The whole front yard is woodchipped, so I need to be more aware of aesthetics since we are already standing out. I'd suggest a big long row of show stopper flowers & shrubs along the front edge. Showy flowers tend to win people over. In addition we go heavy on the flowers throughout. For example nasturtiums have great flowers but we eat the greens so it's a pleaser for passers by but also useful as food and also companion planting.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm adding cattle panels to my garden this year inspired by you and you answered a bunch of questions I didn't know I had, even after watching your earlier video. We have a small Toyota Tacoma and were able to fold one panel at a time in the bed, so we had to make four trips for the four panels we need. That was the biggest issue for us and I'm relieved we solved it. The panels ended up staying bent when we got home, but it's ok since they are going to be arches anyway. I can't wait to install these and watch my garden grow over them. Really, thank you for all you offer. My garden learning grows exponentially faster and my inspiration soars from watching you in your garden.

You're totally right about the terminalogy issue. Here in S.E. Texas the guy on the other side of the phone didn't know "cattle panel" his catalogue had something like "galvanized heavy gauge trellis / panel 4' X 16" 6 Gauge wire mesh" either way, it's the same thing.

You can save money when your boxes are wood by replacing the T- posts with screws. I’ve put my 4x4 boxes (2) with a 2 foot walkway through the middle . Then I took long wood screws (3) on each board, spaced. Then anchored the cattle panels with the screws. I have no issues. It could work according to your setup. Those t posts are expensive! ❤ from Walterboro SC

I am very excited to try using arched trellises this year. Can anyone tell me approximately how many squash plants I could put on a 50" x 16' arched trellis? I was hoping to do 1 each butternut, acorn, spaghetti and zucchini. I know that the zuke will need tied and that I may need to support the larger fruits. Thanks and love the videos!

Our town is set up so wonky. I live 2 blocks from the major city park. I also love like 6 blocks from our commercial farm feed and supply store. We don't have a truck. My husband and brother in law walked our panels home. Hahahahaha. My son is so excited for watermelons. I have basically planted snacks all over my yard. I dont plan on feeding my kids this summer. Hahaha

Hello! Does anyone here know where we can get cattle panels in New Zealand? Cattle panels in NZ are very different to those listed here. They are more like gate/fences and are super thick and cannot be bent. Perhaps it's called something else in NZ/Aussie? I hear Australia has a similar thing going on. I would love to make these for my new garden that I am digging up. I have been searching for these for months without any luck! I can only find the wire mesh products in stores which will not be strong enough to be arched trellises. :( 🥲 losing hope over here...

If creating an arch with only 1 t-post per side, how tall are the t-posts, and do you place the cattle panel at ground level or do you raise that from the ground 16-18"? LOVING your videos!

I currently have 4 x 8 raised gardens beds. Do I need that much ground space to grown things like different squash, melons, zucs and cucs? If the plants are basically growing vertically, can I grow things like bush beans in the 4 x 8 area underneath the trellis or would the area be too shaded? Other than lettuces do you have any thoughts on what I could use the vacant area underneath the trellis for? Thanks Kathy

I'm going to use some old porch railing to grow pumpkins, loofa, Watermelon. I have a couple questions , should I string twine or metal through it to create a "net"? I wondered about fairytale pumpkins if it was worthwhile to grow them vertically. Maybe something off the ground but low to the ground where they rest on top? I could use some sort of pallet wood structure the height of a dog house and let it Vine out. What are your thoughts? Thanks for your channel.

    "Cattle Panel Math"
Most of us know about "chicken math" :-) , so let's take a more in depth look at cattle panel math:
Cost per 4 linear feet per raised bed = $10 (if 8 foot panels cost $20 each)
If we have 2 raised beds that are each 8 feet long and we are arching a trellis along the entire length of the beds it will cost $40 for the cattle panels plus the cost of T bars or other support poles and strapping. Let's call it $50.
If you plant 2 plants per 4 feet on each side of the trellis you will need to grow $50 of food from 8 plants in order to "break even" from your yield the first year if you are only to get one crop from each panel. And this does not include any costs for dirt or nutrients, or the beds themselves!
Growing on arched cattle panels is an INVESTMENT. PLEASE do not think that going out and spending $200 on cattle panels so that you can grow 32 vegetable plants is going to help you while getting started!! Even if you are a seasoned gardener, spending $10 every 2 plants on "supports" isn't the most efficient way to garden UNLESS you have very limited space and are in it for the long run and KNOW that you are going to use the panels over and over and over and over again. There are better ways.
    Happy Gardening!

I use cattle panel trellis for blackberry and tomatoes and also have hoop trellis, I built the hoop trellis with two panels making it 108" (9ft) long. the front and back bottom opening of the trellis is 8' wide and the height is 76". I built raised beds inside the trellis. This allows the trellis to be covered with plastic in the colder months and serve as a greenhouse or large cold frame to grow greens, veggies in pots, or store other potted plants.

Is there a best direction to put your arches to get proper sun light? How far apart should the arches be in order to not over shade? I live in the 110°+ dry desert and don’t know how to balance plants getting enough but not too much Sun ☀️

Concrete rebar should work. The only thing is, those panels rust the moment you buy them if not before, so you'd have to paint them with something appropriate.

I'd really like to try out the cattle panel method of verticle gardening. Do you recommend a specific thickness to the wire? Here in the UK the thickest I've been able to find is 2.5mm, and that's only one end of the wire (it gets thinner towards to bottom of the fence). I presume anything too thin won't provide much support for when the plants get weighty? Thanks

I just got my cattle panels home. Minivan on the roof with ratchet straps and flag ties. You are rubbing off on Iowa people we were not the only ones buying them. So you would plant say a small melon on the inside and a tomato on the outside? We bought enough to have two trellis between each of the three beds but now I'm wondering if I should scratch one of those and just run it along the outside of the outermost bed and grow the tomatoes up that

Sometimes when I hear that people ask if you can plant different things on each side of the trellis, I wonder if they actually mean one thing on the top (outside) of the trellis and another on the underside (inside) of the trellis, not realizing that the plants will cross through and go wherever they want (and that one might shade the other too much if they plant on both the inside and outside).
