Well yeah, of course. Snake's life ran out part-way through that hall. That's where anyone else would die... ...But he then used his Psyche as a second health bar. Snake lived through sheer willpower. Mother of God.
I'm glad someone gets it. That's Solid Snake's "superpower" sheer will. And it's exactly this that makes his character truly unique and someone to look up to.
I have a lot of problems with this game but I will always love how powerful a lot of its emotional moments are. There are a couple other times where the psyche meter is used as a cool way of putting us in Snake's head but somehow I never noticed that Snake's psyche jumps to 100% when he sees Raiden. What a fucking awesome moment between two characters who understand each other better than anyone else. Thanks for pointing this out.
I think it was the fact that raiden showed up, no arms, but here to fight anyways. Snake probably thought he needed to get his shit together. Incredibly motivating.
Even as snake is dying from his rapid aging he gives raiden some final advice by telling him not to waste his youth fighting and he can start his life over and be happy. That's some powerful adviceto give someone
It's even more beautiful when you realize that letting go of hatred and moving on is something MGSV's protagonist could not do. The mark twain quote in the intro sums it up perfectly. "Anger is an acid that does more damage to the vessel in which it is stored than on anything on which it is poured."
The only time I've genuinely yelled at my TV out of anger and sadness. That shit tore me up when I was a kid. All of them did. I'm 29 now and they still hit me lol
"I am lightning. The rain transformed." And Old Snake's Psyche meter went all the way back up, because you're damn right it did. To anyone who still mocks Raiden after this scene, you clearly don't appreciate that becoming the next Gray Fox was the best thing that ever happened to him.

This is why I started playing Metal Gear Solid like the entire Franchise... Never saw how Feeling Driven, Emotional and Touching this Game Actually is... The story... The characters... The Backstory... The soundtrack.... Everything is so good! This game is like a Book or a Movie! ...Wow, I am not ashamed to say that I am now a MGS Fanboy! ...And Kojima great work!
I remember hammering x with my thumb untill it hurt, all the time willing snake on awith a tear in my eye as his body was undergoing this punishment, like a martyr for all the sins comited by Bigboss and Zero. RIP snake.
One of the most powerful things I've experienced in a game. It's just perfect.... Today's QTE in games are just garbage. They are just badly implemented. Look at Beyond Two Souls for example. The game used the exact same concept for the last scene. Apart from the fact that it sounds like plagiarism, the QTE in this scene were poorly integrated... Which is almost comical for a game that uses QTE as primary gameplay. Reason why is because they were incredibly easy to do (just like in all of today's games). I was just there tapping buttons for Ellen Page to move forward. In other words boring and uninteresting. David Cage might as well just made this a non-playable cinematic. And the problem lies within the fact that David Cage wants us to be moved by this scene. But how can you do this when the poorly implemented QTE make this scene boring and uninteresting? As a result, this scene felt incredibly cheesy. Which is really odd for a game that was supposed to give an 'incredible emotional experience'... But Hideo Kojima on the other hand made this scene just perfectly. The button-mashing wasn't easy to do so that you could clearly feel a sense of drama and emotion. But at the same time it wasn't insanely hard like in GOW1 for example where you would feel frustrated. In other words you have the perfect balance... Your connection with Snake reaches a 100% when you're getting at the end of the hallway. Your fingers are tired and you want to stop... But you can't, you want to keep going forward, you want to finish the game, you want to make it all end once and for all... Just like Snake wants to. Finally you see the door at the end of the hallway... You can't take it anymore, but there is still a sparkle of hope that makes you want to reach the next cinematic. And finally the screen goes black... You are tired, exhausted... Just like Snake. In other words, the character bonding that you get in this scene is just phenomenal. No other game has made me feel so close to a character... And I repeat: No. other. game. Take notes all you developers that thinks you can give us an 'incredible character-bonding experience'... This is how you do it...
MGS4 was the first game in the series I played all the way through; I can only imagine what the microwave chamber must have been like for those who have followed the series from the beginning. It's such an emotional moment; you feel every last drop of pressure placed on Snake to get through and stop Liquid.
"Character bonding that you get in this scene is just phenomenal. No other game has made me feel so close to a character" - couldn´t say it better my friend :-)
With the amount of shit this man endured through the whole game before the microwave door, I wouldn’t blame anyone from thinking this door was his last.
One of the most powerful moments in a video game. Everything's going to hell, and Snake manages to push on through will alone as one final act of heroism. Beautifully done.

Exactly. Snake is the embodiment of never giving up. You might be surprised to hear how many people love this character for exactly that. But when you happen to watch some MGS video read the comments. It's this undaunting determination that has kept people together, that has kept them going and sane. You will not find another game to inspire people like that.
11 years ago? Jeez I remember my dad thinking the graphics looked insanely real, particularly Snake smoking on the loading screen between chapters. Time sure flies...
This hurt me when I played this part 1st time. After going through the series, seeing how much of a hero this guy was to us all. I had to fight back the tears.
The longest most cinematic and emotional WALK I've ever done in a video game. Even Hideo Kojima can make a man walking down a small metal corridor epic in every way.
robdee81 Suspension of disbelief is fine for some cases, but when you stand still and allow a dialogue between two targets you are supposed to kill, you are an idiot. This scene could be handled better. Raiden could have killed the Frogs and then had this scene with Snake and just when Snake is about to leave, Raiden would continue fighting any incoming reinforcements.
Loved this scene, so emotional! I also love Raiden's character growth between MGS2 and MGS4, and his continued character growth throughout the game. I know at first everybody hated Raiden because they were expecting Solid Snake and people apparently thought he was kinda wimpy, but now he's become a badass and beloved character in his own right! Although, I always liked Raiden, but perhaps that's because I didn't play MGS2 until years later, after it came out, and I knew ahead of time that I wouldn't be playing as Solid Snake. Either way, I like Raiden. I still prefer Snake, but Raiden's always been okay in my book and in MGS4 he becomes downright awesome!
"Guys, look! An injured enemy too debilitated to pick up his weapon! Shit, there're only 6 armed people on our side, approach him on high alert! We don't know what he's capable of! Except picking up his weapon, that's all we know he's not capable of, and that could mean anything! One step at a time, guys!"
Darkstar How far up your ass did you reach to pull that one out? It's an ARMED enemy. But no, of course they were pitying him and wanted to help, that's why they drew knives. For delicate surgery. How could I have not seen it?
Darkstar Sigh, that actually just adds to my point, which is that it makes no sense for them to be creep-walking. If the character could break the fourth wall, it would ask why the hell it was doing something so unfathomably pointless, because if it hurried up it may not have died. It's like in those anime episodes when the antagonist has the protagonist in a corner, but for plot convenience doesn't finish what he obviously can and should, allowing the hero to make his miracle comeback. That's what I'm criticizing. Yes, sometimes it allows for good (important) emotional tension and can be executed properly, but this scene just came across as egregious.
It is a great cut scene. You have to love the fact that video games can do crazy things without worrying to much about realism and logic. Consider it are escape from the real world.
Bewt if the phantom pain becomes game of the year i hope all those hardcore cod and battlefield players who don't like anything else but games like that cry
Phantom Pain never really comes close to matching the scope and sheer epic magnitude of the final few sections beginning with your return to Shadow Moses island in MGS IV. That said, I didn't expect it to. MGS IV was the conclusion to the series and last in the timeline. The Phantom Pain, though said to be the last game in the series takes place right in the middle of the chronology. Its job isnt to deliver an epic climax but rather to tie up remaining loose ends in a satisfying manner which is does a reasonably good job at.
Guanglai Kangyi, Age 15 big boss helped create the Patriots after he killed the Boss in 1964. Zero wanted to use the legacy and name of Big Boss in a way that Big Boss came to despise so Zero created clones made of his genes which causes them to have a fall out. Zero never really wanted him dead as far as I know, he even helped save his life after he fell into a coma in 1975. After the events of MGSV while Venom Snake helped shape the legacy of Big Boss, the actual Big Boss started to lead Fox Hound again (as he created it in the early 70’s but left it to create MSF)
The final fight against Ocelot and this Scene were the sole reasons why i replayed this game over and over and over again This scene made my thumbs hurt lmao who knew it was possible to press one button at like, 600 BPM?
I don't know why. But I get too into games. And this scene hit me hard. "Your body may be a machine, but you still have a life to go back to". I could be wrong. But Snake was telling Raiden that he's not done yet. He has more to live for than what he thinks. Snake's life is nearly at the end, and wants to end his mission with pride. Throughout all the battle scars. Diffidently my favorite scene from the game.
I used to be a proud Xbox 360 gamer & MGS fan years ago, until one day I couldn't take it anymore, I had to play this game, so I bought a PS3 just for this game. I will never regret that decision.
+The Crimson Fucker I think porting MGS4 to the PC would be the best way of preserving the series, without limiting it to console generations. Every single one is available to play on PC, except MGS4. The PS3 cell processing system is incredibly difficult to learn how to use, to porting/emulating these games proves exceedingly difficult.
If you pay close Attention, you will noticed that Sunny is Frying 3 Eggs and Each one come out perfect. Each egg was a Metaphor for one of the Main Heros. And put in as a hint to tell everyone will live through this fight. Edit: 8:58
A Metaphor is a figure of speech in which an expression/figure of speech is used to refer to something that it doesn't literally mean what's suggested but more as a Hint what's to come. They are usually hinted at by a writer or used to make a story feel more deep.
It's also the Spelling for Metaphor in several languages. Here's a few Example. American English: metaphor /ˈmɛtəfɔr/ Brazilian Portuguese: metáfora Chinese: 隐喻 European Spanish: metáfora French: métaphore German: Metapher Italian: metafora Japanese: 比喩 Korean: 은유 European Portuguese: metáfora Latin American Spanish: metáfora Thai: คำอุปมา
@@truehath The example I gave above applies to all of those Alternative Spelling. I originally put Metafora in my post on account English is not my first language and used that spelling of it out of habit. But in the contexts it would be Incorrect so I switched it to the English varrient. And I listed off the other Spelling in the event a later commenter try to say Either of Us are wrong. Hope this helps. Edit: Also, have you played MGS 4 before?
For Sale: PS3 Controller. Condition: Used Description: It was used a lot but still works. But the triangle button sometimes doesn't register when pressed. I don't know why. I only played one game.
I think the part of this scene that makes it so incredibly moving is knowing that even though Snake is in agony and wants nothing more than to give up, both he and the player know that if he does, it's all over.
i love how not only was snake trying but you had to try as hard as you could to also get across i remember my arm felt like it was ripping apart the time i tried this
I didn't notice until my replay last week, but I like that Raiden wears a vest here with the same symbol as Snake. It feels good seeing Raiden as a part of the homies.
The problem with this scene is that his walk through corridor takes about 4 minutes, but 800 Watts microwave cooks proteins in 30 seconds to 1 minute. His muscles and brain would have died in the first few seconds.
This was the most intense sequence I've ever played in a video game. Cheering on my own character while fighting off tears... and the action on the top is so distracting. Such an amazing scene. Worthy of film.
Microwaves generally increase the temperature of whatever it encounters. If you're asking if the microwaves increase intensity, maybe. There is no way to be sure which parts of the tunnel were at full emission.
I love metal gear. May sound weird but i do, It really to me is inspirational. I really wish i could meet kojima once to tell him how much i appreciate the impact he's achieved with such a masterpiece...
03:03 Dead troopers. Doggy style 03:55 "Hey, how bout' telling our plan to put a virus while two still very alive FROGs watching us. Sure they won't tell anyone right?"
I'm not going to lie, I was on the verge of tears during this scene. Had it ended there with Snake's death it would have been perfect. The mashing triangle could not have highlighted the struggle and futility thereof of Snake's position more. My mashing became slower and slower as my tears welled up. I knew it was hopeless, and I felt like fucking shit. This scene will forever stay with me as one of the best scenes in video game history. Thank you Kojima.
BB erased the past and identity of his best soldier and made him into his body double. Snake wouldn't let Raiden go through this torture corridor, even with Raiden making a decent point about his body being a machine.
Snake was the only one who could walk through the corridor; everyone that got into that place would be fucked up for life, not even Raiden could do it, so he sacrificed his body for the greater good...yet manages to CQC a Liquid-Ocelot to death moments after! amazing
How I would have done this scene: Raiden has died his whole body was crushed by the tanker at the island, when he helped snake escape. So snake is walking to the chamber dramatic music plays in the background as soilders fill from every corner, snakes back is facing them so he doesn't see the soilders coming. The little robot thing opens the chamber door and the soilders see snake going into the chamber they stop aiming at snake in disbelief, and they watch as he enters the chamber as the door closes instead of the scenes of the people fighting snake has flashbacks of his entire life from every heat blast he takes, when he exits the chamber you see his entire face burned. And the game continues from there.
+Jonathan Duran Or Meryl just sprints through the hallway without problems, while Snake holds her post while Akiba proposes to him. If Snake in his abysmal state can survive MINUTES in there, then Meryl can easily survive the ten seconds it would take an average person to sprint that distance. Or nobody goes in, and the Mk. III rolls through it alone. Snake didn't do a thing in there except fight off dwarf geckos, which they didn't expect, and which would have been fooled by the Mk. III's stealth camo. I'm not hating on the series. Drama comes from unavoidable personal sacrifice, and in this scene, it's forced by the writer. It could have been easily fixed, and I agree. Raiden's sacrifice would have meant more, had he died either here or on Shadow Moses.
+Jonathan Duran That's actually quite a good idea ; I actually would like to see something like that in a future MGS Game. Though interestingly they kinda did something somewhat similar with the ladder scene in MGS3. Well there wasn't any cut scenes or flash backs as such but apparently it was done to make the player contemplate what's happened and what will happen next during the long climb.
2:42 Raiden: “My body is a machine, I can take it.”
Snake: “Raiden, have you ever put a metal fork in a microwave?!”
Well yeah, of course. Snake's life ran out part-way through that hall. That's where anyone else would die...
...But he then used his Psyche as a second health bar.

I swear to god, if Phantom Pain has a moment that's HALF as good as this one it'll be GOTY,
Bewt if the phantom pain becomes game of the year i hope all those hardcore cod and battlefield players who don't like anything else but games like that cry
How did Big Boss become a Patriot and create Foxhound if Zero wanted him dead?
Alot of people ignore Snake's impact on Raiden and say Armstrong is the one who changed him.
The final fight against Ocelot and this Scene were the sole reasons why i replayed this game over and over and over again
This scene made my thumbs hurt lmao who knew it was possible to press one button at like, 600 BPM?
Fucking Roanoa Zoro over here!
I shed some manly tears during this scene, one of the best in the game. MGS4 is still my favorite game of all time.
@7:18 Otacon: Fuck this, I'm outta here!
I learned true fear, when that first door opened in the microwave hall....
tbfp
I used to be a proud Xbox 360 gamer & MGS fan years ago, until one day I couldn't take it anymore, I had to play this game, so I bought a PS3 just for this game.
I will never regret that decision.
Dat Asspect ratio T_T
Snake has a heart attack, gets up, goes through hallway has another heart attack, and lives to fight and beat Liquid. Solid Snake is a legend.
saddest metal gear moment ever.
To think, the first MGS torture qte made you interact. This one took you and Snake to a whole new level.
I think they should remaster the first metal gear games for modern consoles.
Definitely so! oh the nostalgia! 😍
Edit: 8:58
Whats a metafore
A Metaphor is a figure of speech in which an expression/figure of speech is used to refer to something that it doesn't literally mean what's suggested but more as a Hint what's to come.
They are usually hinted at by a writer or used to make a story feel more deep.
It's also the Spelling for Metaphor in several languages.
Here's a few Example.
American English: metaphor /ˈmɛtəfɔr/
Brazilian Portuguese: metáfora
Chinese: 隐喻
European Spanish: metáfora
French: métaphore
German: Metapher
Italian: metafora
Japanese: 比喩
Korean: 은유
European Portuguese: metáfora
Latin American Spanish: metáfora
Thai: คำอุปมา
@@KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven I said metafore not metaphor, metáfora, 隐喻, metáfora, métaphore, Metapher, metafora, 比喩, 은유, metáfora, metáfora, คำอุปมา
I need this game on PC.
For Sale: PS3 Controller. Condition: Used Description: It was used a lot but still works. But the triangle button sometimes doesn't register when pressed. I don't know why. I only played one game.
LOL
aaahhhhhhhhhhhh siiiimmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
8:58 damn sunny you are cooking sunny side up while snake and everyone else is dying?!
you too Otocon!
OMG THAT GUY IS RAIDEN JACK THE RIPPER?
Raidens ripper mode comes later
1:30 Raiden about to smite a bitch
I think the part of this scene that makes it so incredibly moving is knowing that even though Snake is in agony and wants nothing more than to give up, both he and the player know that if he does, it's all over.
He is not the hero world needs, he is the hero the world deserves!
i love how not only was snake trying but you had to try as hard as you could to also get across i remember my arm felt like it was ripping apart the time i tried this
I didn't notice until my replay last week, but I like that Raiden wears a vest here with the same symbol as Snake. It feels good seeing Raiden as a part of the homies.
This was one of the most touching moments in video game history for me.
And good on you for it honestly the internet is better thanks to people like you.
Man this is epic beyond measures
i wish the US army had someone like snake.
That hallway sequence is one of the most powerful scenes in gaming history imho.
The problem with this scene is that his walk through corridor takes about 4 minutes, but 800 Watts microwave cooks proteins in 30 seconds to 1 minute. His muscles and brain would have died in the first few seconds.
Dude, he’s SOLIDDDD SNAKE for a reason
This was the most intense sequence I've ever played in a video game. Cheering on my own character while fighting off tears... and the action on the top is so distracting. Such an amazing scene. Worthy of film.
Currently watching this right after watching MGS3 Debriefing & MGS2 Emma's Death. Getting my cry out of the way for the rest of 2019.
My whole childhood was being drained away...
This was one of the hardest chapter to do because of watching snake suffering
Microwaves generally increase the temperature of whatever it encounters. If you're asking if the microwaves increase intensity, maybe. There is no way to be sure which parts of the tunnel were at full emission.
I love metal gear. May sound weird but i do, It really to me is inspirational. I really wish i could meet kojima once to tell him how much i appreciate the impact he's achieved with such a masterpiece...
"Did you rike it?"
I love the typo. "I am lighting."
When I first crawled through it, it felt WAY longer then 4 minutes.
This part was perfectly made !
You were not the only one. I played that part a few days ago and serious was tapping the triangle button like a mad man and heart racing.
03:03 Dead troopers. Doggy style
03:55 "Hey, how bout' telling our plan to put a virus while two still very alive FROGs watching us. Sure they won't tell anyone right?"
the most epic scene of the series
Why David Hayter left MGS after this game: "I think snakes been through enough."
This part really sucked. I've never felt so sad in my life. Another reason why I'm glad the Japanese are on our side.
Snake wouldn't let Raiden go through this torture corridor, even with Raiden making a decent point about his body being a machine.
going through the actual microwave hall, i never mashed a controller button so hard in my life
The scene... the double screen... the dramatic music... KOJIMA YOU ARE A FUCKING GENIUS!
Even if you didn't play the other games this game awesome but when you play every game,MGS4 it's beyond awesome
+Jonathan Duran Thats surprisingly good, y'know, konami need a new koj
+Jonathan Duran id have also had meryl and johnny killed aswel to add to the drama
+Jonathan Duran
Or Meryl just sprints through the hallway without problems, while Snake holds her post while Akiba proposes to him.
Sercil Genius!
6:24 my leftover chicken tender when I warm it up the fifth time
LOL
