A customer brought in a 2016 Yard Machines by MTD 42" riding lawn mower. The steering was messed up. When you turned the steering wheel, the tires would not turn. I go step by step on replacing the steering shaft and bushing.

😊 thank you so much sir. My mower has been broken for years now. At least 7 years It's a 1990s husky with a Tecumseh motor and I've always been intimidated to fix it but now I can. Thank you!

The one I did on an MTD Toro had a separate steering gear on the shaft. Much easier to put in than this one. I only needed to remove the deck and no other components other than the gear.bushing itself.

Thanks for this video - just about to order the parts and carry this out - much appreciate the time and effort you put in to explain this repair.

Thanks that was very helpful. Got to do this when the parts come in.
One question what was the tool you used when you hit the screw on the underside of the mower and why?

@EdHallPhotoFL - It is a manual 'Impact Driver' - By hitting the large main body with a hammer, the force is transmitted through to the driver end, causing a small movement that turns (clockwise or anticlockwise) and the force of the hammer hitting the main body also sends a shock to the nut or screw that aids it to loosen. I found a TH-cam video about it here that may explain it better...

Once you get it out put a regular bolt back and blue lock tight liquid 😊

Steel steering shaft inside metal bushing with NO lubrication. What could go wrong???
What an idiotic design. I had 44 year old Simplicity that gave me no problems ever. Original seat, bearings, deck, ball joints. It was made in the USA when people cared about the quality.
Now I too have a newer piece of crap mower and I have to replace this bushing every season.

The bronz bushing is way too small and it’s made too fail in a short amount of time
MTD is not as good as the China companies 😢😢😢
Wish Murray would come back ❤❤❤
