That’s not the definition of a tyrant. You can be a dictator but not a tyrant. A tyrant is cruel, malevolent, sadistic, and oppressive. That wasn’t the Emperor.
Yes, he rules with an iron fist and was more than willing to use violence to achieve his ends.
BUT, his motivation was not sadism or cruelty for power’s sake. It was always in pursuit of humanity’s best interests.

He is a military strong-man, who came to supremely executive power on the back of conquest and war. He created a system of Government best described as Supreme Monarchy with a ruling King and a court of bureaucrats, nobles and military commanders.

I have my pretty firm ideas but ultimately I do want him to have some unknowable endgoal because if his endgoal is actually just what he says it is.....he's kind of a boring fuck up for someone so ancient. Like my guy how did you not see these constant obvious bad decisions every step of the way especially with your sons. There are differences of course, but i see similarities too. The last Church is a great story. Very cool video, pretty much every autocrat "knows" they are right. A big differnce between Leto the GEoD and the emperor of mankind is Leto knew he would be betrayed but refused to look to see who would do it and when it would happen, the Emperor was oblivious to the Horus problem and made foolish mistakes that lead inadvertently to his own "destruction" its a fascinating comparison. The Emperor is possibly the best example of the Greek concept of Tyranny in fiction. Most Greek Polis were essentially run by Mafia-like cabals of Elites who cared only for their own family interests and bled the state and it's common people dry for their own benefit.
A Tyrant, on the other hand, would be a single person who rose up to rule absolutely whose power typically stemmed from a popular mandate. This Tyrant, knowing that the only thing that gave him legitimacy and kept his head on his shoulders was massive popular support, would typically do everything he could to butter up the commoners through land redistribution, lowering taxes, and reducing the power of the aristocratic elite who preyed upon them.
A reason why the term 'Tyrant', which most people of the day considered a great thing, has such a negative connotation is that ALL our sources from that era are from rich aristocrats who were very, very mad that their organized crime-style domination of life was being challenged.
Could Tyrants abuse their power? Absolutely, but was it worse than being run by what is essentially an Organized Crime Syndicate? Most peasants in ancient Greece didn't think so. In fact, Tyrannies collapsed when successor tyrants couldn't keep their side of the bargain with the people and they let the Aristocrats ultimately get too much power back.
Short of a system of actual popular representation where common people had a voice and could hold those in power to accountability it was the best system going for a common man. The Emperor's reign certainly had a similar effect on most regular people on Terra.

Hello Amber King! Thank you so much for this insightful video!
I believe that this question is a difficult one and not as clear-cut as some may have us believe.
*Spoilers ahead for Siege of Terra books!*
The End and the Death books, specifically the Malcador chapters, seem to suggest the Emperor adopts aspects that he feels are necessary to achieve his goals. Personally, I don't think the Emperor set out to be a tyrant and had noble intentions for humanity. Because of his visions and the threat of Chaos, he chose the path he thought was the best for humanity. And there is also the fact that without his intervention in the Unification Wars, humanity was going to be extinct: so he did save us. Oh, and I do not buy in the "secret deal on Molech" theory because everyone who brings that up is an unreliable source of information.
The 30k Imperium is no 100% paradise, but ten times better than 40k Imperium which devolved into a ruthless dictatorship without the Emperor and Malcador's guidance or even the presence of Snaguinuis. In the current timeline, Guilliman is trying to make a little better with his reforms. The Emperor is also indeed trapped in his current course as you said Amber King: but that is because he foresaw entrapment on the Throne as a possible future, and "The Outcast Dead" book shows he was willing to make that sacrifice for the sake of humanity and to deny Chaos their total victory. And 10,000 years in constant pain on the Throne is what I see as the Emperor's penance for his many mistakes and sins throughout the millennia.
The End and the Death Volumes II and III solidified to me the nobleness of the Emperor: the fact he gave up the power of the Dark King!!! Is this what a tyrant would do? I don't think so. And the fact he went to face Horus on a playing field that favored the Lupercal and the Chaos Gods, but he still gave it his all. And also the fact that it was the people's worship of the Master of Mankind that helped him defeat Horus! So there are good qualities to the Emperor as a person.
The main issue with a lot of Emperor-related stuff is we never get his POV: which means the accounts we have are people around him who are all inherently biased either for or against him. Which means, there is still many gaps in knowledge to know the truth of matters: but that is why I love 40k so much! Enduring mysteries to keep things interesting!
Anyway, those are my 2 cents. I hope you are doing well!

Tyrants don't really plan on retiring. The Emperor set up the Imperial Senate and planned on disappearing from the front stage after his work was done. If anything, he was acting more like someone given the temporary title of dictator in the Roman Republic.

On a slightly more serious note, has there ever been a tyrant that was not certain of their own righteousness? Ideologues of political, religious or philosophical dogma have all believed they were doing the right thing. This arguably peaked with the political ideologies of the early to mid twentieth century; with greater populations and technological and scientific capabilities, came a greater sense of purpose.
It may well be the case that rationalism is every bit as dangerous as any ideology that came before it. My favourite theme of the early HH books is the juxtaposition of the burgeoning, rational Imperium (liberal autocracy?) against the fascistic, totalitarian theocracy that it became. The Emperor's own self-confidence was perhaps the fuel that spurred that greater than anything else.
In that, The Emperor evokes the CS Lewis quote for me: "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive."

36:00 from what I've read, chaos is linked to humanity, just as humanity is linked to chaos. One cannot exist without the other. And that, is the giant paradox facing mankind and its future in the material realm.

  • @Scufflegrit
    @Scufflegrit 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the implication is that the warp is universal, but localized when interacting with material beings constrained by physical volume and linear time. It’s a matter of perspective. Daemons of another galaxy’s creation are busy corrupting their own, etc.
The extragalactic hive mind shadow in the warp came from somewhere, after all.

The intro song sounds like something, but I can't place it. It also reminds me of "talk amongst yourselves" by Grand National, sorta. The Emperor is like the embodiment of Humanity, both the good and the bad. He also only cared about "humanity", he didn't care about individual humans. The old origin with the Shamen all drinking poison and combining their souls and popping into one baby is the better story, but I kind of like the stuff that says "actually, he's a genetically engineered psychic weapon from the DAoT". Him cheating the Chaos Gods to get the power to create the primarchs is very Promethean. Anyway, he's been eating thousands of souls every day for 10,000 years, so he's probably doing fine. I wonder if he gets the soul energy of believers when they die.

That is the thing I find interesting about the atheistic IoM AND the religious IoM. They both think humanity is the bestest while also absolutely hating the human spirit in so many ways. No being spiritual is allowed vs your spirituality must be within this one box. Either way it just crushes humanity underfoot and absolutely guarantees it won't last.
Both plans are short sighted but I also think its because the Emperor is so old he's actually forgot what being human is even like. Not to mention he's pretty much been a god-being his whole life so he likely never understood why regular humans might seek comfort in things like that or that its inseparable from humanity.

    Yes.
    BUT.
Everything points to the idea that he rushed hastily on basically every possible front, while making several miscalculations in the process. I think the Imperium we see, wich is a degeneration of the one during the Crusade, was his idea of "first step", a highly militarized society to conquer and maintain control on the Galaxy in the shortest time possible, before demilitarizing it.
Cult of personality? Eeeeeh, kind of, lots of talks about secular superiority, but my man E Money walked around as he did, and he DID put his own vision as fulcrum of the work.
Imposing of his will on everyone, no matter the cost? Through excessive, unquantifiable, utter violence? Yep. Though he did saw, and probably tried, other routes before, I'm sure of that.
Didn't help the fact he was against a whole swats of active and future menaces the likes of wich nothing from Old Night could compare (yes, Judgment Day terminators, warp storms and unbound psichers are bad... But four active chaos gods? The necrons bound to wake up, sooner or later? The Tyranids? Yeah, those are bad bad).
That being said, yeah, he was inhuman, and tyrant doesn't begin cut it, but I'm pretty sure his project was the safest bet on the table given what we know.
