    Composer & Artist:
    Composer: Alfredo Casella
    Artist: Michele d’Ambrosio piano
    About this Album:
    Alfredo Casella is considered to be the leading representative of the generazione dell’ottanta (generation of the ‘80s): a group of Italian composers born around 1880, including Ottorino Respighi, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Giorgio Gedini and Franco Alfano, who sought to prove that there was far more to Italian music than opera and concentrated primarily on orchestral, chamber and instrumental music. Casella was a controversial and often misunderstood figure - much has been made of his connections with fascism and his decision to remain in Italy under Mussolini - but he was probably just a staunch Italian nationalist who passionately believed in bringing his country’s glorious musical heritage to the fore (he was largely responsible for the rediscovery of Vivaldi’s music in the 20th century).
    This 3CD set brings together Casella’s complete works for solo piano. Spanning a period of over 40 years, the collection charts the development of Casella’s musical language, aesthetic views and pianism (he was also an accomplished pianist and conductor). He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1896 and studied under Fauré, and his early works reflect the influence of his teacher and that of Debussy, whom Casella greatly admired. Works from his middle period - such as the Op.24 Pezzi and the Op.28 Sonatina and the atmospheric and, for Casella, unusually romantic musical poem A notte alta show the composer in much more daring mode, experimenting with form, harmony and all kinds of pianistic techniques. Eventually, in later works such as the Pezzi infantili and Sinfonia, arioso e toccata, Casella reached what he called ‘a more creative stage that is well-defined and clear’, deftly assimilating aspects of the Italian Baroque music that he loved so much in order to find a unique, contemporary voice.

    I've always loved Casella's music. The complex algorithms and structures. The man was a human computer with his music. I can just feel myself getting smarter, every time I listen to his music.

    Thank you again Brilliant Classics. I just found this one. What a collection and a surprise for me not ever heard of this composer, conductor, and his life. What an influence and imaginative impulses Alfredo Casella had.
    These pieces are played passionately by Michele di'Ambrosio.
    With the deepest appreciation and admiration for your tastes.❤️👏👏

    Well, ignorance is not bliss, but it does allow a sense of surprise & delight when new, enjoyable experiences occur. Once more, composer & player new to me, both excellent. However, my life-long ambition to be a real musical snob (quietly, I hope) is dashed by such fine surprises. Credit to BC for wrapping another lesson in humility in such agreeable material. Thanks to all.

    The Sarabande is gorgeous. I love it’s wistful melancholy melodies and glittering cadenzas in the end. I wish Casella had stuck with his early style instead of obsessing over atonality.

    Beautiful compositions! I have never heard of Alfredo Casella until now. This man is a great composer and his "feel-good" melodies make me want to listen to his works forever. And Michele d'Ambrosio has the virtuosity to give justice to Casella's genius. Thank you for uploading this recording!

    Che bella sorpresa ritrovare Michele D'Ambrosio incontrato al concorso di Morcone 1981 o 82 (?) e già promettente e talentuoso giovanissimo pianista che eseguiva con grande sensibilità la Sonata op. 26 n° 2 di Clementi! E ritrovarlo ora pianista affermato che si cimenta in questi bellissimi brani di Alfredo Casella! Complimenti vivissimi! Un caro saluto da Annarita Santagada

    At the crossroads of impressionist creativity and post modernist doldrums. The latter gave Cole Porter an opening to elevate pop music above that of the moribund classical state. It wasn't until the Beatles started using some classical elements that the comatose classical crowd woke up and gradually brought their genre back to life.

    • @anthonypuccetti8779
      @anthonypuccetti8779 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That doesn't make sense. What does post modernist doldrums gave Cole Porter an opening to elevate pop music above that of the moribund classical state supposed to mean? And the Beatles' use of classical elements had no effect on the classical crowd and didn't bring classical music back to life, And how was the classical crowd comatose? Because they weren't listening to Dionysian music and acting like spastic slaves to loud beats like the rock music crowd? Much of the rock music crowd made themselves comatose with their use of alcohol and drugs.
