New player here! Had a generic Frenzy barb who was struggling in act 2 nightmare mode until I watched your "Singer Barb" video. I did a respec like you suggested and got CRAZY lucky with 2 spirit swords (35% cast rate on my first, and 34% on my second). Now I'm just PLOWING through nightmare! Thank you for your videos and all the help!
Fun fact: Diablo in hell has the highest chance of dropping a monarch, which is obviously the reason why you'll most probably get it from any other monster in chaos or ancient tunnels or any other high density area. There are just not that many Diablos in chaos sanctuary and there are a lot of other monsters that can drop a monarch with a not much lower chance than Diablo has.
hell cows is best spot for monarchs compare to all other places in game currently bosses dont drop grey items vs cows drop tons of them. even to get a hell boss to drop a grey or white not much chance cows do it easy. reguardless of mf amounts
Crypt/mausoleum by blood raven has a 1/6000 chance to drop monarch from any mob. Usually farm that for a couple hours and I have one before I even best act 1. Not to mention there’s an armor rack that spawns as well.

As another tip. Since we now have Shared Stash without PlugY you can just make a one off character to run for the socket quest if you don't want to chance it with the cube. Not the quickest way but is guaranteed.
Indeed, i've been thinking of doing that I wonder which class would be the fastest to do so and what would be the fastest way to do it if you have a friend, like if he creates a tp to andariel in act 1 on your new char will it give you the quest to kill it and unlock act 2, before doing the same thing until you reach act 5 ?
@@Tyjerr Have no idea about getting someone to take you to the act bosses. But if by yourself fastest will be Sorceress followed by Assassin. Sorceress because of Teleport of course but has to wait till 18 but Assassin has burst of Speed at level 6.
@@mr.voidroy6869 yep a lvl 30 freind can just rush you to the larzuk quest in an hour or less. If you wanted to spend the money you texhnically could have a second account on a laptop qnd rush 20 characters through the game. It also would give you 23 more pages of stash space :D

Love the guide although i remember from way back when, that larzon was usally something you wanted to save for unique unsocked items, but i suppose now that you dont need mule accounts to swap over, that the quest there might be less important, since it's fast to level one over in normal and do it that way?
@@nebojsakmezic9763 It's counterproductive. MF increases your chance of getting magic/rare/unique/set items and you can't make runewords out of those. Less MF => more white/gray items => higher chance of getting the base you want

Thanks for your advice! I was able to get a white crystal sword and use the socket recipe to make a Spirit for my trap assassin. I then got lucky on a 4 socket halberd drop to make an insight for my merc. A better polearm base would be nice, but the runes are fairly common so I can find another in the future.
Same i made insight in q halbred for my merc, its not great for my paladin but ita the most damage ive found so far i will probably switch it over to my sorceress when i find a replacment or make malice
If you have a friend (or 2 accounts) it only takes ~1/2 an hour to get a fresh character to normal A5 and do the Larz quest. Its likely going to be faster to create a quick mule, rush to A5, do the quest and get max sockets then taking the gamble on the cube recipe and potentially having to re-farm your base (IE Monarch). I did this all the time to get all my unique gear its sockets.
People that say to use the socket quest to make an insight or a spirit is bad advice. Use the cube to socket that stuff and just wait until you get the runes and gems to socket an item to make an insight/spirit. Do not use the quest to socket stuff that can be socketed with the cube. Save the quest. Do not listen to them. The socket quest is way more valuable than a spirit or an insight. Save the socket quest to socket a shako, Griffons, or something more important. Only use the socket quest for end game gear. Cause that is the only way to socket that stuff. But you can find other ways to get an insight/spirit. But you can't socket your shako with the cube. Trust me. It might take longer to get that stuff in the early game. But you will be thanking me when your playing in the end game. People that tell you to use the socket quest for an insight/spirit are just telling you to waste your socket quest. Even if you get 3 per character... Trust me it's not worth it. I wish I didn't listen to this advive. I have so many 4 socket elite polearms, 4 socket shields (paladin and monarch), and 4 socket swords (anywhere from phase blade to longswords) that I don't know what to do with them. But I have so many end game items (unique and other wise) that I need to socket and that can only be socketed with the quest. So just don't do it.
I've been running both Mausoleum and Ancient tunnels for the last few days to find a damn monarch. Today I found Tal's body in Mausoleum... RNG is broken :D

If you just progress through the game you can find bases in act 1 nightmare. White items dropped in there max at 4os. This way you have a chance at getting the bases you need during your playthrough without having to do extra farming.

Once you have your first insight, you should aim for a Colossus Voulge to replace it. I usually try to aim for 2x Great Poleaxe. 1x insight + 1x crescent moon. Cheap Fast boss clearing merc.

I used my normal socket quest on a crystal sword for Spirit and my nightmare quest on an eth bill for Insight. I think it's OK to spend the quests this way for your first char and use it more sparingly for later characters. Both add immense QoL for my MF sorc.
A 4 open socket spirit base is not that hard to find in cows. It's not worth wasting a larzuk quest on it imo. A monarch is a different story, but even then I'd still try and farm it myself for awhile before giving in. But these 4os normal swords are so easy to find in cows, especially if you're not picky about the type of weapon it is. Insight is a low-costing runeword I am happy to roll on any type just to get one up and running. I can always make a better one later. I'm not wasting a Larzuk on that either.
@@Katie-hb8iq Can normal cows drop crystal swords with 4 open sockets? (i dont want to waste quest). What about Paladin shields with 4 open sockets by default can normal cows drop that or only nightmare? And do the resists stay on the paladin sheilds after u runeword them?
@@LordBattleSmurf it was mentioned in this video that any paladin shield past normal cows can roll 4 slots. Also, the shield does retain it’s resist stat afterwards.
@@LordBattleSmurf I'm not sure if they will be 3os in normal cows, but there is no rush either. Just keep playing nightmare difficulty and I absolutely promise you that you will find 4os polearm and 1-handed weapon just going through the game. Nightmare cows can also drop the 4os white bases too. I found my 4os War Scythe in Act 2 Nightmare and my first 4os Crystal Sword in Act 3 Nightmare, and I gotta say, I wasn't missing them before this. Just a little bit of patience on my part saved me 2 socket quests. The nice thing with Diablo 2 is that after you grind through normal and get to level 30, the game gets a lot easier anyway. You get frozen orb or some skill that just wrecks the content and makes it very easy. You can afford to be patient and get these items naturally. Don't waste a socket quest on this... really disagree with Lama on this one. Being able to socket a unique item is a very valuable thing that is not replicated by any other means in the game. And I personally find grinding a new character to act 5 just to get another socket quest to be a big pain in the ass - takes me like 6-8 hours to run through the game. You find a 4os base a lot sooner than replaying through the game on normal, and will be getting better drops along the way :/ For a sorc, reasonable end-game gear means you will want to socket tal orb, tal helm and tal armor, which means you will need all 3 socket quests in order to achieve that. Wasting socket on larzuk just means you lose out on some resistances or magic find that you will really need later. There's also a lot of things you can do in nightmare to make the game a lot easier. You can shop gloves, belts and boots from Gheed in Act 1. I found lots of resist/magic find items or just high resist items. They totally take the pressure off making these runewords early. Don't worry, spirit and insight are really good and won't be obsoleted regardless of when you make them.

It is still unclear if Normal Cows can drop a Crystal Sword or a Polearm with 4 sockets ALREADY in them? Conflicting information everywhere online. So far I haven't seen this drop. I want both a Sprit and an Insight but I only got 1 Larzuk quest and I don't have Amn runes for the cube recipe.
Hey all! I asked this question on another video but figured I’d ask here as well to help extend my reach. But I played this into the ground as a kid bet never knew the importance of runes. So here’s a question I can’t find an answer to. If I’m looking at making some of these basic pieces such as Steel, Stealth, Lore, Ancients Pledge, etc. about how long will that last me until I need to upgrade? I mean, if I make/equip them at the beginning of Act 2 Normal, obviously by mid Act 3, there will be better armor to equip. Is that when I should try to go to the next tier of runes and create better armor/Runewords or are the basic items I make in Act 2 good enough t to last me through that difficulty? This may be a silly question but just trying to understand upgrading better. Thank you!
At least for me, i was using stealth and ancients pledge that i made in normal until i hit hell. I would farm countess runs in nightmare until i either had enough to upgrade (say to get smoke for nightmare) If you have a TAL and ETH rune you could also make that for a shield and its okay (but ancients pledge is better for res) After that it was just more RNG to find the bases or just go back to normal shops.
@@asharper Defense matters a little on non-casters without shields but I don't think it's an important stat in general. It only decreases the chances of an enemy hitting you, right? (I'm new to the series but have been reading up a lot on the mechanics to understand them better since they're pretty odd compared to what we have nowadays)
sick mane. I will farm cows tomorrow for the crystal or broad sword and use the lazurk socket q for 4 socks. But dont have thul rune yet. But my necros wand is shit and spirit sword would be a HUGE upgrade (im only lvl 26)
Enigma is an end-game item. Not something that’s attainable right now. You’ll just have to sink a lot of points into str. There is a lot of good alternatives though.
I haven't gotten a great merc weapon for insight yet (4 socket Bill or something?). However, I did roll a massive 35fcr 4os crystal sword. Holy crap!!!
Yo dude! Great content. Could you do a tips for hardcore besides the obvious? Recommended starter builder. Build difference, good item that are worse in softcore.
I think it's better to ask someone who actually plays hardcore and not just occasionally runs it. Llama is pretty good at not dying and you can definitely learn a lot from watching him play, but his tips for how to stay alive and gearing up in hardcore for a character you'd like to keep will be very limited.
Lol 😂 same I have one tab full of gems one full of runes and one miscellaneous shit that is decent uniques and other shit lol it would have been better with 3 personal tabs so you get more storage from one char because we’re still gonna be making mules and lots of them
You got it wrong at 9:07 50% is for weapons, shields has a max of 4 NOT 6 sockets. So regarding shields, if you have an item that can only have 2 sockets, there's a 3/4 chance of getting 2 sockets and a 1/4 chance of getting 1 socket. As some people have stated in the comments, don't rush guides just to get them out there. Many mistakes are made when rushing things and not making a script of what to say.
What would you think the best use of Charsi's Imbue of each difficulty? I would imagine probably just boots, belts and gloves, due to them being the only items that don't come with sockets for Runewords. And at least until better Unique items come alone.
I always go for high ilvl tiaras and diadems. For things like boots belts and gloves, you will easily find uniques or sets that are pretty much best in slot anyway. Not to mention you can mass craft boots belts and gloves if you're looking for specific attributes not found on any unique or set piece. On the other hand, if you charsi a diadem and roll a gg rare, it could be worth a fortune from the right buyer, or use it yourself as the best in slot equip. eg. +2 skills / FCR / resists+stats

@@iheliocrati9527 Ok, so I'm genuinely not trying to sound condescending, but it seems like you're not nearly at the point where you should be thinking of rolling GG diadems to sell for mass HRs or anything like that. For one thing, diadems won't even drop until late in Hell, not to mention you're gonna need a solid understanding of endgame-ish meta (including PvP builds) and the economy to successfully trade one away. For now, I would say just focus on getting your first character through Hell, up to level 80-ish and do the "basic" way of building up wealth, like Meph runs. You can just save the Charsi quests for later, or just use them now on whatever equipment slot you need to upgrade to help you progress through NM and Hell. If you're just starting NM, there's a good chance you're still using some magic boots or belt for example, and just rolling a nice rare with good resists can mean the difference between having a good time through NM or having negative resists and getting 1shot by every lightning enchanted enemy. You may even want to imbue whatever circlets or coronets you find in NM because you still have a pretty good chance of rolling ones with +skills and/or good stats and resists, and that will likely be your best in slot until you get stuff like Shakos. For now, definitely just focus on getting your first character online and just enjoy the game. You can worry about stuff like min maxing and the economy later.
I don't even know about the ilvl thingy. I just go to the cow level, farmed a crystal sword, go to Larzak and got 4 sockets. If I have gotten it from Act2/3 I would have wasted a Larzak and gotten 3 sockets instead. Bless my novice luck!

What's a reasonable polearm base to use for Insight? I want my mercenary to be doing some damage, so I should be aiming to find socketed exceptional/elite items right?
I just found a 4 socket superior broadsword with increased durability on the ground at the back of the room Andariel is in at the end of Nightmare act 1.
Wait so you can only use the Larzuk quest 3 times per character so don't you have to be wise in choosing the items you want to be socketed? Which ones are preferred?
I have been having trouble with the insight rune word where the meditation aura will turn off and on every 3 seconds or so, so I'm constantly hearing the "EeeEEeEee" of the meditation aura over and over and over and over and over. When I look it up nobody has the same problem as me, so I have no idea what to do about it. Has anyone else had the same problem as me?
For a caster class, where would they get the 156 strength to use a monarch? Is there a point when should one stop pumping strength and get the rest with gear?
I made the mistake of Insighting a spear. I saw that my merc could use it and didn't notice that the runeword didn't work on spears. I quadruple checked the order and then saw that I had the wrong class of weapon.
Larzuk will always give you the maximum possible number of sockets. The maximum number of sockets is decided by a) the item type (ie broad swords can NEVER get more than 4 sox) and b) its item level. 1-25, 26-40, 41+. Check diablo wiki for a chart with items and what max number sockets they can have. But yes, norm cows is ilvl 28 and that's 26+. 26+ broad swords can get 4 sox. Larzuk guaranteed. Cube recipe 50/50.
I only play single player off line characters (no battlenet). I have been reading online posts that the Spirit runeword only works for ladder (online play). If so this is very important for off line players to note. It's be very disappointing to work hour for the needed Spirit runeword only to find your have failed.
D2R has all RW, drops, and endgame events activated for offline and non-ladder characters currently. Disregard those notes as they are for the original game that is 20 years old.
Plugy made it as simple as also act 5 can be good for Crystal swords. I brought that into d2r and wrecked my larzuk quest twice. Crystal sword from frigid didn't work or worldstone
Make item libary wher you can collect items and lock(not usable any more) them for collection so you have incentive to collect all set items, perfect uniques,rune words, etc.

I use to get monarch drops from mephisto in hell all the time when I was Magic binding/farming

This video just saved me from trying to socket quest a kite shield in A5 Normal haha
Also maybe worth mentioning that when grinding for RW bases it's good to have as low MF as possible.

Got my earliest Monarch in Hell, Mausoluem/Crypt (burial grounds). They are often undervalued/overlooked areas for farming.

But I have so many end game items (unique and other wise) that I need to socket and that can only be socketed with the quest. So just don't do it.

If you just progress through the game you can find bases in act 1 nightmare. White items dropped in there max at 4os. This way you have a chance at getting the bases you need during your playthrough without having to do extra farming.

Secret Cow Level . You enter it after killing Baal. Combine Town Portal book with Wirt Leg (in Tristram) in Cube to open portal in Rogue Camp.
Once you have your first insight, you should aim for a Colossus Voulge to replace it. I usually try to aim for 2x Great Poleaxe. 1x insight + 1x crescent moon. Cheap Fast boss clearing merc.

I used my normal socket quest on a crystal sword for Spirit and my nightmare quest on an eth bill for Insight. I think it's OK to spend the quests this way for your first char and use it more sparingly for later characters. Both add immense QoL for my MF sorc.
A 4 open socket spirit base is not that hard to find in cows. It's not worth wasting a larzuk quest on it imo. A monarch is a different story, but even then I'd still try and farm it myself for awhile before giving in. But these 4os normal swords are so easy to find in cows, especially if you're not picky about the type of weapon it is.
Insight is a low-costing runeword I am happy to roll on any type just to get one up and running. I can always make a better one later. I'm not wasting a Larzuk on that either.
@@Katie-hb8iq Can normal cows drop crystal swords with 4 open sockets? (i dont want to waste quest). What about Paladin shields with 4 open sockets by default can normal cows drop that or only nightmare? And do the resists stay on the paladin sheilds after u runeword them?
@@LordBattleSmurf it was mentioned in this video that any paladin shield past normal cows can roll 4 slots. Also, the shield does retain it’s resist stat afterwards.
@@LordBattleSmurf I'm not sure if they will be 3os in normal cows, but there is no rush either. Just keep playing nightmare difficulty and I absolutely promise you that you will find 4os polearm and 1-handed weapon just going through the game. Nightmare cows can also drop the 4os white bases too.
I found my 4os War Scythe in Act 2 Nightmare and my first 4os Crystal Sword in Act 3 Nightmare, and I gotta say, I wasn't missing them before this. Just a little bit of patience on my part saved me 2 socket quests.
The nice thing with Diablo 2 is that after you grind through normal and get to level 30, the game gets a lot easier anyway. You get frozen orb or some skill that just wrecks the content and makes it very easy. You can afford to be patient and get these items naturally.
Don't waste a socket quest on this... really disagree with Lama on this one. Being able to socket a unique item is a very valuable thing that is not replicated by any other means in the game. And I personally find grinding a new character to act 5 just to get another socket quest to be a big pain in the ass - takes me like 6-8 hours to run through the game. You find a 4os base a lot sooner than replaying through the game on normal, and will be getting better drops along the way :/
For a sorc, reasonable end-game gear means you will want to socket tal orb, tal helm and tal armor, which means you will need all 3 socket quests in order to achieve that. Wasting socket on larzuk just means you lose out on some resistances or magic find that you will really need later.
There's also a lot of things you can do in nightmare to make the game a lot easier. You can shop gloves, belts and boots from Gheed in Act 1. I found lots of resist/magic find items or just high resist items. They totally take the pressure off making these runewords early. Don't worry, spirit and insight are really good and won't be obsoleted regardless of when you make them.
I just found a 4 socket monarch shield on my 3rd run through of hell cows, wow the luck!
There is a rune recipe to add random sockets to any armor/wep. Way better then praying for rng drop.

It is still unclear if Normal Cows can drop a Crystal Sword or a Polearm with 4 sockets ALREADY in them? Conflicting information everywhere online. So far I haven't seen this drop. I want both a Sprit and an Insight but I only got 1 Larzuk quest and I don't have Amn runes for the cube recipe.

Hey all! I asked this question on another video but figured I’d ask here as well to help extend my reach. But I played this into the ground as a kid bet never knew the importance of runes. So here’s a question I can’t find an answer to. If I’m looking at making some of these basic pieces such as Steel, Stealth, Lore, Ancients Pledge, etc. about how long will that last me until I need to upgrade? I mean, if I make/equip them at the beginning of Act 2 Normal, obviously by mid Act 3, there will be better armor to equip. Is that when I should try to go to the next tier of runes and create better armor/Runewords or are the basic items I make in Act 2 good enough t to last me through that difficulty?
This may be a silly question but just trying to understand upgrading better.

At least for me, i was using stealth and ancients pledge that i made in normal until i hit hell. I would farm countess runs in nightmare until i either had enough to upgrade (say to get smoke for nightmare) If you have a TAL and ETH rune you could also make that for a shield and its okay (but ancients pledge is better for res) After that it was just more RNG to find the bases or just go back to normal shops.
I used my Stealth and Steel from act 2 for all of Normal and in retrospect I could've suited up in act 1 and still never needed to change that gear.

@@asharper Defense matters a little on non-casters without shields but I don't think it's an important stat in general. It only decreases the chances of an enemy hitting you, right? (I'm new to the series but have been reading up a lot on the mechanics to understand them better since they're pretty odd compared to what we have nowadays)

Enigma is an end-game item. Not something that’s attainable right now. You’ll just have to sink a lot of points into str. There is a lot of good alternatives though.

Yo dude! Great content. Could you do a tips for hardcore besides the obvious? Recommended starter builder. Build difference, good item that are worse in softcore.
I think it's better to ask someone who actually plays hardcore and not just occasionally runs it. Llama is pretty good at not dying and you can definitely learn a lot from watching him play, but his tips for how to stay alive and gearing up in hardcore for a character you'd like to keep will be very limited.

you could of mentioned that when you use ethereal sword and add sockets, it does not remove the ethereal stat.

You got it wrong at 9:07 50% is for weapons, shields has a max of 4 NOT 6 sockets. So regarding shields, if you have an item that can only have 2 sockets, there's a 3/4 chance of getting 2 sockets and a 1/4 chance of getting 1 socket.
As some people have stated in the comments, don't rush guides just to get them out there. Many mistakes are made when rushing things and not making a script of what to say.
Gonna make a backup char just to add sockets like I did back then :P
What would you think the best use of Charsi's Imbue of each difficulty? I would imagine probably just boots, belts and gloves, due to them being the only items that don't come with sockets for Runewords. And at least until better Unique items come alone.
I always go for high ilvl tiaras and diadems.
For things like boots belts and gloves, you will easily find uniques or sets that are pretty much best in slot anyway.
Not to mention you can mass craft boots belts and gloves if you're looking for specific attributes not found on any unique or set piece.
On the other hand, if you charsi a diadem and roll a gg rare, it could be worth a fortune from the right buyer, or use it yourself as the best in slot equip. eg. +2 skills / FCR / resists+stats

@@iheliocrati9527 Ok, so I'm genuinely not trying to sound condescending, but it seems like you're not nearly at the point where you should be thinking of rolling GG diadems to sell for mass HRs or anything like that.
For one thing, diadems won't even drop until late in Hell, not to mention you're gonna need a solid understanding of endgame-ish meta (including PvP builds) and the economy to successfully trade one away.
For now, I would say just focus on getting your first character through Hell, up to level 80-ish and do the "basic" way of building up wealth, like Meph runs.
You can just save the Charsi quests for later, or just use them now on whatever equipment slot you need to upgrade to help you progress through NM and Hell. If you're just starting NM, there's a good chance you're still using some magic boots or belt for example, and just rolling a nice rare with good resists can mean the difference between having a good time through NM or having negative resists and getting 1shot by every lightning enchanted enemy. You may even want to imbue whatever circlets or coronets you find in NM because you still have a pretty good chance of rolling ones with +skills and/or good stats and resists, and that will likely be your best in slot until you get stuff like Shakos.
For now, definitely just focus on getting your first character online and just enjoy the game. You can worry about stuff like min maxing and the economy later.

I don't even know about the ilvl thingy. I just go to the cow level, farmed a crystal sword, go to Larzak and got 4 sockets. If I have gotten it from Act2/3 I would have wasted a Larzak and gotten 3 sockets instead. Bless my novice luck!

Take an item that has Max 4 slots possible to the quest in act 5 reward that gives you slots

yes you can also make as many characters as you want and have a friend lvl you to the quest infinitely.

I have been having trouble with the insight rune word where the meditation aura will turn off and on every 3 seconds or so, so I'm constantly hearing the "EeeEEeEee" of the meditation aura over and over and over and over and over. When I look it up nobody has the same problem as me, so I have no idea what to do about it. Has anyone else had the same problem as me?

I made the mistake of Insighting a spear. I saw that my merc could use it and didn't notice that the runeword didn't work on spears. I quadruple checked the order and then saw that I had the wrong class of weapon.

Larzuk will always give you the maximum possible number of sockets. The maximum number of sockets is decided by a) the item type (ie broad swords can NEVER get more than 4 sox) and b) its item level. 1-25, 26-40, 41+. Check diablo wiki for a chart with items and what max number sockets they can have. But yes, norm cows is ilvl 28 and that's 26+. 26+ broad swords can get 4 sox. Larzuk guaranteed. Cube recipe 50/50.

I tried the larzuk method, I got 2 crystal swords from normal cows. He gave me 6 sockets in both.
I only play single player off line characters (no battlenet). I have been reading online posts that the Spirit runeword only works for ladder (online play). If so this is very important for off line players to note. It's be very disappointing to work hour for the needed Spirit runeword only to find your have failed.
D2R has all RW, drops, and endgame events activated for offline and non-ladder characters currently. Disregard those notes as they are for the original game that is 20 years old.
Plugy made it as simple as also act 5 can be good for Crystal swords. I brought that into d2r and wrecked my larzuk quest twice. Crystal sword from frigid didn't work or worldstone
one thing you didn't address they say spirit is for ladder only, does it actually work on offline or online non-ladder characters?

Make item libary wher you can collect items and lock(not usable any more) them for collection so you have incentive to collect all set items, perfect uniques,rune words, etc.
