Marie Dressler was obviously one of a kind. There's been no one quite like her since and there probably won't be. She was already past sixty when she peaked and won her Oscar, and went on to make a couple of later films. She died not long thereafter.
She stole "Dinner at Eight" from everyone else in the cast, and it was a high powered cast indeed.

Dinner At Eight just IS Marie Dressler and Jean Harlow.
And that says a lot, considering it also had John and Lionel Barrymore, Billie Burke, a whole roster of legends...

It was said she had the face of the back end of a bus. However that rubber face could do more action than most actresses with their whole bodies. People loved her, and her fame bloomed so beautifully at the end of her life.

A queen, a star, an oscar winner, hollywood's #1 box office draw in the early 30s, an icon

Marie Dressler- what an innovative movie star. Older and heavier movie stars owe a lot to her.

Miss Dressler is the Queen indeed! She was unique in talent and I think she’s beautiful.

I think her performance in "Emma" was her best, but it's very rarely shown.

I just saw her in Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914) with Chaplin. Silent or talking, she was sublime.

She makes a wonderfull Queen! Her costume and court are a little over the top, but what fun! I'm so glad we have this unusual video to appreciate her rare comic talents!

I agree with you, BJ, "Min & Bill" SHOULD be out on dvd by now, after all this time any academy award winning performance should be available to the public. I caught the movie on AMC and recorded it on VHS. This clip is hilarious! Ms. Dressler's expressions really crack me up!

She honed her gorgeous, precise, skill on the vaudeville stage around 1910 and earlier- Weber and Fields etc. I wish Yip Harburg had written these lyrics.

I have watched this a few times and laugh harder every time, her weight killed the horse. Too funny. Talent on all levels, I get the feeling she was very kind wise and helpful.

    I love it!!!
"Once as Lady Godiva I was seen
The poor nag died of course
    Not from shame or deep remorse;
'Twas my weight that killed the horse!
    Still I'm the queen!"

Well, the first commercial one The Jazz Singer set the precedent in 1927 and nowadays we can all thank that for allowing sound to thrive.
