    They should have remote manual driving capability, like a racing simulator style setup with a wheel and pedals. Then an employee can remote in and drive it manually to "un-stuck" it. Live stream camera data to them. That would save much more time than a physical dispatch, at least for navigating related issues.

    • @Leuel48Fan
      @Leuel48Fan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@AdelphiaaWoW For sure a possibility, but lots of ways to mitigate this risk. Ofc basic encryption and authentication first, then limit remote driving capability to ~10mph tops, and finally require the user to press and hold a button on the touch screen to allow remote drive. They release it, and like a dead man switch car comes to a safe stop. There are plenty of ways to approach this legitimate concern.

      I thought about this a lot. I think the reason they can't do it, it's because it's illegal. I first thought about possible legal problems when a driver causes an accident from his desk, but I know companies don't care about being sued about damages or worse, people losing their lives in an accident. I think it's because it's illegal to not have some form of sentient being that drives the car. But Im sure they're lobbying as hard as they can to not need some third party road assistance anymore.

    The USPS guy could have just opened the exit gate. That was the entire problem. The exit gate was closed, and the Waymo car wasn’t going to leave through a gate clearly marked “no exit”. It was looping around and the navigation was going insane trying to find a usable exit gate but there was none to be found. I’m not going to blame Waymo for this.

      A human driver could have figured this out, so this should be the expectation for autonomous driving. The reason that engineering professors would say for so many decades that autonomous driving was a problem not likely to be solved soon, was all this complexity. Getting a car to stay in a lane, and such, is not "problem solved"; it's not even the start of the long tail of myriad situations. It's either better than humans, or not.

      But that whole idea collapses the second you need an entire team of humans employed to drive the goddamned cars around anyway. I imagine this is why Tesla is holding back on the rollout of their robotaxi service. They'll probably put it in the terms of service that by enabling Robotaxi and allowing your car to generate income, you're also required to have a phone number for them to text when a nearby Tesla gets stuck. lol

    strange that they couldn't just nudge it out of the parking lot and let it continue on its own. I don't understand, how could your trip be outside the mapped area? the waymo would have taken a slightly different route? that seems strangely right. it's also suss that they were able to show up with a crew in 2 minutes, suggesting that this is not uncommon. they are ever ready for it. I don't understand why they can't just remote control nudge it forward until it can find its way again instead of a guy jumping onboard for 20 minutes. also it pickup you up on the us postal parking lot? it sounded like the dispatcher said it was not supposed to be out there. like it left the map to get you. did you kidnap it? :)

      Why did Kevin call for Waymo from a private, gated parking lot? Why didn’t Kevin ask support to stop the vehicle right away instead of letting it drive out of control around a lot with a lot of employees walking around doing work? Why didn’t Kevin force some sort of emergency shutdown of the car by attempting to open the door or something? The supervisor is just doing his job to look after his staff while some out of control car is roaming around the work area. If the car is glitched, how is he supposed to know it won’t glitch out and hit a USPS employee as they step out of their mail truck? Everyone, not just the supervisor, was being rude here.
