Over the years, I found myself playing Stars and Bars much more often than Comes a Time. There’s such a beautiful sincerity in the countrified first side of the album, and for me Star of Bethlehem and Will to Love have an elusive and timeless depth that endure repeated listenings. And once I experienced the full ecstacy in Neil’s guitar playing in Hurricane, this song became the standard I would compare all other guitar solos to. To this day, no guitar solo from Clapton to Hendrix to Page blows me away like Like a Hurricane.

I enjoy watching these critics talk in their cozy homes. :)

American Stars n Bars and Comes a Time are up there with my top fav. NY albums. Overall I do not like country, but I can't get enough of NY country. Truly great albums.

I'm not a big Neil Young fan but these critics say "with this and that he lost his way." Lost his way?
Even I know Young used to push the envelope with his work. That's what made him interesting. What do these critics know about being a musician testing different waters? Again, I'm not a big fan of Young but I need to defend him here. You don't like some songs pass. Young always puts something on his LPs worth listening to.
He's prolific. He has some junk, he has brilliance. But even the junk is worth a listen. I don't want to see Neil Young follow a formula. I do agree he oversaturates the market -- no one is that great at writing originals that they can consistently put LPs out that are supposed to be masterpieces.
My objection with Young is when he does things like abandoning Stephen Stills on the road. That's pathetic. Unprofessional. Not reliable. He says nothing. Just packs up and leaves Stills high and dry. I know Stills and Young remain, friends, today but if Young did that to me I wouldn't work with him again. He'd be lucky if he didn't get a broken nose. I'm not that forgiving & Neil would know that.
Politically? Well, Young is naive & idiotic, to say the least. He says & does things to a concert audience, a paying audience & they walk out. If I were his manager I'd bail on this obnoxious jerk. It's either you have a music career Neil that needs asses in the seats so you & your musicians can get paid or a soap box...not both.

AS&B is one of my favourites. Music critics seem to know fuck all about music.
