I love your perfume passion Dacob! I think every Shalimar formulation/strength, EVERY iteration is a beauty. Also, the infamous flankers: the Ode a la Vanilles (sigh), the soufflé flanker, the parfum initial flanker (and it’s flankers!)…. All so beautiful! I hope Guerlain keeps Shalimar as it is.
Love that as you say, everyone has a story associated with a fragrance; a memory of an experience. Dacob, it would be amazing to elicit and journal people’s life experiences through the fragrances that they wore at the time. Only you could do it justice with your unique storytelling 🤲🏻❤️
Oooh...I love Shalimar since I was 14yo. I found a 30ml extrait from late 60's....in purple velvet box. I opened it last year for the first time. It is heavenly! Great video Dacob...😍😍😍
Shalimar parfum is absolutely beautiful. I have the modern and the vintage from the 50’s I purchased from a collector. Both smell absolutely beautiful. They are very similar. However, in the vintage, the civet calms the powderiness down and balances it more with the Smokey vanilla and the spice. The civet also makes it smell a bit more mature which I like. Both modern and vintage smell almost identical. I give credit to Guerlain and any other perfume company that created a fragrance decades ago, still sell it, reformulated the fragrance over time and still managed to keep it smelling similar to the original. Love Shalimar.
Thank you for sharing with us your comparison of the vintage vs modern formula 🥰🥰🥰 this will be helpful for future viewers of this video who read the comments 💖💖💖

This is an absolutely stunning story and review. It really makes sense to me. My Mimi (maternal grandmother) wore Shalimar, and my mom has her little 1/4 oz beauty of a bottle which has maybe two drops in it. I know she will never use, but will just open it, and have that scent memory of her mom. So I wanted one of my own, for the same reason, and to be able to wear what Mimi wore. I found a 1/4 oz bottle recently for about 48.00. Had to snag it. Anxiously awaiting its arrival. Thank you again, Dacob. These reviews are always just such a joy.
I'm so excited to watch this! I found a 1981 EDT gold metal refillable bottle at an estate sale today for 4$-it was half full! I was nervous to spray on my skin but I took the plunge and what a blessing! Loving it and again.... haven't even finished your review but so pleased I found another Dacob review!
Is it just as good as the original or better? Is it different or retains the same essence of its mother ? I’ve been debating getting the Philtre, but have been exploring other Guerlains like Mitsouko and L’Heure Bleue.
I like your descriptions and reviews a lot! Shalimar is a beauty. Years ago I smelled it and found it a mess. Just last weekend I saw it on a low shelf, and I checked it again and I immediately fell in love with it. Beautiful and with character at the same time. It smelled classic, timeless. Fantastic!
Great review. If you have some time, will and occasion I would be interested to hear something from you about Habanita (another one who turns 100 this year). And so happy you talk about books. Do you know Boulgakov's Master and Marguerite/Margareth? Story of a writter in Soviet's Moskow visited by the Devil... Three perfumes are mentionned in it: N°5, Mitsouko and Narcisse Noir (Caron).

I love the story behind this perfume, it intrigued my interest in finding a vintage. When I first tried this, I recoiled in horror, then, it became love. Strange, intriguing and ever changing on the skin. I have two 1/4 oz pure perfume extraits from 1967. It says it on the back of the box, the Baccarat bottle says Parfum N°7091 and the long rigid bottle is N0. 7090 says extrait and has a price tag of $13.50. They came in a velvety purple box and the outer box is white with black rigid stripes. I opened the long bottle because I wanted to know what is smelled like, it was heavenly. I've had them for quite some time now and now with your review, I dabbed some on again and it's a bit oily and lemony, I'm sure it will change as the day goes on. Would these have Ambergris in them since they are both from 1967? I also have one in .25 oz parfume from 2006 or 07. Love the cologne version btw very refreshing and got compliments.🥰
Lovely review thank you Dacob 🙏🏻 I’ve been in love with Shalimar since 1981. Had a 7.5ml extrait de parfum bottle, which is empty but I treasure it, so beautiful. Back then it was packaged in a purple velveted box. I don’t have the little tasse anymore… Also still have the eau de toilette from 1985, which I still use from time to time. It’s still excellent and lasts and lasts on my skin! Recently I got the new limited Millesime Vanilla Planifolia. Opening is less sharp, more vanillic, also a work of fragrance art and lovely, but, to my nose on my skin at least, lasting a lot shorter, unfortunately. Le Lion to me still has the power I would have liked the Shalimar to have ❤️ Coromandel same thing: powerful juice! Looking forward to your review of Le Lion!
I would love to hear your thoughts on the EDP concentration of Shalimar! I love how in-depth you get when reviewing/walking us through a fragrance. I got a bottle of the EDP and now want to get the Extrait concentration! I’m absolutely loving the EDP, it’s so smokey, vanilla, and powdery on me!
Great video! I use Shalimar when I am in my introvert mood and i need to pamper myself. I use chanel # 5 as my embellished curtain -a facade- when i present myself to public occasions. ❤ PS. Could you make a video with perfumes used as mood fixers? What make you happy, calm, optimistic etc. Something as a first aid kit? Perfumes are life saviors.❤
How I love! the way you describe scents ❤ You make them all "come alive" like characters in a novelle - it is ensnaring, seductive, poetic, captivating and truly an art form you master to the fullest (in my opinion) Shalimar really IS like a memory ❤ It is somehow present and fleeing at the same time. I adore this scent. It has character, and I find it very sensual without it being in your face seductive.
Lovely! I have never smelled the new extrait (I'm so curious now!) but do wear a vintage bottle (velvet marley horse box), which I adore and wear at home or to bed. I would love to do (or hear/see, hint hint) a side by side comparison one day. I get a slight and pleasant rubber/gas/oil/leather in the opening and it's a bit skanky in the good way. After a while, it settles into such breathtaking, deep, soulful, vanilla...well, only Dacob could find the words to do her justice. :) Hooray for Shalimar extrait! Hooray for Dacob! As with No 5, it feels like wearing precious history and true art.

excellent review and historical review of this iconic fragrance. You give everything such a metaphysical conception and do it with such class and excellence. Thank you. 😊
I have been wearing Shalimar since i was 12 now 21. I love that powder smokey vanilla smell with some citrus.Takes me back to the 1920s in my mind i also love L'heure Bleue.
the way i see pure parfum/extraits (whether its a roja or a guerlain or ect.) is that when YOU want to smell the fragrance on yourself, the fragrance being thick and opulent throughout the whole day, invest in the extrait of your favorite if its availible. if you get close with a significant other, you best believe they'll smell it too.
I have a bottle of Shalimar EDP. My husband and I thought it smelled like a cleaning fluid. Based on the description of the notes, I should love it. I like amber woody fragrances like Coco, Opium (original), & Halston. Shalimar did not smell good on me, and it was long lasting. 🙁
A little late in finding this 🙋🏻♀️Dacob but I have always adored Shalimar; I have a nice little collection and only found out recently about the limited editions with gorgeous artwork on the bottles. So hard to obtain in Australia 😭,however I have sourced a few beauties. I have a 1960’s bottle unopened and was petrified opening it but watched you ( albeit I was freaking out a bit when you had the scissors at the front 🫣)and will crack that baby open on my day off👏🏻👏🏻. This will be special, aaaand I will buy myself some flowers to enhance the visual ta daaaa moment. Loved the history . Thank youuu Dacob 🧡 Stani.. ps I love Le Lion… very different to Shalimar
Hi Dacob, I loved it when you first smelled it on your wrist, and you said "delicate", I like delicate at the moment. It sounds beautiful, I will try to track it down. I am also have such love for the elusive pure parfums, something so unique and magical about them. I so enjoyed your poetic review of this masterpiece, the back story and the olfactory experience. I can't think of any contemporary perfumes that have that "stone" quality ( mind you, I dont go much pass Chanel, Guerlain and a few Frederic malle). I would be interested in your thoughts ( when you have time) on Guerlain's Jicky, I do love it, though didn't always, and Guerlain's "Vetiver"- a first love in my Guerlain collection. Thanks as always!
Patience helps. Sometimes a perfume doesn't match with the period. A bad impression in winter can turn out to a very good surprise in spring. Exactly my experience with Le Lion. And now I'm addicted. Nowadays people don't train their nose to appreciate complex perfumes. They are influenced by the market and the shampoos scents, the fast bought and quickly forgotten...
You are so right that Shalimar is a definite 'try before you buy.' I bought the EDP about a year ago after reminiscing about youthful times using my best friend's mother's perfume (usually with her permission). I so wish I had sprung for the pure perfume.
its just a bent piece of metal.. maybe brass... but opening it stresses out the bent part too much and could brake it... and the silk thread is knotted at the bent part of it so even if one were to open it, one would still need to cut the thread in order to open the perfume bottle the first time. Either way, its a nifty little giblet. haha xoxo
I know they do not show any amber or civet in the description. However, like many of Guerlain's fragrances, there is a slight skank that is coming from something animalic in the opening. In the dry down, it softens and becomes like a powdery cloud that envelopes you. I disagree that it is not a beast. You do have to be careful to not over apply the pure perfume. You can always reapply, but a few drops packs a punch. I think the people that don't like it have smelled it on someone that applied too much and it was knocking people down.
Hi. People should remember about trying the perfumes before they purchase it. You describe it very well, following your perception. I really like the house of Gerlain and their work. I think they have one of the most elegant bottles. Shalimar is a classic beauty. Unfortunately i can not say the same about the fragrance. I have tried it on women and on myself in few occasions to convince myself that it smells nice or understand how it evolves. Well, to me it stinks like two old paper pages glued together with an indian glue or some floor disinfectant used in church... Nothing elegant, seductive or feminine about it. It is sour, dry, smokey and full of incense. Yes, i have it original from Gerlain. As i said. It is not to criticize such a historical perfume. It is only to underline how subjective the perception may be. Keep up the good work.
Have you smelled the parfum or are you talking about other concentrations of Shalimar? The parfum is very soft but I can see how the other concentrations could easily go in the direction you described in your comment. 💖
I might need this, it's 305€ here in Europe, but the flacon and the legend! It's such a glorious old world perfume. First time I sniffed the EdP I was in awe!
Good grief i'm afraid you'll want to march me off to the gallows then as I am guilty of all the sins you list plus, plus, plus. I am convinced the typical 'inlfuencer' would take great pleasure in hunting for me and kill all my pleasure in misbehaving.
No clue... But the fact that mine is four years old tells us just how little this concentration sells if it was still in stock when I bought it... xoxo
@@essence-tiallydacob9611 Perfume in splash bottles with a dabber are almost for the Museum. Still 30 years ago it was easy to find them form most of the fragrances and brands, in three regular sizes (7,5 ml, 15 and 30, even 60 at Guerlain and for some Chanel). But nowadays it's all about sprays and shower gels... Time goes on, use change and so do the clients, the markets. Europe has not its prior weight... New markets count way more. But once again, Dacob, great review. Shalimar is one of the milestones of my perfumes wardrobe. When shall you give a try to Habanita?...
This was so poetic! You're an excellent story teller! And oh my God listening to you talking so passionately about shalimar is making me fall in love with it even more! I didn't even know that the extrait exists! Buying it in this lifetime is now one of my many mottos 💜
omg i just bought this 😬 i am not at all knowledgeable about perfumes i just kind of bought it because im trying to find a good bergamot perfume i could wear this coming winter nights but i dont smell anything citrus about this. super pleasant on the nose though. like you said very powdery scent. it doesnt linger but it almost comforts me
I'm all about that extrait life ❤️ Got super spoiled with Terenzi fragrances and it's hard to go back to weaker formulations. I recently picked up Chanel No.5 eau de parfum and it smells so faint compared to the older formulations from the 80's and 90's.

@superdacob Please read this for future videos. I’m just trying to help Just so you know, ambergris would not be listed on the ingredients list because the ingredients list does NOT list the notes of the perfume. Listing the ingredients of perfume is mandatory, as with any cosmetics per cosmetics regulations (FDA for the USA, EU directive for EU). 'Perfume' or 'fragrance' is the 'secret formula' and may be listed as such. The oakmoss extracts and other aroma chemicals listed are compounds that belong to the 26+ perfume allergen list that has been made mandatory to be listed by the EU directive. As most perfumes are either created in Europe or distributed in Europe, those ingredients must be listed. That doesn't mean that say the listed 'linalool' is per se synthetic. It may also be a constituent of bergamot or lavender essential oils used in the formula. Shortly: it has nothing to do with IFRA, but with the EU legislation on labeling cosmetics. If a fragrance has no listed ingredients, like Bond 9’s fragrances, then you can bet that it doesn’t contain any naturals. Therefore, when a fragrance does contain a huge list-it’s usually using more naturals with allergens. Shalimar parfum is so well blended the synthetics are not noticeable. You must try a vintage parfum from pre 1967- it’s otherworldly. Love the video by the way. I can’t wait to see what you think in 3 months once it macerates and becomes deeper and more resinous with deeper touches of oppoponax, civet and labadanum.
Ambergris would be listed. In fact, it is listed on other Guerlain fragrances. Just check the list on the Encens Mythique fragrance packaging ;) ambergris is clearly listed as such. Xoxo
@@essence-tiallydacob9611 Hi Dacob, thanks for the reply! So, I just looked at both of my Encens Mythique boxes-the original 2012 and the new 2018-it is not listed on either box as an ingredient/allergen. That is because it is not identified as one of the 26 allergens by the EU cosmetics regulation, and as far as I know, it is perfectly safe. Also, most of the ingredients on the list are components naturally found in various naturals. Encens Mythique INGREDIENTS: ALCOHOL • PARFUM (FRAGRANCE) AQUA (WATER) • COUMARIN • ETHYLHEXYL METHOXY- CINNAMATE • ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE EUGENOL • LIMONENE • BUTYL METHOXYDIBEN- ZOYLMETHANE • BUTYLENE GLYCOL DICAPRYLATE/ DICAPRATE • EVERNIA FURFURACEA (TREEMOSS) EXTRACT • LINALOOL • BHT • CITRONELLOL GERANIOL • BENZYL BENZOATE • BENZYL SALICY- LATE • CINNAMAL • FARNESOL • ISOEUGENOL BENZYL ALCOHOL • CITRAL • CI 191 40 (YELLOW 5) CI 14700 (RED 4) • CI 60730 (EXT. This will be special, aaaand I will buy myself some flowers to enhance the visual ta daaaa moment. Loved the history . Thank youuu Dacob 🧡 Stani.. ps I love Le Lion… very different to Shalimar
Thank you deannstanglenny 🙏🏻🥰💖 super excited for you and the special opening of your vintage bottle. It will smell amazing I am sure 😍😍😍
Thank you Patrice!
Interesting, I just sold my Le Lion. Maybe I should've given it more time?
Patience helps. Sometimes a perfume doesn't match with the period. A bad impression in winter can turn out to a very good surprise in spring. Exactly my experience with Le Lion. And now I'm addicted.
Nowadays people don't train their nose to appreciate complex perfumes. They are influenced by the market and the shampoos scents, the fast bought and quickly forgotten...
This was enjoyable (educational, as well), very visual, to watch. “Inspirational…love story…” 🥰
Thank you dear 🙏🏻😊💖
I got this one on the champs-élysées! I love it! Baught it for the history, the bottle and of course the scent!
You are so right that Shalimar is a definite 'try before you buy.' I bought the EDP about a year ago after reminiscing about youthful times using my best friend's mother's perfume (usually with her permission). I so wish I had sprung for the pure perfume.
The extrait is where its at with Shalimar. Really. So beautifully soft 🥰🥰🥰
New to your Chanel but loving it already!! ❤️ from Miami
I love this channel - I love perfume so much!
Thank you Lynn!
I'm here 🤗
Your reviews are like making a peace of art.
I enjoy watching your videos💗
In future you might want to know that the gold seal is a clip. I think you can open it and re-clip it. I share your love of pure perfumes!
its just a bent piece of metal.. maybe brass... but opening it stresses out the bent part too much and could brake it... and the silk thread is knotted at the bent part of it so even if one were to open it, one would still need to cut the thread in order to open the perfume bottle the first time. Either way, its a nifty little giblet. haha xoxo
Hey D, your hair is looking amazing 😻
Thank you Jacob!
The parfum is softer than the edp but much more elevated and noble.
Beautiful review ♥️
Thank you Robert.
A perfume so old. Sure some of us wore it in our past life.
Thats a great point
Three things that a lady should not do, smoke in public, dance tango, and wear Shalimar...
Haha! Runs out to stock up on cigarettes, tango records and liters of Shalimar! ;)
Who said!? The rebel in me asking. 😉
Rsssssss
Good grief i'm afraid you'll want to march me off to the gallows then as I am guilty of all the sins you list plus, plus, plus. I am convinced the typical 'inlfuencer' would take great pleasure in hunting for me and kill all my pleasure in misbehaving.
Shalimar is like a speakeasy. It was very popular with the flappers
Fabulous fragrance. I adore it 🥰
My batch code is 9B01, yours is 4 years older, I wonder if there is a difference.
The ultimate oriental- I prefer the testers for these because of the spray
They used to sell the spray version in the past.
I have a golden les meteorites perfume holder from the 80’s, without perfume unfortunately… great smell
This was so poetic! You're an excellent story teller! And oh my God listening to you talking so passionately about shalimar is making me fall in love with it even more! I didn't even know that the extrait exists! Buying it in this lifetime is now one of my many mottos 💜
omg i just bought this 😬 i am not at all knowledgeable about perfumes i just kind of bought it because im trying to find a good bergamot perfume i could wear this coming winter nights but i dont smell anything citrus about this. super pleasant on the nose though. like you said very powdery scent. it doesnt linger but it almost comforts me
Did you buy the extract of another concentration?
@@essence-tiallydacob9611 hmm i wonder? my box is different (white with swirly lines and a lilac velvet perfume case) i think mines vintage?
I'm all about that extrait life ❤️ Got super spoiled with Terenzi fragrances and it's hard to go back to weaker formulations. I recently picked up Chanel No.5 eau de parfum and it smells so faint compared to the older formulations from the 80's and 90's.
What is the perfume house called that made Jaques(?) ode to Shalimar but with natural ingredients??
Teone Reinthal and yes you are right, the name is Jacques.
When I bought my bottle ,the lady at the cashier said quite the same thing
Its a wonderful fragrance 🙏🏻💖
Mabye Dior addict?? The original EDP? I really can’t think of a perfume that’s gonna be an icon for years to come and I have over 375 perfumes … I just thought mabye Lou Lou? Hmmmmm good question Dacob!
LouLou is a masterpiece
@@essence-tiallydacob9611 agree I’ve worn it off and on since high school.. also my absolute fave was Chloe Narcissus… oh she was so damn good!! That was my signature .. and she projected like a mother f boss!! ❤️💯💯
Also Chloe original when I believe Karl Lagerfeld owned it .. divine… simply divine ❤️
Wonder what the "Philtre de Parfume" is all about?? Anyone know?
How would compare Shalimar and Arpege ?
Omg in love with these but how compare to le lion Omg that my love
Stay tuned because I will be soon posting a new review of Le Lion ;) xoxo
After tried Le Lion at the Chanel Boutique, it does smell like Shalimar
Le Lion smells like Shalimar en Coromandel got married and had a lovely lovechild ❤️🙏🏻
Bacarrat Crystal bottle is an expensive limited edition
Don’t forget J’adore Extrait De Parfum
I am not so much a fan of j’adore in geneal but I do love the extrait concentration of Dolce Vita 😍
If you want a different theory on the Taj Mahal, watch Praveen Mohan. He shows evidence that the Taj is a much older building, a Hindu temple, and was only taken over by the islamic invaders. It was never built by the Shajahan.
Who do you think is the most poetical Parfumer still alive? Olivier Polge? Le Lion is great but I dont know when I should wear it. To Office or at home😀🤔 Great review!
Wear it when and where you want if it pleases you. You are not supposed to be guided by people's opinion. Even if I respect Dacobs work and a lot of his opinions.
@@rouquindunord8420 👍👍👍i agree with you!
@@stephand.4437 And the most poetical perfumer is Jean-Claude Ellena.

You are a beautiful speaker

Ugh! I can't stand Shalimar. It smells like bug spray to me.
Even the extrait?
I have never tried the extrait. I have smelled the other variations and don't care for it. One day maybe I'l try the the extrait and change my mind. @@essence-tiallydacob9611
@superdacob Please read this for future videos. I’m just trying to help
Just so you know, ambergris would not be listed on the ingredients list because the ingredients list does NOT list the notes of the perfume.

Le Lion to me still has the power I would have liked the new Shalimar to have ❤️ Coromandel same thing: powerful juice! Looking forward to your review of Le Lion!
