Misinterpreting one of Cordelia's visions, Angel tries to help a pregnant woman and accidentally kills her demon protector. Angel tries to fulfill the dead warrior's mission and escort her to a tribunal to protect the woman's unborn baby. When the woman runs off, a desperate Angel visits a demon karaoke bar named Caritas and seeks help from the club owner - "the Host" - who can read the destiny of anyone who sings before him.

Angel's identification with the demon he killed is very real, very touching ("He was a soldier, like me.") He makes a point of knowing his name, and it's such a quietly beautiful moment 10:30 when Angel finds his small Buddhist shrine and lights a candle there.
I believe that Cordelia is in an acting class, not rehearsing a play she's been cast in.

A great opener to S2 the show in Judgment. 'The Host' ( as he is known at this point ) making Angel sing a terrible rendition of Mandy by Barry Manilow just painfully funny. The look on the Demons faces is hilarious listening to it. A touching scene at the end with Angel visiting Faith in prison. Great to see Gunn on the team too a super addition to the team.
All true. Still, I always will miss Doyle and Kate, or rather the addition she could have been. (Law & Order, blech...)

Many good things here, much of it building on the "family" theme of the previous. Cordelia - doing a much better job acting than the last time we saw her, and Wesley - It's been a long while but "treble 20"? Isn't that like a triple triple? - Great score! It was good to see them drop everything to get to family matters.😊
Another "growing" episode, as they pick up, or solidify relations with, outliers, they can depend on for help, and information.

Nice outro. The end piece of outtakes was excellent.Two extra things I really liked in this one - Cordelia's little smile, at 17:40, at Wesleys realization, and Angel checking in with Faith - they have great chemistry - both seem very much at peace with who, and what they are.

Supposed to get 2-3 inches of rain. Doesn't look like it though, but that can change. I was sort of hoping to see my buddy,🐿 out strolling around, with his umbrella, but he'll be snuggled away, rocking away in the tree top, dreaming of large walnuts, and tasty spring flowers, by the time it gets here.😉

The alpacas were totally amazed that you can go somewhere and sing songs, now they are on me to take them. Unfortunately they found my Facebook page and were watching me when I used to do that. Karaoke has come back to haunt me.
This is a tough one for me in retrospect. I originally hated the idea of The Host and his karaoke bar thing, but that's sort of how Joss knew Andy Hallett, who plays The Host. But then I met Andy. And he was one of those people where, you meet him and immediately, you are friends. He was a truly wonderful person. He died of a heart defect 15 years ago last month at 33.
Andy grew up in and around Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and actually went to school with my cousin who moved here to LA shortly after Andy passed.
I call March the Month of Suck because stating on Feb 26th, I lost my brother-in-law's Uncle, my father on March 12th, my Uncle Bill on March 24th, and Andy on March 29th. In 2013, my dad's oldest full sister passed on March 13th. The only thing that was good to come out of March 2009 was on the day my Uncle Bill died, Alyson Hannigan celebrated her 35th birthday by giving birth to her and Alexis' first child, daughter Satyana. I, too, was born on my mother's birthday.
I have very little memory about filming this episode for some reason. I pretty much only remember the final aired version of this episode.
Note about spoilers: At least one other reactor complained the name of the Host (as he is called in the credits) is a spoiler, until it's revealed on-screen. (I don't know if Ms. Jules will care one way or another, or if her previous exposure to popular culture is sufficient to make her care about it. But take note, please.)

The Angel theme song is called Sanctuary, so the feelings of peace it invokes in you aren't odd at all. You should listen to the full song by Darling Violetta, which has vocals too. 🎧
Right off the bat, you get to meet my favourite character of the whole show, who for now shall be known simply as 'The Host'. A green-skinned demon with the voice of an angel, who can read your soul when you sing and who runs a karaoke bar safe haven for demons - what a genuinely original and entertaining premise. Rest in peace to Andy Hallet, who played The Host. Yet another young actor who passed away far too soon.
It's interesting how both Buffy Season 5 and Angel Season 2 start off on a pretty positive note. It really is cool seeing Cordy and Wesley jump into action at the beginning, you can really see how Cordy's experience in the finale changed her.
A great story in its own right, and an excellent way to start the season, not least of which is because we got to hear Angel/David sing. Let's just hope the team find a new office soon.

The Angel theme is the reason I started watching the show in the first place, so I totally get why you find it alluring and comforting! 😊🎵🎶
I had the tv on for noise one weekend afternoon, only half-listening to it, and suddenly there was this beautiful cello playing, which made me look up to see what it was. And then the rest of the theme kicked in, and I was like, "Okay, you've got my attention. What is this show? That was really cool." 😆🤣 One hour of watching the pilot episode later... I was IN. 😄
It's great how the showrunners have managed to change the fact that David Boreanaz can neither sing nor dance into an advantage.

Angel picked up speed much quicker than Buffy did. Joss had learned enough in his first three Buffy seasons to make a better product by the time he started Angel.

Oh really like Merle. I enjoy the Lizard Demon that is singing "I'm so excited". They are exactly the same species as the one that was so evil and so mean in the Cage? Arena? Gladiator? episode. Cause that just makes it funnier.
He doesn't dance and he doesn't sing.
Poor Angel. This is pretty unfair for him and his team.

This episode did remind me of the "Dancing" episode as well! David Boreanaz is actually not bad as a dancer in real life. I can't speak to his singing though, as I have never seen him sing. However, this episode also raised a few questions for me... was that an immaculate conception baby? What did the mother mean that the baby would be a herald or Joan of Arc? I like that Gunn is now part of the team as well, and yes, the characters have shown a lot of growth, and still have room to grow as they continue to learn that not all demons are necessarily bad! This was reflected in the part where Wesley is describing all the horrible traits of a demon and suggesting it would never be able to change overnight to become a guardian type -- then realizing that he could have been talking about Angel!! Also, Christian Kane, who plays Lindsey, usually plays tough guys in TV series and movies. One of my favorite roles of his was Second Hand Lions where he plays a younger version of Robert Duvall's character. (A charming movie!!) Also, he comes out in a few tv series.... Leverage, and the Librarians! Oh! And having Faith in the episode was a great touch! She also is growing as a person! (In her younger years, she would have killed her attacker!) Looking forward to your reactions for the next episode!!

I see this as a little similar to BtVS S2E1, except Angel and the team get so tunnel focused Angel makes a big mistake and Buffy in S2E1 is more about the mistakes due to "issues" over having died. It's a light similarity, but I think it makes a small parallel nonetheless.

You can still get away with alternating order for AS3 and BS6. Though BS6 two-part premiere is combined into one episode (like during broadcast and on DVD).

In the UK the watch order didn't change with the network. It was always Buffy followed by Angel throughout all the seasons and worked fine 😊

@@Smido83 My assumption was that the original message is referring to something that Joss Whedon fans often refer to - the way that he'll lure you in to loving the characters before eventually doing something heartbreaking to them. We really don't get a lot of "Joss is such a terrible person that no-one should ever watch his shows" around here - I mean, this reactor has got to S5 Buffy and S2 Angel by now, so it's obvious that we are enjoying the journey by this point, whatever anyone may or may not think about the writer/producer. Anyone who had a problem with that would have dropped off to watch something else I would think.
I can't help but ask -- were Wesley and Cordy actually needed for that intro smash-the-mirror-kill-the-demon sequence? 😛
hold on to your seat Jules, cause if you thought season one was good, then you'll love this season, Wolfram and Hart have plans, Angel is gaining allies, and everyone is more dedicated to the job, so much I could reveal but I won't, I don't want to rob you of, nor lose the experience of seeing you see it all for the first time.

Good reaction judgement is a good episode
One possible reading is that the Powers sacrificed the woman's protector because he would have failed where Angel would succeed. They sacrificed a soldier to save her and her baby.

If that's the case, why not send Cordelia a clearer vision and sacrifice nobody? I think the sacrifice was just a mistake. My guess is that for the PtB, sending Cordelia visions is like making a phone call with really bad reception. They probably send the whole thing, context and all, but Cordelia only gets bits and pieces of what they send.
I like Barry Manilow's version a lot more than Angel's, and I bet I'm not alone.

The one thing that bothers me in this episode is in the opening scene when Angel walks out after killing the demon, there's a clear and huge reflection of him in the mirror.
I've noticed a couple of discrepancies so far but I try not to look too closely 😅
I just watched this episode on Passion of the Nerd's Buffy Guide, and this episode was originally filmed to be cropped later, removing David's reflection, but they kept this aspect ratio. There's even another moment at the gym where you can see David just awkwardly standing while Wesley and Cordelia are walking in the distance.

Lorne. One of my favorites on Angel. It was heart-breaking when 5 years after Angel ended, the actor who played him-Andy Hallett-- died of heart disease at only 33. So sad.
