    As a former towboat captain, what that towboat%# captain did was just short of impossible being single handed. Cross wind, outgoing tide, and a narrow inlet= 100 percent on the pucker scale. Although,, at least it was daytime. Sure that captain has been there at night too. Great job skipper!

      I still don't understand why they don't have an extra man on the towboats to assist while the captain is trying to navigate and control his boat in situations like this.

    This shows that even with twin engines, you can lose power--for several different reasons. Bottom line, you need to be ready if/when you lose power. They had anchor lines out--that's good, that is your first stop--even if it does not totally stop you, it can slow you way down while you work on other things--calling for help, waiting for help--and/or trying to get the engines started. I had this happen when my engine sucked up a plastic bag--the auto system sounded an alarm and shut the engine down--to save it from super heating. Glad the anchor was handy--and so were we at getting it out--NOW. Forget the size of the boat, small, medium or large, you damn well better be ready--the sea, she doesn't care at all if you are not ready. Another thing to have is a few "repelling poles" to keep you off the rocks if you are drifting even with anchor drag. I like to keep a small outboard, as a back-up to the main. But if you go that way, remember to check it each time you go out--is it running? Do you know how to lower it into the water? Silly question? Not, it's not, practice everything, IF you need things, you may not have time to sort it out, or to go looking to find it. I actually watched a guy--expensive boat--and he did not know where his anchor was, in complete hysteria as he "looked for the damn thing". Boating is serious stuff, bet recognize it, and don't forget it, run down your check-list every single time you go. "Relax and have a good time"? NO WAY, always be prepared, always be ready.

    I love how people are so fast to judge. That boat wouldve been perfectly fine in those conditions if the engine didnt give out. They dropped the anchors and didnt jump overboard and try to swim, and that is very smart of them.

      Caiden coffman I'm not sure if you're familiar with Jupiter inlet just pass them if you watching that video there is a sandbar that builds that boat what a capsized with a 4 and a 1/2 to 5 knot current that day they would have been swept out in a would have been dam near impossible for rescue to get past that Barr at Barr was breaking well over 10' that day on that small craft advisory they were saying it was 14 to 16' And the winds were Pushing them directly into the South Jedi their anchor did not catch it was dragging due to the extreme current that day high winds That boat would have never survive past the sandbar even if It was running

      Caiden, it not a matter of the many threads of personal judgements, it’s a matter of the day this occurred, there were small craft advisory’s most of the week. With that said the blooming idiots that opted to enter / exit through this inlet put the live of his passengers, first responders at great risk. I have a 39’ Ft vessel and in tip top shape in every way possible, when you have conditions such as these in this inlet, they need to take their ignorant butts down to Lake Worth / Port of Palm Beach inlet. Thus not risking the lives of many people. Mothers will fail, don’t give a shit how new your lil toy is and that needs to be factored in with any trip you take.

    Very dicey. Glad to have come out of that one for sure. Kudos to the recovery team to work under treacherous conditions.
    Many a sigh of relief was breathed after that.

      As in this was your boat? What's up with not knowing the equipment *before* heading out? I'm curious. Even in an old pickup truck multiple tanks means manually operated electrically actuated transfer of fuel between tanks. Glad it worked out! *#NowGoStudy*

    I went out this inlet a few weeks ago and came back in right before a storm on a strong out going tide.i just took my time and used the waves rolling in and my throttle to work my way in every asshole in Jupiter with a big boat came flying in the inlet wide open to avoid the storm. they all cursed me and threw shit at me to get out the way(I was already on the side right up near the rocks and i was only in a 16' key largo with a old two stroke 50.
    Apparently everyone on the jetty was worried too as there was probably 50 people watching and clapping including life gaurds at the ready with floats when I got the boat all the way back in... Jupiter inlet is no joke and can get real sketchy especially for small under powered boats.seeing this video is a big eye opener.

    Grew up there . That inlet eats boats , used to anyway. Usually fishing boats overloaded when I was a kid . Glad this worked out .

    operator of distressed vessel should have had(a lifejacket,pfd) every one sitting down and away from the bow of the boat.
    Great job by the tow boat operator , it's shameful law enforcement is only staffing one person to their vessels.
    You also gotta love surfer dude heading over just in case.

    Boat has two fuel tanks, the switch was on the auxiliar tank and they ran out of gas on that tank, they didn’t know about the second fuel tank and how to switch over, unfortunately!
    Good job on the rescue team 👏👏

      Anchors would have hooked up better and sooner if they had paid out more line. If the anchors are down just in front of the boat every swell lifts them up unless they get hooked on a rock or such.

    Jupiter Inlet is like this most of the time. I Jetski there all the time and the inlet inself is an extremely rough area just how you see here all the time. It doesn't mean conditions are like this everywhere else as you see toward the end of the video its smooth as glass and its the same right when you get past the inlet as well. This is somewhat normal conditions for this inlet specifically.

    I drive in this inlet a lot and it is very stressful at times. So glad everyone is OK. I cannot tell if there are small children on the boat. I will be honest, there have been times I will turn around if it looks too rough and save it for another day!

    As a frequent user of the Jupiter inlet, first kudos to the TowBoat Captain, as to the idiots on the boat, especially the owner, there was a small craft advisory out on the 4th for a reason, you put lives at risk cause of your stupidity, you are very lucky things went the way they did. Check your conditions next time, it’s part of boating and your responsibility as a captain and an owner. Jupiter inlet takes no prisoners!!!

    If both engines died it was more than likely a fuel issue... But after watching it, it's apparent that they may of had an electrical issue being the engines weren't trimmed up to get out of the mouth of the inlet at least. More details on this story??

      Apparently, the engines last oil changes weren't done by that gal in the bikini. She's going to do all of mine from now on. Have to figure out how to explain this to my woman......

    Crossbows are great to shoot a light line over the bow of the boat you want to rescue, They then use the light line to pull over a stronger cable with which to tow their boat.

    good job. Seems like 2 rescuers in ONE boat would make that a lot easier though. seems odd they go solo, hard to drive and throw that rope.

      We do rescues like this on a regular basis this is only getting a lot of attention because of it was caught on film are rescues that we do are a lot more dangerous and yes we are one man crew sometimes we Run 2 man crews But as you can see no problem getting That line out to the vessel we are highly trained captains

    When you're hanging on anchor the engines act as rudders. With the current running through there if the engines had been turned the opposite direction I think he could have gotten more safe space between the stern and the rocks. Food for thought.

    Jupiter inlet, adrift on a Jupiter boat....locally built boat. Bad luck for sure but obviously some kind of failure in the electrical or fuel. Usually when two outboards die at the same time it's due to bad fuel. I have been there myself and it really sucks and very frustrating.

    Plot twist....Jupiter boat in Jupiter inlet. This can happen and it has happened to the best captains. Happened to me though luckily not in those dangerous conditions. I got a load of really bad gas once knocking out both engines at the same time (new engines) which left me adrift in the channel. Today's fuel efficient outboards take a while to use the fuel in the lines. So I got gas and was able to run at idle for a good 20 minutes before the engines stalled out. I had good gas in the other tank but it takes time to switch tanks and prime the engines and it still wont start up quick. Sometimes it takes turning the engine over for a while to flush the bad gas out letting the good gas in. In that scenario the captain had to make a decision. Either try to get the engines restarted while in a nasty inlet with a boat full of people or try and anchor the boat to save it from being tossed into the rocks or washed out the inlet. Nothing more dangerous than a boat adrift with no power and not anchored in a heavy sea.

    Least there is a safety crew there to help in Destin florida. The coast guard nor FWC will assist in boat issues unless they are in the water they won’t off any assistance. And I’ve witnessed it first hand so of course Good Samaritans step in and do the job

    The end of the video tells the story, the channel was relatively calm aside from the current, beyond that was a death wish. It appears the boater engines died in the channel and they were being swept out. fortunately, the harbormaster/coast guard was on call.

      It was their aux tank ... fuel guage shows how many gallons on the GPS dads boat kids home from college break not use to dads boat that was the storie I got after I got them to the dock

      @@captainjohncolucci819 Fuel gauge was showing the main tank, not the aux tank.... I guessed as much. After decades on the water the only way I trust how much fuel is on board now is by actually putting fuel on board right before I go out.

    0:34 a small kid jumps or falls into the water, then quickly three others pull him back into the boat. Lucky the kid did not drown. Several people are still not yet wearing life preservers.
    8 or possibly 9 people were in the boat; 1 or 2 might have been adults.
    0:53 large teen or adult size person in black still not wearing any PFD, hanging around at and over the bow. All the children were running around as if no one was in charge or they were not paying attention to adult direction, if any.
    Who is the total amateur “captain” who took all those kids out in that water? Most of the kids initially were wearing no life preservers. When both engines died, the “captain” did not know it was because they were running on an empty Aux tank, and he/she needed to switch to the full Main fuel tank.
    1:50 Rescue boat enters scene. Several people are still milling about without life preservers.
    2:22 Person in black finally has a PFD, after climbing all over the boat, including up on the fly.
    2:50 Towline thrown. Almost missed collecting the line due to so many kids and no adults to receive the line. Again, no apparent adult direction.
    Final result: a lucky towline rescue, a brave and skilled lone rescuer.
    Any of those amateur boaters could have gone overboard to their deaths due to the careless boating behavior. Kids were running all over the boat as if it were sitting on the beach, when it was actually dead in the water, next to the rocks, in a dangerous inlet.
    They were all put in danger by an amateur “captain” who was simply playing at being a party boat chauffeur - load up the boat with 8 or 9 people, it’s all for grins. He/she should get a lot more training and experience before ever going on the water again, especially if he/she is responsible for so many children.

    If I had to put money on the cause, I'd bet my two cents that the battery was not housed/strapped/bolted down properly and with a violent boat movement it fell out of place and one or both of the battery leads was ripped off.
    So why did the engines die in the first place, Sherlock?
    Good question, how about with the boat movement the skipper fell against the kill switch.
    Surely he was not so stupid that he ran out of fuel and also was so stupid that he did not know to raise the engines to reduce drag and ease the tow.
    Moral of the story is we are all guessing and the guys that post these videos should provide MORE INFORMATION PLEASE.
    Postscript:
    I lost my two cents!
    They had fuel onboard but the engines ran dry because they did not know how to switch from the empty auxiliary tank to the main tank which still had plenty of fuel in it!!!! LOL

      Dry tank open engine sucks air not fuel from full tank. Happens alot.

    Didn't get it, he had 2 outboards and they both don't work Then I understood it, He never raised his outboards for less drag for towing. Boating safety 1/3 fuel out 2/3 left to come back in As running time goes for outboards at full throttle. Its 10 time your HP for fuel consumption I.E a 150 hp outboard will use 15 gal an hr full throttle

    Is it normal to cross this bar on a heavy ebb? Seams like no one care what the tide is doing. Here in Oregon the Barr crossings are done at slack or on the flood with some exceptions for smaller exchanges or small swell.

    To me, this rescue could be simplified -
    merely grapple the line to the anchor, which was working, then pull that anchor and line to the rescue boat,
    then pull the boat to safety. Simple, simple, simple.

    That week there were 8 to 10 ft swells on top of the 4 to 6 ft waves.
    We stayed inside on the intracoastal to Stuart.
    Only an idiot would go out there.

Dudes in the boat fucked up, but they handled it well and got it anchored. Another guy was trying the swaying helm station attempting to eliminate the causes of power loss. I want to know what backwards shithole you live in and how it would have gone down there?

      The conditions aren't that bad; I've been out in far worse. Of course, I check my fuel level before leaving, and take other sensible precautions.

      I take it you're not a boater. The conditions aren't that bad; look at how the boat is riding at anchor, and how the tow boat is handling. If that boat hadn't had a fuel problem it would have been a fun day.

      SeikiBrian I've been a boater for 30+ years, including long distance ocean cruising. I even took the Coast Guard boating safety course as a kid. As for the weather, yes I agree it may be fine on inland waters, but this is obviously not the case. Just look at the surf rolling on the bars -- any prudent boater knows better. But, seeing as you are much more skilled than I, go ahead and have fun!

      My guess is they were considering the distance from the jetty. Too much rode and your swing radius might include the rocks. It's a tough math problem to have to do with lives at stake.

    From the initial sudden starts and stops of the disabled vehicle under tow, I'm assuming they were on the rocks or at least the outdrives were hanging up on the bottom.
