I just discovered you today and I have to say that you are like me. I'm a 52 year old metal head who when I found Band-Maid I was BODYSLAMMED and I was honestly gobb-smacked. The more I heard them I became more "sucked in" I don't know that I have ever heard a band that was so complete on every level. Everything about this has me infatuated. I wish I understood Japanese because I think that would take this to another level. I missed them here in the US by a month, I am ANXIOUSLY awaiting them to come back and it will probably be 2025. Misa is a bass goddess, Akane is a gorilla drum goddess. I can't get over how much they sync with each other and seem to enjoy doing what they do and love their fans.
Akane (dr) and MISA MISA MISA (ba) were schoolmates. MISA MISA MISA is also known as "the barefoot assassin" as she plays barefoot so she can feel the drumbeats through the stage. Her and Akane are always locked. Kanami is the composer and as long as that metronome Akane is playing she will never make a misstep either. The relationship is the essence of BAND MAID.
Talk about a big WALL of beautiful SOUND!! AC/DC - Thunderstruck - the familiar riff. This band has exceptional compositional skills. Saiki's voice is growing stronger every year.
Kanami is very influenced by jazz in the way she structures things and handles references. She treats very heavy metal as if it was jazz. Reminds me of Weather Report.
One of their heaviest songs yet, there is an Acoustic live version of this with just Saiki and Kanami. Same song, but undeniably and beautifully different. Whether you do a reaction or not, it's well worth a listen. Could listen to you talk about BAND MAID all day. Thanks.
As with a lot of rock and metal bands, many of BM's heavier numbers are in E flat or D (below the open bottom E string of a 4 string bass), and Misa has been using that B-string on her bass to great effect ever since she started using a 5 string a couple of years (and albums) after Band-maid formed. I fckn LOVE it!
Excellent analysis. I especially liked the concept of 360 degrees when writing the song, opening and closing the theme they have developed. It's something I hadn't thought about until now. Thank you!. Puzzle has always been one of my favorites, that amazing riff...
Anyone who’s seen them live can tell you that they put on an incredible live show, and that no video can capture their full stage presence or the feeling of the energy that flows between them and the audience.
Great reaction! It's a joy to hear you talk about our favorite Maids! I would highly suggest checking out their latest drop 'Hate?' Live! You will NOT be disappointed! 😉 😎🤘
Your 5th element (passion, joy) is indeed palpable at one of their shows. They feed off of the crowd, and when I saw them at one of their "one man shows", the crowd basically started at 10 out of 10 to begin with. Then the maids started playing, and the needle was pinned for the night. The crowd itself was so loud I needed earplugs, and they do such an fan-interactive show anyway, it's just a massive party. Do not miss one of their shows, if you get the chance.
Love and appreciate your thoughtful reactions to the Maids. Please encourage your radio colleagues to START PLAYING THEIR SONGS to whatever extent they can in the corporatized world of modern radio.
Never made the Thunderstruck connection but now I can’t unhear it. Same thing with the song No God and it connecting with Ace of Spades. You are right about Saiki maturing and mastering her voice and you are 💯 right about being there live. I’ve seen them 11 times and 10 of those in the front row on the rail. There is nothing like it.
Excellent reaction! The song is about a woman that's in a relationship with a married man where she'll never be number one and the heartache that follows. The acoustic version, with just acoustic guitar and vocals really hits harder emotionally.
If no one has said it already, you really need to check out Saiki and Kanami's acoustic version of this song. It's a real tear jerker. This one is angry ... the acoustic version is heart break. The lyrics worth reading.
Thank you for your continued reactions to Band Maid, much appreciation for your thoughts and observation, you have such a great wealth of knowledge and share it quite eloquently
It's been said the Band Maid teaches you HOW to listen to music. I've enjoyed listening to them for years, but not being a musician, they are the first band that has made me ask, "Why do I enjoy listening to them?". Your reactions to Band Maid greatly help in answering that question. After listening to your comments, I go back and listen to the song again and start to understand a little bit more each time. Thanks!
If you haven't done it yet watch HATE? live from Yokahama Arena, the tenth anniversary tour. There's a whole bass/guitar throw down that might actually impress you. They did it at Lalapalooza 2023 but this version is much better. You won't be sorry if you do it.

Yes, I have seen them live twice and both times they were off the charts... I have seen so many rock bands (starting with Iron Maiden / Quite Riot), none of those compare to the connection I have with Band-Maid. Very difficult to describe and my friends generally think I'm obsessed or nuts :). Thanks for the reaction to an awesome song, now that you have heard that you should check out the acoustic version with just Saiki and Kanami (Zepp maybe?). It is special as well.

I recently saw Puzzle from the Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concert (for the millionth time ;-) and as I occasionally email Band-Maid management, the Studio Coast performance, sound, and vibe is 20% better than The Garden concert -- and that concert is better than 90% of most other concerts. I guess they just wanted to promote their release of the Garden concert, which is something all Band-Maid fans should think about getting -- especially with that 90 minute, behind-the-scene, 2022 USA tour DVD/BD. I’ve seen it and it’s a fascinating look into the Maids lives on the road. Thx, Eric!
That's my favorite full band version of Puzzle. It's just crazy that the Studio Coast 2017 DVD was limited release only. I actually slightly prefer it to the Zepp 2018 DVD. There are some good Akasaka Blitz Jan 9 2017 clips out there if you go looking.

Great reaction Eric. Great request MIKUDAYO. IMO one of the best bands arouund with one of the best rhythm sections irrespective or east or west, male or female. Kanami the guitarist is such a good composer innovative but able to use her influences constructively
Thanks for the great reaction. Refreshing to see puzzle again instead of the newbie trend of suggesting Hate. Love all Band-Maid music but am appreciating some of the older tunes that many BM fans havent heard yet. These ladies have a long list of great songs and love when new Band-Maid fans discover them instead of rehashing on the popular trends of the day. Either way, the word "disappointment" should never be used in the same sentence with Band-Maid unless used as a "disappointment" for not hearing "ANY" song they've done. Your reaction format is something many reactors should take notes on how to do it right. Again, great reaction.
One thing BM has no problem with is using automation with vocal doubling, parallel harmonizers/vocalizers, and the like on both Saiki and Miku to make those rich and layered vocals live. For me, it really makes the sound. The gear available nowadays is so good live, it makes harmony tracks nearly obsolete.
Great reaction and the AC/DC riff is probably now in everyone's DNA. Thanks for reacting to Band-Maid again and yes, they have been improving every year, especially during the pandemic where in Japan everyone was locked down tight and the girls went into extreme practice mode, focused on improving their skills. When they started touring again in 2022 in the U.S, they had some issues getting back into the touring mode, Kanami suffered from exhaustion during their second to last show. But now they are on fire again and their last show for 2024 was a 3.5 hour, 33 song concert to close out their 10th anniversary tour.
Absolutely ACDC. Kanami's favorite guitar players are Carlos Santana, Larry Carlton Ritchie Kotzen and and she has mentioned a handful of others. But, I think kanami in her heart likes Dirty rock ( ACDC, Gun's and Roses, etc.) on a number of songs I especially like, Miku's spotlight song Rock in Me. Kanami Misa and Akane really bring their rock girl chops on this. They need an official live version of this.
Man if Band-Maid did an official cover of a western band, I'd love AC/DC and especially of Thunderstruck. They actually did a rough cover of a Slip Knot song, just instrumentals.
There’s some footage out there of them doing a tiny. bit of Master of Puppets. I’m sure a lot of people would be annoyed if they were seen to be copying other rock and metal bands but it would be awesome if they did kind of a cover medley during a concert. If they kept it instrumental it would avoid the language issue…
Phenomenal vocals. Love the guitar, sometimes it reminded me of things I couldn't place, though a couple places made me think of the Steve N' Seagulls version of "Thunderstruck".

I think the original version is even better. Though BAND-MAID consider themselves to be Hard Rock, Metal certainly are among their many influences.
