Hey Matt if you keep going over the BMF with your Q-Tip it will chrome up. Q-Tip basically polishes it up to a nice reflective chrome. You know you’re doing it right when your Q-Tips start turning black. Keep repeating with new Q-Tips after they get to black.
Very nice work! I, myself, do strips around the windows placing the overlap in the same place where two pieces overlap on the real car. That’s just my personal preference. I consider foil work to be my favorite part of building model cars. I find it therapeutic, so I have that kind of patience level!😂
I use toothpicks to burnish down the bmf in troughs. Don't press hard but firm so as not to tear the bmf. Polish up with the toothpick. I use the BACK of cheap aluminum foil to simulate stainless steel.

Purchased Bare Metal via catalog back in the day. There were no local hobby shops for me. One trick I've been using lately and liking is coloring my blade black with a Sharpie. My eye is not so good and even with a 3x lens and a 10x lighted magnifier lens, I couldn't distinguish the blade and the foil.
I love the video and that stash is just awesome and I know I've mentioned it before but I said it again LOL. I've got another brand of foil coming today that I got from Hobbylinc. Back 20 some years ago I used over 7 sheets of foil on a DC -3 Eastern airlines Plane! That is how I got back back in the hobby! I thought it was fairly easy to use! From there I went crazy building for about ten years! Once I saw how realistic it made trim on model cars the rest is history! Very cool video man!🤔🫡🇺🇸ps I didn’t build many airplanes after that! 😝🇺🇸

Great video and "how you do it" tutorial, thank you! Keep a small block of wood with a piece of leather on it handy. You can use it to whet your cutter blades and they will last a lot longer and stay a lot sharper. Being disabled with time on my hands I also use a Lansky sharpener to sharpen my blades when they get too dull to whet them on the leather. I haven't had to buy any new blades for a long time.
@@modelcarvideos5829, P.S. Also, try a bit of polishing compound on your leather strop, it helps to get a superfine edge on your blade. This also works great for kitchen knives, hunting knives, pocket knives, box cutter blades, etc., etc.
Matthew, when I put on BMF, I will literally hold my breath, or exhale slowly when i'm cutting. If you wake-up in the emergency room you've held your breath for too long
I enjoyed watching you do this. My luck with BMF was never so good, but it looks easy when you do it. You stopped the video before getting to those ribbed pieces between the wheel opening and the door, that was where I wanted to see how you kept them all matching, I'm guessing you had to slow down when you got to that spot, to avoid pulling off pieces you already cut. Anything close together like that was my downfall. Thanks for demonstrating the process.
Hey Matthew if you look at the 1 to 1 car do have overlap scenes in the Chrome around the windshield and the back glass but it is what it is you do a great job on your model and thanks for sharing
Brilliant Matthew I just started to foil the exact same kit only 1 hour ago, maybe I'll have to break my self chosen Facebook break, and show it when it's done, mine is branded as CC LEE kit, and made out of some funky plastic, that has to be glued like resin, actually it was sold in a autoparts store chain here in denmark, and not in a hobby shop, it has a reputation of being one of the kits that's not ment for being built, just ask kim Sodapop Søndergaard, i think he dumped his in the trashcan, I'm going to prove them wrong,, hopefully,, 😬

So figure a '59 Caddy would be a two sheeter?! 🙈 Agree with one big piece for windshield trim, although some cars (Like my "70 Chevelle) have a multi-piece trim set with overlap, so just copy it as such. Also with using large pieces of foil, just place the cut away scrap onto another section of body with smaller sized part, like headlight trim, etc. since already lifted from sheet. And been asking you a few times what the brand, or where in Hobby Lobby the thin black tubing is? Can't find, and employees are clueless.
do you ever have any residue issues? if so, how do you remove it? every time I've tried it (2 separate batches) it left a glue residue all over my paint. you make it look so easy!...
Amazing work! Have u personally clear coated over the foil? If so Have u ever had an issue with the clear coat melting the glue on the underside and resulting in wavy or bumpy clear coat? This is the only issue I can imagine would come up. Given that the solvent!thinner of the clear can melt the glue. Thanx again!😊
It doesn't affect it. I use it over emblems or raised letters then paint the body and take a q-tip with a little thinner and go over the lettering/emblem to remove the paint from them exposing the foil underneath. If that makes sense.

What about the spot on your sheet where the BMF has pulled away from the backing sheet? Do you use this area or do you cut around it and throw it away? I have a hard time not trying to use every little piece. I will cut the backer to try and minimize waste.
Lets say hypothetically you want to apply chrome to the entire car, would it be practical to use this material for that? Ive used spray paint in the past and found its hard to get an even mirror finish.

Great tutorial Matthew. My problem with BMF is that it doesn’t stick anymore after sitting on the shelf for long time (no exposure to light or heat). I know I’m asking too much from a product to work for years but where can I buy fresh production? I also bought this “new improved chrome” type from amazon, not very much difference.
I buy directly from them so it's as fresh as possible, in theory at least. Who knows how long it sits around an Amazon warehouse. What you can do too is after you cut your piece out heat it up with a hair dryer then apply it. Helps to make the adhesive a little more tacky.
I wish they would put a manufacturing date & an expiration date on the package. I have bought "New" sheets that were obviously "OLD" & would not stick. Talk about aggravating...sometimes I'd rather prefer a root canal that to use BMF
I’ve built models for 30+ years and then took 6-7 years away from model building but I recently returned to it and my first kit that I’ve done upon my return was wonderful….. until……… the BMF!!!!!! 😡 I’m ready to quit model building altogether over BMF. I just can’t get it right!

I've never had good luck with Bare Metal Foil .... Silver Sharpie has worked well for me and it is cheaper too!!

I sometimes do the same but I'll cut the tip off of the toothpick and round it over so it's not as pointy.

I would recommend using Molotow Liquid Chrome for smaller parts.

It's a real crap shoot on getting a good sheet. I totally feel your pain!
