You don't need to be going fast. Your track just needs to be spinning fast which requires a fairly powerful engine. You can ride on water like a jet ski with a decent machine.
Snowmobile's can cross water pretty well however you really have to be careful and commit to it, like stated in the video water maybe got on the clutches then the belt probably started to slip then its all downhill from there lol that's the main reason I'm not a huge fan of belt driven off-road vehicles.
Thing is, snowmobiles CAN cross water, but, you need a good amount of speed, and, you need to keep the throttle pinned. Let it slow down, even a bit, and, you're sunk, literally.

The guy with the snowmobile he was trying to hydroplane a cross the open water and didn't make it a cross. It is illegal to do that on a snowmobile anywhere in the US. He mostly got a ticket and was charged for the removal of the snowmobile out of the water.

If he would have been smart enough to hit the water going faster the front skis keep the front end of the snowmobile afloat along with the force of the tracks pushing the water behind like a propeller as long as you hit it at a decent speed. It's the reverse of water skiing. Instead of being pulled, you are pushing the skis. Either way they will stay on top of the water if you are going fast enough. He hit entirely too slow so not only did he not stay on the surface of the water, that also allowed water to get into his motor and shut it down. I have watched people take a snowmobile at high speed and run it across a lake. But again, you can't be scared. You got to hit it like you mean it and keep that throttle mashed the entire way across or you end up like this guy.
They tell you in fork lift training not to jump off the seat during a mishap because you are safer inside the lift than outside the lift.

You can get over water with a snowmobile if you do it right.
