Brad, This is Jerry Seago. Just wanted you to know that this video helped me repair a lady friends mower that had the same problem. It took more time to put the mower deck back on than it did to repair it. I really appreciate that you posted this and that our path has crossed again in this video. May God bless you and your dear wife!
Jerry Seago wow! What a small world! Great to see you! I hope you and your wife are doing well and maybe someday we can get together! Our best to the missus!
Thanks for sharing, After watching your video I was able to know exactly what parts to get and how to put them on saving some money by fixing it myself.
Thank you so much for showing this! I was able to drop the bushing down through a hole from above that the steering shaft passes through. The hole is made to be big enough to drop it through. Once the parts came, this was easy. Thanks again!
My TX star are just about to bloom. You guys have such a pretty flowerbed. Your workshop looks like Dad's work area in the garage, he has a winch attached to a big piece of lumber to raise up his riding mower.
The texas star are some really pretty flowers. Its a shame they only last a day or two. The winch sure makes it easier for me to get my hugeness under it.
I encountered the same thing with my mower. I had a new bearing and pinion but when I realized the fan (rack) gear was worn I was 50 miles from the parts house. I removed the fan gear and welded the gears and took a skinny wheel and made new teeth. I figured it would at least get me through the season and I'd replace it, but that was 8 years ago and it's still going. Necessity is the mother of invention. Nowadays they call it a life hack.
After watching your video my steering is fixed. And I really liked the ending of the video. I landscaped for 13 years I retired 7 years ago. I did the new flower beds. And I install the plants. Your wife did a excellent job on the variety of the plant choices and the the arrangements. A lot of color in that one little bed. And it does not look cluttered. Most jobs we did veryed from Little $300 jobs up to $70,000. Do you have more flower beds to show? Thanks for the video.
Thanks! This video is at my old house. I moved to texas and at our new place, we built some new gardens. She’s had a blast putting new flowers in them.
Talk about a timely video. I got my old Team Murray with what I believe is this same problem right now. It will steer an then it locks up. I was thinking maybe I should make a video and ask ol' BC what he thinks and lo' and behold you put this video up....LOL! Thank you.
rchopp I thought about that but the wear was smack dab in the center of the gear. I even thought about a couple washers to move the gear out a little where it would contact the outer edge of it. I decided on a new gear in the hopes that it would keep me from having to replace the rack anytime soon.
You will soon regret not replacing the Sector (Rack) plate. The gear teeth are very worn and it will continue to jump a tooth on hard turns. Getting 2 of the 4 bolts off IS a big deal. I was able to replace the Pinion and bushing on my JD 145, but will no doubt have to replace the sector soon. It was not worn as much as yours. You can buy 0.032" thick washers to keep the sector shaft on a level plane instead of riding up under pressure.
Your home place is beautiful, its a good thing your wife knows how to grow flowers lol. Beautiful really Beautiful. Oh, and the mower repair tips were great too. ;)
Man, I've had the worst luck out of Cub cadet. Had a 48" cut and a 52". The 48 threw a rod at 10 hours. Cub replaced it then at 27 hours she went again and they said I was on my own. Stupid me went and bought another one at the depot and it blew at 52 hours not to mention I had to replace the spindles on the belly at 30 hours. I had performed all routine maintenance myself and washed her after use. Ashley's saw shop told me they'd had quite a few complaints. That'll be my last experience with Cub. Think I have a drive belt laying around if you want it. LOL
I think SixtyFiveFord has a video that shows how to build the teeth back up with some welding and grinding. It is a lot of work but would save some money.
How does one go about changing the worn steering sector plate? The center bolt is not accessible from the top. I cannot find any info on it. Thank you!
100 hrs on our cub and 3 belts burn up before they told us about recall on pully , wheel fell of couple times , steering gears are my problem now , there are 2 bolts with bushings on the other gear that are wore out also . bought a husky mower about the same time as the cub and havent had one problem
Gregory Thomas I didn't see that when I was doing it and I'm wearing the strongest glasses Walmart sells. I guess I'll have to get on Amazon and look for number 4 glasses.
How could this have been prevented? No grease or oil on open gears, just a dry lube like graphite. Oil and grease holds sand/dirt and will wear out the gears.
Trying to do the exact same job on mine right now, but the bolt is incredibly tight and I cannot get it off. How did you stop the steering shaft from turning, that would have been super handy to see in the video? Great work! :-)
JimsEquipmentShed at least they made it out of bronze. The steering shaft would be a bigger pain and more costly to replace. In the cub manual, they refer to that little part as a bearing, not a bushing. Yeah,,,, right.
Now here's a thought for you. What if you put some tack welds on those rack teeth. Then filed them down to match the other teeth. If you decide you need to replace might be a good last ditch effort.
moviemakerwannabe I had about 6 of them scattered around the yard, then came the wind and I'm guessing the deer and I just gave up and gave the rest of them to Texas Bev. What I have in the yard is trial and error with the deer
So Cub Cadet uses the same shitty steering assembly as the Craftsman rider mowers. I find that amazingly stupid. What engineer thought this through or did they think at all?
If you want to do the job right you really need to replace all three parts. If you don't then it may work but it's not gonna work as well or as long with the teeth worn out on one side or the other.
What a nasty design. The gears should be enclosed so they don't pick up all the crap that the mower kicks up. This must act as a very good grinding paste, ruining the gears. Just as well you know how to fit the new parts !
If you put grease on it, the very first time you mow it would be a messy wad of dirt and grass. DO NOT GREASE IT! IT WILL WEAR EVEN FASTER FROM THE DIRT IT WILL ATTRACT!
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose I learned a long time ago if you hunt and kill an animal you have to prepare the meat right away if you don't kill it all you do is feed it and process the meat when you're ready for it then

I knew there was a bushing in there. Showed me exactly what I need. Thank you! Looks like your rack is really worn too.
Thanks for sharing, After watching your video I was able to know exactly what parts to get and how to put them on saving some money by fixing it myself.
David Gebhardt thanks very much for letting me know!
Thank you so much for showing this! I was able to drop the bushing down through a hole from above that the steering shaft passes through. The hole is made to be big enough to drop it through. Once the parts came, this was easy. Thanks again!
Great! Glad it worked out for you!
Good video. Just did mine. The original was plastic. Surprised it made it as long as it did

@@bctruck I live in Crosby Texas.
@@johnnylangford6952 I live in waskom, at I-20 and the Louisiana line but just inside texas by about a mile.
Thank you! Couldn't have done it without you.
Glad to help!

Thanks for the video, made for a quick and easy fix on my Toro! Done in about 20 minutes.
Glad it helped!
Nice gardens.... the best part if the "guide" who's telling you .... and us... all about them...
Al Stock she is real proud of her gardens.
and rightly so...
Great job on showing that repair. I suppose that is a bronze self-lubricating bushing? Nice "flowerbed". I'm bringing my rolling papers!!
5 Acres on the Bayou its one of those maintenance free bushings. Zig zag 1.5's
Nice mower fix, I wonder if you had flipped the pinion gear over if it would have tightened things up a bit. Mrs. BC has a nice looking flower garden.
rchopp I thought about that but the wear was smack dab in the center of the gear. I even thought about a couple washers to move the gear out a little where it would contact the outer edge of it. I decided on a new gear in the hopes that it would keep me from having to replace the rack anytime soon.
You can use a telescopic parts magnet to get the old one out and feed the new one in.
You will soon regret not replacing the Sector (Rack) plate. The gear teeth are very worn and it will continue to jump a tooth on hard turns. Getting 2 of the 4 bolts off IS a big deal.

It worked and I got my Cub Cadet fixed! Thanks

Suni B thanks! I have a brown thumb!
Thank you for the video it was very helpful
Great!
Mmmm... Time for some high-biscuit and chee ;-)
Thanks for the vid! Replacing my pinion gear & collar today
Thank you I have the same problem But I have a Toro but same Issues
Same part that fails. Probably even the same part number.

Just add some grease and it will last for a long while. Wow, the flowers are sure blooming nicely.
wyattoneable I greased everything up real good and I'll keep the king pins greased to try and keep the stress off the rack.
I have put 2 of them on my 2003 troybilt, and also 2 new tie rod ends last month. Also a gasket. Hoping to get a few more year out of it.
This winter i'm gonna replace the little plastic bushing that the tie rod ends set in and rebuild that carb again.
years ago we had a lawn mower that did the same thing, it was pretty old and we sold it. I think it was a wizard brand mower.
wizard is an old brand. That probably would have been worth saving. Todays lawnmowers are tin junk.
Great job
Thanks!
Nice! Love your furbaby.
Good video thanks. What breed of dog is that?
that is a maltese/poodle mix.
This video help me out a great deal thanks.
Fredrick Carney thanks for letting me know!
Never enough flowers. Beautiful.
I think SixtyFiveFord has a video that shows how to build the teeth back up with some welding and grinding. It is a lot of work but would save some money.
crap! Ill have to look for that! I hate spending money if I dont have to.
How does one go about changing the worn steering sector plate? The center bolt is not accessible from the top. I cannot find any info on it. Thank you!
nice work Brad

All modern mowers now are crap, built with the crappy eat parts they can find. I buy nothing but old mowers and fix them now.
How do you raise the steering shaft after removing the pinion gear ?
Just pull it up from the steering wheel. The pinion gear is what keeps it from raising.
Thanks!
That old bushing has a crack across it...can see it @ 2:54 & @ 7:01 even better.
Oh officer it really is a flower...hot biscuits! ;)
you're right! I see it at exactly 2:52. that sure explains a lot!
It goes all the way through...you can see it on the back @ 7:02
The crack is on the bottom-left around the 7 o'clock position.
Gregory Thomas I didn't see that when I was doing it and I'm wearing the strongest glasses Walmart sells. I guess I'll have to get on Amazon and look for number 4 glasses.
What a PITA. Very pretty flower
How could this have been prevented? No grease or oil on open gears, just a dry lube like graphite. Oil and grease holds sand/dirt and will wear out the gears.
yes that is part of the hot biscuit family you got the Honey Tree next to it
Kevin Romas no wonder why they deer won't leave the gardens alone! Biscuits with honey!
Brad, with your welding skill, you could probably do a fill weld and file it out...
I'll try that if I need to.
Trying to do the exact same job on mine right now, but the bolt is incredibly tight and I cannot get it off. How did you stop the steering shaft from turning, that would have been super handy to see in the video? Great work! :-)
Pipe wrench on the shaft.
Having problems removing the gear rack or fan gear.. the 4th bolt on your video can not get out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!
Sorry but it been a while since I sold this mower and I can’t remember what it looks like under there.
I had a simplicity tractor with the same issue, it's kind of an odd area for them to cheap out. My kubota lawn tractor has an actual steering box.....
JimsEquipmentShed at least they made it out of bronze. The steering shaft would be a bigger pain and more costly to replace. In the cub manual, they refer to that little part as a bearing, not a bushing. Yeah,,,, right.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose HMmmmm not confidence inspiring that they don't understand the difference eh?
How come you still keep the old cub cadet around now that you got the zero turn?
To pull the trailer and my wife mows sometimes too.
Now here's a thought for you.
What if you put some tack welds on those rack teeth.
Then filed them down to match the other teeth.
If you decide you need to replace might be a good last ditch effort.
John Solar 283 ™ that's a great idea John. I'll give that a try if I need to replace it.
That must be what I've been doing wrong. In order to fix the steering on my mower, I need to plant marijuana, right?
No ,, but if you do,,, I’d be happy to lend a hand at harvest time!
That's a beautiful flower garden Mrs. BC. I had black hollyhocks one year that got me many comments. Have you tried those?
moviemakerwannabe I had about 6 of them scattered around the yard, then came the wind and I'm guessing the deer and I just gave up and gave the rest of them to Texas Bev. What I have in the yard is trial and error with the deer
go make me a sandwich!!!
BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose not funny
the flowers are pretty!
Im gonna have to share the revenue with you and Dwayne for the cameo appearance.
So how did you get the washer in?
I stuck it up in there and maneuvered it into place with a piece of bailing wire.
Thank you!!!!
It’s been 6 years since I did this. It’s still working fine.
I call flowers "bloomin weeds". :) Just ask my wife. It might look pretty, but if you can't eat it, what use is it. :)
well people could say that about my dogs. If you cant eat them what good are they. I say,,,,,who says you cant eat them?
Yeah......Call the guy
What a nasty design. The gears should be enclosed so they don't pick up all the crap that the mower kicks up. This must act as a very good grinding paste, ruining the gears. Just as well you know how to fit the new parts !
River Huntingdon that's exactly why I don't grease this heat. It just begs the grit and dust to hang on and grind away at the steering gear.
What that new part called
I think it’s called a steering pinion.
A little grease wouldn't hurt...in fact load it up instead...
If you put grease on it, the very first time you mow it would be a messy wad of dirt and grass. DO NOT GREASE IT! IT WILL WEAR EVEN FASTER FROM THE DIRT IT WILL ATTRACT!
we use to have glad but the dog duge them all up tgen they had moved the gas meater to there but they are pretty
time to make some deer bacon
Kevin Romas when we moved here 30 years ago, we fed them! What were we thinking???
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose I learned a long time ago if you hunt and kill an animal you have to prepare the meat right away if you don't kill it all you do is feed it and process the meat when you're ready for it then
good job bc
Pretty property
Tom Burgess thanks!
That nut is not the problem! Sector & pinion gears are the problem. The sector ( rack ) is more than worn out. It's missing teeth.
I guess that you figured out how to hold you tongue just right!!!
CuriousYellowSolar if I didn't get it the first time, it would have taken 20 minutes to fish it out with a piece of bailing wire.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose lol!!!
Cannot get bolt off to do job
Do you have an impact wrench?
725th! LOL!!!!
Bruh saaame
