Ahhh I've been waiting for this
I know the actual critical role show is way too much to watch for the average person, but I really recommend watching a video that compares this episode to the original moment on stream, because the players (including the player who plays Vex) were just as shocked as you were!
3:50 this based on a real D&d tabletop game... and in the games you don't know when sh** is going to go horribly wrong. The most recent campaign goes from doing donuts in the parking lot to literally everyone almost getting melted by 1... enemy...
y'all need to react to Eminence in Shadow, the protagonist is like a better Anos Voldigoad, with some hints of Rimuru and lots of unique flair in the isekai genre. Plus it is well animated and hilarious too

In Vax’s defense, he’s the trap finder. so when he’s like “let me go first” it’s not being over protective, just him doing his job
When the rogue says "let me check it out first", there's a 50% chance someone is about to get bodied so the DM can say, "should've listened to the guy with the highest dex 🤷♂️"
And as evidenced in this episode...ignoring him is the height of recklessness.

Grog is a Goliath (or half-Giant, like in the show), and they have almost no hair growing, so our big boy's delight about the beard is absolutely fair
as someone who can't grow a beard either, i can imagine 🙂

They've changed it in the show. The half-giants can grow hair in this version. I imagine it would be easier for the animators to create a better variety of distinguishable characters. And it would make them less similar to DnD goliaths for copywrite avoidance.

As soon as that happened in the campaign (it wasn't something planned, just a series of very unfortunate events) Matt immediately went in damage mitigation mode without being too coddling about it too. Especially since it resulted in the events of the next episode, so i'll say he handled pretty well.

Just because Kratos is more well known most people think Grog is ripping off Kratos. But we know the OG is Grog x3.
Actually the episode in which Grog gets a proper beard was aired in September 2015 while development for God of War 2018 began in 2014, with concept art featuring a bearded Kratos was leaked in April 2016, with a 2016 e3 demo showcasing gameplay of a bearded Kratos. Taking into account how notoriously time consuming it is for hair to be animated, as well as the near year and a half of development God of War had prior to Grog’s beard, it’s more than likely that bearded Kratos was actually created before bearded Grog was. However, neither Critical Role nor Santa Monica Studios were aware of each other’s production, so really it’s a coincidence that these two characters looked so much more similar (since Grog was based on Kratos). Sorta how like we got two movies of the white house being attacked in the same year. So technically bearded Kratos predates bearded Grog, but bearded Grog was introduced to audiences before bearded Kratos.

For the question about how it missed Percy he just rolled really high on dodging it, and the player for Vex's character rolled the lowest you possibly could.

Notice that there is almost no music in the episode apart from the end, to make the viewers feel uneasy without really noticing why, and made the ending music seem more emotional and ponient (according to the cast).

mechanically within the game, it was an area of effect, where everybody within 20 feet of the tomb had to make a dexterity saving throw to avoid the trap. Percy, Vex, and Trinket were in the area, and Percy made his dex save so he avoided the attack, but Laura (Vex) rolled a critical failure on her dodge, so took the full brunt of the attack. This took her below 0 hit points, and while that in a normal situation that would knock the player unconscious and they'd have a chance to be healed or cling on to life, in this case because it was a necromantic spell effect if you dropped below 0 hp you were dead. Period. No healing, no clinging to life, just dead. That's what made the situation so shocking in the game and it became one of the pivotal points of the campaign with repercussions lasting until the very end.
Belt of Dwarven Kind. Magically gives you the abilities of a Dwarf, including a fine beard.
Dwarf craftsman: Probably one of the best pieces of work made by dwarf hands, in my opinion!
My favorite thing about the belt is, he could read dwarvish, if he knew how to read at all XD
In the critical role vex rolled a natural 1 and Percy rolled high enough to save himself trinket got clapped too but they changed it here

If he rolled higher than Vax's 11, I'm willing to think he would kill Vex. Everything worked out, but characters die in DND.

i know kratos is fresh in everyone's mind bc the new games are sick af, but our boy grog was rocking the full beard in 2015 and kratos didn't get his till 2018, so if anything kratos looks like grog :)
edit: 1. also the belt does alot more than just giving him a beard
2. "he's like a child" yes, yes he is, average intelligence in dnd is a 10, grog has an intelligence of 6 (by the rules he's not smart enough to even learn how to read)
3. Vax is the team's rogue, he specializes in being able to spot and disarm traps, he's not being overprotective he's just doing his job which IS keeping everyone safe from traps (if they'd listen to him and not touch anything)
4. Vex is def dead, happen just as abrubt in the stream, the armor is the armor of the goddess of death, of course it was trapped with death magic, in the stream just as here in the animation the player for percy got overzealous and grabbed the armor triggering the trap and an AOE burst of death magic hit percy, vex, and trinket. when it came time to roll the saves for said trap percy passed, and tricket and vex failed the save, trinket i believe still had some hp after the damage was dealt, but vex rolled a natural 1 (the worst failure u can roll) and the damage took her below zero hp, and as per the magic, if it took u passed zero u died on the spot.
In the campaign Percy made a reflex save while Vex failed her save. That is why Vex was the only one hit. They didn't really do anything at all here to explain this, hence a lot of people being confused and thinking it was contrived, but it really did come down to luck.
Amazon recently announced a spin-off series with completely different characters that is based on campaign 2 of Critical Role. Looks like the show's doing good 👍
I like that we're getting a few campaign 2 Easter eggs in this series.

It technically wouldn't make any sense for him to be "from there" [meaning from the second campaign], since the first campaign ended before the second one even started. Anything else may or may not contain spoilers.

Well yeah, it was green lit for season 3 before season 2 had even aired back in October. And then yeah last week they confirmed Campaign 2 would be animated too. They’ve even started working on other original content for Amazon so it’s fair to say they are doing well
Grog had the beard before Kratos, the belt of Dwarvenkind allows the wearer to see up to 60 of complete darkness, resistance to poisons, read/write Dwarvish, and count as a Dwarf for using specific magical items. It also cause the wearer to grow a beard. Of those bonuses the only one Grog doesn't benefit from is the ability to read Dwarvish as he can't read.
Wait how does that work? The magic basically forces knowledge into your head right so why shouldn't he be able to read Dwarvish just because he can't read normally? Is there magic specifically preventing him from reading things?
@@somedudewatchintv5297 More that his intelligence stat in the campaign is so low he cannot read (or count for that matter). So he can understand what dwarvish is, but can't read it. There was a bit where he has momentarily increased intelligence rolls because of a potion and learned to write his name from Pike, but then forgot it all when the potion wore off.

As a DnD player and one who has been in the same game for over a decade now I love this episode and the next as I am a champion for the raven queen myself.
Seeing their intrupitation of the armor and her has been such a fucking treat to me.

I just stated as someone who has served this Goddess for over a decade+ in my own games [ one that's been doing on since like highschool and is "generational" that its nice to see how they interpreted this armor and the Matron of raven aka the Raven Queen.

Some explanation, every part of the show is something they played through in their d&d campaign.
So when the trap went off, everyone in its area needed to roll a "saving throw". I forget what # die they used but the lower half you fail and the higher half you succeed and dodge the trap. Laura (Vex) failed her's, while Taliesin (Percy) succeeded which is why it didn't hit him.
Yeah if you succeed nothing happens you just dodge it which Percy did. Vex failed the dexterity save. She took like 56 points of damage. She goes well I'm unconscious. Matt goes wait you drop to zero? As you watch vex fall, you see the light leave her eyes not breathing. Everyone was stunned.
Taliesin got a 25, Laura rolled a nat 1.👀
In a DnD game, anyone can die. The party was fairly careful to make sure if anyone got hurt, they would get healed right away during their death saves.
But death magic instant kills if you lose enough hit points. There is even an instant kill spell in most systems

Vax wasn't being over protective. He was doing his job. He is literally the only member of the group that can find and disable traps. And there are clearly traps all over the place.

Not sure if you guys ever rewatch episodes, but one thing that you may not have noticed about this one is that there is very, very little music in it. even during the battles, it's there, but more subdued than normal. Then the music hits at the end. *chef's kiss*

Vex dies.
Prior to this season I had indirectly heard about Vex dying, but had forgotten about it until the end of this episode. However I didn't know the context behind it. I hadn't heard of Critical Roll until the second campaign when they got all new characters. After this episode I tracked down a clip of her dying in the campaign. Seems Vex had less HP than Matt realized and she died thanks to a bad roll. Something to keep in mind this was originally a table top game and the DM has limited control over what happens. Characters can die when their luck runs out.

To be fair to Grog, he's got an intelligence of 6 in-game. Most animals range from 3-5 and a regular person has 10. So the man is a bit dumb but we love him for it lmao.
In the critical roll campaign it was base off the player rolled a 2 which is why Vax was killed. Percey rolled a saving 12 so he took minor damage. But they animated this scene so well
Considering critical roll was originally a pathfinder system and by now y’all seen next episode will say this.
The goddess of death, matron of ravens based on pharasma in pathfinder lore. Same with not liking undead.
The god unleaded last season called whispered one most likely based on pathfinder Tar-Baphon, the whispered tyrant. Tyrants grasp is an adventure being the last one for first edition of pathfinder where heroes most stop tar-baphon from reaching the Starstone, an relic that gives trials to ppl to become gods if they succeed. In the end his plans failed and body breaking apart but before that he said a curse, grasped the ground and exploded. Now there is a crater with in the center all that’s left is his arm. The crater is called Tyrants grasp.

Remeber the sphinxs warning? That thered be a cost of reaching the level of taking on the dragons. And Pike said the group was willing to pay it. Now we find out if they actually can handle that.
Percy dove out of the way, which they didn't do a good job of showing here. Should have shown him throwing himself to the floor a second before Vex fell beside, then him looking over to ask if she's alright and being level with her dead eyes.
Let's not forget that this was a D&D campaign before a tv show. So player death is more likely to happen than some mainstream typical story

Funny part about Grog's new dwarven belt, aside from a beard it also gives one the ability to read and write the dwarven language. Unfortunately Grog's so stupid he cannonically cannot read or write so when they found dwarvish writing Travis asked what they said and Matt would have to remind him that even though he recognizes what language they are he's still illiterate.
i'm someone who likes the original DND campaign more than the show (the show's still really good, but idk i just like the campaign more), but they did such a good job adapting Vex's death in this one, it had me in just as many feels as the campaign
When characters are from a dnd campaign, just remember they can roll a 1 at any time. No plot armor

"I did not think they would kill a main member of the group!" Dude this is based on a D&D game. Any character can be killed at any time for any reason. Even the players/DM don't know what will happen next. That's what makes it so suspenseful, emotional, and entertaining.
In the campaign the trap made more sense, rather than home in on Vex it was a 10ft blast with a saving roll to avoid it, Percy passed and Vex rolls a 1 so fails.
No plot armor in D&D. When Percy touched the armor in the campaign he unleashed a necrotic blast, Percy rolled well... Vex did not...

So the reason why Percy didn't get hit and Vex did is because when the campaigne was happening- they both had to roll a dexterity saving throw and if you succeeded you didn't get hit by the trap. Percy succeded.. Vex did not :C

yea percy hella wanted the armor from the start and forgot to have Vax check for traps (Vax is overprotective, but being a rogue one of his main functions is to literally check for traps). it was an aoe trap and Percy saved on his roll so it didn't hit him. Vex and trinket both failed their rolls in the game. If it brings your health to 0 there are no rolls, you just die. How they showed it is basically exactly how it happened in the game
To quote Brian Murphy: "I wanna play a video game, where i can die forever. That's why I play D&D"

So what Grog got was a "belt of dwarvenkind" which has a ton of fun benefits, but the big one is the chance to grow a beard. Grog being a goliath, it isn't common for his race to have facial hair so it's kind of a big deal to him. Fun side fact, the belt also gives the wearer the ability to speak, read, and write dwarvish, however Grogs intelligence is so low that he can't read or write in game.
Well the twins are half elves while their father is a full elf. The mention of diluted blood likely comes from that. However that means he got it on with a human, so it's his own fault that happened.

The reason grog is so happy is cause his race doesn't normally grow facial hair so one of his kind having a beard is very special to him.
They went to break into the goddess of Death's Champion's tomb and steal his armor. I would say those traps are on another lvl.
Imagine if there are other items that grow hair on your head; like an afro, mohawk, or mustache.

In the live game, Percy went for the armor knowing he could reroll if he had a bad roll. So the DM made the spell go for the 3 closest people and lowest person got hit.
Laura, the person who created vex, rolled a natural 1 on the dice. Meaning the DM ultimately should do the worst of the possible outcomes. Which made the spell hit hard and blew through her death saving rolls.
They did it rather well in the show. Cant wait for yall to see how Vax responds.

The Belt of Dwarvenkind is great for warrior types, gives the wearer a beard (regardless of gender), and allows you to read dwarven; but Grog can't read, so. One night, Vax got Grog really drunk, then shave off *half* the beard as he slept. He tried to fill it in by smearing charcoal across the clean side of his face.
