I used your video on removing baseboards and removed them all on my main floor and entryway in preparation for new flooring installation. I didn't break any! I am 65 years old and not DIY skilled at all, and am very proud of myself. :) Thanks so much Shannon! I love your no nonsense, clear directions and tips! Next, I'll remove my carpet, with your help.
I'm in your camp. I am preparing to remove the carpet from the staircase. I will be staining the stairs after all the cleaning and sanding in places. We can do it! Thanks to Shannon.
Oh hun, thank you. I'm an old 48 yo single mom in England. Iv got to remove my stair carpet. It's been there since the 60's. Replacing it with a runner. To keep costs down, as I'm getting a pro in to fit me new stairs n landing carpet, I'm doing all the hard work. Iv painted bannisters etc. Now to lift the old carpet n paint some more. Your video has shown me, I don't have to be scared to remove it. Thank u xxxx
Thank you so much. I’m trying to renovate my parents house and I was scared that I was doing something wrong and you just showed me exactly what to do and I appreciate you more than you know.
Thank you for this very clear and dummy proof video! I’m removing my very old carpet off my stairs tonight and will be having laminates installed on them. Hopefully my removal is as easy as your video lol. I’m praying my carpet wasn’t glued down
3 years ago I removed the carpet from a large staircase and I have to say it’s one of the worst jobs I had ever done. They went staple crazy when they put the carpet in. Every inch had 2 or 3 staples. Hellish job getting them all out. Thanks for the video Shannon.
I'll take a hard, nasty job over an 11x20 basement w a cat p*ss rug the sellers hid!! Still better than paying God knows how many thousands to get rid of it, though.
Thank you brother! just watched your video before removing carpet from my stairs. wonderful content, you are doing great service to the society, as this is also imp for us to uplift each other human being.
Thanks....your video was helpful. My husband removed carpeting on basement steps. I helped take out carpet staples too. Small wood chise and pliersl remove small staples. We will sand and repaint. You made us feel more confident with your easy directions. 😊👍
Thank you you are the best out of the 45 removal of carpets here you know how to do a video he got a good voice to get to the point thank you so much you are really good
I wish I had watched your video first because other videos I watched didn't mention tack strips. I didn't know what they were after I pulled the carpet and padding off of one step. Thanks for this video.
You video on how to remove carpet on stair is very useful to me and I’ve learned lots of information on how to do it. Can you please share me video on how to install a laminate or a vinyl plank to a stair?
We’re buying a home and the stairs are carpeted, rust color lol. Don’t what the last person was thinking there but anyways. Thank you for this video, I work from home and I’m wanting to get a lot done with this place and this video about the stairs helped out so thank you.
We have stairs going down the steps to our basement. I’ve asked my husband to take the carpeting out now for the last six months. Guess who’s going to be doing that now? Me. Thank you for this video is very helpful!
If you could make this a series to finish the stairs, that would be awesome. That is on my to do list in my current home as I am slowly getting rid of carpet. Thank you.
Thanks for your video! We bought a house and the carpet on the stairs was installed in a way that the edge is rounded causing lots of slipping down the stairs. Pulling it all up and installing individual treads.
Thank you 😊 so much for a straight forward easy to follow instructional video. Just what I need just plain straight forward English, nothing fancy or showboating.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏾😉
The ease at which you took out those carpet grips makes me so jealous. The people who installed the ones in ly staircase really wanted those suckers to STAY. IN.
Thank you Great job. Do You have any video about how to install stairs hardwood after the carpet removed Please? Because I want to replace my house stairs carpet with hardwood
I have the carpet pulled off my stringers & am wanting to paint them & the risers (vinyl will be installed on treads only, with noses). There was glue used for the stringers, really rough. Do I just sand it off or should I use some sort of glue remover? Thank you in advance!
Hey Shannon, my question is if i have squeaking coming from underneath the stairs, before i blindly start to stop squeak by using screws from the top can you share how the stairs might have been built. Is there a joist or something in the middle of the stairs which i can track and screw into to stop squeaking?
Great info...Question Please. How would you avoid cutting the wood stairs under the carpet (with that first cut with your utility knife) as our stairs has a nice looking stained pine which we would like to expose again. Thanks for your help in advance. Phil Jersey Shore Area
Hi I was wondering if you wanted to leave the stairs as is how do you cover up the osb on the back so it looks better? If you wanted to paint it or not. Tfs
This video is great! I plan on removing the carpet from my basement stairs and I would like to simply patch the holes lefts from the staples and paint the stairs. What product do you use to fill the holes? Also, can I just prime and paint this type of stair or do you have to change everything? I am not sure if my idea is ok. Thank you!
You can patch the stairs with a wood filler and sand ,prime and paint if you like. Many of these types of stairs are not really pretty because they were built to be covered up but usually with some patching, caulking and sanding you can make then look pretty good.
They make small sanders. Not expensive. Depending on how rough they are, get a coarse one or two and a very fine one or steel wool. Buy paint with primer and you'll have to seal it. Youre not using regular wall paint, I don't think...not sure which one. Unless you flop down some non slip things to prevent wear and slippage. Then the sides won't wear as fast.
Any tips on filling the gap between the stringer and tread? We want to paint, but there are gaps on both sides (about 1/2" each) that the carpet edges were stuffed into and we don't know what to do to fill it so it's smooth and won't show. Help!
At my old house that was under a gut renovation I noticed that by the stairs on the bottom the guys missed a spot of carpeting when they were removing it. I'm not sure if that was intentional or if it was just too difficult to remove.
@@HouseImprovements thanks, but can I ask why? I removed the carpets today ironically and they were in really good condition. Assuming it would need just stapling back if we keep the same underlay??
Hey Shannon, do you have another affiliate link for the red pry bar? The specific one you linked is out of stock but at first glance, it looks like there's more than a few others that are white labeled under different brands. While I'm at it, do you have a link for an olfa knife? Replenishing my tool kit and want to use your links.
In this link for the forum you will find our Amazon affiliate links for .ca or .com you can use either one to order anything you want. The red coloured bars are the ones I prefer there are a few sizes. I believe the ones I use the most are 10". I also like any of the Olfa knives with the 3/4" blades. www.house-improvements.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4565

Try Vice grips and a very thin screwdriver. Less damage, I think.
Thank you so much for such a fine and clear demonstration.
Thank you very much for the tutorial! I'll be doing this tomorrow for my mother!
Thank you Great job. Do You have any video about how to install stairs hardwood after the carpet removed Please? Because I want to replace my house stairs carpet with hardwood
Awesome video man, made it look so easy. Now I'm going to tackle mine
Thanks for this video!
I am super nervous about what Ill find if I pull off the carpet, but maybe I will be surprised!
Great video!! We’ll be tackling this in our next rental!
Thank you, Shannon! I hope to also tackle this soon!
I watched a few of these and this one was the most helpful. Thanks.

thank for the video, brother
So incredibly helpful!!! Thank you!!!
Hi ! Would you consider tapping in the staples instead of pulling them out or you would advise against it and why? Thanks !
you could pound them in if you like if you are not leaving the surface exposed after wards
This was great. Thank you so much!

cut out near the end of the tread carefully .

Hi I was wondering if you wanted to leave the stairs as is how do you cover up the osb on the back so it looks better? If you wanted to paint it or not. Tfs
A thin layer of smooth plywood or MDF would clean it up.
Thank you soo much for this tutorial

I'm cheap and lazy. Going over all of it with that nice Costco waterproof flooring laminate stuff that clicks together...it really IS waterproof, too!
Great video 😊, now need to know how to sand and paint them 🙈 lol
You can do it!

Great videos Shannon!
Not to be a negative Nancy, As a flooring guy, this is not the easy way of doing it, Cool that you do video's and try to help people keep it Sir.
Then what’s the EASY way?
Thanks Shannon

Wood filler and then sand smooth

Likely too hard to get out?
Nothing vice grips and gloves can't fix. Look out for rusty nails! Get your tetanus shot!
👍👍look forward to the next one.
Thank You🥀✨️
That was very informative.
Very helpful 👍🏾
Does this technique apply if we want to reuse the same carpets? Since these were done partially in the video..
The carpet will be usually unusable after removal from stairs
@@HouseImprovements thanks, but can I ask why? I removed the carpets today ironically and they were in really good condition. Assuming it would need just stapling back if we keep the same underlay??
Thanks for sharing!
Good video right there. I’m gunna let the carpet guys do that for me after seeing this.
If the entire house has hardwood throughout (117y.o. Craftsman) what might we expect of the stairs? Thank you.
I'd think hardwood, too, with some holes to fill from nails...wood filler would work. Buy darker color. I had an old house.

whoever installed the one I just took out was very staple happy, like holy crap
They tend to be very full of staples!
@@HouseImprovements 20 staples each for the upper and lower part of each step. I counted😂
I'll pick staples over those horrible tack straps used for concrete ANY day. Staples are easy. Use a shop vac, make sure you got them all.
