This video will take you through the process of preparing for your proficiency check ride. Henry will go over the maneuvers and procedures that could be covered during the check ride, as well as tips and tricks for successfully completing each one. Whether you're a seasoned pilot or just starting out, this video is a must-watch for anyone looking to take a proficiency check ride for a gyroplane. All of these maneuvers can be found in the FAA practical test standards for the Gyroplane endorsement.
Adventure Air in Chino, California is the premiere Gyroplane flight school in the United States. CFI Henry Boger has over 30 years of aviation experience with the last 10 years focused on Gyroplane instruction. Henry is also a Certified Sales Representative for AutoGyro USA.

Enjoyed that sir, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Excellent explanation and demo. I look forward to it🍻🤙🏽🇺🇸
Thanks for watching!
Liked the video. One technical point, though… turn radius is a fuction of groundspeed and bank angle. Therefore, on a turn about a point, the steepest bank should be when the groundspeed is the highest (flying with the wind) and not on the leeward side of the reference point.
Very true
In Canada as a private fixed wing pilot, it’s not a simple add-on endorsement. I had to do an entire private pilot “Gyroplane” license and exam all over again even though I already had a fixed wing license.
Still super glad I did though, I like flying the gyro more than the Cessna.
The gyro's are definitely a lot of fun!
Do you have any idea what the Canadian rules are for American pilots who just have an add-on endorsement?
Awesome!
Thanks!
You make it look easy Henry! Was it hard to go from Trikes to gyro’s?
Not at all!
Great info Henry. Armin with Hang Gliding Maui has me practicing all of those maneuvers. Prior to Gyroplane lessons I have no flying experience so it will take me a lot more than 15 hrs. Lol!
Thanks for watching!
Interesting landing (for me). I'm not a shallow landing guy. I generally like to come in high and steep so I can land super short. But well done and good info for potential gyro pilots.

What is the average cost of the Gyroplane license? How many hours to be a instructor? TIA
It really depends on your local regulations and fuel costs. Just for consideration, in Southern California where we are, an investment of about $6000 (at least 20 hours for minimum qualifications, some take more) will get you through a sport pilot gyroplane cert. To become a CFI (certified flight instructor) in the US, 250 hours minimum.
@@AdventureAir same amount if you already have sport or private aircrat license? Thanks
@@jorbedo at our flight school, we've had pilots get their endorsement in as little as five hours. That may not be typical, but possible.
@@AdventureAir thank you!
Good videos. Do you use rudder on most turns vs moving the stick left or right then pulling back? Do you feather the pre-rotator handle or pull it fully when starting the process? Can it be engaged at any rotor rpm within limits? Is rotor braking variable or on/off? Are the rotor brake and pre-rotator locked out during flight to prevent accidental application? Just before take off, with the nose wheel raised a foot or so, are you pulling back on the stick to lift off or will it climb out on its own at takeoff speed? Do you take off and land differently with a crosswind? The videos don’t seem to indicate that, to me anyway. At what windspeed does crosswind become an issue? How hard or easy is it to make the mistake of pushing the stick forward too far or fast, causing a nose over, ruining your whole day/life? Thanks.
+@dajo4349 watch some of our other videos and many of these questions can be answered.
From no experience how long do you estimate being able to pass
Are you speaking from a position of no flight experience or ratings? If that's the case, in the USA, a minimum of 20 hours is required for light sport aircraft-gyroplane certificate. If you are looking for a transition certificate from fixed wing or rotor wing, we've had students certify in as little as 5 hours.
@AdventureAir yes I was studying ground school for private fixed but now interested in gyrocopter and was looking for a ground school course for gyrocopter and thanks for responding
So I dont any time in any aircraft

That was really informative, probably the most I've seen yet concerning the gyro and fixed wing pilots. I do have one question though. Flying a fixed wing plane, we are required to have our certificate/license in our possession. So, while flying the gyro, do we have to have our logbook in our possession? Thank you.
When you get the gyro add on rating, the FAA sends you a new license that says "Gyroplane". Until you receive that, then yes, you should have your logbook on hand as proof.
@@AdventureAir I thought it was just a logbook endorsement? So, you need to submit documentation to the FAA for an updated certificate?
@@bartgoins1782 Yes. The Gyro CFI that completes your checkride will help you with that.
I have a commercial fixed wing license, are the requirements the same?
It would just be an add on rating, like a tail wheel endorsement. You would only have to show proficiency with 2 different instructors on a short check ride. We've had students get their endorsement in as.little as five hours of instruction.
Hi Henry, great video, thanks. Do you guys in the US not have to do recovery from unusual attitudes, vertical descent (with power), high speed flight (transition from cruise to high speed and back without change of heading or height) in your proficiency check? Or is it different if you're gaining a PPL (G) rather than just adding the rating to an existing PPL or Sport Pilot's license? How much ab initio training do you do versus converting existing pilots - I am fixed wing rated as well and converted to Gyros to gain my PPL(G)?
Thanks for your comment. Henry's gonna answer that one for you.
