As far as characters go, Darla is right there with Faith and Cordelia in my book. Sure wouldn't want Darla in my life, but I do really love her in the Buffyverse.
Who knew that the actress who'd portrayed a vampire minion so early and so very briefly in Buffy would return here only three years later with such an impactful encore performance! Brava Julie Benz!

The underground place is actually a water plant. Everything was rerecorded as everything created an incredible echo. It was a really cool location.
Before I moved to Los Angeles, two of my fellow Bronzers who lived in Kansas City were also looking to move and asked me to join them. They and a third friend ended up finding a plCe without me. They brought the person they moved in with to the third Buffy PBP. Elizabeth Röhm came to the party among a bunch of others from Buffy and Angel. The guy who asked me to move with them walks up, "My roommate just left with Elizabeth Röhm." They ended up getting (briefly) engaged.
I almost got fired during this episode. I brought a disc with "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight" on it for Favid to learn. I gave it to an AD. I didn't get their name. They never gave it to him. The look on his face when he was singing wasn't acting. He didn't know the song. Luckily, I didn't have that problem again. I delivered the disc while they were on location at the house where Angel found Darla. I was also at the hotel in Universal City, where she ran out into the sunlight. I was on set a lot for this one because David Greenwalt directed it. My job was basically his PA, when he was directing and the writers' LA when he was in the office. I really liked Darla/Julie Benz.
Years later, while Elizabeth Röhm was on Law and Order, she was the celebrity spokesperson for The Epilepsy Foundation of New York, replacing John McEnroe. My dad was on the Board. I can't remember if he ever met her. I know he met John.

Ouch. The dynamic with Darla here is so fascinating. He’s not Angelus, but after being toyed with so much by her and Wolfram & Hart he enjoys telling her she never made him happy and hurting her feelings. He actually reminds me of how Angelus was with Buffy after they slept together, making her think it meant nothing. You can see why his darker impulses as a man became the monster.
Yes. Angel IS an emotional sadist. When he has a soul he expresses it differently, but it is still there. You can see it in his combat banter and in how he talks to people he doesn't like. But in this episode, the way he was smiling while he was taunting Darla, he liked causing her emotional distress. That was his emotional sadism coming out to play.

Definitely a line that cuts deep, but it isn't Gods forgiveness Angel fights for. It's his own.
I always love watching Gunn outsmarting the detective in two seconds straight. 😂

I'm pretty sure soulless demons CAN feel perfect happiness without a soul. When Angel said he couldn't because he had no soul, I think he was just referring to himself because he was an extra kind of evil. When I first watched this, I was shocked that they brought Darla back as human. That means she has a soul, which I thought was a mistake on Wolfram and Hart's part because I didn't understand the whole plan yet. It took me way longer than it took you to decode this episode, but you did it! Impressive! They clearly brought her back as human to torment him and make him dark. But if they would have brought her back as a soulless vampire, Angel would just dust her again and there would be no point.

It is interesting that Jules mentioned that Kate would have learned of Darla's name and stories from vampire research. It's perhaps a bit of a plot hole! Angelus and Darla ravaged Europe for 145 years from 1753 to 1898. Then, it is a bit unclear as to what happened after Angelus was given the soul.
It really did make me wonder! If she found out so much info about Angelus, then perhaps.... 🤔
@@julesreactsshe might have been able to find only information on Angel in the US for the most part, I forget what she had dug up initially. But a cop in LA would have a lot better access to American records than to European records, I think.
Kate has difficulty separating Vampire Angel from her father's death at the hands of vampires, and doesn't want to accept that her father was a crooked cop. She's in denial and blaming Angel for things she shouldn't. In a way, if she'd never met him, never found out about the supernatural world, she'd be better off, and her father might still be alive.
@@julesreacts She may have heard of Darla, but not seen a picture. Also, she is hyper focused on Angel. And lastly, Darla tends to be more of an in the shadows vampire, directing others to do her dirty work, so there is probably less written about her than there is about Angelus who reveled publicly in the fear he caused in others.

This is an incredible episode on so many levels, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. The Darla storyline is so juicy, I can't wait to see what you think as it unfolds.
Kate's continued distrust of Angel upset me when I first watched it too, but hopefully in time she'll come around.

Man, such a good episode, lots of drama! I'm so happy they realized what an amazing character darla could be to angel and brought her back from her buffy season 1 death. Buffy darla compared to angel darla is like night and day! Looking forward to seeing what developes!

It was more Joss whedon fault for not having things planned out for Darla and Angel backstory, Joss whedon priority was focused on Buffy and Angel more so then Angel and Darla history , Then when spike and Dru joined a season later they got added to Angel and Darla history, So that just goes to show that Angel and Darla history weren't a priority and well planned out at the time of Buffy season 1
Yeah, absolutely! It would be difficult to plan everything back at the beginning. I mean, he may have even thought that it wouldn't get past the first season (I think that's why it sort of wrapped up kinda nicely, just in case!)
@@julesreacts Exactly! That is 💯 percent correct Buffy was a mid season replacement for another show back then according to SMG so there was no guarantee that a season 2 would happen.
The whole soul love business is really unclear in the buffyverse. I forgot what youtuber said it, but their theory was that the concept that demons take over the body and kick out the original host was basically Watcher propaganda. Basically a lie to make it so that if they run into a former friend turned vampire they wouldn't hesitate to kill them before they get attacked.
In this theory turning into a vampire just removes the Super Ego of a person letting the Ego and Id to run free.
This would also make sense as to why Angel says he couldn't feel true love, as he wasn't really a full person, but more of a monster of Id and Ego. The love that they (vampires without a soul) feel is self centered, at best they like making others feel happy only because it makes their ego feel happy knowing that they could make that person feel happy.
Where it gets weird is how Angel and Angelous are almost 2 personalities. This is most likely due to the length in time since angel was with a soul, thus making the act of losing the Soul (super ego) akin to what it is like for most vampires when they are first turned.
Darla?! Human?! And now working with Wolfram and Hart. The war is about to begin…
Angelus: [about Drusilla] We'll turn her into one of us. Killing is so merciful in the end, isn't it? The pain is ended.
Darla: But to make her one of us?... She's a lunatic.
Angelus: Eternal torment.
Angel as Angelus was really evil in more ways.
Always love the flashback episodes in the Buffyverse.
I just have to say that your editing is nothing short of amazing. I'm willing to bet that anyone who has never seen a Buffy or Angel episode can watch your videos and still be able to follow the storyline. Most reactors I've encountered are all over the place with their editing and often leave me with a headache and unable to get through the entire video.
Also, while I'm here I want to thank you for not indulging in a pet peeve of mine, which is the endless self promoting most do for the first few minutes of their videos, when simply leaving that information in the description would suffice.
A lot of TH-camrs out there could learn a lesson or two from you.

For me, one of he best lines in the episode was :I saw her.... right there, between the clowns and the big talking hot dog!" I think Wolf, Ram, and Hart have missed the point of "true happiness." With Buffy, there was love, and friendship along with the passion. That is different from when he and Darla were together, where there was rebellion and anger. He will never be able to find true happiness again, until he finds someone like Buffy.
Julie Benz's acting has improved so much compared to Buffy season 1. Darla was so annoying back then, now she's amazing. 🤩 Also I agree with Lindsey about Darla having her own series: I would totally sign up for a Darla spin-off show. 😅

I mean Darla wasn't a big focus back in season 1 of Buffy , So it's not fair to say she wasn't as good an actor , She did what she was supposed to do in her brief appearances in Buffy , It wasn't well thought out on Joss whedon side to keep Darla alive and show the backstory/History with her and Angel because it was about Buffy and rightfully so.
Angel got to express his emotional sadism in this episode. See how he smiled while he tormented Darla. He enjoyed hurting her (emotionally). Darla wasn't wrong about that darkness coming from somewhere.
His dark side actually really concerns me! I'm reminded of that talk with Faith he had (not saying too much as I don't like to talk about one show in the comments of another!) but... I'm worried 🙀

Suprisingly the duckings came in and.sat.down in single file.and munched on their popcorn relatively.calmly. until Darla showed.up. then it was.boos and hisses, duck hisses are almost as bad as goose hisses, and a random calling.her a poopoo head. I think they did learn some at that school, just.the constant comments about.vampire hunting was too much.

Funny thing is that even Angel doesn't really know Darla. He's only ever known her as a vampire, so in a sense, he's never even met the real Darla. He's assuming that her soul will bother her, but there's no guarantee there.

A great episode, especially so far as advancing the plot is concerned. An all star cavalcade, almost.
If I remember correctly, I don't think Cordelia agreed that she looked "amazing" in that little outfit.🤣
And... I know it's been a while, and she is insane, but no love for poor Drusilla!?🤣
Kate has totally lost the plot. She was running hot and cold, hot and cold again, until her father's incident - she felt responsible, mainly owing to their relationship woes, and instead of seeing things as they really are, she puts all her problems on Angel - she has shoved all her regrets and anger on him, and now anyone who defends him. She has made herself one of those victims she gets so self righteous over, even whilst knowing that the actual facts are all in Angel's favor - Great question by Gunn, that whole scene with Wesley, Cordelia, Gunn, and Kate was excellent.
Angel has warned Darla,. Now what path does she take, and who will she hold responsible - Angel, or Lindsey? Who knows. Darla is as obsessed as Drusilla is crazy.
I look forward to the continuation of this confrontation. It has great potential!😅
