He wrote this at 17. Recorded it with Aretha Franklins producer, and didn’t like it. He went back and produced this and re-recorded it himself. He was a musical genius. Freedom ‘90 is another amazing song by George. We lost an amazing artist when he passed. Beautiful voice, beautiful writing, amazing production…one of my all time favorite songs. He even gave writing credit to his partner in the group Wham!, Andrew Ridgely , so that he would also get royalties from it, though the song was George’s creation. He was an amazing person. RIP George.

By the way, he was presented with an Ivor Novello song writing award for this song. If I’m not mistaken, I believe he still holds the record for being the youngest recipient of this award. Who writes a song at the age of 17 like this!!! This award was presented to him at a award ceremony in the UK, by Elton John, which was one of his idols when he was a little kid. Imagine how George felt to be receiving an award from one of his idols. What a surreal moment for him. More than anything, George wanted to be known as a songwriter, and this award validated him so deeply. It’s a timeless song that will go on for generations and generations. The saxophone break in this song is iconic and almost everyone knows it. I can’t believe imagine leaving a mark like this on the world.

I saw WHAM back in the 80’s, they were big but it was before it went crazy, and George sat at the front of the stage and sang Careless Whisper, unaccompanied, and it was the very first time I discovered that George could really SING. Amazing voice. Beautiful soul. The world is a colder place without him.

Cathy, I still have that crush. He was so handsome and sexy, but most off all, he had such a beautiful voice and from what I have heard, he was so kind to everyone. Is a quiet philanthropist . Didn’t want any attention whatsoever for his generosity . Truly, the sign of a person who gifts from their heart without wanting anything back . That makes him more appealing than anything else.

@rosemiller2990 I agree with you you know we had elvis who had the looks. The voice abd a generous heart as well and I think George michael is the 80's elvis because he had the sexy look. The amazing voice that melt your heart away and most of all he had a generous heart , elvis too would give strangers that he didn't even know cars money, jewelry, he gave too charities and never asked for a dime back ,he just had a beautiful heart ..and I feel George michael was exactly the same way..he sure is missed we lost him way too soon.. and we lost elvis way too soon too..

My dad would be 97 years old today if he was still alive so he grew up in the big band era, but my dad was hip in the 80s and loved the Rollng Stones, the Commodores and absolutely loved this. He would be at the local hotel night club and and a few drinks in him and would yell to the DJ to play this song, And take my mom onto the dance floor. They both were amazing dancers.

OkayRickk, please read my post to get the full true story behind the song Careless whisper told in George Michael's own words as you scroll on down in my message.
Careless whisper was written by George Michael when he was a teenager and it was about a true story about him cheating on his girlfriend and how he use to be a two timer once he grew out of his awkward stage and got rid of his glasses. He's not proud of his mistakes when he was a kid. But he was honest and shared something personal with us all in Careless whisper.
It was his first solo single, and it remains one of the greatest love songs of all time.
George Michael transformed himself overnight from a boyband member to a leading pop icon with this 1980s ballad.
But what is 'Careless Whisper' about and how was it made? Here are all the facts you need to know:
George Michael co-wrote 'Careless Whisper' with his Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley.
The pair had written it together while developing as artists in 1981 in Watford, when they were aged just 17.
George said in his autobiography Bare: "I was on my way to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I have always written on buses, trains and in cars. It always happens on journeys.
With 'Careless Whisper' I remember EXACTLY where it first came to me, where I came up with the sax line. I can remember very vaguely where I was when I wrote things after Wham! got off the ground, but with 'Careless Whisper' I remember exactly the time and place.
"I know it sounds really weird and a kind of romantic thing to say, but I remember exactly where it happened, where I was sitting on the bus, how I continued and everything. I remember I was handing the money over to the guy on the bus and I got this line, the sax line: der-der-der-der, der-der-der-der.
"Then he moved away and I continued writing it in my head. I wrote it totally in my head. I worked on it for about three months in my head."
George and Andrew took inspiration from stories from George's early romantic moments. George explained that much of the song's content is based on events from his childhood.
The song was mainly inspired by two different girls named Jane and Helen:
"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to have to chaperone my sister, who was two years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London. There was a girl there with long blond hair whose name was Jane.
"I was a fat boy in glasses and I had a big crush on her -though I didn't stand a chance. My sister used to go and do what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this girl Jane.
"A few years later, when I was sixteen, I had my first relationship with a girl called Helen. It had just started to cool off a bit when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in just around the corner from my school.
"She had moved in right next to where I used to stand and wait for my next-door neighbour, who used to give me a lift home from school. And one day I saw her walk down the path next to me and I thought - now where did SHE come from? She didn't know it was me.
"It was a few years later and I looked a lot different. Then we played a school disco with [his band] The Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. By this time she was that much older and a big buxom thing - and eventually I started seeing her. She invited me in one day when I was waiting for my lift and I was...in heaven."
Explaining that after he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties, he continued: "And the girl who didn't even see me when I was twelve invited me in. So I went out with her for a couple of months but I didn't stop seeing Helen. I thought I was being smart - I had gone from being a total loser to being a two-timer.
"And I remember my sisters used to give me a hard time because they found out and they really liked the first girl. The whole idea of 'Careless Whisper' was the first girl finding out about the second - which she never did.
"But I started another relationship with a girl called Alexis without finishing the one with Jane. It all got a bit complicated. Jane found out about her and got rid of me... The whole time I thought I was being cool, being this two-timer, but there really wasn't that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty about the first girl - and I have seen her since - and the idea of the song was about her.
"'Careless Whisper' was us dancing, because we danced a lot, and the idea was - we are dancing...but she knows...and it's finished."
So that concluded the story of Carelss Whisper.
I had a huge crush on George Michael when I was a kid and teen. And he was so sexy in this video.
I guess I shouldn't have been suprised with my own dumb luck that he turned out gay.

That instrument is a saxophone, and it's sole purpose is to emit sound to induce the need for love making and sexy times. There is no telling how many generations of people were conceived while a saxophone was playing in the background during conception. Perhaps that is why the current generations aren't all that smart, is offended by everything, is narcissistic, and has bad taste in music because they weren't conceived while a saxophone was playing in the background. Does correlation equal causation? After all, there has been a steady decline in mainstream but good sax music, so you be the judge. 🤣
I heard this during the 80s, but watching Deadpool made me want to revisit this classic 80s tune.
