One of my favourite things about the "Nice guys don't kiss like that" moment is that we all expect the answer to be something like "I'm not as nice as you think" or something along those lines. "Oh yes they fucking do" is SO MUCH BETTER!!!
7:05 The guy who knows where the bathrooms are is actually acclaimed writer Salman Rushdie doing a cameo. He was recently in the news when he published a book about an attempt on his life in 2022 that cost him an eye
The one and only retelling of Pride and Prejudice in which their Mr. Darcy character is actually played by a man who's also known for playing Mr. Darcy 😂🥰
Some context on the casting: Starting from 1994, Hugh Grant had an insane run as a huge romcom star with lead roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sense and Sensibility and Notting Hill - all classics you should react to by the way. Even Nine Months (1995) though terrible was a hit at the time. In all those films, he played an endearingly awkward bumbling nervous type, a sensitive man who falls in love usually with a woman out of his league. He's extremely charming in a dorky way. So playing Daniel Cleaver, the villain in Bridget Jones Diary (2001), and who IS charming but in a sleazy way, was contrary to how he'd been typecast at the time. Plus Richard Curtis who wrote this movie also wrote many of Hugh's previous hits so it was kind of a joke between them that he was going against his onscreen softboy persona. This was Hugh transitioning to the more arseholey persona he had in films like About A Boy (a delightful film with Tony Collette, Rachel Weisz and tiny Nicholas Hoult) and a lot of his later romcoms, before his Hughnaissance since 2015-16. Colin Firth had played Mr Darcy in the 1995 BBC miniseries adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, often regarded as the definitive adaptation by book fans, so him playing Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones is a clear reference. And Renee is an American from Texas so her casting was super controversial at the time but she worked very hard at a specific middle class London British accent and pulls it off very near flawlessly!
I love how Colin Firth is just THE Mr. Darcy, playing this Pride and Prejudice remake AND Mr. Darcy in the BBC Pride and Prejudice show. He just nails the eye longing :) Adding my voice to recommend St. Trinians, it's chaotic and fantastic, you'll love it!
I’m sorry Snake?! My Scottish ass could never! 😂 love that you immediately clocked the fact the stories were switched! So another classic with Colin Firth that is a chaotic good time, is St Trinian’s.
"Somewhere in the narrative, Colin Firth is out there..." For more of that, try the 2 St Trinian's movies. Colin is in both, and David Tennant is in the sequel 😉
Great reaction. Renee Zellweger got her first ever Oscar nomination for this, believe it or not. I also would love to hear your thoughts on THE KING’S SPEECH, which won Mr Darcy himself (Colin Firth) the Oscar for Best Actor.
It's simply not possible for me to hear It's Raining Men and not think of this film. It's been my fave scene when I was younger and still is very much up there.
Colin Firth got so much praise from you this whole film and I was just drawing a blank on who he is, thinking I've never seen him, then realizing at the end of the reaction that Colin Firth was that guy in Kingsman: The Secret Service. I read his wiki, and I think I've seen not a one of his other roles. Have I missed out?
He's pretty funny in Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia 2. The King's Speech got him an Oscar. He makes a great flawed-dad-trying-his-best in Nanny McPhee. I don't love his plot line in Love Actually but he makes it work? And of course he is the quintessential Darcy in the BBC Pride & Prejudice mini series. And he has a villain role in Shakespeare in Love (don't see it just for him, though, he's just one small part of a great cast overall)
He also plays Mr. Darcy in the BBC mini series of Pride and Prejudice - he's amazing and that is my favorite version of Pride and Prejudice - the entire cast is wonderful and I would highly recommend it!!
So happy you finally watched this! Speaking of Renee Zellweger starring in an iconic rom com, Down With Love should be on your list. Also stars Ewan Macgregor fresh off Moulin Rouge (incredible musical)!!
Speaking of Moaning Myrtle, if you haven’t seen Wild Child, I highly recommend it. It’s like the British Mean Girls. It is also the last film that Natasha Richardson (who was married to Liam Neeson) starred in, due to her unfortunate and untimely death.
I think of this film more as a document of body shaming rather than another perpetuator of it. I always assumed that we are meant to sympathize with Bridget being a victim of ridiculous body standards (especially back then). Although there is no character who outright says, "Hey! Body shaming is bad!", the film kind of puts it out there for the audience to be the judge. Maybe the book was more overt, but I don't know.
Loved your reaction as always. You should watch society of the snow. It's a great movie and I would love to hear what you have to say about that one. If you do watch it I recommend the original language with subtitles, the acting was amazing
Fun reaction! I’m not the biggest fan of Bridget Jones but it does have some iconic moments. And the ending is great. I’ve been wanting to ask this for awhile, but have you ever watched Practical Magic? If not, you have to watch it! I really feel like you would love it.
I looked up the third movie and I don't think I remember it because I probably never saw it. 2016? That's such a long time after 2004. It seems like it's more liked than the second film by quite a bit. I'm probably gonna throw it on some evening this week.
Please watch more Richard Curtis films: _Four Weddings And A Funeral_ and _Notting Hill_ are bona fide romcom classics, also starring Hugh Grant but with his prior awkward softboi persona.
I, personally, don't think Mark or Daniel are worthy of Bridget (you made a great observation - her friends are enough). But the movie is set up in a way that makes Mark the lesser of two problematic men and therefore the one most veiwers side with. It also doesn't help that I've never understood the Colin Firth love... and that Hugh Grant is an always intriguing rascal 😂 I hope you watch the other 2 Bridget Jones' movies ❤
If you like British rom coms you might like the film man up it’s pretty funny it’s about a 34-year old single woman who is mistaken for a stranger's blind date and finds the perfect man for her in a 40-year old divorcé.
I have never seen this movie. I know the gist of it and pretty much decided my second hand embarrassment probably couldnt take it. Congratulations and thank you for being able to endure what I could not.
Thanks for the snake closure, Jess. I was worried you were just going to drop that in there. Renee Zellweger is always a delight. It's sad she kinda got swallowed up by Hollywood's terrible age and beauty standards for women. Fun video, Jess! What are your thoughts on TTPD?
Hugh Grant gets stupidly funny after Bridget dumps him. I wasn't that into the love story but I enjoyed the ridiculous situations. Didn't respect that part where the imprisoned women act like selling you into sex slavery is the only way a man could be a bad partner though.
PLEASE REACT TO "SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON"! It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken. I cry every time i watch it! It's a INCREDIBLE film, and the songs are so cool! But it's not a musical and the animals can't talk. 😭💔🔥
*QUESTION FOR BRITS:* How was Renee Zellweger's accent in _Bridget Jones's Diary?_ Like 99.9% of straight guys, I watched it on a date. With a girl. Didn't really think much of it at the time. But I just re-watched it, and it's actually a surprisingly decent movie. At the time, I couldn't tell a good British accent from a bad one, but living in Holland 2003-2008 I watched a lot of BBC. And although I sometimes find British accents sounding believable that turn out to be way off ... Zellweger sounds pretty good. Or am I completely wrong again. And it's terrible to a Brit.
I think it was Love Actually that it seemed like every single woman had a line about how she was getting fat. It was just so abusive. I assume its a British cultural thing; Europeans also obsess over fatness.
I rented this at Blockbuster because I thought Renee Zellweger was pretty. I thought it was an alright movie but I really didn't have much reasons to like the sequel. It seems like a pretty bad movie to me, and I can't remember anything about the third movie. Surprise though, google tells me there's a 4th film coming out next year. Maybe that can redeem the series. I would ask you to at least consider not bringing the next two films to youtube, and maybe see Renee's film New in Town instead. Also Jerry Maguire if you wanna make it a two for two swap. Jess I miss the MCU content, but it's alright about it I guess. You know what though? You should just go straight for X-Men 97. It's a straight up superhero soap opera and it's been wild. It's highly praised, the best thing Marvel has done, and we hear that sometimes, but this one is lots of fun. It's still holding a 98% rating and the final episode of ten is next week. It stayed at 100% for a couple of days.
Fun fact: Bridget’s Jones’ Diary is a retelling of Pride and Predjudice
"You settled for rock bottom, the rest of us don't have to" is THE 👏 ACCURATE 👏 RESPONSE 👏. 😂
Shirley Henderson being typecast as a bathroom-crier. Colin Firth being typecast as Mr. Darcy. It's all very specific!
'She's not flirting with the boss, she's flirting with *disaster* ' is a great line.
One of my favourite things about the "Nice guys don't kiss like that" moment is that we all expect the answer to be something like "I'm not as nice as you think" or something along those lines. "Oh yes they fucking do" is SO MUCH BETTER!!!
How a chaotic Renée Zellweger and a stiff Colin Firth can have this much chemistry is beyond me, but it absolutely works.
7:05 The guy who knows where the bathrooms are is actually acclaimed writer Salman Rushdie doing a cameo. He was recently in the news when he published a book about an attempt on his life in 2022 that cost him an eye
"Ok, that's just a guy who knows where the bathrooms are." killed me. Like girl, that's Salman fucking Rushie 😂
Seriously, if you haven't heard of this man, then just look up his Wikipedia entry. It's pretty insane.
Jeffrey Archer gets a cameo as well, but (thankfully) we don't hold him in as high a regard!
The one and only retelling of Pride and Prejudice in which their Mr. Darcy character is actually played by a man who's also known for playing Mr. Darcy 😂🥰
They were so inspired for casting him for this.
In the books Bridget is obsessed with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. So the casting was pretty hysterical for those of us who read the books.
Some context on the casting: Starting from 1994, Hugh Grant had an insane run as a huge romcom star with lead roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sense and Sensibility and Notting Hill - all classics you should react to by the way. Salman Rushdie is a very real and very famous author, that was a cameo, he's not just the guy who knows where the loos are haha
I was about to write this… good god
I’m sorry Snake?! My Scottish ass could never! 😂 love that you immediately clocked the fact the stories were switched! So another classic with Colin Firth that is a chaotic good time, is St Trinian’s.
I love the hat. No need to justify it. A proper hat requires no explanation.
The hat is CUTE!
Embrace your Firefly! A girl walks down the street in a hat like that, people know she's not afraid of anything.
"Somewhere in the narrative, Colin Firth is out there..."
For more of that, try the 2 St Trinian's movies. Colin is in both, and David Tennant is in the sequel 😉
Great reaction. Renee Zellweger got her first ever Oscar nomination for this, believe it or not.

It's simply not possible for me to hear It's Raining Men and not think of this film.
It's been my fave scene when I was younger and still is very much up there.
The fact that Natasha was Miss Honey from Matilda still blows my mind. She definitely didn't fall into the type cast trap.
Yes
Check out his Oscar-winning performance in THE KING'S SPEECH (2010).
To further the Love Actually connection, Emma Thompson plays the doctor in the third movie.
So happy you finally watched this! Speaking of Renee Zellweger starring in an iconic rom com, Down With Love should be on your list. Also stars Ewan Macgregor fresh off Moulin Rouge (incredible musical)!!
Down with Love is such a fun movie, easily one of my favorite 2000s rom coms.
After growing up with the Bridget Jones movies in middle school (2010), college me was HYPED for the third’s release 😄
A lot of the best British romcom movies have been written and produced by Richard Curtis. Like he did this one, Love actually and my fave About time.
Speaking of Moaning Myrtle, if you haven’t seen Wild Child, I highly recommend it. It’s like the British Mean Girls.
It is also the last film that Natasha Richardson (who was married to Liam Neeson) starred in, due to her unfortunate and untimely death.
I watch this movie at least once a year. (granted it's part of my mom's and my christmas time movies, but still)
A charming movie that holds up decently minus the 2000's insane normalisation of constant body shaming.
@@Johnny_Socko a fair assessment
You'll love the film Notting Hill i feel ❤
"she's not flirting with her boss, she's flirting with disaster" 🤣
8:13 pink comtact lenses broke me 😂 is it a refrence I don't know or original cause its so brilliant
Loved this. I hope you also do the sequels.
Your judgement of character was off the charts! 🥳🥳👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I watched this movie as a teen and fell for all of Daniel’s crap. 😣😔
Loved your reaction as always. You should watch society of the snow. It's a great movie and I would love to hear what you have to say about that one. If you do watch it I recommend the original language with subtitles, the acting was amazing
I, too, know all of the words to the hat song 🤭
Fun reaction! I’m not the biggest fan of Bridget Jones but it does have some iconic moments. And the ending is great.
I’ve been wanting to ask this for awhile, but have you ever watched Practical Magic? If not, you have to watch it! I really feel like you would love it.
Great suggestion! But Jess _has_ to have seen that one, right? If not, then what are we doing wrong?!
@@Johnny_Socko I also thought “surely she’s seen it!” But I’m hoping she hasn’t because I want to see her reaction!
Yeah Colin Firth has had great practice at being a man named Mr Darcy quietly falling in love with an unconventional woman of their time
I looked up the third movie and I don't think I remember it because I probably never saw it. 2016? That's such a long time after 2004. It seems like it's more liked than the second film by quite a bit. I'm probably gonna throw it on some evening this week.
Finally found your channel again!! It took me almost an hour, made sure to subscribe this time
I know this is random but the teaser for heartstopper is out its so cute
Also the release date is October 3!!!!!!!
Did you photograph the snake? Are we getting a post about it? 😂 Also what the hell is Gaius Baltar doing in this movie? That took me out.🤣
Love love love the American reaction to ‘you could lose your job girly’ nope not here, he’s losing his… don’t worry 😂
Колин Фёрт просто великолепен. Я смотрела лишь несколько фильмов с ним. Он везде хорошо играет. Но мистер Дарси есть мистер Дарси. Это нечто особенное
Have an incredible day Jess 😊

Hey! Been awhile since I commented but hope you’ve been doing great and if you’ve watched already, enjoying the new season of Doctor Who 🤩🙌🏼
I have never seen this movie. I know the gist of it and pretty much decided my second hand embarrassment probably couldnt take it. Congratulations and thank you for being able to endure what I could not.
Not you 'this guy"-ing Salman Rushdie LMAO
Hi, can you watch freak show 2017? Its a cute movie
The Marvels reaction would be nice to see!!! First Female team up movie for MCU Iman Vellani is a gem!
Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Who else heard “steak” instead of “snake” and was very confused 😂
I wish I looked like Kiera Knightly 😭
first movie i ever seen hugh grant in was as a oompa loompa
Hugh Grant gets stupidly funny after Bridget dumps him. I wasn't that into the love story but I enjoyed the ridiculous situations. Didn't respect that part where the imprisoned women act like selling you into sex slavery is the only way a man could be a bad partner though.
Colin Firth roaming free....
I'm gonna leave you with that.

Salman Rushdie is a real author.
Colin gets cheated on again 😑
X-MEN '97...
This movie was really bad for body issues, and caused a lot of people to develop them when they were growing up
I think it was Love Actually that it seemed like every single woman had a line about how she was getting fat. It was just so abusive. I assume its a British cultural thing; Europeans also obsess over fatness.
