This is the scope I use on my BCA 5.56 rifle, and it refuses to let go of zero. Man, this thing has taken a lot of abuse, drops, rapid fire mag dumps, and it's still dialed in like a mf. Will continue to grab more monstrum scopes for my next builds.

Charles Miller did a ton of research on this scope. Basically, practical on the end for a family guy who wants to complete an at build without spending 1000 dollars on a second focal plane scope that will be obsolete soon. I’m sold! Love it on my ar. Great for hunting hogs also! Scope worked perfectly.

nice review. good info as always.
This looks like a good budget option.
I gotta say though i just dont get the FFP configuration on LPVOs or any scope under 10x to 12x or so, especially a 1-4x.
Theres just no way to use the BDC on 1 or 2x and maybe even 3x. its just too small to see.
Most BDCs arent useable until 2.5 to 3x so what you end up with is a 1x to 4x scope. Youll use 1x for CQB using it as a red dot, and then crank to 4x to use the BDC.
Youd be better served with SFP imo.
The FFP reticle is smaller than optimal on 1x and usually larger than optimal on 4x or max mag where as the SFP reticle is the ideal size and stays that size regardless of mag setting. Its perfect for CQB/red dot use and for longer range/BDC use.
I even prefer my PA SFP 1-8x ACSS scope to my PA platinum FFP 1-8x ACSS. scope for these reasons.
I use my SFP on 1x for CQB out to 50 yds or so and crank to 8x for everything else.
I do occasionally set to 3.5x where i have enough mag for precision and a large FOV for run n gun where the flat shooting 5.56 cartridge allows a 300 yd range without need for the BDC anyway. Beyond that i go directly to 8x where the BDC is calibrated and capable from 35 yds to 800 yds and i still have a good useable FOV especially beyond 100 yds. easy peasy.
FFP is all the rage right now in the optics industry and the LPVOs in particular but i think if most users really thought it through, SFP options would serve them better.
SFP is generally less expensive to manufacture and lighter to boot.
    Advantage SFP imo.

Finally I read a comment in line with exactly my feelings about it and for exactly the same reasons. Its good to hear this from someone who is basing it on experience not just logicike I am since I am new to lpvo . Ive been wrestling with this idea sincd I amookjng to purchase my first lpvo and though I hear all this current praise for first focal plane in my logic i can't see the benefit for lower magnification where the reticle is to small to use anyway and the 5.56 is so flat shooting out to perhaps 300 yrds. Exactly what Ive just heard you point out. Without experience, ive been thinking maybe useful for 8x and up and not much use in 6x or less whiich is what im considering. But your experience says even at 1- 8 or 1-10 its not a lot of use for most of tfe range . Thanks for your thoughts on this. I think a 1x6 SFP will serve me just as well and savd me a few bucks too.

This is a scope that needs to be banged around some so see if it holds zero, for me that’s one of the biggest worries with a cheap scope, that with a little action it may lose zero, if it’s waterproof and holds zero and is fairly robust, I’m happy.

Monstrum makes some solid scope rings IMO I always hone scope rings before using them however I don't see Monstrum rings being all that out of round and you need a little change for clamping force. For the cost I don't see any reason to not use Monstrum mounts on an expensive rifle as long as everything is honed and the screws are given some good Loctite. I do like that reticle, honestly I prefer higher magnification but I did just buy a Northtac 1-4x24 LPVO and it was a killer deal but the Monstrum reticle seems better for close in. I slapped that Northtac on my extremely lightweight Pro2A 18" .350 Legend AR-15 it blows my mind how light that rifle is even with a fairly heavy barrel. I expect a 4x is plemty for a cartridge like the .350 Legend that isn't all that effective for hunting beyond 150 yards.

James Vaughn shooting is expensive and honestly glass has never been cheaper than it is today. we live in a golden age of private firearms ownership in terms of availability and technology. that said you're better off getting a good warranty for optics. they're very sensitive and have a lot of small moving parts.

Hi and thanks for all the vids. I really like this idea of yours, to review the budget optics, since for the most part, all there are out there, are very amatuer reviews, in that category... One suggestion/request is to focus in on how well it holds zero after X amount of rounds, etc and also, how hard was it to zero (ie: turret tracking) Of course, were not expecting "box" quality tracking out of budget optics but I do recall having a moving zero, which felt like the turrets, on a 3-9x Monstrum, but it was manageable. Thx again

First focal plane in my opinion is useless on low magnification optics. Your either all the way up or all the way down on this type of scope, reducing the size of the reticle in one 1x just makes your target acquisition a little bit harder. I bought a high dollar ffp 1 x 4 and regret it, I wish I had stuck with second focal plane. First focal plane really is only effective for long range shooting. Which you're not doing with this type of optic.

Thanks for the video,Like you I also communist state that being New York for me and both California and New York have to deal with the stupid idiotic gun laws.I have owned a couple AR's in the past but everyone that I owned was mainly using flip up sights,I am going to be buying a new AR-15 come mid February and I would like to put a Optic on it.My main use would be for both gun range and self defense if needed. My concern with getting Optic is what should I get for one,At the range I am going to be shooting between 25 yards to 100 yards at the most. I remember watching one of your video's where you where talking about people who have a astigmatism, well for me I wear corrective eye glasses and do suffer from having a astigmatism..could you tell me what would you recommend for a person such as myself get for scope or say a red dot with magnifier? I really do like the red dot for it is illuminated in the view finder as for me it is easier to see then your standard scope reticles..My budget for a new Optic would be between $250.00 and $300.00.. Again Thanks for the video and I am looking forward to see more videos about AR-15 and Optics and how you make them CA compliant..Oh I do know that the CA Gun Laws and NY Gun Laws are pretty close to be the same so we both have to deal with them..

Wish I could even afford this scope. I have a holosun and with astigmatism the dot is terrible and it won't hold zero. I had 2 spinal fusion surgeries and can't work. I need a scope to be able to shoot it for home defense but my luck, I just can't afford anything that is worth anything. Thanks for this review though

You can't beat iron sights. I mean I grew up using iron sights I'm 44 years old now. I can hit a human-sized Target with my Sig m400 AR-15 with the a2 front sight carry handle rear sight at 600 yards in under 4 seconds. On a good day.
I tell people all the time you know these objects are great but...... If you break it what are you going to do?
I think people should learn on iron sights and keep them as backup if that's an option. Because even though Scopes like this usually don't just break...... It can happen.
I carry a Beretta 92fs everywhere I go. Nothing fancy straight up iron sights right out of the box. It was manufactured in March of 93. I can punch a hole out of a Target at 30 yards with that thing very easily. When I get closer....... Jesus Christ I can about spell my name on the paper.😂
Don't get me wrong though it takes time to get good with whatever you're using as a site set up. There's no doubt about that.
I am looking forward to putting my banshee on my new AR pistol build though. I want to see how good I can get with it. I mean if I can do that with iron sights..... With practice I mean who knows?

  • @holdernewtshesrearin5471

good review. however ffp optics do not "cover more of the target" as magnification increases.
the target and reticle stay the same size in relation to one another. i.e. they both get magnified so they both get larger.
in a sfp optic, only the target grows with magnification increase.
the reticle stays the same size but the target gets larger in relation to the target.
the reticle does cover or occlude more of the target with magnification decrease though because the target gets smaller but the reticle remains the same.
i know it can be confusing to describe but just think like this.
with ffp both target and reticle get magnified.
with sfp only the target gets magnified.
now, alls good until someone creates a 3rd focal plane optic!
    wtf?

Scopes are not that expensive to make, idc how clear the glass is or how good the sand is. It's marketing, and why does ffp cost more then sfp?
