We continue to get comments about the CX-5 in the European market having parking sensors. Please note both vehicles in this review are Canadian cars, and we are a Canadian show. We do not cover vehicles outside of Canada, and since the sensors are not available here we cannot talk about features we don't get.
Just purchased a 2018 Mazda CX-5. Love it. It's the best driving and nicest looking SUV available for the money. Thank you Mazda for not ruining your cars with CVTs!
That's actually a really good point! A lot of the other Japanese auto makers are going with CVTs now for their entire lineup, and while the 6 speed auto is a little older than most, it beats a CVT any day.
If you're considering a 17/18 CX5...just DO it. It'll be some of the best money you'll ever spend. It's a lot more upscale than the price would suggest, fun to drive, decent on gas, the new G-vectoring is very cool, it's a great road trip vehicle...and you won't have to live with the whole 'BMW - The Official National Vehicle Of Douchebag Drivers' stigma. lol
I have a 2021 carbon edition turbo cx 5 with awd. They finally updated the infotainment. Now its 10.3 inch screen and remote start is standard now. Loving it
I had a 2014 CX5 GT W/Tech package and just bought a 2017 CX9 GT w/Tech. My CX5 was amazing but the newer interiors on the CX5/CX9 is a step above. It truly feels like a car that should be double the price. Mazda really has put themselves a step above their true competition (Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc) The new CX5 and CX9 are truly amazing vehicles for the price you pay for them.
We agree, and that's why we ended up buying one! We are hoping to feature a full lineup of the competition, we're working on some ideas to get the vehicles right now.
@@a88888888a I had 2016 and now 2018, 2016 had better gas millage despite my 2018 2 cylinder shut down to save gas. i only got 2018 for the look of it and now that we in Canada are getting 2020 in diesel version I regret buying 2018 and not wait until 2020
@@subotica1974 I ended up getting a ev car for my wife. But am considering a 350 hp phev for fuel economy. Test drove the cx5. Good car, but I would buy a 2016 first for the lower cost and then possibly buy the diesel also. I drive mostly city and only 12k per year so diesel might not be my ideal choice as I only travel a few miles each way so the engine doesn't get warmed up enough
Mazda is a company that sticks with the ideals even when they know how hard it is. In that sense it is a true luxury brand, while the Germans are just profitable businesses good at taking advantage of badge snobbery to the fullest extent possible.
So do we! And even though they've got a standard design language throughout their product lineup, it's still easy to distinguish which model is which. As a BMW enthusiast I still have trouble with the new 7 Series vs. 5 Series, and the X3 and X5, they look too similar now.
We like the look of it too. It will be interesting to see how the X3 F25 compares when the next generation comes out. The first gen X3 looks very dated when compared with the new one, I imagine this one will suffer the same fate.
interesting comparison. I bought a 2017 CX5 in may and I also looked at the X1 before my purchase. I could not justify the extra 5k or 10k (depending on options) for the X1 so I opted for the Mazda. I am quite content with my decision!
The X1 is also comparable, it's a bit smaller than the CX-5 and the X3 is a bit bigger. We looked at the X1 also, it's a nice update for 2017 but we found the interior to feel cheap even when fully loaded.
We commented to someone else on here about that. The X1 is about 5 inches shorter than the CX-5, and the X3 is 4 inches longer. A 2017 X1 xDrive28i with the same features as the CX-5 has an MSRP of $54,447.00 but includes a couple extras like parking sensors, panoramic sunroof, and park assist, but doesn't appear to include rear heated seats or rear USB charging. The X1 is certainly in the same compact SUV market, it's smaller than the CX-5 but would be equally as comparable, however the vehicle we had to compare with was this one.
Just FYI comparing audio systems is one place that would favor the older car. Speakers generally sound much better after they've been thoroughly broken in. My 2017 CX-5 Bose speakers were harsh and didn't pick up the full spectrum of sound when I first got the car home. Now a few months later they sound much better.
That's really interesting, good to know! We'll see how the sound progresses over the next few months to see how it changes, we'll have the opportunity to see the X3 again in a little while. I believe the X3's harmon/kardon audio setup is a 12-speaker versus the 10 in the CX-5, but that shouldn't make a huge difference.
I found this comparison very intriguing. We needed a new car, went to the local Mazda dealer. With our budget, rather than buying a base model new, we decided to buy an optioned up used vehicle. Our choice came down to a 2014 cx-5 gt, or a 2013 bmw i28xdrive. Same price, roughly. The interior of the bmw, although beautiful, felt austere, clinical. Like sitting in a doctor's office. Once I sat in, and drove the cx-5, I didn't even want to test drive the x3. We love our cx-5. As much as I would love to own a bmw, it would look kind of goofy sitting in the driveway of our modest middleclass home. The cx-5, though, looks very classy there.
Mazda has a seriously fantastic vehicle with the CX-5, even the first generation was very popular out here with consumers. There are a few CX-5 enthusiast groups on Facebook if you're interested in joining them, there's always useful information there and the community is great!
@@XDMIIIIIIIII The 2014 got t-boned, and totaled after 3 months. I bought a 2015 and it's been very reliable. Only issue was the AWD coupling broke while it was still under warranty.
The Mazda does come with an optional diesel in late 2019. And the Signature package offers a 360 camera, wood interior trim and a similar tan leather upholstery to the X-3. I’ve been researching for the best value. And the 2.5 liter turbo with wider aftermarket tires pretty much fills the deal at nearly half the price.
Mazda has continuously improved their vehicles with each new model year, we're still hoping we can drive the CX-5 Diesel soon, we haven't had a chance to book it yet.
Well this is a first for me and illustrates just how far Mazda has come over the years, especially with the new model year. Love the idea - great job with the video!
Very odd how much specs differ from country to country. I live in Sweden and our 2016.5 Mazda CX5 has parking sensors in the front/back and backup camera with trajectory. It also came with power folding mirrors and auto folding mirrors when ignition is on/off. Our 2016.5 Mazda 2 came with the same features. We got the CX5 for 37.734 US and the 2 for 18.800 US. The CX5 has the 2.5l engine paired to an automatic and the 2 1.5l 6 speed manual.
Here in Chile we have both parking sensors, incoming vehicle alert (radar), backup camera and folding mirror as standard. Actually went to see a X5 3 days ago and found, quite surprisingly that my 2017 CX5 is better equipped! The X5 doesn't get all the options available here though.
I traded off my 335i bmw for a brand new Mazda cx3, couldn't be happier with it, i love it, well done MAZDA!!!! their vehicles have improved in the latest years, if Mazda keep doing the good work MAZDA will be the newest premium generation, they just need to improve the power over the engines, suspension, transmission and that's it!!
Not sure of the older Mazda models but Mazda 2019 CX5 (onwards) for the win. I used to own an Audi A3. I wanted a bigger vehicle. Looked at the X3, Q3 and the CX5. Just loved the CX5 overall. It just looks more classy imo and drove brilliantly that I couldn't justify paying all that extra for an Audi (again) or a BMW. Not writing off the x3 or the Q3 but in the end I just went for the Mazda 2019 CX5. Simple Beauty and lovely driving pleasure.
the 2019 CX5 is even better in my opinion, still super attractive, and now includes many more features that weren't available in 2017. Definitely a great choice for the its price.
I've owned both and ironically i traded my X3 in for my 2017 mazda cx5 touring. i did everything i did in the x3 with the cx5. mud, sand, deep snow, towing, water, handling. and all but cornering at high speeds my cx5 was way better. way way way better offload!!! i love my cx5. i feel the 18 headlights are kind of to small and the brake lights are too. WHY NO LED STANDARD
I think you can get backup sensors on the USA. The Mazda CX5 is a good value with a driver-centered cockpit that is comfortable with good materials. Visibility over that long hood is an issue as is the smaller storage space aft.
The Mazda might not have split screen but the navigation will go on the heads up display and then you can use whatever on the actual infotainment center
That is a good point. I believe BMW's heads up system is similar, the only one we drove was the 2016 i8 with a HUD but I don't remember it working as well as Mazda's. To be fair though, we also drove a 2016 Mazda CX-3 with the HUD and it was limited compared with the one found on our 2017 CX-5.
Very odd that parking sensors aren't offered in Canada. They are on EU spec cx5. I have a 2015 model and it came with front & rear sensors as well as rear colour parking camera with guide lines.
We're not sure why they aren't offered here in Canada either, but it's our biggest disappointment about the car. Likely the 2018 will have them so they can say it's different from the first year of production.
Would like to see a video of you towing with your cx5, and using the hitch for other tasks. It surprisingly has the highest towing capacity of the small crossover market
Interesting comparison. Just bought a 2017 CX-5 GT and appreciate what Mazda has done with it, with each new drive. Depending on how long you plan to keep the vehicle, cost to maintain may be significant... just saw stats on this too. Plan on spending 2X, or more, on the BMW over time. I've owned 2 Beemers and 6 Mazdas. Both extremely enjoyable to drive. Won't go back to BMW though.
Thanks for this very thorough and very interesting review. It was especially helpful to me: my wife's 2015 BMW x3 28d comes off lease later this year, and I am (gently) trying to persuade her to think about replacing it with something less expensive. The new CX-5 (with, assuming it actually , arrives this year, the new diesel engine) would seem to be a perfect vehicle to move on to. But I really appreciate the limitations you point out about the CX-5; very bizarre that they don't have parking sensors!
The only problem there being, once you've driven a superior engine you'll never be satisfied with a downgrade in that department, no matter how many premium features you add.
I Have had both cars. They are great, BMW Is one step over Mazda. Mazda CX5 looks much modern , inside and outside, but , BMW quality and finish Is unbeatable. Better finishes and materials. You will be very happy with both cars. BMW diesel engine Is much quieter and premiun feel than Mazda ones, but Mazda has better fuel comsuption.
The ride of the Mazda is certainly nicer, even when we think back to the non M Sport xDrive28i we drove earlier this year. One thing we didn't mention was the engine, Mazda doesn't use forced induction whereas the 28i and 28d are both turbos which makes them feel a little rougher.
Also, if you hide both badges and ask ppl who are not very familiar with those car brands to choose which one they prefer more, I am sure the majority of them will choose Mazda, especially because how comfortable it is. Therefore, those 20k difference is really only for the badge. Good review, keep it up!
Mazda maintenance period is only 4 months. BMW maintenance period is 1 year. Mazda will cost more to maintain the car due to much more frequent maintenance schedule.
Jill Thompson Oh really, I agree 4 months that is too frequent... Here in Hong Kong the service centre told me 6 months is the standard period but they suggested me to have an inspection every 8 to 9 months if I am driving less than 20,000km per year. Therefore, in real case that may not be so frequent as they stated on the catalog. Also, don't forget the BMW is like 50% more expensive than the Mazda, which perhaps be much more than sufficient to cover the maintenance costs until your next car.
Bose is alright, but we definitely prefer the in-car audio from Haman/Kardon these days. 10-15 years ago having Bose in the car was pretty rare, today it's a lot more common.
I initially looked at the CX-5 and was underwhelmed. I really wanted to like it but really did not care for the drivetrain or the way it handled. I was hesitant to test the X3 but did anyway. Even though I ended up w a 35i I tested the 28i as well. The engine and transmission on the BMW is light years ahead of the Mazda in terms of response and power. If the Mazda had more torque down low and a quick transmission I would consider it. I know you purposely didn't compare engines but for me that was a massive difference between the two.
If we had the xDrive28i we featured back in the winter we'd definitely have, but the amount of hate comments we'd get comparing a gas to a diesel would have been insane. We felt with the smaller BMW engine the car felt underpowered, but going for the large 35i engine is definitely the way to go with the X3.
Right now I am cross shopping a 2019 CX-3 Signature awd vs a 2016 BMW X3 awd. They are in the same price range and both have turbocharged 4 cylinder engines. The Mazda has the advantage of being new and maybe more trouble free and less costly to maintain over time. The Mazda also uses regular gas which is a money saver.
The 2019 CX-5 Signature definitely has a lot going for it! We just put out an episode on it last week: th-cam.com/video/DtaSgnb2jJA/w-d-xo.html I'd easily take it over the BMW X3, so far we haven't had any problems with our 2017 and we don't hear from owners with the CX-9 about the turbo 2.5L engine either. As long as you can live without a decent infotainment system and poor quality backup camera (360 cam in the US) then the CX-5 is a serious competitor in the upper segments now.
Don't shop for Cx-5 2019 yet. Wait until 2020 or 2021, it will come out with 360 view Camera and Panoramic roof. For now 2019 CX-5 is no different from 2018 one.
I think it would make more sense to use the current value of a 2015 X3 in this comparison. For many people, the question is: Should I buy a used X3 28i or a brand new CX5 GT? If I had to make this choice, I would be thinking about how loaded can I get the X3 for the price of the CX5 and go from there.
I think he's just using the 2015 model instead of a 2017 because he just didn't have access to a 2017. 2015 and 2017 models are the same car pretty much
Tehgziz is correct, this was the only vehicle we had access to, much like all the vehicles we review. The X3 new as equipped was $57,000 new, and a 2017 with the same features as the one we have in the video is closer to $60,000 if equipped with the same options as the CX-5, but also includes rear sun shades and the panoramic sunroof. Right now if you were in the market for a CPO 2015 X3 xDrive28d with the same options as the one we've featured, you're looking around $42,000: goo.gl/6XxvQS There are some 2015 X3 xDrive28i models for sale around here without M Sport for $33,000 but don't come as well equipped. Lowest prices we've seen are $29,000 base model with 100k kms.
USA / Canada won't accept that a 20d badge is enough for hauling around a 2 tonne SUV. Power has always trumped economy in those markets. No bad thing.
Nigel, thank you for this interesting comparison. Now that luxury car brands seem to be as popular as ever and non-luxury car brands become more upscale, comparing non luxury cars to luxury cars is something that many buyers probably do now (should I splurge on the BMW, or save the $15k for my RRSP?) Features and value proposition aside, I think that one thing that still distinguishes German vehicles from others is driving feel at high speed. Cars from BMW, MB, VW, Audi feel very stable, and solid at speed; these cars were designed for Autobahn speeds. The difference compared to other brands is not as great as it used to be, but it continues to persist. On the downside, maintenance costs still tend to be higher, although this might now be alleviated in initial years by "complementary" service plans.
That's certainly a good point, and I think the Germans have a better method for higher speed stability since they have higher speed limites over there. In Québec most of the regional roads are 90kph whereas in Ontario they've dropped them to 70kph. The CX-5 seems to be pretty solid around 125kph on the highways here, but we don't have much need to go faster. I know with BMW in Canada and the US they're cutting back on the service by a year, so you get about 25% less value from the included maintenace. With the specific Mazda dealership we bought our car from we recevied a VIP card which gives us 3 free oil changes, car detailing, and we paid an extra $100 for windshield glass replacement. Add that to Mazda's unlimited 5 year warranty and we think it's a pretty good value when compared with the competition.
Your comparison is very relevant, according to what offers the CX5, i always think that Mazda is an "Access Premium" brand. You were not enough talking about the looks, but the CX5 is pleasing miles ahead. Very nice and relevant analysis instead !.
Appearance is always going to differ person to person. We definitely like the look of the CX-5 a lot more than the X3, we discussed the CX-5's appearance in more detail with the Spotlight episode we filmed the week before.
The diesel CX5 is so nice. Has so much torque and suits an SUV more. I never really get petrol engines in an SUV. Diesels have more torque and are always way more economical than a petrol.
I've always had the same thought too but most SUVs sold here in North America are gas unfortunately. I remember one of the Jeep models through the Mercedes merger was launched with the CDI diesel engine and it failed miserably here. We're hoping to get the diesel model to review once it arrives.
Very good review, thanks for posting it. I'm a longtime BMW owner and I love the brand. 7 Bavarian cars and 3 bikes. That said I'm thinking of the CX 5 for my next daily driver IF they bring the 2.2 liter diesel to the US. I tend to keep vehicles for @ 8 years and the thought of owning a current model BMW after the warranty expires gives me the night sweats! I'll keep my 2001 M Roadster as a fun car, but for "hauling the mail" and my 16' sailboat I'd prefer to go Mazda.
We're hoping those diesels hit our dealerships also! I think it could be a big market for Mazda considering VW is all but done with diesel in North America. There's certainly a lot of rumours pointing towards the 2018 models having diesel as an option, at least in the US. I hope it ends up being the case!
Idk why but the european version has power folding mirrors, a higher power output (194 hp, 190 lb-ft) and rear, front parking sensors and a backup camera are standard on the two higher trim levels in switzerland(there are three trim levels in switzerland: Challenge, Ambition and Revolution.)
PRN Cx9 is not available in switzerland, but we have got the Mazda 2, 3, cx-3, cx-5, 6 sedan, 6 sport wagon and the two mx5's and all off them have as an option a Diesel engine, well except the mx5.
And where do you live? As you'll see by going through the comments, different markets get different options. In fact we've pinned a comment to the top of this video that explains this. In Canada, power folding mirrors aren't offered, neither are parking sensors. In other markets like Europe they are.
No worries. We've gotten a lot of comments about it since publishing the video and just want to make sure we're clear that we seem to be in a market that is less equipped than the rest of the world. It's unfortunate that we don't get these features.
We had no issues with the CX-5 during the winter this year, it managed without any issue on pretty rough roads, and getting through unplowed parking lots with ease.
Definitely sounds like it! We're still not sure why we aren't getting power folding mirrors or parking sensors on this vehicle, even for the 2019 Models it doesn't seem like they're offering it.
Weird the Canadian model has no parking sensors!!?? Seems like just a basic option, I don't know a new car sold here in Australia that doesn't have them. We also get folding mirrors but never got the option for heated rear seats or heated steering wheel. Good review, thanks.
I don't think you'd be missing much without the heated seats/wheel! Now ventilated seats would be a better fit for your market. We're assuming Mazda is bringing those features with the 2018 or 2019 models to spur some more sales.
PRN I guess here in Australia for the amount we pay we should get every feature. My wife just got the CX5 AKERA in the 2.2L twin turbo diesel and the MRP is $50k!!!
excellent review. I have cross shopped both the X1 and CX5 and felt the CX5 drove better but had less power. Actually, that is it weak spot, the power. It has one of the best HUDs at any price point that shows adaptive cruise, blind spot, lane and speed all at once and very cleanly. It has a very responsive drive and good adaptive cruise. When I sit down in one it just seems livable and welcoming. Hard to describe. I would have one if I did not already have a lexus and have started to think I am what I drive a bit. If it had a lexus badge on it for 32000 USD no question about it. Also, you did not mention it but the Bose system has stage widening setting i that really enhances the sound stage in the CX5. Also it gets good mpg without a CVT and has a very aggressive sport mode setting.
We haven't had a chance to drive the new X1 yet to see what it's engine performance is like, but BMW has smaller turbo engines, we were surprised and happy the CX-5 is naturally aspirated. There are two settings for Bose on the CX-5 that we have, CenterPoint and AudioPilot. It's hard to get a good idea through our audio equipment the true sound quality but in person with the same source the BMW harmon/kardon system is better, even with the Bose features enabled on the Mazda.
You made the right choice with the Mazda. When the time comes to servicing you'll be glad you got the Mazda over that BMW. The tires alone on that BMW are twice as much.
Tell me about it! We paid about $1,200 taxes in for winter tires & rims, the owner of the X3 got tires alone for $1,200 before taxes last month. And that was an employee discount kind of deal he got too!
I've just picked up a slightly older fully loaded 2012 CX5 AWD Sport, 175 psi. I have to say it's an absolute blast to drive, handles well and digs in with the AWD when you floor it. Plenty of power, amazing fuel economy and with 68 k on the clock 15,000 Euros = Bargain. Full leather Bose, and yes reversing camera and sensors all round. With BMW'S overpriced product and Mazda's increased reliability and better styling it's a no brainer, Mazda all the way.
No power mirrors or PDC on this Canadian spec CX5?! In the UK these features are standard on certain versions of Mazda 2 nevermind previous gen. CX5. It seems Canadian buyers are being deprived.
Maybe you could still get them fitted later on. Do they offer parking sensors as an optional dealer fit? The electrics and software must be set up for parking sensors already even if they're not fitted as all CX5s are built on the same factory line in Hiroshima I think. Anyhow, just a suggestion.
Someone should do a new version of this comparison using a top spec CX5 turbo. That’s what I have, 2023 model. It has pretty much everything you could want at about half the cost of the X3. I do like the X3 and have been thinking of getting it just as a way to impress the neighbours 😅 but it’s hard to justify when the CX5 is so damn good.
@@PRNTestDrive maybe because Canadians are awesome drivers and don't need aids, lol. There are some features that were popular in Canada before the US like daytime running lights.
The Mazda CX-5 is a great SUV! However when comparing it to the BMW X3 it shows that it it drives too much like an SUV. Soft, not tight, good steering but not precise...The BMW X3 drives more like a car and has way more power in both the 2.0L and 3.0L gas engines. The Mazda CX-5 may win on value and be truly a nice vehicle for the price. For those people putting an importance on performance will do better with the BMW X3....
European car magazine normally compare the New Mazda Cx5 vs Bmw X1 vs Audi Q3... not the X3, is bigger... I also notice German car cost more in USA ... in fact here in Italy the Cx5 2.2 diesel cost 42.000 euro , BMW X1 diesel cost 39.000 same option and power...
While it's true the X1 and Q3 are both in the same segment, both are smaller than the CX-5. Yes, the X3 is larger than the CX-5 also, so it's hard to compare exactly since neither compact SUV in BMW's lineup are perfectly comparable. One of the reasons we film Showdowns like this is to be different from what traditional automotive journalists are doing, rather than producing the same comparisons everyone else does we try to be a little different.
nice try my dear bmw fanboy :D cx 5 4wd, automatic and full optional cost 40.400, for the same price you can buy a mid model x18d manual transmission or automatic rdw version. top end 150hp turbodiesel with awd and automatic transmission cost 43k. prices in north america looks lower than europe simply because everything is priced without tax, sale tax are added after the price list, for a brand new car or food in grocery store. meanwhile in europe all prices are vat included, around 18-25% of tax, this explain the difference.
I have the CX-5. I used to drive an X5. Parking sensors are for people who can't drive. The lines on the backup camera are all you need to gauge distance perfectly. 9 feet. 6 feet. 3 feet. It's that simple. When parallel parking you turn the wheel all the way and reverse until the first colored line just touches the curb on your screen. Stop. Straighten out the wheels. Reverse back until the second colored line touches the curb. Stop. Turn your wheel all the way in the other direction. Reverse back until you are parallel with the curb. Stop. Straighten out your wheels. You are done. The cameras with the fancy moving lines that move as you turn the wheel actually make parking harder. Not easier. The Mazda approach is the best way to do it. Toyotas have the same camera. You don't need any retarded beeping sensors. That said, the blindspots on the CX-5 are horrendous and are almost a deal breaker for me. The BSM system mitigates that somewhat but I drive in NYC traffic and you can't rely on the BSM seeing the bicyclists with a death wish who live here. I wish the CX-5 had BMW levels of visibility but that's the only complaint I have. I would not buy a BMW SUV again. These things just never handle like performance cars. Paying the BMW premium for a bus was a mistake of my youth....Won't repeat. The new CRV is probably a better buy than the CX5 now....
Everyone is going to have different experiences using technology like this. To say parking sensors are for people who can’t drive is a little ignorant, considering parking sensors are used when parking, not really driving. I found and still find the parking sensors on my 7 Series to be insanely helpful when parallel parking on a street, or just backing into a spot. With a long car I prefer to be as close to the back of my spot’s line as possible, and if there’s a car behind the sensors make it super easy to figure out where my car ends.
MAZDA ALL DAY. I drive them for work at enterprise & this vid didn't do the Mazda justice at all. The ride is as amazing. Everything you touch is leather, so comfy so new. Just a nice place to be. Beamers are harsh rides & overrated
Very interesting! I'm surprised it doesn't do that for us, what type of media are you listening to (USB, Bluetooth) and if it's through a phone, what kind?
UPDATES: US MARKET: CX-5 GT Reserve and Signature have 250 HP. /320 ft.lb. torque 2.5 L. turbo engines and AWD. The Signature (the top model) has 360 degree camera, chocolate Nappa leather seats, console and door trim and real wood interior trim. BUT the CX-5 has a better reliability rating from Consumer Reports (Much Better Than Average, their top rating).
We've featured a number of newer CX-5s with the 2.5T engine. They've definitely added a lot to that vehicle to make it even more appealing since we did this Showdown.
Just imagine sitting down in the evening after car shopping and purchasing the BMW and realizing that you just spent $20,000 MORE on it than you would have if you'd gotten the Mazda. Just think about that. Twenty. Thousand. Dollars. More.
All to join the prestigious club of owning a BMW. Sometimes it's worth it, but after we re-did this Showdown with the X1 it became even easier to see why some of these vehicles are purely about the badge alone.
The CX-5 right now is killing it in terms of style! The luxury brands like to stick to traditional design languages, whereas Mazda is getting very creative and pushing themselves beyond the basics.
Last CX-5 model had parking sensors. I don't see why you need parking sensors when you already have a rear backup camera. I can clearly see where my bumper is and how close its going to touch the object including the corners. A backup camera is all you need. I wonder how cars parked back then before backup cameras existed. You mind as well get a car that can autonomously park itself if that is such a big deal for you. I'll have a backup camera over sensors that make annoying beeping noises whenever I'm 3 feet away from an object.
That's great that you don't need them, everyone is different. I'm used to parking sensors only because it's what I've been driving for 2 years prior to this. The backup camera specifically on the CX-5, but on other cars also, has a wide fisheye which makes the corners impossible to accurately align in a garage. Often I'll back cars up with a camera and feel I'm going to hit the corner on the angled wall in our Studio A, yet jump out to see I have 2 feet of clearance. Parking sensors when equipped with a visible guide on-screen is ideal, like BMW has been doing for nearly a decade. The 7 Series BMW I drive has never had a problem backing into a spot sans-camera. Parking Sensors get me into tight spaces easily, cameras do not. Your mileage may vary.
You guys in NA got hacked with some details. In other markets (central america for example) the Mazda Infotaintment system does have Album Art and also has power folding mirrors on versions above the most basic one. Also GT versions do have standard parking sensors front and back.
Good comparison, trying to find something to replace my money pit Range Rover Sport with, but still need the space. PS It's a "Head Up Display", not Heads Up, big difference in meaning!
Yes, we've since corrected that. Most video games use a HeadS up display, hence or use of that term, but any recent episodes you'll notice we've dropped that S. Thanks!
Good question. I'm only 6 foot so it might not be the best way to tell, but there's still quite a bit of travel for the driver's seat to go back when I'm driving.
The Mazda comes a lot closer in price to the BMW with the diesel engine offered for the 2019 model year. We just featured it a few weeks back, price was about $7,000 more than this GT, but with the price of diesel versus gas the Mazda doesn't make sense. Better off sticking with the CX-5 gas.
much prefer the CX-5 for reliability, cost of purchase and ownership and value... no contest. Also I much prefer the looks of the CX-5, the X3 is just blah. Mazda has just upped their game in the last few years, i'm really impressed by their offerings. Also realize that the CX-3 similarly equipped not only is **signficantly** more expensive but BMWs have horrible resale value and are worth practically nothing after 5 or so years so your cost of ownership is much much higher.
Very good points. It's why we chose the CX-5 for sure, the X3 was on the list but just couldn't justify the extra $20k. Even in the resale market it doesn't feel like it's worth it for the BMW.
That could certainly be interesting, and they'll have to start looking at hybrid and full electric technology soon, as they're one of the few manufacturers that has absolutely no options in the hybrid/electric market.
That's true! It definitely seems to be a brand based on name only. We've been very happy with harmon/kardon on the mid-range BMWs and had the chance to hear the Bowers & Wilkins with the 2016 750Li a couple years ago. There's certainly more option for car audio now, but the manufacturers end up getting the exclusivity with one over the other. We've heard good things about the Burmester system in the Mercedes S-Class as well.
You can buy two Mazda CX-5 crossovers for the cost of one comparable BMW. So why would anyone who is not filthy rich choose a BMW? I guess some people really need that BMW badge as a status symbol.
Everyone's going to have their own opinion when it comes to this, that's for sure. Both cars have pros and cons, it all comes down to what's important for the individual who's looking at them.
i think the interior of newer bmws just looks horrible :/ like they cant decide if they want to design something elegant, sporty or rather a spaceship.
In Europe and Japan, however here in Canada they do not offer it on the 2017 or 2018 model years. We've read through some documents leaked about the 2019 model year, and these features are supposed to make their way to Canadian market vehicles.
I wonder what legal issue they ran into with parking sensors in NA. They are fitted most other territories so it's odd that you don't get them there which means the reason will likely be an illogical one based on the law.
It's very strange to us too. We've had a couple comments saying that rear sensors are a dealer-installed option in the USA, but there's nothing about it on the Canadian website. The CX-9 has rear sensors from the factory with the GT and Signature trims.
Look it's in depth and a good review on cars, you cover a lot of area's well. But it's irrelevant, it's just not "apples for apples" comparing different year models is simply not the way forward.
We continue to get comments about the CX-5 in the European market having parking sensors. Please note both vehicles in this review are Canadian cars, and we are a Canadian show. We do not cover vehicles outside of Canada, and since the sensors are not available here we cannot talk about features we don't get.
In the US parking sensors are a dealer installed option.
incredible that you don't get them !
PRN Canuks can obviously park better than the rest of over in in Europe!
obviously canadian parking slot are bigger than europe :D

Just purchased a 2018 Mazda CX-5. Love it. It's the best driving and nicest looking SUV available for the money. Thank you Mazda for not ruining your cars with CVTs!
That's actually a really good point! A lot of the other Japanese auto makers are going with CVTs now for their entire lineup, and while the 6 speed auto is a little older than most, it beats a CVT any day.
If you're considering a 17/18 CX5...just DO it. It'll be some of the best money you'll ever spend. It's a lot more upscale than the price would suggest, fun to drive, decent on gas, the new G-vectoring is very cool, it's a great road trip vehicle...and you won't have to live with the whole 'BMW - The Official National Vehicle Of Douchebag Drivers' stigma. lol
Rob Brown 😂
😂🤣😅
Literally only douche bags drive BMWs. Especially in Toronto and GTA. Screw the cars
Well said!
I have a cx5 and my stepdads x5 rattles so much more and there's less in the front seats, plus cheaper maintenance.
I have a 2021 carbon edition turbo cx 5 with awd. They finally updated the infotainment. Now its 10.3 inch screen and remote start is standard now. Loving it
Glad to hear it! We here in Canada don't get the updated infotainment system for this model year unfortunately.
Did the 1st Gen cx5 handle better than the 2nd Gen? As it's lighter and the were more less focused with nvh in the 1st.
That's certainly true.
Perfectly stated; case closed.
I feel like buying BMW is like paying extra for a "luxury brand" on your t shirt.
100 % fucken agree
you can't afford bmw that's why
Mazda is better and better. I like Mazda design.
So do we! And even though they've got a standard design language throughout their product lineup, it's still easy to distinguish which model is which. As a BMW enthusiast I still have trouble with the new 7 Series vs. 5 Series, and the X3 and X5, they look too similar now.
Mazda looks way better in my opinion.
We like the look of it too. It will be interesting to see how the X3 F25 compares when the next generation comes out. The first gen X3 looks very dated when compared with the new one, I imagine this one will suffer the same fate.
Agree
BeastPieDie 6000.... yes you r right!!!

interesting comparison.
PRN In BMW range, the X1 is the real rival for the CX-5. The X3 is in a different league...
Hi, how much u paid for cx5? What trim level?? Im about to buy one soon
Ours is the one in the video, the MSRP for the GT trim and tech package was shy of $37,000CAD.
How'a the reliability?
Thanks! We had a lot of fun putting this one together and really getting an idea of what makes these cars different, and what makes them the same.
The CX-5 looks amazing! We own one and could not be happier
Glad to hear it! We still think it's one of the best compact crossovers on the market today.
Hi, here in Europe we get the back up camera and front and back parking sensors.
Must be nice! It's strange they don't offer it over here, it was a disappointment for us.
Yea, they respect us more. :D
In the states, all Mazdas have the option of back up sensors as a dealer installed accessory.
The new Mazda3 is a really solid little car, I really enjoyed the one I drove a couple years ago.
Glad to hear it!
the 2019 CX5 is even better in my opinion, still super attractive, and now includes many more features that weren't available in 2017. Definitely a great choice for the its price.
Mazda has been improving the CX-5 each model year, the 2019 has a lot to offer now!
The CX-5 in Japan and other markets have parking sensors and auto folding mirrors.
So we've heard from other commenters, however we live in North America and that's where it's unavailable.
Yes I have CX5 2014 model in UK and it has all round parking sensors, folding mirrors and rear camera. & loving it.
Glad to hear from someone who's had both! We love our CX-5 also, even though we don't get to drive it enough.
The new sky active x engine coming in 2019 is a game changer , do the review over again then and include the engines please !
We'll do what we can! We're working to get more access to new vehicles, our hope is as the channel grows we'll be able to get them!
I think you can get backup sensors on the USA. The Mazda CX5 is a good value with a driver-centered cockpit that is comfortable with good materials. Visibility over that long hood is an issue as is the smaller storage space aft.
It does appear to be a dealer-installed option in the US from some of the other comments we’ve received, but not here in Canada.
I own a 2016 CX-5 + 335i sport package convertible...I like the Mazda for everyday driving. Mazda handling is 90% of my BMW with 100% more reliability
Well said! Most people don't own both brands, but it's good that you have some solid experience with both.
We do see a lot of people using their first gen CX-5s to tow trailers or campers. The hitch we bought isn't for towing, just for accessories.
i love mazda
We love ours!
Mazda Is one of the best, but BMW Is an step over Mazda.
We really like the older BMWs, both for design and affordability. We'll probably end up doing the same, not going back to BMW.
Good video! I enjoyed it and its very informative. Keep that good work
Thanks! We wanted to do something different with this one and figured this would make for a great comparison.
We thought so too! But there's a good chance they'll offer them in Canada for the newer models, considering it seems every other market has them.
We finally drove the diesel CX-5, you're right the BMW was quieter.
Mazda looks and feels so much better than the BMW.
Mazda is 6 months or 8,000kms for maintenance. And a BMW oil change is $200+
Have a CX 5 2016 and my only disappointment is the Bose speakers being outdone by the 808's I use on my laptop.
We just put out an episode on it last week: th-cam.com/video/DtaSgnb2jJA/w-d-xo.html
I'd easily take it over the BMW X3, so far we haven't had any problems with our 2017 and we don't hear from owners with the CX-9 about the turbo 2.5L engine either.
Bill that's exactly what i was thinking.
Right now if you were in the market for a CPO 2015 X3 xDrive28d with the same options as the one we've featured, you're looking around $42,000: goo.gl/6XxvQS
There are some 2015 X3 xDrive28i models for sale around here without M Sport for $33,000 but don't come as well equipped. Lowest prices we've seen are $29,000 base model with 100k kms.
i cant understand why for north america market they call 28d a car with 180hp meanwhile in europe with the same power is called 20d
USA / Canada won't accept that a 20d badge is enough for hauling around a 2 tonne SUV. Power has always trumped economy in those markets. No bad thing.
Mazda CX-5 doesn't have power folding mirrors? I have power folding mirrors on 2014 CX-5...
And I bet you're in Europe or Japan, correct? Check the pinned comment.
So close to perfection
Very pleasant voice, nice thorough review. Congrats!
I appreciate that, thanks! Glad you enjoyed watching.
Also much cooler names too! The CX-9's highest trim here is the Signature, which sounds pretty nice. I'd love to drive a Revolution though.
PRN Cx9 is not available in switzerland, but we have got the Mazda 2, 3, cx-3, cx-5, 6 sedan, 6 sport wagon and the two mx5's and all off them have as an option a Diesel engine, well except the mx5.
You say power folding mirrors aren't available on the Mazda? Where did you get that? My 2012 Cx5 has them.
And where do you live? As you'll see by going through the comments, different markets get different options. In fact we've pinned a comment to the top of this video that explains this. In Canada, power folding mirrors aren't offered, neither are parking sensors. In other markets like Europe they are.
Right when I posted my comment I saw your pinned comment. Forgot to delete it though, sorry about that
No worries. We've gotten a lot of comments about it since publishing the video and just want to make sure we're clear that we seem to be in a market that is less equipped than the rest of the world. It's unfortunate that we don't get these features.
Mazda is better
Yurii222 yes!
BMW drives better, looks more upscale even tho the Mazda looks luxurious sadly the quality isn’t in a long run
you can't afford bmw that's why
@@nicotang5583 You be quiet. Your opinion don't matter cause your poor ass yourself.
Great choice!
great review! How is cx-5 handling snowy conditions?
We had no issues with the CX-5 during the winter this year, it managed without any issue on pretty rough roads, and getting through unplowed parking lots with ease.
If you ask me:
I will buy 2 Mazda CX-5 instead on X3
We had hoped to find an lightly used MX-5 to show alongside the CX-5 in terms of total value, but couldn't swing it in time for filming.
you can't afford bmw that's why
In indonesia we get it fully loaded with bose and all around parking sensors. And its half priced from the x3 so its worth it.
That is really expensive! Our exchange rate is almost 1:1 also, so that's really insane.
Interesting comparison! Good stuff.
Glad you liked it, thanks!
excellent review.
The Bose is no charge with GT package. The Harman almost $900 extra . Its a no brainer .
$57K for only 1 BMW? Nah! I can get 1 Mazda CX-5 and 1 Subaru Forester for that price. Practicality wise. Imo
We had hoped to film something like that, show off another vehicle that would add up to the total of the BMW.
you can't afford bmw that's why
Because Japan car worse than Germany
@@nicotang5583 Germany engineering better than japan

Both of them looking good
That's true, they're both handsome SUVs!
Mazda looks very sharp and beautiful. Not only that, but Mazdas are way more reliable than Bmws .
So far we've had no issues with our CX-5, we did an episode to go over it after 1 year back in August of 2018.
I want to see the new CX 5 2022 and the X3 because it’s been updated
We have done an updated X3 video on it's own, but I haven't had a chance to book a CX-5 recently unfortunately.
@@PRNTestDrive oh okay, when you can, i can see that the CX 5 is pretty comparable to the X3 and has the premium interior and dimensions
Good vid !
Thanks!
damn BMW looks like from 1999
BMW has certainly been keeping a relatively straight forward design style since the 90s, so there still is some of that left in their newer models.
@@PRNTestDrive Mazda is Rolls-Royce for X3 in interior
you can't afford bmw that's why
BMW has higher quality materials. I have a cx5
Hope it's still working out well for you today!
No power mirrors or PDC on this Canadian spec CX5?! In the UK these features are standard on certain versions of Mazda 2 nevermind previous gen. CX5. It seems Canadian buyers are being deprived.
It definitely seems like it from a lot of the other commenters out there. Both were features I expected to find when we took delivery.
What no parking sensors!? Australia has front and back from mid range Touring spec and up. Hope for you guys they fix that.
We hope so too, it's a little late for us since we've bought it but I really hope they make the option available for 2018 models for Canada.
Maybe you could still get them fitted later on. Do they offer parking sensors as an optional dealer fit? The electrics and software must be set up for parking sensors already even if they're not fitted as all CX5s are built on the same factory line in Hiroshima I think. Anyhow, just a suggestion.
Good review keep it up
Thanks! We're hoping to produce more Showdown episodes like this.
How do you compare comfort in a sport package X3?
By filming what we have access to.
Could be something we could make happen, just depends on availability on the press fleets.
Mazda has parking sensors available for cx5. I’m in USA
That it does, for some reason it took until 2019 for us to get that here in Canada.
Good points, thanks for sharing!
One of the reasons we film Showdowns like this is to be different from what traditional automotive journalists are doing, rather than producing the same comparisons everyone else does we try to be a little different.
nice try my dear bmw fanboy :D
cx 5 4wd, automatic and full optional cost 40.400, for the same price you can buy a mid model x18d manual transmission or automatic rdw version.
top end 150hp turbodiesel with awd and automatic transmission cost 43k.
prices in north america looks lower than europe simply because everything is priced without tax, sale tax are added after the price list, for a brand new car or food in grocery store.
meanwhile in europe all prices are vat included, around 18-25% of tax, this explain the difference.
We published a follow up episode with a 2018 BMW X1 and the Mazda CX-5 a little while ago, I think you'll find we were more thorough on that episode!
My 2016 Mazda 3 will display the music at the top of the screen when on navigation
Very interesting! I'm surprised it doesn't do that for us, what type of media are you listening to (USB, Bluetooth) and if it's through a phone, what kind?
PRN it does it with Pandora via blue tooth and I think and radio
PRN and S8
PRN okay correction it displays nav when on the music apps
Good to know! We normally keep the navigation screen on at all times.
Disappointed about the BMW X3 front headlight, No LED Lights!
Ah but you could have LED headlights new from the factory for the low, low price of $2,000!
Exterior wise, why does the mazda look more luxurious than the luxury one?
Both great cares but cx-5 better value money vs x3 more of a fashion/wealth statement
Definitely true, the X3 is about the brand recognition/status, but also does offer some features above and beyond what Mazda has to offer.
X3 feels like driving a sport car.
And that's a great option if that's what you want out of your vehicle.
You guys in NA got hacked with some details. In other markets (central america for example) the Mazda Infotaintment system does have Album Art and also has power folding mirrors on versions above the most basic one. Also GT versions do have standard parking sensors front and back.
That's what we keep hearing, which is why we pinned our comment to the top of the video about it.
Thanks!
Amazing Comparison
Thanks!
How tall are you? As 6'7" guy I'm wondering how easy I could fit in the Mazda.
Good question. I'm only 6 foot so it might not be the best way to tell, but there's still quite a bit of travel for the driver's seat to go back when I'm driving.
PRN sounds like it may be doable haha. Thanks for the reply!
Hope it works out for you!
Definitely Mazda. 60,000 for that bmw? Ahha cute. It better be able to fly
Why would you put an 2017 Mazda with a 2013 bmw🤦🏽♀️
First off it’s a 2015 BMW.
Mazda is 100% prettier and better
I love the look of Mazda's vehicles these days, huge step up from 15 years ago!
@@PRNTestDrive Amen to that! 100% Agreed!
Nice video
Glad you liked it, thanks!
I had an CX5 and now I am having an X3. Both are great cars, but BMW Is better than the Mazda CX5, but not 20k dollars diference .
Glad to hear you've had both.
I am waiting when Mazda comes out with an Electric MX 5.
That could certainly be interesting, and they'll have to start looking at hybrid and full electric technology soon, as they're one of the few manufacturers that has absolutely no options in the hybrid/electric market.
Perpetual Radio Networks Well they have recently started looking into it...and by the concept of Kaizen...it would be something for the long run.
mazda beutyful
Definitely is!
Enjoyable comparison. On music... any audiophile, knows that Bose is crap. They've been cashing in on name only for many years.
What was not mentioned . The Bose comes with the GT package . On the BMW you must pay an extra $895 for the Harman system.
the mazda is missing the benz badge
Fair enough
You can buy two Mazda CX-5 crossovers for the cost of one comparable BMW. So why would anyone who is not filthy rich choose a BMW? I guess some people really need that BMW badge as a status symbol.
Fair enough
I found the interior of the BMW nicer than the mazda
Everyone's going to have their own opinion when it comes to this, that's for sure. Both cars have pros and cons, it all comes down to what's important for the individual who's looking at them.
SnoBoardnRN, why does anyone do anything?
i think the interior of newer bmws just looks horrible :/ like they cant decide if they want to design something elegant, sporty or rather a spaceship.
Haha. We do like a lot of what BMW's doing with the interior of these cars, we prefer a lot of the layout on it over the Mazda in this case.
I have a Mazda CX-5 it has sensores on the gt
Sweet I love the Mazda cx-5 is 2 fast car!!😌
I wouldn't say it's fast, but it does the job.
awesome thank you
We're glad you think so, thanks!
Look it's in depth and a good review on cars, you cover a lot of area's well. But it's irrelevant, it's just not "apples for apples" comparing different year models is simply not the way forward.
In a perfect world we wouldn't, but we have incredibly limited access to vehicles, so we produce videos on what we can.
