But surely, we have no way of knowing that? 18th century society was much more theatrical and declamatory in its manners; just look at its sense of dress. It was a theatrical society, as its etiquette books show. I'd say Norma Shearer's mannerisms were probably much closer to the real Marie-Antoinette's than a modern actress'.
this was supposed to be shot in early technicolor, but the budget of the costumes canceled that deal.this could have been one of norma shearers first film in color(though she did do a short scene in color in the Hollywood Revue of 1929)
@boodspuppy I think Kirsten Dunst made a very good job. Norma shearer, as much as I love the old films, is too much theatratical, and she doesn't seem at all like the true Marie antoinette. While Kirsten's way of playing is far more realistic and faithful to history.

Indeed, sometimes I wish we could speak and gesticulate this way without looking like weirdos
(I actually do, but some friends call me weirdo)
All of the grand gestures you see in ballet literally came from the manners of this time, so yes, they were theatrical and declamatory.
Actually we do know that they did not expect to be like that. There are countless stories of how you were to behave at Court.

Norma Shearer specifically requested Tyrone Power but he was under contract at 20th Century Fox. MGM had to pay Fox a small fortune to loan him out.

On the contrary, by the time, people use to be more theatrical with their speaking and gesticulating, it was a very theatrical society
