Death, the Devil, and Halloween Triple Series (Part 3, 3 of 8) This track is from their fourth (and I think best) studio album, 1981’s “Juju.” It’s about the British serial killer known as “The Yorkshire Ripper,” who killed 13 women between 1975 and 1980. He was identified as Peter Sutcliffe and captured during the album’s recording. The perception by the police that he was only killing prostitutes (many were but not all, especially as the killings progressed) delayed a serious investigation and led to the first “Reclaim the Night” marches there in the late 70s.

This is one of my favorite songs from Siouxsie and The Banshees. It's so dark and trippy... I've heard that it's based on some murder in a hospital, that would explain a lot from the lyrics (night shift sisters) and the creepy images.

@@Aurora-uq5hm The Sutcliffe case was the trigger but intentionally it sounds like a Ripper-type killer from any time-period

You guys are way too excited about this stuff. You're pretty good actors, I'm not sold that you're actually this blown away by this music but I guess you get views for your intensity LOL. And it's cool you're getting into Souxsie :)

This track was written by Siouxsie about Peter William Sutcliffe (2 June 1946 - 13 November 2020) was an English serial killer who was dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper (an allusion to Jack the Ripper) by the press. Sutcliffe was convicted of murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven others between 1975 and 1980.[2]: 144  He was sentenced to 20 concurrent sentences of life imprisonment, which were converted to a whole life order in 2010. Two of Sutcliffe's murders took place in Manchester; all the others were in West Yorkshire.
Sutcliffe initially attacked women and girls in residential areas, but appears to have shifted his focus to red-light districts because he was attracted by the vulnerability of prostitutes and the perceived ambivalent attitude, at the time, of police to prostitutes' safety. His reign of terror had multiple towns and cities across the north of England paralysed with fear, especially amongst the female population, the Yorkshire police were subsequently investigated and reviewed, with the conclusion that misogynistic attitudes prevailed amongst the force at that time which probably hindered clear thinking and investigations before Sutcliffe’s arrest, he had slipped through the police investigations several times prior to his eventual arrest. This is a very dark song about an ugly subject.A tragic song about total police incompetence and one psychopath serial killer.
