He's a good engineer for two reasons: 1) he shows you his mixing technique w/ a reference track present (humble man, A+++ in my book), 2) his approach to mixing is simplistic; there's no redundant gear name-dropping, over-the-top self-praise, and unnecessary jargon that just comes off as 'doing too much' as a engineer/teacher...DOPE, he's got my respect and my full attention. Cheers, mate! Real engineers appreciate you!
I feel like I have a good grasp of most basic mixing parameters - eq, compression, reverb etc, but saturation is something I hadn't quite understood properly, until now. Thanks a bunch man
I used these tips on a cover song I recorded for my buddy. He did it for his mom and the song made her cry, I felt very validated seeing a mix I made elicited such an emotional response. Thanks!
That's nice :) My songs have made people cry too, but for me, they were wailing "Make it stop!! Make it stop!!". I'm happy to give them a curated emotional experience, it's humbling.
Hey thanks for this... you should also mention one crucial thing about saturation and modern mixing, and that is gain staging and perceived loudness. Saturating snare or kick a little bit can make them sound even louder and fuller while reducing peaks by 3 or more dB... meaning more headroom and less pumping on the master buss compressor. This was really a game changer for me when I discovered it.
Thanks for the video! Its like you have this remarkable ability to put up a video right at times when im having trouble thinking of something in mixing. I have a song I've been wanting to add more excitement to the vocals so this vid has given me a great idea at just the right time. This happened twice last year when you posted something. It was like boom ureka. And helped the songs come out great. So I dont know how your reading my mind but keep doing it! Lol Thanks again!
Nice tut. Worth mentioning saturation can really help give you more perceived loudness even at lower volumes which is handy in mixing/ mastering for obvious reasons
Great tip regarding the low end saturation man. Never knew that saturating the highs on any low instrument can help them cut through better in a Mix. Thanks mate.
I was so frustrated what saturation does other than distorting and adding volume...watched more than 10 videos on saturation and everybody is just like "it adds harmonic" i still couldn't get its use...but after watching this video i got the very purpose to use saturation and when to use it..thanks from all of my heart..the idea of refrence track was so useful..gonna do it that way now..
Thanks for explaining man..I just thought it added distortion so gave it a swerve..I got ST plugins and they are great..Shame I didnlt know b4 I could have got it during the sale..useful..vocals is the most imp track so every bit helps
Nice video man! Yeah I have decapitator. I have the whole soundtoys bundle. It's really great. I love it on about anything. It's my favorite buss and channel saturation plugin. I also love the VSM-3 saturation plugin from plugin alliance on the mix buss. Its adds a really nice shiny harmonics to the whole mix.
I love the low end that really came alive in her vocals. Almost had something of..: don't touch it, stop right there, its great!! I also thought, why don't you make it a little bit over the top and instead of dailing back ...... use the wet dry mix, to get the right blend :-) oops ... you are doing just that on 8 minutes :-) sorry. Cool video. I really enjoyed this. I once put this plugin on a mix, so on the 2buss. Sounded great. Came to other speakers and it sounded wayyyy to much. That thing got me ignoring decapitator all together. never used it again. So it's kinda fun to see u use it and get really great results on her vocal. :-)
Very nice. I've just started using saturation for adding brightness. I saw a video talking about using distortion in place of OTT (for the addition of crispiness without destroying your dynamics like OTT does). Came here to try and verify the validity of that claim, and seems to be true? :)
Hi, great video. Can you do a full tutorial about the way(s) to emulate a full analog console and tape workflow/chain/structure on Logic Pro X with plugins?
This may be the best saturation video I've ever seen! I'm actually looking for plugins to replace the Fabfilter Saturn & Pro-L2. They are a bit too complicated, and the Saturn's 4 band EQ is too much "power" to work with. I like to keep it simple, while still getting results. I like your style of going until it makes a noticeable difference & then backing it off a bit.
one of the biggest misconceptions about saturation is that you emulate it with a "saturation" plugin and toggle the wet/dry as desired. its not a very good way to think about it. to understand saturation you have to have context of what signal flow is. the real saturation comes when you emulate each stage of the signal flow. how was the beat made? traditionally samples coming from vinyl going to a channel of a mixer track, then probably the master of that mixer, then its being processed with analog eq's and such, then its going into a drum machine, then its going out of a drum machine into a console and out the console master bus. emulate each stage.
This song slaps.. also how would you describe the relationship between drive and and mix? I understand how mix works but what specifically does the drive do to sound? Edit: typo
@@PuppySupreme "Mix" in this case is a special function, where you can use the unsaturated signal alongside the saturated signal. In other words, you run the saturated signal in parallel to the original sound. The "Mix" knob lets you decide how much of each signal you want to hear.
For some reason I hear a significant hard clipping and feedback in hi freq (predominantly at "s" pronunciations), even before decapitator's saturation engaged
guys always ask what it the mixing secret ? the mixing secret is the saturation and harmonic distortion.Analog desks make this.If you find the true saturation mix sounds perfect.

yess man nobody wants to say about that kind suff..
u read my mind dude...
gd luck
Holy hell this is great
Great tutorial! I've been using a little bit of saturation on my drum bus & my 808 recently to give it a little boost & some extra grit.
finally understand saturation, i dunno why other people dont explain it like you!!
Thanks ! Now you opened my eyes for this matter!!
I have told several of my subs the huge benefits of saturation! It’s good to hear someone else applauding this!
Thanks for the video!

Saturation in general and decapitator in particular truly work wonders in electronic music

very helpful, i thought that i knew many things about this topic but i still watched this through and still learned something. Thanks man
Awesome!
great! Now I know what saturation really does to a voice. Thank you for the video.

i have this plugin sitting for 3 years already, now i have to try it. i usually use waves kramer master tape, NLS, and FF saturn. very good review !
Great video, I've dowloaded the cheats sheets but I can't see the Saturation Cheat Sheet, can you help me?
Shout out for the track you used. Everyone uses “Rock” and “Metal” to do tutorials!. Thanks for switching it up !!! 👍

The thing I always like about saturation/distortion is the automatic built in compression !

Best tutorial about saturation
Great saturation tutorial but WOW to the magic A/B plugin!!
Nice one! Can I use a saturation to track only without vocal?
How about the one knob Greg Wells Tone Centric and mix centric plugins for saturation which adds tube, analog circuit and tape saturation.
Thanks this video taught me somethings I didn’t know ....
Keep it coming 💯👈🏿
great great tips on 808 saturation! Im gonna use those tips!

Are you supposed to put saturation before a compressor, or after?
what does the band sing at the video beginning?
"from dust to dust to one of us"?
This may be the best saturation video I've ever seen! I'm actually looking for plugins to replace the Fabfilter Saturn & Pro-L2. Softube has a FREE one knob saturation plugin and its good. You’re welcome.
What are your settings on your FF-limiter and what plug-in is that after the compressor on the lead vocal? 🙏🏿
I need to know if u take sample rate into consideration when using saturation.
Cheers v useful
Low end is sick on this song
interesting and very helpful. Thanks!
So, it means we have to use eq after saturation..... Cause it's adding additional tones🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Great video but I never did get any type of saturation cheat sheet
The cheat sheet seems to be gone? But still loved the video -- I understand saturation 200% more than I did, previously. Thank you!
Might be a dumb question, but why the Gullfoss and the FF Pro Q? Could you get the job with one or the other? Or does both really get the job done?
i didn't receive the cheetsheet via email,why?
thanks man!
Pretty much all of the music I enjoy listening to was recorded in the era of analog tape and tubes so I literally use saturation on everything.
Is it mainly applicable on the mix or individual tracks
How to make airy crispy vocals ???? And how to do parallel compressing on vocals
Do I really need this saturation plugin? Can I use a distortion plugin instead? I have FL studio. I'm a little confused. I make Trance music.
one of the biggest misconceptions about saturation is that you emulate it with a "saturation" plugin and toggle the wet/dry as desired. its not a very good way to think about it. to understand saturation you have to have context of what signal flow is. the real saturation comes when you emulate each stage of the signal flow. how was the beat made? traditionally samples coming from vinyl going to a channel of a mixer track, then probably the master of that mixer, then its being processed with analog eq's and such, then its going into a drum machine, then its going out of a drum machine into a console and out the console master bus. emulate each stage.
In which order would you use the saturation in general? After all processing or like in your chain somewhere in the middle 😃 thanks
change order until you like result
Saturation cheat-sheet not there
I see you use Gullfoss EQ. Nice plug in.
Would you ever consider doing mixing and mastering tutorials on harder bass music like dubstep and edm?
This song slaps.. also how would you describe the relationship between drive and and mix? I understand how mix works but what specifically does the drive do to sound?
Edit: typo
The drive is the amount of saturation. (Was that your question?)
drmedwuast kinda, so the drive is the actual amount of the effect pushed into the sound whereas mix is like the volume of that sound?
@@PuppySupreme
"Mix" in this case is a special function, where you can use the unsaturated signal alongside the saturated signal.
In other words, you run the saturated signal in parallel to the original sound. The "Mix" knob lets you decide how much of each signal you want to hear.
Correct!
