Alisha Weir (Matilda) was recently in Abigail earlier this year and was excellent in it. She's also rumored to be playing Dorothy in Wicked part 2 next year!

I’m so glad you reacted to this movie! It’s means so much to me and You’re one of my favorite reactors and so many people slept on this musical film so it’s extra special for me you reacted to this. Loved it! So fun fact, Lashana actually trained her voice to sound that clear which is incredible if you can find anything showcasing her natural voice. She’s more blues/jazz singer than broadway but she sounds fantastic here.
Also yes, I would have LOVED to have seen a Captain Marvel musical. My life would have been complete. If you watch any of the bts scenes for The Woman King, Lashana dances in them. I would have went feral for a full dancing scene in The Marvels with all of them.

The director of the movie was/is the director of the musical on the west end and it shows! This was the first film he's directed which doesn't show.
I adore the stage show (I've seen it at least 4 times) and this is a really solid adaptation. The cuts/changes made make sense and aren't just for the hell of it and the new song added is good and placed at the end so it doesn't break up the established storyline from the stage.
Also at the beginning Matilda's mum said 'quackery' as in the doctor was talking nonsense
And then at the end it's called The Big Friendly School as a nod to one of Roald Dahl's other books The Big Friendly Giant (BFG).
Finally, there are giraffes at the end because one of the old school rules was 'No Giraffes!' It's on one of signs on the grass. I only caught that on a rewatch 😅

This is my favorite movie of all time, so I have to click every time I find a new reactor watching it. I’ve said it a million times before, and I’ll say it again a million times: the end of this musical is a masterpiece. Miss Honey just watched the most talented child she’s met stand up to the most terrifying villain who has made her life a living hell, who she’s done her best to shield the children from but she can’t do enough, and this one child refuses to stand by while something wrong is happening, and does all she can to make things right, to stand up for those who can’t, and then after that, she watches this girl retreat into herself, saying “I can’t do anything about this, I have to go” and she realized exactly how much this girl fears her dad, and knew that if Matilda could get rid of Trunchbull, she could get rid of Mr. Wormwood. And then their faces when they look at each other and come to the realization that they’re both free, and that the person that set them free will love them unconditionally for their entire lives. The whole thing is a traumatized person’s dream. BRB, gonna go watch this movie again and cry

As a thespian, I’ve watched a lot of musicals, and I’ve performed in some. Matilda the musical has to be one of favorites, and I really love it makes the connection between her and Miss Honey better. The Big Friendly School is another reference to Dahl’s other work The BFG. Other Dahl works you check out besides the BFG are James and the Giant Peach and The Witches (1990), and if you were wanting more musicals I highly recommend these: Mamma Mia, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of Music, Sister Act 1-2, Annie (1982 and 1999), Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, Cats (1998), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999), and Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997).

While technically not a musical (it is an adaptation of a stage play, but has a lot of musical elements), MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM (2020) is another one worth checking out. Based on an African American woman who really lived (Ma Rainey), with Viola Davis playing her. This was Chadwick Boseman's final movie too. Both Viola and Chadwick got Oscar-nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor respectively (Chadwick's nomination was posthumous). Hell of a note to end a career on!

I also want to add my voice for you to check out ABIGAIL with Alisha "Matilda" Weir (So much gore it goes straight through disgusting to absurdity) and probably my favourite movie musical of the last 5 years IN THE HEIGHTS (Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius and this made his name before Hamilton).

I don't have a ton of nostalgia for the original Matilda movie and I never read a book. It's more a story I came to appreciate the nuance of as an adult. THIS movie, though? I would die for this movie. If this movie was a person, I would throw myself into oncoming traffic if it meant this movie would be safe. The songs, the acting, the worldbuilding and choreography. I would argue that it's a remake that exceeds the original (even if they're not 1:1 since this is a musical and the original isn't, but I digress) Probably a hot take, but I don't care.

I heard so many good things about this musical before watching it. Maybe the stage version is better, but honestly as a big fan of the book and the original movie I wasn't a big fan of this. There just too many changes in this for me to enjoy it. I especially don't like Matilda suddenly being psychic and magically knowing Miss Honey's backstory. Matilda has always had telekinesis not psychic abilities. Also I love Emma Thompson but I just didn't find her intimidating as Trunchbull the way Pam Ferris scared me. Maybe it's an age thing but even as an adult the og Trunchbull feels more real and scary to me than the cartoony version. Finally, I just didn't like Matilda's characterization in this. Matilda is sweet, innocent, and just trying to live her life in the og book and movie. This one feels to angry and bitter.
