Shannon from www.house-improvements.com shows you how to easily remove dirty old carpet. Big tips here include to cut it into smaller pieces to make it easier to carry and dispose of. Be very careful with the tack strips as those little nails are very sharp. Shannon covers carpet removal, underpad, and tack strip removal. Video © 2014 SKS Media.

LoL "those of you on the gangsterous side" 🤣
This guys videos are always good. As a hint: I found my Dremel Ultra Cut with a general purpose blade cut through our heavy carpet like butter. It allowed me to quickly cut it up in two foot squares for easy handling and scored the foam underlayment for easy removal. Never nicked the floor underneath. Took this 78 year old man less than an hour to cut and haul away a 15 foot square room.
Thank you so much for this video I'm a single 25 year old with a carpet in my living room and bed room that I'm going to be tearing up! I'm feeling great about it and appreciate you going step by step in this video!
Extremely helpful! Thanks so much for posting this. Saved me fingertips and untold brain damage, especially cutting the carpet into sections.
i watch a lot of DIY videos and Shannon's are the best. instructions are super clear, very organized. He makes the projects look like super easy to do. Thanks for all the videos!!! keep em coming!
Already tore out my carpet and am fortunate to live in a place where the trash men take all the scraps, but I needed help taking the trim out so I can redo the walls. This was a big help. Thanks.
Thanks Shannon. This is totally out of my comfort Zone but done easily thanks to you
best builder i've learned so much from this amazing guy. +100
Thanks Shannon for your video -- this is just what I needed to know. I liked the tips about the gloves, and trash bin for the staples and tac-strips. Excellent points about cutting the carpet to reduce weight -- I will use your idea to ensure it fits the back of my car so I can take the old carpet to the dump.
Thank you! I'm doing this on my RV, what a job!! All those tight corners where carpet was wedged under closet structure, cabinets, and glued in at times. Nice to see what tools you are using and your technique.
Our carpet was installed after the trim was installed. So we do not need to remove the trim, but the builder glued the perimeter of carpet to the subloor so it will be hard to remove. That is a great idea to cut the carpet. Most municipalities require people to cut carpet into thin strips or the garbage men will not collect it.
great demo Shannon. thanks!
another great video shannon!
Great video. Thanks for putting it up
I really appreciate all of your videos! One day I would love to have a beer with ya!
you gave me life..lol
Im definitely going to try to remove my master bedroom carpet and do the hardwood floor.
This video is great! thank you for putting this up.
You are organized and practical
Very informative. Thanks
Explained easily. Thank you ☺

Awesome video and videos you've posted, very helpful. Also, very good job on the safety tips. You've got my subscription.
Thanks! Stay tuned, we've got more videos on the way.
thank for the video
Not only are you a great mentor Shannon, but you are the nicest looking guy I've ever seen - an added bonus. A handsome instructor. To sir, with love.
Simmer down - it was a compliment. I met my love at a grocery store - and that was not a dating site either.
Now I believe I can do it myself if I can figure where to get rid of it.
I have "dirty old carpet". Helpful video, thanks.
Thanks for watching Chad
Great video please don't change your still of recording...Keep up the good work!
Hi Shannon. I removed the carpet in the upstairs bedroom. There are 2 metal straps attached to the subfloor from the outer wall side about 3 feet apart. Can I remove them to install hardwood flooring?
very helpful
flipping a house at the moment, it was wall to wall carpeting. I did the exact same procedure you used here. luckily when we ripped the carpet up it exposed beautiful hardwood floors, not in need of refinishing.
That is an awesome find for a flip house. $$$$
Thank you so much for this video .how can we install dryer and washer in apartments ?
mirooo Vuujj
how would the foam be attached to a concrete floor? glue? How's the removal of that? Thanks
Great video, thank you
you're welcome
Quick note, if you are removing very old carpet or carpeting from a house with animals, you may want to use a facial mask. We took up our carpeting up a few years ago and found lots of dusty (deteriorating) materials under the carpet that became airborne.
very good point, thanks
Hey Shannon Would you be at all open to a side project if it didn’t interfere with what you are currently doing?
I'm currently finishing my basement right now (Mudding currently) and your videos have been a HUGE help Shannon!
Will you also be doing a video on installing carpet at some point? We have an concrete floor in the basement and we really want to warm it up with some carpet, but I've never installed it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Keep up the great work!
I do not install my own carpet, so it is not likely that I will be doing a video about it anytime soon, sorry
Not a problem! Just keep up the awesome work and I'm sure I'll find someone to help me out!
Great video
+corey lambert thanks.
never rolled up a body but sure! haha
If I have hardwood floors (which will be sanded & refinished) underneath a rug I'm removing, how worried should I be about cutting the hardwood with the utility knife?
+Jim Bond Ya try not to cut it. Have someone hold the carpet up a bit while you cut or roll it up in one piece.
Very informative video Shannon. Quick question though. I'll be removing carpet from a bedroom and replacing it with 7mm laminate flooring. Instead of removing the underlay like you did in the video, can I keep it down and just install laminate flooring over it?
No you can not install laminate flooring over this type of foam underlay. Carpet underlay is too thick and spongy for laminate, the laminate would not stay together while walking on it with this under it.
HouseImprovements ok, thanks a lot Shannon!
when removing any type of flooring like carpet, laminate wood, tile, etc - do you have to remove baseboards? If so, why ?
No. You only remove baseboards if you want new ones. You can put trim\quarter round around existing baseboards if you want. Removing baseboards is not mandatory in most cases.
What if the baseboard is a good, thick , wood that has been sealed, and cocked really tight to wall? We haven't decided if we are replacing the thick rug with a new one; or going with hardwood flooring. Do you remove baseboard if going with hardwood? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and will save me $550.00 that the company will charge to remove the carpet. Thank you for the tutorial. Do you have any other video of how to remove a good baseboard that will be reused?
don't really have a video for that but usually all you can do is cut the caulking joint and then pry off baseboards carefully. It is not always fun. If you do not want to remove it and are going with hardwood, then you could leave the baseboard ,lay the hardwood and install shoe mould or cove or some other kind of trim at the bottom of the base to cover the edge of the new floor.
TY for your reply
+HouseImprovements I was going to tear out carpet on my second floor. There is hardwood underneath on the entire second floor (decent too, not sure why they would put a carpet over it. How much problem would it be if I just leave the baseboard/molding on? My goal is to just clean up the hardwood underneath stick with that. FYI, there is hw underneath the carpet on the entire second floor.
You can , you may need to install an extra trim piece to cover the gap where the carpet used to be.
Great! Thx!
What is that tool you're using?
red window bar??
does removing carpet always require you to remove the baseboards?
In most cases yes, usually the carpet is being pinched down by the baseboards.
What red tool remover did you use ? Where can I buy one ☝️ great job by the way
amzn.to/389CGc0
I only wish I saw this before ripping my carpet up and cutting myself among other issues.
Is he using a hive tool?
+Tony G That is a Richards red flat bar
Ripping up carpet is easy. You can't mess up.
One carpet that would not be able to be resale in Tijuana :(
You DONT have to pull the baseboards,,are you nuts?? Pull the cpt and lay it over and cut it FROM the back in three foot wide pieces. Roll uo and tape it into handy rolls
Don't forget proper footwear as always!
I like your videos, but you gotta start editing some things for time....
Tittlesnhizmouf, and we really need to edit your grammar. LOL
