    Holding the phone at arms length is going to introduce parallax in the photos that stitching cannot remove. Best to keep the camera at a fixed point and "walk around your phone" if that makes sense. Technically you should be rotating about the point of convergence. Lenses make that difficult to calculate, but it's going to be close enough to the sensor on a phone because it's tiny.

      So may be we can just use a tripod with a phone mount ☝️

    • @AlexMetslov
      @AlexMetslov หลายเดือนก่อน

      Was about to write same.
      Google Camera app specifically tells to !not move the phone! Ideally use tripod.
      Anyway, you have to anchor phone in space and just rotate angles around the phone (I guess - around the camera would be ideal).

    One thing I really dislike is this app requires permanent internet to use. It's understandable it needs the connection obviously to upload the images for processing, but it has no ability to store images for upload to process later.
    I want to use this in an area outside my city, but it's very remote and a valley between 2 higher rock plateaus and there is basically no cell service in the area, but it has some beautiful areas that would make excellent HDRIs. But due to this internet issue I can't take HDRIs there .
    Even if you try and "bypass" it by opening the app and logging in with internet and then going out to where you want without connection, taking all 51 pictures then waiting until you're back with internet to press the Finish and Process button, it still doesn't work, it will process but feed you back a pure black HDRI. This app needs the ability to take and save images for later.
    Maybe one day I'll have the disposable income to afford a DSLR for this but I was really hoping this app would let me get something for hobby use in the meantime.

    The similar app with Street View app, but the downside is only didn't capture 3 exposures. And also the biggest downside of this app is only available on Apple App Store, and Apple products like iPhones is really expensive. But for manual exposure edits, I'll do it manually on Photoshop.

    got nice results out of it, thanks for the tip! i think your issue is that right after you said you tried to stay at point you start to move and hold the phone away from you.
    it may look dumb, but if you have no tripod with you take your wifes head to place the phone 😂 taking it as an reflection for a car animation/tracking video, does the job for that

    Ah I had better expectations :) but still good enough to match generic reflections. I feel this is the future though as phones are already equipped with great lenses. In the end it comes down to the devs and the user expectations. Great video buddy !

    did you happen to try taking the photos by keeping the phone in the same spot, rather than having yourself stay in the same spot? you said on your proper camera tests you were using a tripod, which is going to keep the camera in the same physical space much more than having the phone outstretched in your arm. which would help with stiching.

    • @marvelousdecay
      @marvelousdecay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually did try taking the phone images with a tripod and the stitching result wasn’t any different. Was quite surprised by that. Hasving the phone on the tripod just increased the difficulty because you need to hit these blue dots.

    • @marvelousdecay
      @marvelousdecay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately it's not. It's using a lot of Apple's SDK to make things work so I'm not surprised that it's iOS only.

    Basically could be helpful on set to get fast HDRI as temporal solution to get a head start. But for real production kinda useless.
    Algorithm also reminded me spherical panoramas mode in camera on Nexus 4. And Nexus processed on device, but without bracketing obviously. But this was like 8 years ago.

    • @marvelousdecay
      @marvelousdecay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It'll be interesting to see where things go next. Probably in a couple of years we will be able to do complex HDRIs on device! That would be something!

      @@marvelousdecay Any change to get increased resolution via some AI upscalling such as Gigapixel or smth? For exterior panoramas I mean.
      I don't know if that any good but 3K is very small.

    • @marvelousdecay
      @marvelousdecay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unparticularnoise9021 AI upscaling could help a tiny bit with known details like branches but at that point I think it would be better to just go ahead and take the panorama with a camera and tripod. The upscaling won’t also help much with omitted details, duplicated or blurred areas. Totally with you. 3K is on the small side.

    • @marvelousdecay

      Unfortunately not at the moment. I think the app is using Apple’s SDK to grab the captures on the 360 dome so it won’t be easy to port it to Android. But I might be wrong on that. Probably worth contacting the developers to show there’s interest for other platforms as well.

    • @aadreein

      @@myztazynizta I used Google Street View for a school project some years ago. It worked probably about the same as this one. As in, really bad.
      I think I read that Google's Camera App also did it? But I never tried it since my Android was too old for that version.
