Tim,I was a decorator for 50 years and If we had a lot of doors to paint, we would use a mini roller to prime and undercoat (and not lay off,) and then we would use the mini roller for the finish coat and sometimes lay off with a brush depending on the type of timber, door etc..Also when I was an apprentice, I was taught to always pour the paint from the back of the tin, so as not to cover up the paint label on the front. It seems that spray equipment has come on leaps and bounds since I first sprayed portaflek in the seventies.Excellent job as always!
Hi, well done, how anybody could of thought that adding an overpanel to this style of door in the past was the way to go is beyond me but that is how it was. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Hi Tim, a tip on those adjustable pliers you use at around 8:40 - 8:45. Don't use em like that, turn them around. You will feel the difference in grip. If you have to squeeze tight and then pull the pliers round you will loose grip due to the pliers wanting to open up. If you squeeze the pliers, then push them round you will increase grip due to the pliers closing for you. (Former plumber here). The doors look great!
any chance you can do a video on how you clean and store the graco. would be nice to see what other people do.Just got an ultramax and a wagner 350M. nice video keep up the good stuff.
Spraying all day long for me , I love my Graco.like you say Tim,where they are going the light is more forgiving , so any touch would not be noticeable, great video mate 👍
Spray. You dedication to finish is unparalleled. Even with the touch up / traditional finish augment. Quicker to take the door off, into the workshop than brush touch up I dislike painting more than sanding though, that bad, so am biased 🙂
I subscribed to this channel after looking at a 400 year old property that needed restoring. Over two weeks, I watched a lot of the videos and bought a new build but still following this along to see where you get to. Will the restoration couple ever become the restored couple? Find out next week...or the week after... or the week after that.... :)
Great job there,i would have been tempted to use a stain blocking primer on the doors just in case of any bleed through or knotting that might occur later on especially with older doors, this basically stops any resins in the natural wood from coming through to the paint finish, water based paints are normally not great at holding this back without a stain block primer, spraying is the way to go i think and beats a brush finish all day long i think
Moving into a new house at the moment, it's a newbuild which im kind of bummed out about, been honing all your knowledge ready to move into an older house xD
Great job and another quality video. Try Paint shed next time. I have long give up on my local trade paint stores charging crazy amounts for mixing trade paint. I feel your pain of carrying on working into the night on your own home.
We have oiled pine doors downstairs but these were so butchered with all the old locks and nails that paint was a better option so we matched it to the other joinery with that colour.
Tim, enjoying your endeavors round the house and especially this episode on the door restoration. Renovating a 1930s house at the minute myself and decided to check behind the plywood cover on the doors to also find the original doors which i'm also going restore rather than skip them! can i ask what colour did you use?
Love the video I have the same sprayer could you please let me know what tips you use for your projects as I seem to struggle to get the same finish as yourself
Quality video tim really enjoyed that, nice set up to get the job done, I was wondering if its possible to spray then put in the brush lines, would have saved a lot of time. I'm so tempted to get a graco sprayer lol 😀
Tim, love your channel, you've been a great source of knowledge and inspiration. I'm just about to do the same job you did here, same Graco, but I am unsure what size tip/tips to use - any advice?
Hi sir I notice you haven’t put any sealer on the wood knots , it can stop the resin bleeding through over time . The product is called as the name suggests knotting . Best wishes and kind regards. 😃👍👍👍
What size spray tip did you use and what pressure did you have the dial set to for the primer and eggshell? I have recently bought a Graco ultra, awesome bit of kit for smaller spray jobs like these 😁
Its not exclusive. !! Many places sell it . Now here is the truth of what it really is . DULUX will set their machines to make a batch. Once the amount is reached for their orders etc .The rest gets put into Albany Tins. Its the same paint . no difference .
Quick question as to why you primed before filling the holes and putting the block in the old lock casing hole? Be good to know if there’s a benefit to this as I would’ve thought you’d want to prime over the filler as well so it’s less likely to show through the finish coat?
wood filler stick better to WOOD .Not paint .And Old doors like this move around a lot when stripped . All the joins Burst after a few months .Only filler to use is "repaircare " with its primer . the classic wood filler/car filler is a bit "meh"
An initial light undercoat shows up where needs filling far better than trying to spot it all first. They are just pin holes. Any larger areas and I would get another coat of undercoat over. 👍
I’d love the choice to use a spray gun at work but far too much over spray as all the doors we do are hung , said that me and my mate can gloss out a 3 bedroom house in under 4 hours ... 1 on the doors 1 on the facings then both do the skirting boards that way you’re not picking up any dirt or dust on your brush doing a full room at a time
The more I see you spraying, the more I like it! EDIT: I just saw the price of the sprayer, I like it less now :) great if you're doing a whole house however.
Great video Tim! What’s the colour you used? Looking really nice! Sprayers are great as I found I’m out when I did my 50 fence panels last year. Not cheap though! Take care. Marc
@@TheRestorationCouple Kool. I spotted it in an earlier video after I posted the question. Then I thought boys and toys. Both impressive strayers and I liked the fact that you went from paint tin to the Graco without messing about trying to get the viscosity right

@@TheRestorationCouple Was just buying paint and I thought check youtube on my phone, it wouldn't surprise me if Tim had replied, and you had lol , thanks very much, top channel
Yeah, just way easier to spot what is needed after it’s undercoated. Often some of the bits you think you need to do are not even visible and on the flip side you will never spot everything first time round.
Wait... did you say just under 100 pounds for a gallon of paint? That's $140ish US... seriously, holy crap thats outrageous! I think the most expensive common paint is less than $50 US... I do not envy that pricing at all!
To be fair that is a premium professional paint, most are far less. I wouldn’t usually bother but wanted a durable finish as they’re doors. Still enough left for a few more doors too so not too bad when you break it down. 👍
Not used this one before but having already scrubbed biro off one from the kids drawing, 🙄 I can confirm the diamond eggshell is very durable! That said, I’ve used Leyland for years with no complaints.
Sad to see you overpay for so many things in England. Same bucket of paint is about $40 English pounds here in Canada. You folks deserve to be treated better. A man of your abilities would make a fortune in Canada. You're very self motivated and great at what you do. I've been a painting contractor for 35 years.
I bought a vintage tool box with 30-40 chisels, the good ones are restored and sharpened, the cheap ones are relegated to opening paint and chipping off paint. Fear not, I do respect my hand tools. 😀

I've actually started to enjoy painting doors and trim since discovering water based gloss. It's a joy to work with.
The method of standing them all with the single piece of wood was genius.
agree. definitely something I'll try myself as well
Never thought it would work as well as it did. Turned out great!

That model of graco ultra will only spray water based products.
You could use BIN 123 which stain blocks, albeit not a well as BIN and cover stain etc.

Tim, give the door a light rub with a wet cloth before brushing, it is a lot easier and gives you more time to work with it 👍

hi i have been watching your video's for a while ... with the sprayer you are useing ... would you ever buy a bigger refill cup the 1.25 litre?
