  • Ordinary, everyday fishing line has been used to produce artificial muscles with super human strength.
By twisting and coiling simple fishing line and applying heat, powerful artificial muscles are produced. The new muscles can lift one hundred times more weight and generate one hundred times higher mechanical power than human muscle.
Science journal has published a paper (February 21) in which researchers explain that the coils can be powered thermally by temperature changes, by absorption of light, or by chemical reaction of fuels, causing the dramatic contraction and expansion of the coil.

This should be quite handy for the many applications in which things need to be lifted a few millimetres.

In a robotic application, how do you go about rapidly heating and cooling the "muscle" to achieve muscle-like movement?

How does the line not uncoil when you disconnect the static connection point opposite the one rotating?
