Mortal Kombat 4 on the N64 was the closets thing to the arcade version before the Dreamcast Gold version came out. MAME was also out of the question back then since the game took a long time to get it emulated.
Love MK Gold, except that the game is so much darker in color than any other version. I still play it occasionally for the extra characters, but N64, with no loading times, is the supreme version. After watching this, the PS version is also super dark. What's up with that? N64 looks so much better. 🍻
Setting aside the PS1's loading times... -PS1 port looked like it used darker color shading for rendering the stages, while N64 amped up the brightness. A subtle detail I noticed in the Wind World stage was that the rain coming down actually made contact with the ground for the PS1 port, something lacking on N64. -N64 intro sequence and endings were rendered in real-time (done for the arcade version), while PS1 rendered them in a CG video clip. Pretty close ports, though would probably give the slight nod to the N64 for no load times.
almost the same, n64 win on loading, and in some fighters the smoothing helps, the endings and the extras the PS1 version. I played this game a lot, I played at a high level with other people who were also enthusiasts.
@@Clay3613 I thought about this too, but at the time it was what it was. PSX made a standard with its more universal controller, but if you were a 64 user: it was the norm. Consider that the superior form of this game was on Dreamcast, who also had a slightly less strange but still quirky controller with the world's hardest d-pad and finger cutting triggers!
The game looks mostly the same, except for n64 looking a bit less jaggy. PS1 had the advantage of CD space hence all the FMVs, but i would take the N64 instant loading times any time.
1. I would prefer the PS1 control scheme over the N64's. 2. The N64's colors looked a lot brighter. Also the stage where the Scorpion and Shinnok fights took place had better looking background fire. The PS1 versions fire looked pixelated. 3. Those ending cutscenes were hilarious. 13:48 Sub Zero is so angry in the N64 version he's yelling at the wall. 13:56 Quan Chi is moving arms around erratically to prove his point in the N64 version. 14:08 YEEEEARRRRRH!!! in the Ps1 version.
I played the hell out of the Ps1 version. It was a miracle, since it had everything, crisp 3d gfx, awesome sound fx and all the coll Cgi's. A friend of mine had the N64 one and althought it felt stabler it was too bright and blurry, the lack of cutscenes was kinda sad, but I believe it's the best fighter in the console.
Yeah I enjoyed MK4 for years and randomly pull out the n64 to play with some friends I grew up with. The sound effects and voice acting were top notch.
I absolutely love this game. I regret not owning the N64 version back in the day, despite having both systems. But I scored the PS1 version back in the day for super cheap, so that was the version I played until later getting Gold on Dreamcast. Also, I prefer N64 cutscenes as opposed to the other systems' FMVs, since the cutscenes more resemble the arcade version.
Quem no PS1 tinha Bloody Roar, Tekken, Bushido Blade, Dead or Alive, Street Fighter Ex, Rival School...
I find it interesting seeing some games ported to both ps1 have different varying levels of quality, with some having better ports on the ps1, and some on the n64, I would say the n64’s smoother rendering and faster load times make the n64 version much better
Since im a gamer, not FMV fanatic, I prefere the N64 version. No loading times, better textures, and the N64 controller's D-Pad is really smooth for fighting games.
Both d pads were/are awful for fighting games but the N64 one was worse imo, has a really 'dead' feel to it. The Saturn had the only decent stock pad for fighters in this gen
The N64 version doesn't have better textures than the PSX version, the N64 version has lower resolution textures (just look the ground at 6:45) the difference is that N64 uses a linear filter that softens the pixels and gives it the appearance of look better (but blurry)
I spent middle & high school on the PlayStation version, but got to experience the Nintendo 64 version eventually when I got my own copy (& console) 10 years ago. I generally like the PlayStation version better for its full motion videos & being able to collect all the endings, but I will say that Nintendo 64 has the advantage when it comes to load times & being able to do Goro vs Goro matches (Goro is replaced by Shinnok in the PlayStation version, so you fight him twice). Also, I feel like the music choices for the main menu, title screen & even tournament mode screens were better in the PlayStation version, but that's just my opinion.
Kinda shocked at how similar they both look given each system's strengths and weaknesses. I would have expected the textures in N64 to look much worse. I also would have thought that the 3D models and animations would look smoother on the N64 given its ability to render more polygons. I also think they could have rendered the intro on the N64 a lot closer to the FMV/arcade. But as usual, when you port the same game for multiple systems, a lot of times they go for what will get the game out quicker than what will play to each system's strengths.
N64 doesn't render more polygons, on the contrary, but it has an advantage it supports main models with a higher average of polygons than the ps1 maybe due the cpu but in stages they are less since the N64 makes bigger polygons, besides the frame rate is almost always below the fixed 30fps, so multiplying the polygons by the fps the result in drawn polygons will be lower than the PS1.
The N64 is closer to the arcade than the PSX version and preferred by tournament guys out of all the home ports of this game, PSX it's alright but freezes, has annoying load times and doesn't look as good graphically as N64 (even with Nintendo's limitations on 3rd party) the PSX looks more pixelated and choppy at times. Both have the mo cap video endings, just different tech were uses on PSX where the N64 used the same as arcade.
They look similar tbh, but the PS1 had darker contrast which I prefer. Long wait times though. And the cut scenes were waaaay better on PS1 as well....
Played the PS1 version back when it was new, but now I prefer the N64 version. It's closer to the arcade with no load times and smoother textures. Also, lighting in the stages is a tad better. The FMVs on ps1 aren't that much of an improvement really. They are still as cheesy and embarassing as anywhere else. Actually, the hilariously bad in-engine ones on the n64 are even more funny if that's your cup of tea :) The n64 controller isn't bad at all for this game. You just have to reconfigure the default layout. The C buttons layout is a good substitute for ps1 X, O and so on. So use that for attacks. Set R for block and L for run and you are good to go.
@EL TROOPER TEKKEN the cartridge have played a major role in terms of no loading times. even if the the ps1 was the more powerful it probably at the time still gonna have loading times, data must be read from the CD in order to render everything as it should, and I heard the CD Rom on the ps1 is a bit slow in the reading department.
I would go with N64. If you played the game a lot those load times on PS1 are atrocious when you can play with barely any on N64. Graphics wise they are very similar, PS1 looks a bit sharper and more pixelated and jaggy, while the N64 looks softer but less jaggy and pixilated. Sound is obviously better on PS1 but N64 doesn't sound bad enough to bother me, and the FMV on PS1 is nice, but I doubt your gonna watch them much after once or twice.
Both have pros and cons. N64 had better character models, better rendered backgrounds, instant load speed, and the in game engine cutscenes are funnier and I prefer them silly. While the PS1 color pallet is darker, it doesn’t look washed out like the n64 does. The n64 seemed too bright but that can be fixed in settings for the tv. The only reason I can see to get the ps1 version is the FMVs and the controller might feel better to use. It’s close but N64 wins on visual presentation at least
As an MK fan since MK 1 and someone whos played MK games competitively i can safely say the N64 is better overall. The PSX version freezes at times and has happened during fatalities its annoying, glitches at times and the N64 looks better since the game is 3D and loads way faster. No load times on n64 was just like the arcade since they used real time tech. PSX used their pre-rendered CGI tech. The one thing PSX does better was the arcade intro promo ad and the slight difference with the Raiden intro. But thats not a big deal and has no relevance to the gamplay. And the FMVs look slightly better on PSX but both have them so not a big deal as the 64 was more arcade accurate technically. Overall I'd pick the 64 version over the psx. But this game is underrated imo.
I think the N64 overall looks better. Although textures may be ever so slightly low res, the bilinear shading and no warping does a lot to make it look better than the PS1 not as much as I remember it at the time, but still looks better IMO. I think for the time you also have to look at your options. Why would you choose MK4 on PS1, you have Soul Edge, Tekken, Tobal No.1 and 2, first two Tohshinden games, the CPS2 arcade games aren’t as bad as Saturn fanboys like to tell you. On N64 this was pretty much top of the heap if you wanted a fighting game.
The tohsinden games were obsolete by the time this came out and they honestly were to slow paced and movement was awful. Tobal was cool earlier on but Ehrgeiz was better even though it's similiar. Soul edge aged gracefully throughout it's span. Great pace, graphics solid movement and controls, solid replay value too. Mk4 was still a solid pickup for more hectic bloody fast paced combat just like you said though there was more options for better or for worse.
@@angrymobsters1599 I think Toshinden gets a bad wrap. I played the sequel recently, and it’s a fun little game. I mean it has blocky graphics that aged as well as any other game of the era… poorly, but personally I prefer it to Tekken and Tekken 2 that is basically more boring characters fighting on a mode 7 plain. Tekken is also a fun game, but it’s also different. At the time it was one of the first 3D fighters not trying to be realistic and had fireballs in it. I think people are exaggerating the narrative of it being early and not very good.
@@sloppynyuszi I agree with you that this was on top the heap for fighting games on N64. I didn't own a N64 (until much much later) as I was a fighting game fanatic and PS1 had the best variety of games overall, especially fighting games - for the generation at least. I remember when the Saturn was released, before the PlayStation but we got the PlayStation because it still had better titles and it looked and played way better and more fighting games. People that love Saturns are fanboys and it's hilarious how much they go on about how much better was than PlayStation. But I don't live in Japan or didn't import from there so Saturn was out of the question - because Japan had the cream of the crop for Saturns software and hardware. What turned me off about Saturn was the colour palette always looked less than the PlayStation and N64, like heaps of colours were missing. The hardware couldn't do transparent textures either, most arcades of the time couldn't either but the vast colour palette of arcade hardware made up for it.
The 64 had better character models and no loading. It was a tad brighter but that's an easy fix depending on your preference. The only thing the PS had were the rendered videos, but the 64 was closer to the arcade by using the in game models. 64 for the win here. But the Dreamcast takes the win overall with much better character models than both the PS and 64 with the FMV cut scenes and added content.
@@angrymobsters1599 And yet the N64 version was still able to preserve and output many of the same sound effects and music as the arcade original in spite of that
it looks so ugly and jaggy on PS1 the charcarcter models always looked to skinny to me too, the only thing that kept me koming back as a kid was the FMV but even now in retrospect those have aged so badley. Ill take the N64 version anyday it feels and plays so much closer to the arcade.
This is my second favorite MK, after MK2. Today's "reviewers", who didn't live MK4 era, use to rate it very poorly, compared to the rest of the games. But it was a success at the arcades, because it was so fast and modern for that time, despiting the fact that 3D graphics were at a very early stage. I still can perform "MAXIMUM DAMAGE" combos with Sob-Zero and Scorpion, btw... Ah, And I like both versions, but look for Zeus hardware MK4 in MAME.
It even looks better than the games that came after it artistically. The ps2 era of MK had a good look but mk 9 and up has a bland look and feel to them. This also feels the tightest cause it legits feels like MK 3 but it 3d
Correct. The arcade version used the in-game character models for the ending sequences, just like the N64 version. The PS1, Dreamcast (and I think the PC) versions had the fully rendered CG endings.
If only Midway used as much memory on MK Trilogy on the N64 as they did on this at least all the sound effects would've been arcade perfect & they would've had Goro, Kintaro & the MK2 versions of fighters in there too. The music could've been much improved too
There are some differences, the N64 version has the stages looking brighter & are missing the FMV from the PS1 counterpart. Both have great music & most of the sound effects. But I did notice the PS1 having a bit more detail in certain areas. Like on the stage that rains, you could see the droplets 💧 hit & splash on the ground.
Does the PS1 version run at 60fps? It looks like it from the video, but it would be great if anyone can confirm. Hoping to buy a copy for my backwards compatible PS3.
It might do, or close enough 60fps. I had it on PS1 back in the day. The graphics were okay, good enough, got the job done. But I kept playing it as I was more surprised at how fun it is to play and the frame pacing is quite well done, at least it doesn't load mid gameplay. Only before fights and after when a fatality occurs.
in terms of gameplay they are the same, and visual it's a little better on n64 (smoother with no jaggies) n64 has no loadings , but the ps1 has the movies (still mk4 was not a really good in this area and movies where horrible) but still very similar products overall. i preffer the n64 because i care little for fmv (in this game) and i like the "no loadings" option better.
It's close in-game. N64 has less pixelation. PS1's stages are darker (I don't really mind... you could say it does lend to the MK atmosphere). PS1's CGI endings, also found in the PC version, look better than the N64's.
First this game (on PS1) really had no chance: Tekken 3 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 were already released in arcades and to every region and even today are still 2 of the greatest fighting games of all time. Coming from UMK3 this along with Mythologies Sub Zero left MK fans with a lot to be disappointed about. MK4 was pretty much a step down from UMK3 in every gameplay aspect and we lost a lot of fan favorite characters. At least it avoided Thrill Kill (which I believe may have hurt or done this game and maybe MK in general in) as it’s gameplay works just as well and it was hella more gorey than this; again this came came out AFTER 2 of the greatest fighting games of all time, and hit a real low point in the series gameplay wise from this Mythologies and especially Special Forces. Maybe they just got lucky Thrill Kill got unreleased…?
I don't remember anyone thinking SFA3 was a great fighting game. What I remember was it being criticized for being a meter happy unbalanced mess with lousy music and odd new characters. The fighting game crowd where I lived hated it and preferred SFA2. I didn't like it at first apart from playing Cody and Guy but the more I learned the game the more I grew to like it. Thrill Kill was never gonna be a threat to MK. Play the Wu-Tang game. It's fun, but it's not nearly as good as MK4 or even Bloody Roar. Once the violence and 90s shock value stuff was removed it was an above average console fighter.
N64 polygon models are more stable and you don't get the weird jagged-ness of the edges like you do in most PS1 games, because N64 had built-in hardware support for things like that, but otherwise they look the same. Actually, I will say I like the colors on the PS1 version a little better.
N64 wins but like the N64 port impressed with the port considering the hardware Zeus it's coming from. With that said the N64 image overall is clean, less texture warping, and popin on the floor. N64 characters seem just a bit bigger, probably has a few more polys in the areas that need it.
I think MK4, in general, sucks. It's one of those games that moved too early into the 3D side of things. It lost all of the gritty realistic side that made it famous. It looks like fighting puppets with ketchup stains. The first MK after this that I think was worthy to be played and seen again is Mortal Kombat X (yes, even MK9 for PS3 looks kinda "toys fighting" to me). They should have just made it in 2D again but with much more care for the fatalities animations (like removing all of those extra bones and some more realistic physics on the leftover bodies...). Anyways, thanks VC DECIDE.
Mortal Kombat 4 was released in 1997 and the ports came out in 1998, That was in no way "early",. not when other companies had already or were already embracing 3D and trying to get their games into the next dimension, including Street Fighter. Mortal Kombat was never "gritty, realistic"

PSX looks like SHL+ and I own both. I just don't look at them, side by side. The color scheme is better on the N64 and fatality looked better. I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW SOME SONY VIRGIN WILL GET MAD, HEARING THE TRUTH AND THEN THEY'LL TELL THEIR MOMMY TO SET ME STRAIGHT (sigh) Hopefully Mommy is hot :)
Same developer, pretty much the same game. Though the N64 version looks better, you have to put up with that horrible controller, not to mention the arcade original's awful in-game cutscenes(used for the opening and endings). What I think we all need to giver props to, no matter your preferred version, is the fact that Eurocom has both versions running at a silky-smooth 60fps. I loved the PSX version until the DC version hit(MK Gold), but if you can put with the N64 controller, it's not a bad way to go either...
@@Freshbrood Right then, so you haven't played it....or even the PSX version for that matter, it seems First, it doesn't have "far more movie scenes". All of the endings and the opening were replaced with FMV renditions of the original arcade scenes, which were all rendered in-game, just like the N64 version. Noob Saibot was also never playable from the start in the PSX version; he requires a code to play as, too.

I find it interesting seeing some games ported to both ps1 have different varying levels of quality, with some having better ports on the ps1, and some on the n64, I would say the n64’s smoother rendering and faster load times make the n64 version much better
More important than any graphical differences is the lack of loading times for the N64 version
The n64 version was solid even without the music and fmv but the ps1 had subtle touches like the selection screen zooming in. I loved both versions.
I see different goro icons never noticed that.
Lui Kang has got the superior bicycle kick on 64. HYBYAYUYHUYHSUSUWAHIYASEEYA!!!
Since im a gamer, not FMV fanatic, I prefere the N64 version. No loading times, better textures, and the N64 controller's D-Pad is really smooth for fighting games.
You are wrong about "smooth" N64 d pad. It spoils quickly in fighting games.
Both d pads were/are awful for fighting games but the N64 one was worse imo, has a really 'dead' feel to it. The Saturn had the only decent stock pad for fighters in this gen
@@jaramilloedwin27 it was still a great controller for fighting games. Would have been perfect if capcom release their games on the n64
The N64 version doesn't have better textures than the PSX version, the N64 version has lower resolution textures (just look the ground at 6:45) the difference is that N64 uses a linear filter that softens the pixels and gives it the appearance of look better (but blurry)
@@kubratodason719 thanks for your comment.
Real time rendered cut scenes are the way to go, N64 was ahead of it's time, I know it looks worse, but it's the way it should be done.
simples assim.
Both version are pretty good, but I think I would choose the N64 version a bit more because of no load times & the even more hilarious cutscenes. :D
Totally agree.
I stand corrected.
@Delinquent Road Runner it can run double the account of polygons ps1 can run
The N64 is closer to the arcade than the PSX version and preferred by tournament guys out of all the home ports of this game, PSX it's alright but freezes, has annoying load times and doesn't look as good graphically as N64 (even with Nintendo's limitations on 3rd party) the PSX looks more pixelated and choppy at times. Both have the mo cap video endings, just different tech were uses on PSX where the N64 used the same as arcade.
Cadê minha galera do DreamCast. Eu amo vocês
I had the N64 version
FMV is nice on the PS One, I had the N64 version and by far played the hell out of it! My nod is the N64 as it was close to arcade
Ive played both versions but i still prefer the N64, faster and better control, for me N64 is much, much better.
Goros pic looks cooler on the n64 version
Cara, valorizo demais seu trabalho.

Opa, muito obrigado
They look similar tbh, but the PS1 had darker contrast which I prefer. Long wait times though. And the cut scenes were waaaay better on PS1 as well....
Ehhh, I have to go with the PS1 version, only because the FMV and sound are what made the PS1 special.
Actually, the hilariously bad in-engine ones on the n64 are even more funny if that's your cup of tea :)
The n64 controller isn't bad at all for this game. You just have to reconfigure the default layout. The C buttons layout is a good substitute for ps1 X, O and so on. So use that for attacks. Set R for block and L for run and you are good to go.
I also remember the loadings in the PS1 version render it unplayable at all. Those loadings are long and pop up very frequently.
@EL TROOPER TEKKEN
the cartridge have played a major role in terms of no loading times.
even if the the ps1 was the more powerful it probably at the time still gonna have loading times, data must be read from the CD in order to render everything as it should, and I heard the CD Rom on the ps1 is a bit slow in the reading department.
Pc, Arcade e Dreamcast.
Can't forget the audio and controls. Ps1 controls were better and the ps1 actually had a dedicated sound chip.
Dreamcast game MK Gold has worse lighting effects, fireballs dont react on any chars, N64 and PS1 did.
@@angrymobsters1599 And yet the N64 version was still able to preserve and output many of the same sound effects and music as the arcade original in spite of that

Who needs loading screens in fighting games? You know damn well I don't.
it looks so ugly and jaggy on PS1 the charcarcter models always looked to skinny to me too, the only thing that kept me koming back as a kid was the FMV but even now in retrospect those have aged so badley.
The CG scenes were exclusive (at the time) to PS1 port and were not in the arcade,no?
Correct. The arcade version used the in-game character models for the ending sequences, just like the N64 version. The PS1, Dreamcast (and I think the PC) versions had the fully rendered CG endings.
Broo i want this Game remaster with online mode
mortal kombat gold on dreamcast blows these 2 version out of the water
not, dreamcast version fireballs lighting dont react on any char as ps1, n64 and arcade did.
N64 all day long any day. I can do a full playthru on 64 before ps1 loads 2nd stage
Great video, would love to see how MK Gold on the Dreamcast compares as well.
I will always say if more developers put more fighting games on the N64 it would have done even better than it did..

If only Midway used as much memory on MK Trilogy on the N64 as they did on this at least all the sound effects would've been arcade perfect & they would've had Goro, Kintaro & the MK2 versions of fighters in there too. The music could've been much improved too
Was a very early release in the N64’s life so I’m not surprised they got better later with MK4
Only before fights and after when a fatality occurs.

in terms of gameplay they are the same, and visual it's a little better on n64 (smoother with no jaggies) n64 has no loadings , but the ps1 has the movies (still mk4 was not a really good in this area and movies where horrible)
but still very similar products overall.
i preffer the n64 because i care little for fmv (in this game) and i like the "no loadings" option better.
Will you compare the Dreamcast version to these?
N64 polygon models are more stable and you don't get the weird jagged-ness of the edges like you do in most PS1 games, because N64 had built-in hardware support for things like that, but otherwise they look the same. Actually, I will say I like the colors on the PS1 version a little better.
I prefer PS1 colors and cutscenes but N64 has no load times and is still pretty close.
N64 wins but like the N64 port impressed with the port considering the hardware Zeus it's coming from. With that said the N64 image overall is clean, less texture warping, and popin on the floor. N64 characters seem just a bit bigger, probably has a few more polys in the areas that need it.
This game ALWAYS reminds me that "WarGods" looked waaaay better 😸👍👍
You should compare the Sega Saturn version as well

Same developer, pretty much the same game. Though the N64 version looks better, you have to put up with that horrible controller, not to mention the arcade original's awful in-game cutscenes(used for the opening and endings). What I think we all need to giver props to, no matter your preferred version, is the fact that Eurocom has both versions running at a silky-smooth 60fps. I loved the PSX version until the DC version hit(MK Gold), but if you can put with the N64 controller, it's not a bad way to go either...
