I am 60 years old and have been playing rhythm guitar since I started learning at about 12 or so. I never learned scales, just chords. I learned more in the last 15 minutes of this lesson than I have in years. Not just the A pentatonic scale but what it does in relation to a song. I guess I never got that far in lessons before. And that is ashamed. All those wasted years of not having this knowledge. I just bought a Taylor and I am excited about learning again....at 60! Can you believe it?! You are a great teacher...I look forward to exploring all your videos. Thank you for being here.
I was in the same situation as you were, except when I decided to take the "rank" out of "rank amateur" to describe my playing, I did it when I turned 70. I took online lessons and in-person lessons and learned a lot about how songs are constructed. I learned all five positions of the pentatonic scale, which was an eye opener for me. Finally I knew which notes to play! I played enough every day that I began to develop some flexibility with my fingers that I didn't have before. I learned new chords and practiced them until I didn't have to struggle to play them. Now I'm 79 and playing at open mic nights and enjoying myself immensely. I am even singing, something I always avoided in public. I've made friends with other musicians and have been asked to join them on stage to do a song together. Keep up the good work, brother.
I am a old barnyard player. Taught myself with books in navy out at sea and with friends. EXTREMELY WELL DONE VIDEO and grateful to see. Long may you run !!
Swifty: This is an incomparable lesson. I'm 70, tried guitar in fits and starts for years. I get bored easily and hate to practice. This is different by miles. The pentatonic lesson is important, but the tune, itself, is so well presented that I can follow it and I've made much progress. Mahalo nui loa.
Just wow! I've been playing/teaching guitar for decades, watched countless videos and tutorials. You my friend are an excellent teacher. You are thorough and you broke down the intro masterfully. Between you playing it slowly and methodically and your breakdown left nothing out! Kudos to you for investing in becoming a master TH-cam teacher and creator!!!!
Man... I have been playin guitarsince I was about 10.. 68 now! Never consistant though. You tube has taught me alot, but many tutorials seem to be done by novices who just learned a song. (VERY obvious). YOU, have an excellent teaching method. Patience, timing, knowledgele AND noiticeable experience. Will be looking to you for tips, etc., from now on! Stay out there for we who appreciate you
Just went through your Amie tutorial. I have to say this was the BEST online guitar lesson I have ever experienced! Really. You are so clear on what you are showing and play everything at a speed anyone can learn from. I'd love to see hundreds more of these from you. I'd pay for lessons like this. Thanks for the time and effort you put into it. There's plenty more music in the world because of you! Cheers.
5:34 for the beginning of the chord/solo melody instruction. Awesome that you included the scale forms in the beginning. One of my students found this and showed it to me. Thanks for such a great video!
So he ends the lesson, and plays in about 26 seconds what might take me 260 hours to learn, and I'm giving me the benefit of the doubt. I don't know if I should damn Craig Lee Fuller, or bless him for composing what seemed so simple and beautiful, when in reality it's a very, very complex mastery of composition. Well, at least I should be able to sing it at karaoke. This song is my #1 goal song to learn on the guitar. Anyone reading this, say a prayer for me. I'm gonna need it.
Thank you so much for this! I've been "playing" guitar for years (I learned a bunch of chords and a few simple progressions, but mostly followed tabs). But I never really committed to learning how to play by building a foundation. I knew that learning scales for instance would be a substantial part. But I never did it. I found your page a few days after I picked up and started playing a concert ukulele. (Thank you for your rendition of "Sometimes". It's wonderful!) Since then I decided I'll find a way to start taking guitar and ukulele lessons. But hadn't determined where and with whom. But it's brought an excitement for my instruments that I haven't had in a long time. So, looking around your video list this am, I clicked on this video to see what you did to play the intro to Amie and behold...you demonstrated and taught me those scales. And I've been practicing for the past 30 minutes and got them! (Still need work to be clean and smooth and not looking of course.) You've earned yourself another Patreon supporter! 🙏
I have viewed hundreds of guitar lessons on TH-cam, and learned dozens of songs. Your lesson here is by far the best I've seen. Very easy to follow, and just the right amount of starts, stops, and repeats. The mini pentatonic lesson was helpful also. Keep up the great work Rob, and please keep sharing.
Really enjoy the way in which you go about a lesson. Very holistic, and you give a background for beginners/intermediates to anchor on so that they actually understand why the song is structured the way it is. Thumbs up all around.
I have been playing guitar for years and always wanted to learn how to play the lead in Amie, your great lesson finally hit a chord with my fingers, and I learned it, thank you.
I am known as the "chord king" on guitar but SUCK at soloing. I found you here and love your teaching style. You help everything make sense and I love the connectivity with theory too. Thank you.
Thank you so much for breaking this down. You play it so well. After 30 years of playing Electric I finally got a Acoustic Martin. First done I came across playing this by accident fiddling around and was looking for a break down. Very good teaching!
Dude you're amazing I've been teaching myself guitar for almost 4 years and never learned the scales just the chords bc I was annoyed by most videos. They were either going to fast or not giving enough info. For some reason your video just clicked with me. Thank u so much! I'm looking forward to learning this song to impress my dad. It's one of his favorites!
You got my fingers burning sliding around like that lot of fun couldn't stop till I had it thanks great videos I drive a semi and don't have a way to take lessons
You are the best. I'm recommending you to everyone I know that wants to play guitar. Thank you for all the information and theory you put into this video!!
Hey Rob! I realize this video is 9 years old since you uploaded it but I just checked it out and it's such a clear and concise lesson ( Just like all of your tutorials I might add ) and I just wanted to take a moment to thank you again!
Patient you are.Thank you for sharing your knowledge.I especially like the general tips included (illustrating and defining staccato and 'scratching' chords). Helpful for beginners like myself.
Wow, you are amazing. I could definitely up my skills with regular lessons from you. Loved the pace at which you move along and video is perfect. Going to check out your site for more. THANK YOU!
Thanks a ton for the tutorial brother. Love it. Been playing for near 30 years but never really played too much with picking and/or leads. I know scales of course just never used them much like I said. Been getting the itch last lil while and you make learning a treat instead of a chore. Cheerz and thanks again.
Awesome tutorital! It was simple clear and comprehensible. I appreciate both the tab and the demonstration. I am a guitar teacher myself so I greatly appreciate effective teaching. Keep up the fantastic instructing! Thank you!
Richard Mullens Hey glad you enjoyed it. Yes, this is very similar to Irish jigs. A lot of players would benefit from jamming on those folk tunes, the chord progressions are amazing.
+aeiane01 Hey so glad you liked the lesson. It's my pleasure. Please keep checking back, I'll be posted new videos a few times a week moving forward. Be well. -Rob
Rob, l like your style and how you talk about the scales. I appreciate the visual's you took the time to add. very helpful. Cant wait to learn more from you. again I commend you teaching style
Hello buddy, I was trolling for the intro and "leads" to this great old song and I stumbled onto your amazing video here. Not only did I learn what I wanted to, but a whole heap more!!! Thank you for taking the time to share your gifts with those of us who couldn't quite figure it out on our own, and making us look good for those we pick for in the meantime!!! I am a subscriber and plan on checking out your whole site. Thanks again from a new fan!
TheBamaKid1962 Hey thanks so much for the positive words! Glad you enjoyed this lesson and that my teaching style was helpful. Many more lessons are on the way, please spread the word! I'll look forward to hearing from you again. -Rob
Thanks Rob...I have already passed the word on to the only person I pick with...he's foaming at the mouth to get home and sink his teeth into some good ol' readily digestible "RED MEAT"!!!! We appreciate those who take the time to freely share their God given gifts...and your teaching style is top notch...instead of just getting what I THOUGHT I wanted, (which I did) I got so much more!!! Again, thank you, and thank you for responding...rare these days for folks to say thanks...we could use a bit more etiquette..makes the world a much nicer place to be!
Hi, just found your channel on an older video, looked at a bunch of older lessons and songs and came to this recent vid just to let you know how nice your playing, singing and tutorials are. Don't know why I haven't found you before now, I am your target audience, but will subscribe from now. Thanks for a super channel... Buddy
Buddy Martin Thank a lot for your kind words my friend. Glad you dug this lesson and that you are making use of my other lessons. I'm feeling reinvigorated, so expect many more lessons in the coming days. -Rob
Thanks man, that means a lot. So glad you’re enjoying my teaching! Many more to come both here and via Patreon.com/Swiftlessons. Let me know if you have any requests. Have fun! -Rob
You did a fantastic job breaking this down, Rob. I'd figured out this lead from another TH-cam video - and would have learned it 10x faster if I'd found you first:-) Keep up the excellent work!
+NCB Have you done the lead for the interlude yet? I've tried to break it down from other videos and not sure of a couple of notes - the way you've broken it down here for the intro would certainly take care of that!
Just subscribed to your site… great lesson…. Ive tried to nail this but i fudged the 4th section (morphed it into something else)… now onto the lead in middle of song…

SO well said. You will play as great too. Rock on Bill King!
I feel the same way Bill. Done so much good stuff, but missed so much. Time to start now! By the way, I just turned 59.
I’m 62. Ditto!

I been looking at this guy for 3 years now he is one of the best on the web
Pentatonic is hauntingly from a higher place. It never disappoints.
Love how you tell us what key we are in and the scale to reference!!! Nobody else does that!!!!
