Watch Scott's eyes around 11:17 it is his reaction to Bill's comments about how simple "free choice" is when it comes to addiction around the 11:10 mark. Dr. Drew either already knew Scott had an addiction or just realized it after Scott spoke and then tried to stick up for Scott.
he stated he had seen him "in the throws of his addiction" so I am guessing he may have been a patient at one point? he did help a lot of celebrities even aside from that reality show
first time I've ever heard him acknowledge he had an eating disorder as well. Very evident in his appearance throughout the years. The shame on this panel towards Scott is awful, a sad tactic perhaps to boost ratings? Truly hope that they don't believe what they are saying about addiction. Scott and the doctor are the most well-informed here. This period was the most coherent and beautiful that Scott ever seemed throughout his career with STP, during his two year sobriety. If only he could have maintained this, bless him x

Scott is actually correct. I have a heroin abuse problem, bi-polar disorder and depression...the last thing he said still gives me chills ;_; Scott, you tried to banish the addiction that plagued you....at least his demons are finally gone. Rest in peace, Scott...
Yeah I hear you the Dual diagnosis makes it very difficult especially the stigma attached to mental illness but about 15 yrs ago when I was in detox program (the worst I relapsed 2 days after I got out) I heard that they recently labeled drug addiction as a mental illness along with bi polar but I think the Bi polar label is a blanket term a long time ago it was called manic depression and it meant extreme highs and lows now it's just Bi polar disorder applied to anyone for whatever reason
Thanks Scott for putting Bill in his place. There are times when he is right and others when he is wrong and this time Bill was completely wrong. That lady too, she was clueless and wanted to participate in the discussion, but if you don't know anything you are there to learn, not offer opinion.
ha! i like how the old lady said theres food addiction too when kim was saying theres no excuse for addiction like throwing it at scott when she cant put down the food lmaooo
Anyone that hasn't been in the deepest throws of addiction will NEVER understand the uncontrolable insanity. The insanity where a mother that clean and sober would die for their child but in the grasp of addiction would feed their fix before their baby, or stare harm to self or incarsaration and still do whatever it takes to get their drug or alcohol of choice. It takes a life long commitment once self admitting to ones self they are helpless to drugs/alcohol and changing people places, and things in theirs lifes, never becoming complacent because an addicts brain will lie, cheat and steal your life from you
Few people in the moment seem able to make the point: when you’re addicted to drugs, you get SICK when you DON’T use them. It’s not just a matter of wanting them really badly, like with the brownie.
Imagine if the issue sexual harassment is brought to the table today. Will the guests stick to their previous opinion or will they take a slightly different perspective? I sure hope it's the latter. :-) Btw, I'm only here for Scott. His fashion sense is always timeless. :-)
Rashelle Ray I as well! I miss *this* Scott...he was *SO* amazing, all the way up to just before the end...the end wasn't the best. But I'm a huge fan of almost everything he did.
Mental Illness has always been stigmatized and minimized, a lot of the guests opinions were purely ignorant saying addiction is just a choice Scott was the only one who knew how destructive and debilitating addiction was, sadly that Demon claimed his life, Rest In Peace Brother, you left an indelible mark on the world with your voice 🙏
Bill Maher came off like a smug child when it came to addiction. His attitude and conviction toward addiction as a whole is a sign that he doesn't really care to learn about it and applies his own anecdotal experiences toward it.
I'm sorry but I am pretty sure (other than MAYBE the doctor) Scott Weiland knows more about addiction. You can discuss all day long but if you have not walked in those shoes you just don't know as much.
To that older woman, did you go through a serious withdrawal if you didn't have that brownie? No you didn't. Not all addictions are equal or have similar circumstances when trying to quit.
Scott Weiland was not only incredibly talented but incredibly intelligent and eloquent. He and Dr. Drew are definitely the wisest on this panel. The skinny lady with the big hair was not very knowledgeable for an author. The “ me too” movement would definitely NOT approve of her comments.
I was sexually harassed. It was actually borderline sexual assault. I worked in a clinic. And one day out of the blue, the director smacked my ass and then made inappropriate comments saying “You’re butt sits up really high, I didn’t realize you were so tight. I meant to smack you on the back”. And did it in front of our co workers to. BRAZEN AND HORRIBLE. People, I’m completely with Scott here, because it was a woman. Not a man. And she was an out lesbian. In a relationship with one of the clinic’s nurses. And she sexually harassed me. And I did leave my job. But not for her. I ended up TAKING her job. Then went to work in state government. So there’s more than one way to get justice 🤣 Scott was so intelligent and very open about himself. He was brave. And a lyrical genius with a voice of such beauty of the likes not heard since Jim Morrison. He tried so hard to get through to them about the mind and perspective of an addict and what it was like on that side of the coin. None so deaf as those who refuse to hear. Of course we know now that addiction is a disease. And they have isolated the genomes that addicts have that are different from those that are not predisposed to addiction. Which is why one person can drink and not become an alcoholic and another person can have a drink and they are an alcoholic from moment on. Whether they get sober or not. Bill Mahr and Gurley Brown look and sound really stupid here knowing what we know now. Also, it’s the very thinking that I don’t need any help to get sober because it’s simply willpower that will save me is exactly how people never get passed their addictions and actually get sober!!! It’s that thinking that kills people!! Idiots.
Here is America’s problem now played out 19 years ago. A comedian and an author think their opinion on addiction is equivalent to that of an addictionologist, who’s spent thousands upon thousands of hours studying the disease, and an actual addict with all of his experience in that disease. Conjecture is not the colleague of expertise.
I love that Drew and Scott are the only ones making intelligent and articulative statements. Bill is great. But I feel like Drew and Scott we’re under appreciated for their input.
It seems to me that Dr. Drew did have a clear picture of the users mind, at least more so than the magazine hag and the comedian. Anyway yeah it's a cool song. It was written to be somewhat hypocritical which I think makes it better too. The live version they do for the single's release party was awesome!
Scott was 100% spot......these clowns wanted to make it a yes/no issue Scott understands it's complicated than that. Especially when talking about drugs....he would know. But none are making the distinction between a drug that is physically addictive. A whole different story. Plus death seems better than withdrawing.
This was the general thinking at this time. It's very upsetting how ignorant society was regarding addiction. It's even more upsetting that some people still see addiction as a choice or lack of willpower.
I have a really easy way to help people understand addiction. See how long you can go without any one of these things: food, hydration, using the bathroom, sleeping, breathing. And if you struggle to go without it or you give in, have your friends and family berate you and ask why you’re so weak. That’s what it feels like. That’s what Drew meant when he was talking about survival. It feels the same as a craving for water when you’re dehydrated. Like you’ll die without it. Not drinking water is a choice, in theory. But after long enough, if the water exists anywhere near you, your brain will force your body to consume it. Yeah, it’s a choice whether you sip alcohol ever in your life. Sure. But most people who judge addicts have not avoided alcohol for their entire lives or at least know and respect people in their lives who have tried alcohol. The judgement needs to stop.
This is a very important interview … in the legacy of Scott Wieland & personally for Jivon Jackson. Addiction is real & not a joke. Sure we say it’s defeat-able with strength and desire.: But sometimes you think every thing is under control & ITS NOT! 🤔
That's an interview from of about 23 yrs old but it was painful to listen.. What bill says, that "its unfair to call addiction a disease, because you have a choice and it's unfair to people with cancer..."...Total bs. Scot was sexually abused as a kid, he had a terrible childhood that scared his brain forever. God knows what his baseline anxiety level was. Just because we hardly see how broken someone's is from inside, doesn't mean that everything is ok with him/her. Thankfully a lot has changer in the understanding of trauma for last couple of years but unfortunately there are still enough of such opinions around.

Absolutely stunning to watch the man throw down in such a coherent and respectable manner. We didn't really see this side of the figure.
Dr Drew mentioned something about how he had helped Scott somehow? So he knew already.
he stated he had seen him "in the throws of his addiction" so I am guessing he may have been a patient at one point? he did help a lot of celebrities even aside from that reality show
Yes, in Pasadena
Maher is such a tool. I think he knows it, which sucks. Miss you Scott.
first time I've ever heard him acknowledge he had an eating disorder as well.
Marlie Centawer RIP Scott W. Easy to type. Hard if you actually mean it .........
Couldn't have said it better myself. Im a recovering boozer, and he was making Soo many valid points. These mother fuckers tried to make him look like an idiot for being an addictive personality, bipolar depressed dude like myself, like alot of us are. Bill deserved to get cancelled. Moron.
@@ivanmullarkey5500 --I am sorry that you have dealt with addiction. Happy that you're recovering. Scott Weiland is one of the people on this show who annoyed me. LOVED his music, & he was a great talent. it's tragic he's gone. Something about him bugged me?!? Watch him. He never looks at the fat Black women. It's just RUDE! He was just always so affected.
@@patriciawright8786 What do you mean by affected?
Dr Drew Is Thinking Like The Doctor He Is And Scott Is Thinking With His Soul Spirit And Mind 💯🎯
I remember watching this. Bill Maher said,"I'm glad your still alive too, although it wouldn't have hurt my record collection" what an asshole. S.W you are certainly missed by me and a lot of fans. Thanx for the good tunes. Thanx for uploading.
Byron P Penick Bill's ratings are due for a decline.
I think web views would be a much more accurate way to get a snapshot of how relevant this white Joe Camel really is or isn't.
Nominay decline??? with the idiot we have in the oval office and all the brain dead morons he's installed in various government positions, bill's ratings will only increase.
Byron P Penick you’re
Bill Maher is a despicable POS.
Scott was sooooo ahead of his time. Men do get sexually harassed in the work place by men and women as well. What he said about drug addiction is true as well. There was a choice in the begining, but it becomes an actual ailment...a disease and impediment on one's life.
💯
How relevant these topics are and how differently they are viewed just 18 years ago is mind blowing
*Relevant today*
Exactly what I was thinking. It's shocking to watch this...
I wish Scott could have stayed this way! He was so on top of things here!
Scott is actually correct. I have a heroin abuse problem, bi-polar disorder and depression...the last thing he said still gives me chills ;_; Scott, you tried to banish the addiction that plagued you....at least his demons are finally gone. Rest in peace, Scott...
Shotgun Kisses please stop the heroin abuse now before it's too late!
Danielle Wolf hey how are you doing?
hey...late reply, just wanted to give you a shoutout from a fellow bottom dweller...you doin ok? hope you are..
Hope you can fight the addiction. It’s the hardest thing to do but really worth it.
bill maher acting as a clown as usual. scott owns
Scott is so on the money here, in light of Metoo...one smart guy
It's painful to see Scott in this now. Hurts my head
Dude Scott is real sharp here, must be after he got out of jail and was clean during No. 4 tour
its unfortunate that the others had to interrupt Scott and not let him finish when he was talking about addiction.
I agree !!! Poor Scott is trying to say what he wants to but he looks frustrated at the same time 😡😡😡😡😡😡
@@jessicawest2862 - Just because he's not the big Rock-Star here.
@@patriciawright8786 what ?.?"???
Major respect to Scott Weiland. Was super open and let his experiences speak for themselves.
Thanks Scott for putting Bill in his place. There are times when he is right and others when he is wrong and this time Bill was completely wrong. That lady too, she was clueless and wanted to participate in the discussion, but if you don't know anything you are there to learn, not offer opinion.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but WEILAND was the only one being REAL.
ha! i like how the old lady said theres food addiction too when kim was saying theres no excuse for addiction like throwing it at scott when she cant put down the food lmaooo
Wow Scott was such a beautiful and intelligent man it's sad that you had to leave us my heart will always forever be broken rest in peace😍😭
Cannot stand Bill Maher! Scott knew what he was talking about!!
Hes sober here..
Oh Oh Oh do I remember this appearance. Beautiful. Love this and THANK YOU for posting! I have it on video tape somewhere...lol
It takes a life long commitment once self admitting to ones self they are helpless to drugs/alcohol and changing people places, and things in theirs lifes, never becoming complacent because an addicts brain will lie, cheat and steal your life from you
Man, Bill Maher is horrible.
Disgusting
He always has been, always will be.
Few people in the moment seem able to make the point: when you’re addicted to drugs, you get SICK when you DON’T use them. It’s not just a matter of wanting them really badly, like with the brownie.
Makes me think of Mike Starr-and all the rest.
💔
Imagine if the issue sexual harassment is brought to the table today. Will the guests stick to their previous opinion or will they take a slightly different perspective? I sure hope it's the latter. :-) Btw, I'm only here for Scott. His fashion sense is always timeless. :-)
I'm only here for Scott too.
Rashelle Ray I as well! I miss *this* Scott...he was *SO* amazing, all the way up to just before the end...the end wasn't the best. But I'm a huge fan of almost everything he did.
To listen to a man describe what was going to eventually kill him is chilling.
Mental Illness has always been stigmatized and minimized, a lot of the guests opinions were purely ignorant saying addiction is just a choice
Scott was the only one who knew how destructive and debilitating addiction was, sadly that Demon claimed his life, Rest In Peace Brother, you left an indelible mark on the world with your voice 🙏
Scott kicked ass.
Scott was sharp and on it here. Good to try to remember him this way. RIP.
This was interesting thanks for uploading and yes I just wanted to listen to scott talk
Weiland just being a balanced/logical human being as per usual. I miss this kind of discourse
Scott was in recovery mode here, very sad that he could not stay on this track and I don,t think it was by choice.
You can discuss all day long but if you have not walked in those shoes you just don't know as much.
this is the weirdest thing....
Scott.Beautiful baby.we love you. Rip.
To that older woman, did you go through a serious withdrawal if you didn't have that brownie? No you didn't. Not all addictions are equal or have similar circumstances when trying to quit.
She's not "addicted" if she can simply say no so easily. People with healthy brains will never understand
Back in the 90s I didn't have no Cable TV so this was my first time seeing Scott Weiland talking on a TV Show
Drew you are a wonderful mind and you have a very logical and true perspective. And i appreciate your empathy.
Damn, this is rare! Thanks for the upload.
Scott was a brilliant, talented, opinionated man that had the worst of demons. So grateful to have had him and his music in my life. ✌️❤️🤘🙏🏻
Idiots.
Dam Bill Maher, arguing with a doctor about medicine. Some things never change. RIP Mr Wieland
Like Layne said in the song, Junkhead.
You can't understand the users mind.
Try with your books and degrees..
You can't*
@@Groasis74 I changed it
Thanks for pointing that out..
It seems to me that Dr. Drew did have a clear picture of the users mind, at least more so than the magazine hag and the comedian. Anyway yeah it's a cool song. It was written to be somewhat hypocritical which I think makes it better too. The live version they do for the single's release party was awesome!
Scott was 100% spot......these clowns wanted to make it a yes/no issue
Scott understands it's complicated than that.
Especially when talking about drugs....he would know.
But none are making the distinction between a drug that is physically addictive. A whole different story. Plus death seems better than withdrawing.
Scott was before he’s time, man I wish he was still here. I love him, we agree with lot of the same things
Scott seemed like completely different person sober. What a shame
These people that aren’t addicts don’t have a clue what they’re talking about
Oh Scott 😩 to see you like this and to see what happened to you and how you ended up. Why did no one around you help you. RIP you wonderful man.
Scott is the only panelist with ANY VIRTUE OR SENSE OF TRUTH.
They didnt let Michael Hutchence speak either.
Pisses me off. Nobody chooses to be an addict.
All that intelligence died with him. He was a very gifted Rockstar, I miss what could have been, and I miss you Scott. 💔
Scott you were fantastic.
The stench of the stigma surrounding addiction and mental illness is strong here. RIP Scott Weiland.
Human Resources is there to protect the company not the employee
Scott hits it! Great stuff!
Scott Weiland smartest guy in the room with the least amount of education... Irony much. Experience over college still wins out. Love you Scott and miss you.
Conversations are exhausting when everyone feels like their clueless opinion is as important as informed knowledge.
Ha! DR drew looks older here than 15 years later lol.
Scott weiland was a pilot. A stone temple pilot. He was pretty amazing with stp. Long live Weland Wyland Woaland!
It's like the old saying, theyll bring you to their territory and theyll beat you with experience
RIP - Scott Weiland
Damn miss Scott!!!
I love how the slim chick tells the thick chick food can be an addiction
