I remember never having found any good rune. Played d2r like crazy and just dropped my first ever HR (Lo) in a public baal run. I was like: "Uhm... that's an Io rune, right?!". Stared at it for an eternity. Then picked it up quicker than anyone else. Lo rune. Crazy to me.
@@pascaltomasovic3586 thank goodness the rune drop rates seem improved in d2r. My highest in OG was like an ist or um and I remember having a zod somehow at one point but no one wanted to give higher than gul for it, and that was from 4-5 lvl 95 characters. Wont list off d2r drops, but they are statistically thousands of times better than my experience with the original game.
So glad to be back on the rune grind after over a decade of not playing. I remember as a kid I got a few high runes not knowing their value or purpose and wasting them in rather sad ways.. good times.
a little easier solo once you get a good map and just lower kurast. dusted off my old discs for serials and got the install files from bnet. maybe every 500 get 2 high ones.

@Cthulhu things are meant to be rare in this game. Changing that would cut down the average total playtime of everyone invested by too much to keep the game going. This is the reason its been playing well for 20 years.
@@danf8986 d2 isn't difficult. Making something take 50 hours of grinding isn't harder than something that takes 2 hours. Forcing grinding is the illusion of difficulty. [Edit, accidentally typed d3 instead of d2]
@@MoxHalite don’t think you read what I said. I didn’t say D3 was difficult at all. D3 was entirely uninteresting and boring…they spoon fed players items. I do agree that they should increase the odds of high runes dropping in D2, but I do not believe mf should affect the drop rate.
@@danf8986 I meant to say d2 is not difficult. You said it was. It's super easy, but grinds are long. Long grinds aren't hard, they are just tedious. If the difficulty of your game is based on slogging through the same boring repetitive runs for 500 hours and maybe it will pay off, that's not something to brag about.

People just starting their D2 journey are in for an insane awakening to what rare actually means. I think the rarity of some of the things in D2 is part of what makes the game great, it just makes finding an HR, a griffin, or even the OG grandfather feel so good.
When D2 was new i enjoyed the 0.000001% drop-rate dringing, but now-a-days, it's not appealing to me to spend months on end without anything to show for it, which is one of the reasons why i moved on to play Median XL, great mod with high enough drop-rates that you still have those super rares but they are farmable within 2-3 weeks.
exactly what all the guides tells you. I have found 1 ber rune in 2 years. approx 1k+ hours. So the amazon is so excelent everywhere if you have only those 2 runewords.. I hope there might be some mods for singleplayer to amp the % of runes and rarest of items that have 1:15k chance to drop if you have 400 mf. And I talk singleplayer so trades and mp would stay the same.
Guide are funny and non sens like you said. Probably like 15% of player had the chance in their life to do a last wish or infinity or enigma. Most people stops after double spirit.
@@kingheenokgaming4783 I mean I understand why it’s so hard, it makes hell difficulty feel like an actual challenge which is awesome but it does get pretty irritating especially on single element builds before you have a decent merc. Those guides are insane though, talking as if a fully stacked character is required to start farming. Of course it’s most optimal but like you said a very small portion of players are that stacked so wtf is the point 🤣
My typical farming run in D2R I start off by getting getting the leg from Tristram, Quickly kill the countess, Is lower kurast run, trav run, cows, finished out with eld/shenk in a5 and pindle. Rinse repeat. It is also important to note that upgrading runes from fal thru um speeds the process up greatly in efforts to get end game runewords.
@@WolfieeifloW I've revamped since D2R now I'm focusing on single areas due to no real down. Managed 56 trav runs in 1 hour netting a Ber rune Lo rune and Vex along with a few skill charms and random unique 😀 👌

I've found a BER rune in the room before andariel in a standard hell playthrough in single player. It was total unreal and my reaction was like MrLlama's at finishing his holy grail challenge :-) By the way: great videos !
what I appreciate about this video the most is the realistic expectation of how much time and commitment it takes to hunt for these runes and how to efficiently acquire them; this is a game that people HAVE to spend time with to get to the point. Other videos I've seen talk about dual wielding barbarians using things like dual wielding Grief swords and making it sound like it's the easiest damn thing to do...
I like that video because it's honest. High runes are hard to find and it was never meant to be otherwise. Finding one is a treat and should be spent wisely because you never know when you will find another one.

I took me years to make Infinity and Enigma on single player. So, if you are thinking of farming high runes, be mindful of that. RNG in Diablo II is hardcore.
@@AlGoYoSu I feel you! I think a lot of D2 players are like that. D2 being a 20+ years old game means most hardcore fans are in their 30s and their 40s and real life gets in the way. I kept all my single payer characters and transferred them to D2R and I am still playing with them. I don't have time to grind for thousands of hours on Bnet, so I just play offline.
@@VanTemplar Just started clean on D2R, after playing bnet or pod, pd2 for years. Only played casually 1-2 days a week. Got my son lvl 80, hell act3 atm. Found pretty good gear already: titan, string, prudence, bk ring, gheed, waterwalk, 2/20 + res rare glove & highlord wrath! She’s punching heavy. Highest rune she got is Ko but she doesn’t even need anything else to finish hell

@@seanyourhero1765 Yeah, playing online is great. The Diablo community is generally awesome. I was mostly playing single player for years and it is a pain in the butt to get some of the most high-end items.
Enigma sadly is so crucial, I would wager it's a must item for every class that can't teleport end game. Can you play without it? Sure...it just means you won't be hosting any runs on your own and it will take you 2-3 times longer to do anything solo while trying to self farm for something. If you play long enough, eventually you will get the runes or something nice to stock up and trade for an enigma. I think in my entire D2 history original release, I maybe made 1-2 enigmas and the rest were traded for with a shako + high runes i found stuff like that. Sometimes people are sitting with 4 enigmas and will take something less if its exactly what they want. You have to keep your options open to obtain it any way possible otherwise you are just limiting yourself. You might never find the runes to make enigma or only find one, but you are likely to find 3 socket mage plate, a shako, SOJ, war travelers, titans, grandfather sword, doombringer, tal rashas neck (the most valuable piece of the set), many high runes or others just below the top tier in the right conditions. on the right day, 1 of these items rolled decently enough or just 2 is enough to trade for a middle of the road enigma in one move.
@@sebastienbaeyens2358 Duping and bots, ive played the game for 10+ years and never found anything above LO rune and that was only twice(once from Cows and once from the super chest behind Mephisto)... I have better luck winning the lottery than getting high runes.
Got my Vex from a rock in NM cows (full game), didn't know it was possible to drop there. Pretty informative! Never found a zod rune with few years played in the 2003-2009 time.

First, I want to say good content Llama. A lot of the runeword/rune portion of the game is going to take a while for the newcomers to understand the concept and implement it into their game play. With that being said.. NO SHAME IN MY GAME... **I USED TO BUY HI RUNES BECAUSE I WAS NOT PATIENT ENOUGH TO FARM THEM ALL MYSELF** I want that to be clear and be transparent with all the newbies because they don't seem to fully understand how hard it is to come up on all the runes to create the items. It is possible, but it takes many many many hours of farming. It's awesome to see the servers flooded with new users. Long live D2 LOD!!!!
I had my first ist drop from a super-chest in Hell Mausoleum (Burial Grounds). Also of note: in the Bazaar and Upper-K, the rock/cement structures with East-facing entrances have non-sparkly super chests (there are usually ~2 such structures in each level). The highest drop I've ever had was a 2-person game and it was from a bone-chest(?) in Hell Chaos - a Jah!

Awesome video. Also, maybe this will help my fellow blizz sorcs, if you have a decently geared merc, you can still take down the cold immunes quite easily using blizz and ice blast while he tanks countess. As long as you have atleast 17 points into cold mastery.
Been running countess but the memory cache for maps bugs out.. Having to reset the game every 3-4 runs is annoying. Having 4 maps stacked on top of one another makes navigation impossible.
@@metinevrenkurtulus the map of your last run is layered with your current map if start and close too many games. you have to restart the game to fix this - very annoying

Lower Kurast is only worth it in players 7 or 8. And if you are specifically looking for Lo runes for some reason it has better odds for dropping them in players 5 or 6. But I always did players 7 or 8 and also got some Lo runes. Lower Kurast however is so boring to run that I don't think I can do more than 10 runs in a row now before quitting. I don't think I can do thousands of runs anymore
players 8 is pretty useless for item drops tho. same chances as players 7. the only thing that it does is make the enemies even stronger and well it does give some more exp. but if you are not grinding for levels then players 7 is the best for drops. but most of the time i guess players 1 or 3 is more efficient for the killspeeds except you run gg endgame gear.

I played this game for years, my highest rune was IST from a hell countess after a few hundreds of runs. I was happy and i traded it for an alibaba. Good Times! :)
Was super lucky and had a ber rune drop from a fallen in Tristram. Except it was during the maintenance a couple days ago. When I logged back in to my character after maintenance, of course my character was rolled back and my ber poofed. First ber drop off ever. Thanks for announcing the update ahead of time in game blizzard🙄
Used to be fucking worse too. Now ladder runewords are available on non ladder. But ahahahahaha, having to rush them on ladder..thank god they at least changed em up a bit
@@TannerCLynn no you wont lol. You can make runes with the horadric cube. You take three of the same rune and throw in a gem (gem quality depends on rune level) and it will give you one rune of the next highest quality. Its still gonna take alot of time....but not 400K runs especially when certain runes are over abundant anyway.
I started playing back when the game came out, i was probably around 12 years old, and through the years and into my teenage years, i got all kinds of uniques and runes drop, which i keep to this day on my original Necro with PlugY, but i never ever managed to build the Enigma i coveted so much, the best rune drop i probably got was a single Sur rune, back in 2013 or something. Now in 2024, i still have all my old runes sitting in my old character, so maybe it's time to finally give it another go in D2R. After all, what's another 20 years?
Cows drop about 10 runes per run. If the rune can be any type, you're likely to do well farming there if you have a good clear speed. My Javazon can clear at full speed about every 5-6 minutes, tac on getting the leg, call it 10 minutes running. You got about 60 rune rng per hour, or 1 per minute, so decent chance to get high runes that way. Got my runes there for Griffon's trade, and 18/19 Zon Torch, and that was probably a weeks runs, sprinkled in between rushing people.
that comment in the beginning is one of the reasons llama is my favorite. my perception of every other youtuber is that they just think everyone's got an enigma sitting around for just any new toon rolled and it drives me nuts.
I often am successful to find runes by doing Countess runs, Countess runs and more Countess runs at the current difficulty level. At this moment at Normal difficulty. When I have slain Normal Baal, I will do Nightmare Countess runs. When I have slain Nightmare Baal, I will do Hell Countess runs from then on. I also love to use the Horadric Cube to upgrade 3 existing runes to one rune of a higher level. Later on, I also need gems and - again - later on I need 2 instead of 3 runes for upgrading.
This game has always given me weird rng. In probably around 50,000 hours of play from when the original d2 launched before the lod expansion in the decade to follow I found 0 SOJ and a grand total of 3 HR. I actually built my wealth and gear by trading torches that I farmed non-stop after years of no return from trav, meph, chaos, and pindle runs, with a few thousand hell cows for good measure. A few near perfect p torches got me my jump start. However, I collected so many of commonly desired uniques like shako (hundreds of them) that I started giving them away to new players for free. Fun game regardless and having a blast on d2r.
if youre gonna start from scratch and youre gonna be farming mostly solo, your best bet is a Sorc, hands down (even considering the elemental immune monsters in NM and Hell). Teleport is that good of a skill for farming. so a lvl 80 sorc is going to have a much better easier time farming gear than a lvl 80 zon (provided both have around the same total gear value). imo, any non-caster class is going to have more stringent gear requirements to farm nearly as effective as a sorc. although if you farm with a trusted group, you dont need to use sorc, just one team member has to be sorc. my dream team would be a mf/gold barb, sorc, hammerdin, bone or psn necro.
In the Shared pages of the stash. Are those supposed to be accessible by all your characters? I thought that was the point, especially when you're playing single player offline but it hasn't worked for me. It also did really weird things, like I made a spirit for my sorc and logged off and when I got back it had turned into a copy of the stealth I was wearing. It also reverted all the gems I had upgraded back to chipped. Just wondering if Mr master Llama has any insight to these strange things?
I could live with a copy of stealth if my necro could access it. My sorc is an ice build anyways. I was just making runewords cause I knew diddly squat about them from back in 2008-9. I had only ever made ancients pledge once after a buddy explained to me that you could. Before I just thought most of them seemed useless except for Ral or the knock back one.
If the individual character rollbacks keep happening... then that means high rune duping will be possible if people can figure out how to trigger a rollback.
Back in the day with Diablo 2 I loved collecting Skulls. I could always get people to give me their Chipped Skulls cause they thought they were useless. Doing that I easily got Perfect Skulls for slotting 😊
If u have a friend, you can also go for hellforge runs) yo make a new char, you go from normal to hell in 20 mins, get 2 runes (from nm and hell hell’s forge quests). Repeat with new char) To skip baal quest you also would need a 3rd person who wants a boost to baalruns in exchange for baal quest. Finding that person is the most difficult part, but it’s not that hard)
you dont get from normal to hell in 20 minutes. you get from normal act 1 to act 5 in 10 minutes if you are extremely fast. that does not include a bumper for baal. normal to hell hell forge would be at least 35 minutes if you are anyone slower than the top 10 speedrunners. and the most difficult part is finding the bumpers. so realistically it would be like 50 minutes.

Yea idk if I would've nearly enjoyed d2 as much if duping or botting hadn't existed. The botting was rampant and people being dupe scammed was sad...but at the same time there'd be so few high runes available on the market that odds are you wouldn't have been able to trade for them, or you'd have to cough up a full charm inventory or some bs.
I've done a chunk of rune farming today, found 3x ko, 1x fal, 1x lem, 1x pul, 1x um, 1x ohm and 1x sur. I think that's my rune luck used up for a while
Man I feel super lucky, I watched this video and was really preparing myself to start a long grind doing lower kurust runs for my ber and Jah i need.. well my very first LK I hit a Ber rune on a random stash between structures lmfao... I was really baffled at what Happened being that it was my first time being back at hell act 3 since I started D2 again. Hilarious
Mr.LamaSC, where can I find a list of all the Rune Words? I've found a few sites that maybe 20, but I know there has to be crap tons more than this lists I'm finding.
Feel like the HR drop rates are higher by a mile, I only ever found 2 HR on original. And our group doing group chaos and the odd cows found an Ohm, a Lo and a Jah on the third night when we got to hell past the server issues. Definitely not complaining as it set us up very well, it's just super weird, or we were just insanely lucky
Today, I dropped a Ber on Meph. In the last 2 decades (minus preexpansion), I've finally dropped a high rune I've seen from a monster. I swear to God, I just thought they were manufactured by blizzard themselves and distributed to players. Never seen a high rune drop until today.
I found Vex or Ohm once doing Nm Baalwalk (don't remember well which one) All I remember is that I haven't played this character in a few weeks, and it was the first game.
Last time i played Diablo 2 was on version 1.10. by the end of the first ladder season i had as good a gear as you could have. I don‘t think i will have the time for that this time around ;)
You wont need to either...now that everything on ladder is available on non ladder I wont even waste my time. I always thought having to constantly start over was dumb anyway
@@Masmix77 I feel like they made some adjustments for D2R. It's been pretty fruitful on a lot of runs acquiring runes actually so far. Started farming NM countess and she pays out nicely. Better than I remember.
@@brandonhedges719 I farm ancient tunnels on hell for a while.. and 0 drops, no unique, sets, runes, completly nothing. This is ridiculous. In diablo 3 for all this time I spend i can make 5 sets
I currently have a lvl 70 sorc at Hell’s ancient. My merc is a baller with an Insight partizan that I found in nightmare cows. I’m still running Stealth. What upgrade should I get to further help my character? I got max lightning res but 18% fire res, so smoke is good, but I would lose the faster cast rate (I did find magefist yesterday though). Otherwise, I thought that Duress for my merc would make him even more of a killer. He already cleared the den for me, Lord de Seis, Nilathak and Anya by himself. Please share your thoughts on what body armor I should go for next.
act2 arcane followed by the tombs is also very good for high rune. The key to find those are the number of player in the game. Players 1 settings will almost never drop anything... At least players 3, but I love players 7 because of the rune drop rate.
I restarted D2 and within a week, found a Vex and a Goldwrap from a single public Nightmare Baal run. Crazy lucky that it dropped. Even luckier to snag both of em. I think I should quit playing while I'm ahead. lol
I put 40 hours in LK over a few weeks and did find a bunch of high runes. Players 7 with plugy. 2 ber, 5 sur, 3 vex, 4 gul, and 1 Lo. Right around 70 runs per hour.
So… do runewords basically negate the search for uniques and set armor? Because you can only put them in white/gray items, and if you have a few runeword items then you wouldn’t be getting set bonuses. Am I missing something?
Hey all! I have asked this question on one other video but figured I would ask here as well just to expand my reach some. But I played this into the ground as a kid bet never knew the importance of runes. So here’s a question I can’t find an answer to. If I’m looking at making some of these basic pieces such as Steel, Stealth, Lore, Ancients Pledge, etc. about how long will that last me until I need to upgrade? I mean, if I make/equip them at the beginning of Act 2 Normal, obviously by mid Act 3, there will be better armor to equip. Is that when I should try to go to the next tier of runes and create better armor or is the basic items I make in Act 2 good enough t to last me through that difficulty? This may be a silly question but just trying to understand upgrading better.
Hey @MrLlamaSC. What do you think about the ebug remove from d2r? I kinda think they should have left it. It was in the game forever and kinda essential to the game at this point. Imho it was used like 99% of the time on merc armors anyhow and nothing game breaking. It made mercs at least semi decent to have and worth the shitload of gold they cost to resurrect. So in the end it was a postive bug like the andy questbug and nothing that made crazy op items. I had a Merc with Infinity, Andy and a 4000+ ebug sacred armor fortitude. The dude still managed to die. That's why i don't really understand this removal.

I disagree, I don’t think mf should change it at all. Diablo 3 spoon fed the player base. The reason I love D2 is because it’s DIFFICULT.

The true Hell difficulty is grinding for those runes.

People just starting their D2 journey are in for an insane awakening to what rare actually means. I think the rarity of some of the things in D2 is part of what makes the game great, it just makes finding an HR, a griffin, or even the OG grandfather feel so good.
When D2 was new i enjoyed the 0.000001% drop-rate dringing, but now-a-days, it's not appealing to me to spend months on end without anything to show for it, which is one of the reasons why i moved on to play Median XL, great mod with high enough drop-rates that you still have those super rares but they are farmable within 2-3 weeks.

exactly what all the guides tells you. I have found 1 ber rune in 2 years. approx 1k+ hours. So the amazon is so excelent everywhere if you have only those 2 runewords.. I hope there might be some mods for singleplayer to amp the % of runes and rarest of items that have 1:15k chance to drop if you have 400 mf. And I talk singleplayer so trades and mp would stay the same.
Guide are funny and non sens like you said. Probably like 15% of player had the chance in their life to do a last wish or infinity or enigma. Most people stops after double spirit.

Those guides are insane though, talking as if a fully stacked character is required to start farming. Of course it’s most optimal but like you said a very small portion of players are that stacked so wtf is the point 🤣

My typical farming run in D2R I start off by getting getting the leg from Tristram, Quickly kill the countess, Is lower kurast run, trav run, cows, finished out with eld/shenk in a5 and pindle. Rinse repeat. It is also important to note that upgrading runes from fal thru um speeds the process up greatly in efforts to get end game runewords.
And that takes an hour because of loading screens.
@@WolfieeifloW I've revamped since D2R now I'm focusing on single areas due to no real down. Managed 56 trav runs in 1 hour netting a Ber rune Lo rune and Vex along with a few skill charms and random unique 😀 👌
Can you upgrade runes in non ladder that far? I thought it was only ladder where you can upgrade your runes to that far

I've found a BER rune in the room before andariel in a standard hell playthrough in single player. It was total unreal and my reaction was like MrLlama's at finishing his holy grail challenge :-) By the way: great videos !
what I appreciate about this video the most is the realistic expectation of how much time and commitment it takes to hunt for these runes and how to efficiently acquire them; this is a game that people HAVE to spend time with to get to the point. Other videos I've seen talk about dual wielding barbarians using things like dual wielding Grief swords and making it sound like it's the easiest damn thing to do...
To be fair grief IS easy to get, but that's only relative to other best in slots for other builds
I like that video because it's honest. High runes are hard to find and it was never meant to be otherwise. Finding one is a treat and should be spent wisely because you never know when you will find another one.

I took me years to make Infinity and Enigma on single player. So, if you are thinking of farming high runes, be mindful of that. RNG in Diablo II is hardcore.
@@AlGoYoSu I feel you! I think a lot of D2 players are like that. D2 being a 20+ years old game means most hardcore fans are in their 30s and their 40s and real life gets in the way. I kept all my single payer characters and transferred them to D2R and I am still playing with them. I don't have time to grind for thousands of hours on Bnet, so I just play offline.

Got my son lvl 80, hell act3 atm. Found pretty good gear already: titan, string, prudence, bk ring, gheed, waterwalk, 2/20 + res rare glove & highlord wrath! She’s punching heavy. Highest rune she got is Ko but she doesn’t even need anything else to finish hell

@@seanyourhero1765 Yeah, playing online is great. The Diablo community is generally awesome. I was mostly playing single player for years and it is a pain in the butt to get some of the most high-end items.
Enigma sadly is so crucial, I would wager it's a must item for every class that can't teleport end game. Can you play without it? Sure...it just means you won't be hosting any runs on your own and it will take you 2-3 times longer to do anything solo while trying to self farm for something. If you play long enough, eventually you will get the runes or something nice to stock up and trade for an enigma. I think in my entire D2 history original release, I maybe made 1-2 enigmas and the rest were traded for with a shako + high runes i found stuff like that. Sometimes people are sitting with 4 enigmas and will take something less if its exactly what they want. You have to keep your options open to obtain it any way possible otherwise you are just limiting yourself. You might never find the runes to make enigma or only find one, but you are likely to find 3 socket mage plate, a shako, SOJ, war travelers, titans, grandfather sword, doombringer, tal rashas neck (the most valuable piece of the set), many high runes or others just below the top tier in the right conditions. on the right day, 1 of these items rolled decently enough or just 2 is enough to trade for a middle of the road enigma in one move.
Finding something with teleport charges on it can be helpful as well till you can actually get an Enigma.

@@sebastienbaeyens2358 Duping and bots, ive played the game for 10+ years and never found anything above LO rune and that was only twice(once from Cows and once from the super chest behind Mephisto)... I have better luck winning the lottery than getting high runes.
Got my Vex from a rock in NM cows (full game), didn't know it was possible to drop there. Pretty informative! Never found a zod rune with few years played in the 2003-2009 time.

First, I want to say good content Llama. A lot of the runeword/rune portion of the game is going to take a while for the newcomers to understand the concept and implement it into their game play. With that being said.. NO SHAME IN MY GAME... **I USED TO BUY HI RUNES BECAUSE I WAS NOT PATIENT ENOUGH TO FARM THEM ALL MYSELF** I want that to be clear and be transparent with all the newbies because they don't seem to fully understand how hard it is to come up on all the runes to create the items. It is possible, but it takes many many many hours of farming. It's awesome to see the servers flooded with new users. Long live D2 LOD!!!!

I had my first ist drop from a super-chest in Hell Mausoleum (Burial Grounds). Also of note: in the Bazaar and Upper-K, the rock/cement structures with East-facing entrances have non-sparkly super chests (there are usually ~2 such structures in each level). The highest drop I've ever had was a 2-person game and it was from a bone-chest(?) in Hell Chaos - a Jah!

Awesome video. Also, maybe this will help my fellow blizz sorcs, if you have a decently geared merc, you can still take down the cold immunes quite easily using blizz and ice blast while he tanks countess. As long as you have atleast 17 points into cold mastery.
Been running countess but the memory cache for maps bugs out.. Having to reset the game every 3-4 runs is annoying. Having 4 maps stacked on top of one another makes navigation impossible.
So odd a 20 year old game can get it right but they cant fix it for remaster

The other day I got a LUM rune from NM Lower Kurast. Love that place back in the day and I love it in D2R.

Lower Kurast is only worth it in players 7 or 8. And if you are specifically looking for Lo runes for some reason it has better odds for dropping them in players 5 or 6. But I always did players 7 or 8 and also got some Lo runes. Lower Kurast however is so boring to run that I don't think I can do more than 10 runs in a row now before quitting. I don't think I can do thousands of runs anymore
players 8 is pretty useless for item drops tho. same chances as players 7. the only thing that it does is make the enemies even stronger and well it does give some more exp. but if you are not grinding for levels then players 7 is the best for drops. but most of the time i guess players 1 or 3 is more efficient for the killspeeds except you run gg endgame gear.

I played this game for years, my highest rune was IST from a hell countess after a few hundreds of runs. I was happy and i traded it for an alibaba. Good Times! :)
Also if you farm Meph, the council in there can drop lots of runes too. Found an Ohm there.

I have been playing D2 since the game came out, the highest rune I have been able to find is a PUL. Nothing higher has ever dropped for me.
I farmed pindle eldritch and shenk thousands of times and ive only gotten maybe 6 or 7 semi to high runes.
I've had 2 ums drop off hell countess in my last 30 runs.

Was super lucky and had a ber rune drop from a fallen in Tristram. Except it was during the maintenance a couple days ago. When I logged back in to my character after maintenance, of course my character was rolled back and my ber poofed. First ber drop off ever. You take three of the same rune and throw in a gem (gem quality depends on rune level) and it will give you one rune of the next highest quality. Its still gonna take alot of time....but not 400K runs especially when certain runes are over abundant anyway.

I started playing back when the game came out, i was probably around 12 years old, and through the years and into my teenage years, i got all kinds of uniques and runes drop, which i keep to this day on my original Necro with PlugY, but i never ever managed to build the Enigma i coveted so much, the best rune drop i probably got was a single Sur rune, back in 2013 or something.
Now in 2024, i still have all my old runes sitting in my old character, so maybe it's time to finally give it another go in D2R.
After all, what's another 20 years?

Cows drop about 10 runes per run. If the rune can be any type, you're likely to do well farming there if you have a good clear speed. My Javazon can clear at full speed about every 5-6 minutes, tac on getting the leg, call it 10 minutes running. You got about 60 rune rng per hour, or 1 per minute, so decent chance to get high runes that way. Got my runes there for Griffon's trade, and 18/19 Zon Torch, and that was probably a weeks runs, sprinkled in between rushing people.
About the last part, I love the " this is gona be hell". It will.
that comment in the beginning is one of the reasons llama is my favorite. my perception of every other youtuber is that they just think everyone's got an enigma sitting around for just any new toon rolled and it drives me nuts.
I often am successful to find runes by doing Countess runs, Countess runs and more Countess runs at the current difficulty level. At this moment at Normal difficulty. When I have slain Normal Baal, I will do Nightmare Countess runs. When I have slain Nightmare Baal, I will do Hell Countess runs from then on.
I also love to use the Horadric Cube to upgrade 3 existing runes to one rune of a higher level. Later on, I also need gems and - again - later on I need 2 instead of 3 runes for upgrading.
This game has always given me weird rng. In probably around 50,000 hours of play from when the original d2 launched before the lod expansion in the decade to follow I found 0 SOJ and a grand total of 3 HR. I actually built my wealth and gear by trading torches that I farmed non-stop after years of no return from trav, meph, chaos, and pindle runs, with a few thousand hell cows for good measure. A few near perfect p torches got me my jump start. However, I collected so many of commonly desired uniques like shako (hundreds of them) that I started giving them away to new players for free. Fun game regardless and having a blast on d2r.

if youre gonna start from scratch and youre gonna be farming mostly solo, your best bet is a Sorc, hands down (even considering the elemental immune monsters in NM and Hell). Teleport is that good of a skill for farming. so a lvl 80 sorc is going to have a much better easier time farming gear than a lvl 80 zon (provided both have around the same total gear value). imo, any non-caster class is going to have more stringent gear requirements to farm nearly as effective as a sorc. although if you farm with a trusted group, you dont need to use sorc, just one team member has to be sorc. my dream team would be a mf/gold barb, sorc, hammerdin, bone or psn necro.
In the Shared pages of the stash. Are those supposed to be accessible by all your characters? I thought that was the point, especially when you're playing single player offline but it hasn't worked for me. It also did really weird things, like I made a spirit for my sorc and logged off and when I got back it had turned into a copy of the stealth I was wearing. It also reverted all the gems I had upgraded back to chipped. Just wondering if Mr master Llama has any insight to these strange things?

I could live with a copy of stealth if my necro could access it. My sorc is an ice build anyways. I was just making runewords cause I knew diddly squat about them from back in 2008-9. I had only ever made ancients pledge once after a buddy explained to me that you could. Before I just thought most of them seemed useless except for Ral or the knock back one.
If the individual character rollbacks keep happening... then that means high rune duping will be possible if people can figure out how to trigger a rollback.

Back in the day with Diablo 2 I loved collecting Skulls. I could always get people to give me their Chipped Skulls cause they thought they were useless. Doing that I easily got Perfect Skulls for slotting 😊

If u have a friend, you can also go for hellforge runs) yo make a new char, you go from normal to hell in 20 mins, get 2 runes (from nm and hell hell’s forge quests). Repeat with new char)
To skip baal quest you also would need a 3rd person who wants a boost to baalruns in exchange for baal quest. Finding that person is the most difficult part, but it’s not that hard)
you dont get from normal to hell in 20 minutes. you get from normal act 1 to act 5 in 10 minutes if you are extremely fast. that does not include a bumper for baal. normal to hell hell forge would be at least 35 minutes if you are anyone slower than the top 10 speedrunners. and the most difficult part is finding the bumpers. so realistically it would be like 50 minutes.

Yea idk if I would've nearly enjoyed d2 as much if duping or botting hadn't existed. The botting was rampant and people being dupe scammed was sad...but at the same time there'd be so few high runes available on the market that odds are you wouldn't have been able to trade for them, or you'd have to cough up a full charm inventory or some bs.

I've done a chunk of rune farming today, found 3x ko, 1x fal, 1x lem, 1x pul, 1x um, 1x ohm and 1x sur. I think that's my rune luck used up for a while

Mr.LamaSC, where can I find a list of all the Rune Words? I've found a few sites that maybe 20, but I know there has to be crap tons more than this lists I'm finding.
Feel like the HR drop rates are higher by a mile, I only ever found 2 HR on original. And our group doing group chaos and the odd cows found an Ohm, a Lo and a Jah on the third night when we got to hell past the server issues. Definitely not complaining as it set us up very well, it's just super weird, or we were just insanely lucky

Today, I dropped a Ber on Meph. In the last 2 decades (minus preexpansion), I've finally dropped a high rune I've seen from a monster.

@@brandonhedges719 I farm ancient tunnels on hell for a while.. and 0 drops, no unique, sets, runes, completly nothing. This is ridiculous. In diablo 3 for all this time I spend i can make 5 sets

I currently have a lvl 70 sorc at Hell’s ancient. My merc is a baller with an Insight partizan that I found in nightmare cows. I’m still running Stealth. What upgrade should I get to further help my character? I got max lightning res but 18% fire res, so smoke is good, but I would lose the faster cast rate (I did find magefist yesterday though). Otherwise, I thought that Duress for my merc would make him even more of a killer. He already cleared the den for me, Lord de Seis, Nilathak and Anya by himself. Please share your thoughts on what body armor I should go for next.

act2 arcane followed by the tombs is also very good for high rune.
The key to find those are the number of player in the game. Players 1 settings will almost never drop anything... At least players 3, but I love players 7 because of the rune drop rate.
best spots for me were always chaos, wsk and lower kurast.

I restarted D2 and within a week, found a Vex and a Goldwrap from a single public Nightmare Baal run. Crazy lucky that it dropped. Even luckier to snag both of em. I think I should quit playing while I'm ahead. lol

I put 40 hours in LK over a few weeks and did find a bunch of high runes. Players 7 with plugy. 2 ber, 5 sur, 3 vex, 4 gul, and 1 Lo. Right around 70 runs per hour.

So… do runewords basically negate the search for uniques and set armor? Because you can only put them in white/gray items, and if you have a few runeword items then you wouldn’t be getting set bonuses. Am I missing something?

Hey all! I have asked this question on one other video but figured I would ask here as well just to expand my reach some. But I played this into the ground as a kid bet never knew the importance of runes. So here’s a question I can’t find an answer to. If I’m looking at making some of these basic pieces such as Steel, Stealth, Lore, Ancients Pledge, etc. about how long will that last me until I need to upgrade? I mean, if I make/equip them at the beginning of Act 2 Normal, obviously by mid Act 3, there will be better armor to equip. Is that when I should try to go to the next tier of runes and create better armor or is the basic items I make in Act 2 good enough t to last me through that difficulty?
This may be a silly question but just trying to understand upgrading better.
Hey @MrLlamaSC. What do you think about the ebug remove from d2r? I kinda think they should have left it. It was in the game forever and kinda essential to the game at this point. Imho it was used like 99% of the time on merc armors anyhow and nothing game breaking. It made mercs at least semi decent to have and worth the shitload of gold they cost to resurrect. So in the end it was a postive bug like the andy questbug and nothing that made crazy op items. I had a Merc with Infinity, Andy and a 4000+ ebug sacred armor fortitude. The dude still managed to die. That's why i don't really understand this removal.
I agree. It should be back in game. It was a high end strategy and very useful

I couldnt understand him well. Countess i understood on normal (i did that) nightmare and higher. Than what where the other runs?
Lower Kurast (pop the super chest, he has a video about it), Chaos Sanctuary (act 4 before diablo) and cow level. Also the specters in Arcane Sanctuary
I'm so happy. I found Shako and Skin of Vipermagi today from NM andariel in 100 runs 😁
