- Electric Locomotives are rather underappreciated compared to Steam or Diesel Locomotives in North America. Most systems that used to run them either switched to diesel, or shut down completely. From steeplecabs to Interurban Giants, Northeastern Gigachads to Powerful passenger locomotives, were gonna go through another 10 words or less video covering the wide variety of Electric Locomotives.
Well its been a year since I released "Every EMD Locomotive Described in 10 Words or Less", and that ended up being the most popular video on the channel. Alongside making further installments on my channel, many people have made their own 10WOL videos. I want to say thank you all for the support on this series, and I'm glad most of y'all gotten inspiration off this series, and here's to finishing the series off in 2024!!

I like how old electrics can generally be classified as either "cute lil guy" or "DAMN. HUGE"
Thats what she said
Or, in the words of history in the dark, "UNSPEAKBLY POWERFUL"

He described NJT's entire roster perfectly 10/10
6:28 For those who may be wondering, he was about to say "mandated passenger variant." EVERY. FRICKIN'. TIME.
5:16 Fun fact, the original EF-1 set is still around and preserved at the Lake Superiors Railroad Museum in Duluth Minnesota, they even let you go inside the units.
I always found the shapes electrics came in funny, you have so many that are just a box on wheels, all the crocodilian variants of the steeplecab, a couple bulldog noses, and the **ABSOLUTE GIGACHAD** of the GG-1.
3:12 fun fact, 4 (initially 5) of the 6 are preserved, 6710 is at two mountains, 6711 basically punched her ticket to preservation at the canadian rr museum, by opening the line in 1918, 6712 was donated to the town of mount royal but they sadly scrapped her as they could not find a spot to display, 6714 is at the halton county rr, and 6715 is at the canadian science and tech museum in ottawa. The scrapped one 6713 was used as a spares donor. And 6710 recently got a beautiful cosmetic restoration.
6714 is still at the connecticut trolley museum as of today for now
@@pnhrailroadah ok
VERY soon it’ll be in canada i promise
Great to see another installment of this great series, once again covering many little known electrics that even I didn't know exist, especially from the New Haven.
You should make a part 2 or Electric locomotive Extinct, OR do a video of Electric locomotives that survived that we don't even know they existed back then
fun fact: there is a DD1 that was preserved at the railroad museum of Pennsylvania
I find this to be an amusing summary of the electric locomotives of North America! Also, I didn't realize just how many electric locomotives were produced for lines that aren't even electrified anymore (N de M, BC Rail, Northeast Corridor freight, the Milwaukee Road).
Thanks for making this!
The fact that you included the GF6C, bonus in my mind. Props on the research done!
The ACS-64 is basically an American Vectron
With every bit of the Euro version's 8600hp, minus the F***ing PZB haha.
The Alaska Railroad
One day, Alaska will be linked to the rest of the USA by rail via the Alaska-Alberta Railway. And let’s hope that there could be cool new electric locomotives that will operate it.
5:53 '"We built this locomotive" -Some random guys in the USSR
the reviewed in 10 words or less series is one of my favorites, and it has its funny moments
6:29:
*MANDATED PASSENGER VARIANT*
Basically "Mandated Passenger Variant" joke is basically Cowl Unit Productions' version of the "Don't Call Me Dirty Percy" joke
Love the narration... bordering on scandalous... almost made my scharfenberg uncouple 😂
My fave loco was the E60... big, boxy, and brash... plus a little unsteady on long runs...
Damn, I was about to do my own while I waited. There are way more steeplecabs than I thought, though.
It's cool seeing the GE E50C on here. Never saw them but they were operated near where I grew up in SE Ohio. Ran coal dug up by the Big Muskie (largest ever dragline excavator) down to a conveyor line that brought it the rest of the way to the now demolished AEP Muskingum River electric plant.
The PRR had a few similar units. E44’s but upgraded and reclassified to E50a I believe. One was even upgraded further, an E60a, but Conrail’s abandonment of electrification killed off any other conversions iirc
@russellgxy2905 The E50C was basically the same platform but upgraded internals. The unique part was that they were fully autonomous. The two ran as shuttles pulling coal trains from the mines to a nearby power plant. If I remember correctly, they used a series of optical sensors to pick up track side signals to tell it where they were at on the line and what to do.
Love em' small n' compact review.
Now we need MUs either electric/diesel MUs
5:41 PRR GG1: "The Giga Chad and Magnum Opus of Electric Locomotives"
1:38 Got me some Pat vibes a infamous Irish shunter made out of scrap parts.
I've seen the MILW EF-1 in person.
I volunteer occasionally at the Western Railway Museum, and I was waiting that whole video just to see if you included the Sac Northern steeple cabs. Glad you did!
first comment and we are all ready to see this on veterans day
also blud forgot the Canadian National Class Z-4-a
Alp-44 deadline is 🔥. Was there in December and it was a truly mesmerizing experience. My favorite locos at such easy access, and you can go in them…
3:56 you mean Sacramento?
Imagine if Cowl Unit did “Every British Rail Locomotive reviewed in 10 words or less” or “Every American multiple unit reviewed in 10 words or less”
Either one of them would be interesting!
@@SleepTrain456the amt mr-90s would be the maple syrup variant of emus.
@@marcleslac2413 Indeed, it would be! And speaking of old EMUs from Montreal, the MR-63 of the Montreal Metro would be the maple syrup variant of the Parisian MP 59.
Thanks for the comment!
@@SleepTrain456 mr-73 would be the jeumont chopper noises
Now, I know what an MR-73 sounds like! Thanks for the comment, @@marcleslac2413!
For a video I found about the MR-63's "Jeumont sound": th-cam.com/video/tEa-zzlhn2Q/w-d-xo.html
For a video of the _AZUR's_ sound (which I have heard compared to the "Jeumont sound"): th-cam.com/video/9MOgkTJrvyU/w-d-xo.html
B&O mentioned! Also do you know of any places where i can find more info about their third rail operations? i didnt know they had any attempt into it
6:31 Yes. They did had electric operations however its was short electrified line. Since they didn't have the proper amount of electrified lines they were sent to storage for over 10 years in my opinion NdeM had wasted the potential of these electric engines
this was great. someone really needs to go into the history and mechanics of these, or their lines. There some wild facts about many of these
6:29 As I usually say..
*MANDATED PASSENGER VARIANT*
Does that make the DD2 a "mandated freight variant?"
But in breadbox mode
Do a video of every American Electric or Diesel multiple units described in 10 words or less please.👾
any other locos we need to find to be added on as "DLC" to this?
6:30 LMAO 😂
Thanks for including Canadian locos.
The NdeM E60s ended up going the Black Mesa and Lake Powell railway
I’m going to need a video of the steam engines with pantagraphs.
I’m interested on how you’d do it with rolling line
I'm interested in learning about them too, now that you mention them!
Thanks for the idea!
Would you be able to do something like this with EU locos?
I like these electrics
EMUs next?
Suggestion
Steam locomotive wheel arrangement reviewed in 10 words or less

I agree.
This is the video ever
Can you do ten worlds or less all American narrow gauge steam locomotive classes
I like how our alps in mtl have the horns side by side.
6:36 got me dyin on the floor😂😂😂😂😂😂
My favourite was and still is the MILW EP-3
Iirc the GG1s could for a short period of time when starting a train do overvoltage which meant nearly doubling the power output of the locomotive..

3:52 so Pennsylvanian version to the Crocodile locomotive
When it comes to electric locomotives, it can be said that you have the mandatory Brazilian variation
I want to correct you on something. 3:26 that 25 ton #7 Belonged to the Cornwall Street Railway light and power company, not Montreal Park & island
What about exports?
You forgot the iowa traction railroad boxcab electric locomotive
Yeah
Happy Veterans Day!
"Tight curves in a chunky package" are we still talking about locomotives? 🤣
Where are the mandated passenger variants
What about X2000, Acela, and Avelia Liberty? The high-speed trainsets should count as having locomotives.
I Dare you to do this but with Texas Electric Railway, once you learn, you can never go back
Day 1 of asking cowl unit productions to make a "every southern pacific steam locomotive in ten words or less"...
I love little joes
Cowl Unit Productions has reviewed US electric locomotives. American Electric Locomotives. The GG-1 is the gigachad of the electricified PRR. Wow that was funny.
