I was skiing the trees with a buddy in Whistler about 35 years ago and he fell into a tree well. It was a terrible experience for him. I was laughing as I dug him out, only afterwards did I realise what danger he had been in. Back then nobody was talking about the risk involved with tree wells, I'm happy to see videos such as this informing skiers of this phenomenon.
Few points here: - never go alone - always, ALWAYS keep each other in sight.ALWAYS. It's too easy to ski past someone in a tree well and not noticing anything. - have a beacon at all times - have a probe - have a BIG shovel. Remember, time is an issue and it takes just a few minutes for someone without air to die. And there's something 99% of the people don't have, including ski patrol, and could make THE difference. Small snowshoes attached to your backpack. Why? If you miss the skier in trouble and only realize later and DOWNSLOPE they are missing. How are you going to go back into powder snow? Small snowshoes with a quick attach system may do the difference.
Tree wells also occur when two or three younger trees 12’ to 20’ tall grow close together create a cave between them, completely invisible and extremely dangerous.
Don't worry. Tree wells are a danger mainly to advanced skiers who ski in deep, ungroomed powder. There is no danger for beginner, intermediate or even advanced skiers as long as they stay on groomed trails within a ski area.
Here's another video of a rescue that happened just a few days ago. A complete stranger happened to notice a snowboard sticking out of the snow while skiing through the trees. I'm no professional, but I'd guess this guy would have been dead in a few more minutes if he hadn't come along. th-cam.com/video/wQ8Kgb_XUkk/w-d-xo.html
Deep, powder does not favor snowboarders. Stop moving and odd trouble exists where a skiier can sidestep and escape. In either case, stepping out of bindings can drop you another two feet in the snow. If you were already near hip deep, that's trouble. Turn that trouble upside down? Oof. Please ski with a partner and stick together.
It's a place where a transceiver (a beacon) is hidden, most likely buried under the snow, so that people can practice finding it using their own transceivers.
Lots of people have died in tree wells. Speaking of girls, within the past 10 years or so, at least one girl died in a tree well at Mt. Bachelor (Oregon). Another died at Jackson Hole (Wyoming). I heard of a woman who died in a tree well at Mammoth Mountain about 12 years ago, but I haven't heard of any more recent event. Many more men than women have died in tree wells. This happens at almost every ski area where the lifts provide easy access to ungroomed snow in the trees.

Yes you have my permission to use my video about tree wells. It's for the sake of safety. The more people know about this danger, the better.

Spot on, I would start every presentation on the dangers of the wells with that footage, people will be paying close attention after watching it.
Also at Mt Baker!
Thank you
You can have all the buddies you want. But if you are last in the group noone will see which of 50 trees you are under.
Gwyn used to be my boss. She’s pretty cool
Hey! Really?!
It's almost like mother nature booty traps people.
Did you mean booby trap?

What the hell is a beacon park?

So like tinder for lonely beacons
Didn’t a girl die at mammoth a fee year ago in a treewell?
