Fun fact: they deliberately left most of the episode without music (aside from flashbacks and combat) so it contributes to the uneasy feeling throughout, and when that music comes in at the end, it hits super hard because of that.

@@cheezbiscuit4140 I have to assume that one was intentional, a freebie for them to play with, and he just acted like it was an oversight to entertain them more. There's no way he came up with the name "Mike Hunt", a classic joke name, and didn't realize.
I kinda figured it would be, since unless they have 4Chan on Taldorei "Pedobear" would be a pretty immersion-breaking bit to write in.
Watching this moment in the campaign was so nuts, Laura rolled a NATURAL 1 for the dex save, 56 frigging points of necrotic damage. Matt just looked up seriously and asked "does that bring you below zero?" And you see Laura's mouth fall open in shock as the realization hits her and the rest of the table all at once...they were literally making jokes about Vex dying seconds before they realized how serious it actually was 😭
Necrotic damage is scary for exactly that reason. So often it kills you outright, or if not leaves you seriously weakened.

They're Half-Elves, this is a pretty common occurrence for half-elves since they fit neither with their human family (it's always a mixture of human and elf) or their elf family as their personalities often reflect both but they also live longer than humans and shorter than elves so they of fit in nowhere
Don't worry. Vex might be dead, but it's about to be revealed that Vex and Vax were actually triplets, with Laura turning up to the next session with her new character, Vux.
And they bring a lifetime supply of Vix

Yes, the twins are (or in Vex's case were) half-elves.
Also yes, she did roll badly on a d20, a nat 1 to be specific.
Vax: "You don't need me. I... need... Do not go far from me."
Vex: "I won't. I swear it."
That entire ending was so freaking sad, both the final flashback and Vax's breakdown absolutely broke me. And it was a completely preventable accident, too. Also, something is not right with that sword. It's messing with Grog's head, and I don't like it.
Liam as Vax killed it, felt all too real.
What? It's a perfectly ordinary sword. Just like that dagger Mat picked up in Shadar Logath in Wheel of Time, or Percy's Gun in Season 1.
Ashley Johnson swears better than just about anyone in the cast. Vax gave Pike the "Pickle" nickname way back in S1E3 and it's my favorite. In the campaign, during the Briarwood arc, Vax was toying with becoming a follower of the Everlight, even sewing her symbol into his glove to see if it affected vampires.
Yeah, vacs has nicknames for every single person of Vox machina...they are great.
Man, she picks up on the most subtle clues the animators put in that I didnt even notice in multiple viewings.
She ought to be an art director.
Loving these reactions - especially the pauses to allow for full thoughts/comedy without missing anything.

This was exactly as heartbreaking as I expected it to be. No, actually more so. I saw the title of the episode, I was bracing for it the entire time, clocked every piece of foreshadowing and it still hit me like a freight train. Liam fucking O'Brien. He has spent (at least) 8 years perfecting the art of making Critters cry. Hearing him _SOBBING_ his fucking heart out with a teeny tiny baby Vax _crying_ on screen and that *music* and the fact that he and Laura are as good as siblings in real life and... I've seen this scene two dozen times at this point. I still tear up. Every. God. Damned. Time.
Its a tomb of a warrior serving a God governing Domain: Death. Instant death trap curse is a must in those dungeons.
I love the scene when Grog eats the sword and becomes a vampire. So dramatic, can’t wait for you to react to it!
Especially when he exclaimed “It’s Grogin’ time” right after!
"Who gave you the right to end it there, you pile of fucking shite!" The cry of every cliffhanger.
That ending is heartbreaking, every time. Vax running for his sister in terror, cutting to the flashback of tiny Vax, scared and alone in the woods, running to hug her as close as he can, terrified of losing the one person he has in his life. She doesn’t need him, but he needs her. The cuts to Vax crying and pleading for her to not leave, to still be alive, with the flashbacks of tiny Vax holding on to her for dear life, and her hugging back, promising not to leave him again. And then finally, just silence, cut only by his sobbing. A lot of the time I find tv crying unrealistic, but I can genuinely feel these sobs in my chest. Just… ugly, broken sobs. Props to Liam O’Brien for wonderful voice work. He always manages to break my heart, and this time is no different.
(Also props to Laura Bailey for Vex’s death rattle there in the end, that last gasp of air leaving her as she died. That was good and heartbreaking.)
Something that might help with Scanlan is to look when he sees children.

I love how even though Kashaw and Zahra are more antagonistic than they were at this point in the campaign, I feel like they ramped up the sexual tension between Zahra and Vex in the way they're constantly trying to out-meangirl each other.
And before anyone goes "Youre making it up, why does it always need to be sexual?" and whatnot, Laura's said that Vex had a crush on Zahra.

I love how much you pay attention to details and foreshadowing. You're right, everything in animation is deliberate, and it's one of the things I love so much about animation, and why I think it's the BEST medium for a fantasy show like this, directed at grownups, which has layers of worldbuilding and history and magic, with complex character dynamics. You can pack so much into a few frames that you just can't convey with the same precision in live action. In this essay I will... *ahem * sorry, my animation nerd is showing. Lemme just... *shoves it back in its cage *
The physical reaction to the cliffhanger is the best. This is based on an actual D&D campaign so none of the characters ever really have plot armor which is part of what makes it so great.
It's a weird shipping moment but after a while Vex finds out that the broom can also talk and Craven's Edge falls in love with it and their love gives them crucial buffs in defeating Thordak it's more emotionally moving than it sounds.
Luckily, Craven Edge has a female setting.

Love your reactions thus far, As far as Scanlan goes though. I feel its an honest reaction but Sam Riegal(the voice actor that created him) Is fond of creating LONG involved and complicated characters that never are what they appear on the surface it just takes a while in the story to slowly reveal it. Enjoy :)
Yeah Scanlan is actually probably my least favorite character of his...well, maybe second least. Taryon was a little boring and obnoxious (even more than Scanlan), but he also had hidden depths.
I don't necessarily hate Scanlan the way she does, but compared to Nott and FCG, he can't compete.
However, it's still hard to hear her hoping for his death so much because I love Sam and respect his character development so much!
@@sandpiperr Scanlan is Sam's first character, and it really shows. It's honestly pretty clear who the long time players were vs. the first time players based on character alone. While I have a soft spot for VM since it's where I started watching, the character work didn't really start to hit until halfway through the Briarwood arc. It's allowed for a much more mature storytelling style that has only grown stronger through the subsequent campaigns.
Something that was pointed out during the cast watch-along: there is absolutely no music in the background for this episode aside from the flashback scenes, the fight scenes, and the final scene. They did this consciously to add a sense of unease and foreboding to the episode: a sense that something was off, wasn't quite right, but that most of the audience wouldn't catch ... just feel for some reason. I think it worked really well.
"You guys suck"
That is kind of a stand in for Matt Mercer (the DM). He is usually the one that does all the NPC but this time in the Live Play Zahra and Kashaw were guest players. Matt comes up with all the lore and the names and all that stuff. Well he does weave in the character's backstories and all they choices they make. But came up with Purvan. It sounded good in his head. All their reaction to the name was practically lifted from the game.
Then there is the beard. The belt is Belt of Dwaven kind. It makes you hardier, gives you a better chance when you interact with dwarves, and give you a 50% chance to grow a beard. In the lore Grog's kind don't grow hair. Travis Willingham (Grog) got the belt some time ago (from this point in time) and kept rolling to see if he got a beard in the morning. This went one for like three or four session. In the end Grog is practically the only Goliath that has facial hair.
Vex and Zahra, it's not necessarily flirting, maybe a little, but it is more that their personality are very similar. So it is like that thing where someone annoys you but you still like them.
I can't wait for her to see Scanlan & Pikes Tiefling Son in the Mighty Nein Series :)
If she likes Vox Machina, she is going to LOVE the Mighty Nein when their show comes out. I'm almost certain Molly will be her favorite, long may he reign.

18:15 Vax has got nicknames for everyone. He calls Pike Pickle, Keyleth Kiki, Vex stubby, Percy Freddy (Cause one of his names is Fredrickstein), don't recall what he calls Scanlan and Grog.
He calls grog big man and he calls Scanlan scan man... So not as interesting of nicknames but still nicknames that he uses for them multiple times.
Also he calls Vex stubby because he is VERY slightly taller than her.
The song from season 1 episode 1 stated Vex and Vax were half elves. Keyleth is also half elf
Just know us critters that watched campaign 1 knew this moment was coming and when they released season 2 there was going to be a week long wait to the next episode and we still watched it lol we know how you are feeling lol
Ironically, Craven Edge was originally drawn to Percy, who after his experience with Orthax palmed it off onto Grog - Grog being too dumb to fool, as the tropers say, is why Craven Edge is marginally safer in his hands than in anyone else's: his simple-minded nature prevents the sword from being able to manipulate him with anything other than offerings of increased strength, since he already is The Big Guy of the team and lacks the ambition or cunning to betray or trick his comrades - mostly. Travis has said during a Q&A that Grog doesn't even realize Craven Edge is trying to corrupt him, he just thinks it's a cool sword that happens to talk. (He treats it like a kid would treat a battle-effects Lightsaber toy.)
Oh those were A Lot of death flags through this episode!

Kinda bummed about all the scanlan hate. I get that his humor isn’t for everyone, but Sam is a cool dude, and all the party members are important
I think he was one of the less experienced players when it comes to DnD. His characters in later campaigns are incredible tho. He also is the best advertiser because his methods are the simple yet effective "bizarre skit he came up with last week" "other people at the table do surprise participation whether they enjoy it or not" "Skit halts for a bit character to read word for word what the company sent Sam him to read." then "skit concludes".
Highlights include making his friends act in a radio play and sneaking in all the fart sound effects for laura's character, and while Laura and Travis were absent because of the birth of their first child, "'reenact" that birth and matt plays the baby who gives the ad-read with an adult sounding voice.
same though. He's my favorite character and his jokes do feel cringey in the cartoon at times but his arc is so dear to me. :(

Not that I have a problem with racy jokes and I never minded them from any otther critical role character, but, idk, there was something about a character who talked about "my mommy" constantly making them and just her general "tee hee, you can't get mad at me for drawing genitals on your face because I'm so cute!" schitck that made me feel icky. I lost interest in C2 because of it.
Still haven't decided if I'm going to watch the Mighty Nein animated series, because I'd love to see Nott and Caleb's stories animated, but it'd also mean lost of Jester and I could do without that.

Vax has rhe best nicknames for his best friends. He calls pike pickle. He calls his sister stubby because she's barely shorter than him. And keyleth is Kiki. He calls grog big guy and scanlan is scanman. The only person I don't think he gives a nickname to is percy but he uses his full name Percival.

The funny part about Grog's beard is that male Goliath's (Grog's race) are normally incapable of any kind of body hair. Due to this, Matt had Travis roll a percentage dice every in game day for him to slowly grow a beard.
Vex actually comes back as a Revenant. A sort of immortal half undead kind of creature. I mean she can still die, but she just keeps coming back no matter what. It's a whole plotpoint at one point where she gets choked to death by a satyr in exchange for a favour.
Yes, vex and vax are half elves. You can tell because their ears are shorter. Keylith is also a half elf but because both her parents were half elves.
Yeah, it seems like in D&D half elves can be from one human parent and one elf parent or 2 half elf parents... And we get to see an example of both in Vex and Vax and Keyleths parents.

when it was coming out, it was 3 episodes at a time, and this is where it cut off for us. big sad. I never watched Critical Roles first campaign, but I've watched campaign 2 and currently on 3, so the animated show is my first experience on this story. So good

iirc Goliaths in dnd lore can't actually grow facial hair, which made the belt such a big deal (apart from the fact that its a quite usefull item either way)
In the show Vex and Zahra have serious exes vibes and the hate flirting is totally a thing.
Meanwhile in the campaign Vex and Zahra met and had a little bit of rivalry then bonded over their shared daddy issues whilst on watch, then Zahra truly won Vex over by talking to trinket with her warlock at will speak with animals and by the end of the first or second session with them both they were best friends still with quite a lot of flirting, Zahra's tail truly has a mind of its own and that mind takes great joy in smacking Vex. Zahra also made arrows for Vex throughout the campaign as well and she was the first one there when Vex died, I think she also helped out in another resurrection ritual because it was important to Vex and I'm pretty sure if they both wanted them their kids would be the about same age too and probably grow up as honorary cousins just as any vox machina kids would (they'd also totally both name a kid after each other in some capacity)

I just thought I would add but when the original episodes posted there was a week between every 3 episodes. So we had to wait a week.

It's just so interesting seeing this from someone who hasn't watched/listened to critical role.
Just here to be the person who asks "Did everyone spot Troy Baker in this episode?" because he's in everything!
Their reaction to Purvan's name was exactly like this, except out of character. Grog's belt is good for warrior types, has a *chance* of the wearer growing a beard (regardless of gender) and allows them to read dwarven... but he's too dumb to read, so. One night, Vax got Grog very drunk, then shaved off *half* the beard as he slept. When Grog realised what had happened, he tried to fill it in by smearing charcoal across that side of his face; it looked awful, so Scanlan illusioned the missing half back.
The sarcophagus was trapped. Touching the armour triggered a wave of death energy. Taliesin rolled high enough to avoid it, but Laura rolled a natural one, and the damage put Vex below 0hp. Instakill. There's nothing to heal. She's dead.
Elf father and human mother, so in his mind they're diluted.
I love your love for Pike.
I also love your hatred for Scanlan - can't stand him either. (Fun fact : For LoVM, they even made him noticably less annoying than in the stream..)

I was just thinking about how it all comes back to pact magic. This episode really was the big jumping off point for so much of it to start coming together.
Keep in mind this is from a d&d game originally so people can and will die. Its been a while but i think there's at least 5 deaths in critical role as a whole, maybe more. I have not seen all of campaign 2 and 3. When it happens a little down the line there will be a new character. Like say a moss and mildew loving 7 foot tall hippy might replace someone. I mean that's just a random example.

Grog and Pike "feel" like two sides of a coin but they are sooooo alike. Pike can be very f#$%&ng brutal when she needs to be, as you'll see, and Grog *is* different, is a player character, because he can be very caring. This season is sooooo good and explores them as a pair a bit more, look forward to it!

This was actually planned. Percy cut a deal with the Slayer's Take to get them the armor in return for information about Ripley. They were well aware of the trap and told Percy how to activate it in order to incapacitate the rest of the team so they could make the exchange. They just didn't know it was a lethal trap
The goddess of death takes whatever she wants. Too bad in this case I think she got very confused.
Yup, Vex is dead. But, now her spirit will possess Trinket, so we getting BAFTA award-winning voice actress, Laura Bailey voicing a bear for the rest of the series.
And that is what happens when you roll a 1 on a save for death magic.
Specifically a very powerful death magic that causes you to 💀 if you go below zero hit points. So it wasn't necessarily just the natural one that caused her to die (if it was a weaker trap and she rolled that one she wouldn't have died.) ...it's the fact that it dealt a shitload of damage and made her go below zero.
Vex really does die, but Vax makes Scanland bring her back as an undead with Delilah’s book, triggering that black orb to activate and seal an eternal pact.
How did Grog not just float in the lake with his inflatable muscles?
