  • In this video we will break down everything you need to know about two amazing hikes in Madeira. We hiked these two trails, located in the Queimadas Forest Park, that follow the PR9 levada in February 2023. We were blown away by how spectacular this trail was.
Walking through several waterfalls, looking out over the vast valleys and encountering the many tunnels along the way was a lot of fun and hugely rewarding.

The Inferno gorge alone makes this hike very special to me. My dad thought he saw a 'demonic grinning face' in a rock formation there. I will keep going back until I find it. ;-)

Let us know if you do! We didn’t see any evil spirits in the rocks, but that sounds spooky 👻

Hey nice video! Do you know why there was not any water in the first spot? I will be in Madeira in two weeks and I really wanted to do this trail

Couldn’t say for sure, it was raining a lot while we were there but still no water falling over the two caldeiraos. I’d still highly recommend it even if there is no water.
If you do go, please share whether there was water!

Can anyone recommend any levadas we can do from funchal. We can get bus to them but not by car as we're not hiring a car? We are in our 50s but quite fit so just want to experience 1 or 2.

Regrettably most of the Levadas are not near where people live, so getting a bus directly to a trailhead is tough. I spent some time looking into this for you and didn’t see anything that jumped out.
However, you can still enjoy this hike - you can take the 56 bus to Santana (about an hour from Funchal) and then take a taxi the rest of the way. It’s busy enough in the summer that you should have no difficulty in getting a taxi back to the bus stop for your return journey. The staff on site at Parque Florestal das Queimadas should also be able to help call one for you if needed.

    What’s the wildlife like

For this hike we saw none. Madeira has no rodents, no nasty biting bugs, no native mammals to speak of. Just birds.
