The US indoctrination system is total garbage. It started with No Child Left Behind where schools just started passing students to the next grade that weren't performing at grade level, this disincentivized both students and teachers. Then common core was introduced and it has been a complete failure. I'm seeing high-school graduates that can read at what would have been a 3rd grade level 40 years ago, and can't do 2nd grade level addition and subtraction. This combined with DEI and the removal of music programs and trades/home economics has produced a generation that is largely incompetent. The DOE has utterly failed and needs to be abolished.

Here's the thing. Most, if not all politicians care nothing for space as it won't get them re-elected. China, for all its advances, only sees space for its military applications and international manhood-measuring. Private endeavors such as SpaceX are the only organizations that are going to actually get real people into space to stay. I'm glad that the government and its military are funding a lot of the developments. That said, most of us space enthusiasts want to see eventual colonization of the solar system. Why would any government want to spend billions to spawn new colonies that will eventually demand political independence?

    • @MichaelWinter-ss6lx
      @MichaelWinter-ss6lx 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

Why? In the hope they get more back than whats invested, before colony goes independent. There's megatons of resources to grab. The Moon is key to space industry, bc of the small gravity well, and Mars is key to the AsteroidBelt.
It may look too early for a space colony now, but the privat sector already has its own dynamic, so it is now time to at least think about the implications. I do not wish to see a society being run by a business corporation;• leaving behind whoever does not benefit the shareholders....

Why in the hell should NASA "get involved" to help one company out when Boeing received more tax money to accomplish a task than SpaceX which actually can take things to the ISS? So Boeing is struggling in space and the airplane business. It is not the taxpayer's responsibility to hire "qualified people at NASA" to help level the tech gap. Last I looked SpaceX put most of their patents out free for use. I'm tired of hearing about poor Boeing, they drove the company off a cliff on their own.

Back before most of us were born, the US Presidents Eisenhower and JFK wanted to direct money away from the military industrial complex and into a new class of corporations focused on space exploration. A prime consideration for this was the "undue influence" being obtained by the MIC as Eisenhower revealed in his farewell address to the nation but they also wanted the US to lead the world in high technology. JFK refused to enter Vietnam and kept a huge amount of money going into space travel. As soon as he was killed, the military took over and the US immediately jumped into Vietnam and all space funding was rapidly diverted back to the military industrial complex. This is all publicly available information. The MIC doesn't care about space because most of that money goes to non-military contractors like SpaceX and non-military divisions of corporations like Boeing.

I was about to say the same thing, then saw your post. You are 100% correct. Computer engineering is seen to be a much easier path to take. Most sciences and other engineering (electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aerospace) take a lot of grounding in wide areas like math, physics, and chemistry. CE, on the other hand, can be done in a very focused way, and you need to be concerned about general sciences only if you are going to write applied programs for. Now, AI and robotics do take more (particularly the latter), but they have a "cool" factor that frankly space has trouble competing with.
It also doesn't help that tuition at top-notch engineering schools is in the stratosphere. When I went to undergrad school (albeit, in the 70s), my first year of tuition was under $4k, rising to I think about $5k when I finished. In inflation-corrected figures, that's around $25k now, which blows my mind... But my undergrad school now actually charges about $60k/yr, which is about 2.5x the rate of inflation. Think of it, get a 4 yrs BS, and be $240k in debt (which is how most people have to fund their education). I don't know what I'd do if I were in that position nowadays.

Too many people getting useless degrees in areas like anthroplogy, advertising, liberal arts, criminal justice, philosophy, law, etc. Highly idealistic fields that add little value to society. Too many kids these days spend time and money chasing degrees in fields that have no demand. And then they end up broke and can't change direction. They seem to be mentally lazy. It's not that all of those fields are worthless, it's how they're being taught, or, what students are not encouraged to learn in them that is worthless, at best. In philosophy, f.i, non-reality based epistemologies are preferred by the majority of those who are teaching students today. Platonic and descendant philosophies which champion unreason are considered as valid as Aristotilian empiricism, if not more so (a contradiction in itself). Little if any thought is given to the historical truth that rejection of Platonic ideals for Aristotle's effectively ended the dark ages, ushering in the Enlightenment era.
For anyone who wishes to live in this universe, some type of philosophy is required to determine one's actions. If one isn't chosen consciously, an unconscious mixture of vaguely conceived and competing ideals will be absorbed from one's surroundings via osmosis, leading to the epistemological crisis facing the West today.

NASA was simply cut too close to the bone in the 1970s. After achieving Apollo, it was gutted and cut to 0.5%, only 1/2 a penny out of each bloated federal dollar in the budget. This was far too much. Given all we ask NASA to do, they deserve, indeed we all need to DEMAND, they get 1 full percent, minimum. Yes, NASA needs better oversight, ironically by someone like the deceased James Webb, who brought Apollo in under budget and on time. Regardless of your political leanings it is beyond frustrating that we have blown over $80 BILLION in corrupt Ukraine, in just the last three years, with very little oversight or accountability. That's money that could have been better spent elsewhere, including on NASA. That is changing though. Recent trends suggest that more kids are opting for STEM degrees and even getting into trades and liberal arts degrees are seeing a decline. This is great news. The issue comes with government agencies like NASA not being able to compete with private industry salaries and benefits leading talent to go into the private sector. Just look at how fast Blue origin, SpaceX, rocket lab jobs and internship opening get filled. NASA can’t compete with that. US universities are graduating more engineers than ever though there is a significant increase in the number of international students in that area and also a lot of students preferring to go into the tech, consultancy or engineering services sector instead of the more hardware and manufacturing side of things. NASA was needed in the early days when there was not enough justification for private space funding, but with a glut of commercial launch companies, most of what NASA has been doing can be done better, faster, and cheaper by private companies.
Now, there may be justification for the very long-term deep space missions (it's hard for a commercial company to fund multi decade long funding, such as Voyager)
But they are well behind the leading edge in terms of simple technology, and a lot of their instatutional knowledge is out of date and as much a drag on the industry as a help.
We need to clean up NASA and get them out of the launch business (at least) and have them figure out how to do project close to on-time and on-budget, having projects end up spending many times their budget can occasionally happen when doing leading edge development, but that's not what NASA is doing any longer.

First, let me mention that as a US citizen, my own observations reflect what I see here in the US, and I understand that some things may be different in other parts of the world.
One of society’s greatest challenges, is the average person’s propensity toward laziness. Everyone loves the conveniences, comforts and advantages brought to society through scientific discovery and technological advancement… but most, want to simply rely on “others” to do all of the work that this requires. Not only the work of building and producing, but even the work of learning and understanding.
Half of the people in this country, can’t even name the capitol city of their own home state, let alone put in the effort to learn and understand any of the science behind anything that carries our society forward.
We are (generally speaking) content with being stupid… as long as someone else ensures that we can happily and comfortably continue to scroll and post.
On the topic of “investment”… the notion that “government” will make any of this happen, and do so at reasonable cost (without enormous waste)… is more of a “science fiction” than any of the mission/project ideas proposed.
Ultimately… humanity’s scientific advancement, and the exploration further into space… will be driven primarily, not by nations or their governments, but by independent business interests, and their profit motivations.
When businesses “discover” resources, or other potential sources for huge profits which can only be capitalized upon by reaching “off world locations”… you will begin to see the necessary investment into meeting the requirements for “making it happen”.
The era in which nations sought to be the leaders in such endeavors… is OVER.

Thank you for this NASA space budget + knowledge-worker system overview. This is the best i have seen online. Schools need creative win-win-win competition via combined local and space permaculture regeneration of life for living both here, the Moon, Mars, and even Cycling Oneil Stations. Regenerative Living System design principles create technology in complimentary harmonic mutual-support with all life instead of seeing life as a dead resource for consumption. All space colonies will require expertise in systems biology along with traditional STEM subjects. Our "anger about space" comes from business (as usual) plans, that remove our children's inspiration for a better future life. We all need the adventure of exploration and creative abundance that inspires us to realize more than our ancestors. The world seems churning between people playing "endgames" and those creating a future for our children. Diamantis X-Prizes are creative (win-win-win) competitions that chalanges us with "What If" inspiration, to create what none have done before, for the good of everybody! I want schools to be like that. So stay angry '& inspired' about space!

nAsa does compete with Boeing/LM/Northrop or United/Delta - but none of those companies would exist without the tech from nAsa.

NASA needs to keep the current or get higher than current budget level and then hire new top talent from 330M population US in place of the top guys who go and create commercial space that can do so much more for so much less money. This should be benefiting both NASA and private space and US as a whole. If schools can't output enough talent the ITAR-internal domain should be extended to the NATO allies, or at least the more reliable of them. That would at least double the talent pool without women and minorities suddenly exploding their interest to STEM.

NASA stopped attracting people when they stopped pushing exploration. People were excited about going to the moon, and eagerly awaited seeing the first man on Mars. Unfortunately the politicians saw no point, and Wernher von Braun retired at 60 because his plan for a trip to Mars in the 1980's were going nowhere. As a kid I watched the Space Shuttle with great anticipation. I was looking forward to the day when they would finally announce that they were going to use it to haul building materials into orbit for a space station and an interplanetary starship. Instead they only ever launched it to low orbits for some satellites, and some pointless scientific busy work. My imagination that it would live up to the name never came true. It never went to anywhere like the name implied it would, but instead it went to the absolute nothingness of space and then back again. As pointless as a sunday drive. That's why I love Elon. He is the first person since von Braun to move humanity forward on the most exiting goal in history. The trip to Mars will do more to fill classrooms with propulsion engineering students than anything NASA has done in my life time.

The majority of these issues boil down to the current state of American and western culture as a whole. Space X has done A LOT in a relatively short time on a smaller budget than NASA. Clearly there were steps that could've been taken but weren't which just shines a bright light of effeciency issues within NASA as a whole. More money will help, but it'll only go so far if the underlying issues aren't fixed as well.
The idea that one of the problems to overall manpower is a lack of women and "minorities" in the field is another issue that stems from the cultural issues. It's one thing to be aware of this, but it's another entirely to say we NEED to get more women and minorities into the field instead of just saying we should get as many passionate and motivated competent individuals as possible regardless of sex or skin color. I personally don't care what sex or "race" you are as long as you're competent and ideally a good person with good intentions. The right people for the job matters far far more than what's between their legs or what color their skin is.
As for the overall amount of stem field individuals entering the field I think anyone who's gone to school in the last 20+ years know full well that basic education is corrupted and plagued with the same cancerous crap currently in politics and the day to day culture AND colleges appear to pretty much be indoctination camps for the unaware.
If you want the problems you listed to be fixed in way that doesn't end horribly it will likely require actions that I believe you'd likely oppose based on what I've seen regarding you're political views. For instance, eliminating dei and affirmitive action as both concepts are firmly rooted in devisive racism that wrongly paints a certain white looking group as oppressors to be suppressed and a certain dark skinned group as "incompetent victims" that need help cause they obviously can't fairly compete with those darn "oppressors". Divisive and racist solutions don't fix racism nor do they unify the very people it's drawing lines between. When need to fix our divisive culture with a sense of unity not born of such divisive concepts and much of this will improve on it's own and that's just one part. If we could really unify and purge the corruption we've become so accustomed to in our culture and government we'd likely see a massive boost to the field of space exploration unlike anything the world has ever seen, but that's just a fanciful ideal at the moment. I lack the confidence in our species to believe we can/will do that.
