    Dr. Yueh is an Imperial Suk doctor which is not explained in the movie at all. They were incredible doctors and their mental conditioning supposedly prevented any betrayal of patients or the possibility of taking a human life. The diamond tattoo is a sign of Yueh's completed training as a Suk doctor. For him to betray the House Atreides is an unthinkable event in the minds of the Duke and his family in the book.

    A few seconds before the Gom Jabar scene, we can see Paul rubbing his neck at the very spot of the needle. Which could then signify and reinforce the birth of his clairvoyance and his vision at this crucial period transcending time and space, which he already knew without really knowing what was going to happen. It's a detail that I find very effective on Paul's future powers.

  • @yanngoffin2073

    @14:34 The line "I recognize your stride old man" of Paul close to the harvester, seconds before Gurney grab him and put him on his feet as the worm is getting close, is related to the previous scene between Gurney and him just before they sparing. Paul recognizes the stride of Gurney when he come in the training room. Later at the beginning of the fight he call him "Old Man".

      It's a really clever line. He's also talking to the worm, which the Fremen call 'old men of the desert' in the books. Paul does not have this vocabulary, nor has he seen a worm before, but his prescience makes him feel a familiarity with the worms he has not yet developed.

    The beauty of this film is Director Villaneuve's use of minimalism in the presentation of exposition and the historical backgrounds of this vast fictional world. Some will complain that many of the central side characters of Herbert's novel were given short shrift, (Gurney, Thufir Hawat, Piter DeVries), and in a way they are right when you consider how much attention they are given in the book,. However, the central focus (in both the book and the film) must rest on Paul and his relationship with his mother, the Bene Gesserit, Lady Jessica. At it's core, Dune is the story of a heroes journey (as flawed as he will become in the second half of this two film work), the main focus must always be on him (a great parallel to DUNE is LAWRENCE OF ARABIA-another fascinating heroes journey about a flawed deity) The side characters are just that, peripheral characters that are there to help propel the hero forward, later to emerge as changed by the events of this first film as Paul is a we watch him.
    Simplicity, in the film, is the name of the game, and aside from the 5 minutes of exposition that is heard by Chani (in voice-over) at the start of the film, there really isn't much else we need to know that Villaneuve won't present to us visually in certain spots during the movies run time. Personally, I don't need a half hour of film time devoted to the pages of description of what a Mentat is. Villaneuve boils the definition of these people down to a lightning speed moment of Thufir Hawat rolling his eyes over white, when Leto asks how much was spent to bring the "Herald of the Change" to Calaldan, and, upon rerolling his eyes, gives a precisely detailed answer of "141.6 Solaris". Villaneuve and the writes , and the performance of Stephen McKinly Henderson, immediately inform the viewer that Thufir is a kind of human computer. Also in the details of the scene is the burgundy colored stain down the middle of Thufir's bottom lip. At first the appearance of the stain would seem like some little flourish concocted by the make-up designer of the film. n actuality, the stain is more of the visual simplicity and slight-of-hand employed by the director and his writing crew. If the viewer is paying full attention, they'll notice that the character of Piter (the Baron's assistant of the Planet Geidi Prime) is not only in a eyes-rolled-over-white trance when Rabban (Dave Bautista) enters the steam room, but also bears the same burgundy colored stain down the middle of his lip. These details are "visual exposition", the way of conveying details in quick time. The red stain on both men's lip signifies to the viewer that both Thufir AND Piter are human computers.
    But, the visual exposition doesn't stop there. Throughout the film the director builds our awareness to details referring to events and characters that are only given short blasts of verbal representation. Dune is based on a book, and as all cinephiles will say: BOOKS ARE BOOKS, MOVIES ARE MOVIES. The way of telling a story on the page is vastly different to the way the director presents the same story on the screen in visual terms. DUNE is a 500 page book that devotes whole chapters to describing the various worlds, orders and characters that inhabit the writers mind. Had Villaneuve and company decided to present every word and situation described in the book, the film would be an out-of-control mess bordering on a run-time of 24 hours.
    Simplicity, brought through visual exposition and definition, is what makes this film adaptation of Dune so extraordinary. It moves quickly, yet really leaves no stone unturned. It's an expertly paced, beautifully realized, and finitely detailed adaptation of a book many, including myself, thought was impossible to bring to the screen in a coherent fashion.
    What we got is, in my opinion, the best film of 2021.

I went and saw this movie in theaters the day it released (ended up watching it again at home on HBO Max because I enjoyed it sooooo much) I was easily able to understand the plot and pretty much everything that was going on throughout the movie. I have since started watching/listening to Dune lore videos and stuff like that to get even more context to things in the movie and Dune universe in general, but I hadn’t done that before watching the movie the first time and I enjoyed it greatly and wasn’t lost at any point. My wife who’s not really into “nerdy” things like this (she’ll watch movies and stuff with me but wouldn’t do it on her own) and she liked it, probably not as much as I did, but she did enjoy it thoroughly and she wasn’t really confused or stuck behind at all during the movie and was able to keep up with it all the way through it!

    I am a fan of Dune since around 1974 and read all of the follow on novels. I have also seen both the 1984 film and the 2000 III part series made for Sci-fi TV. After watching the new 2021 film I must say that of all of the different films, the latest comes closest visually to what I imagined when reading this classic so long ago. All of the various films fall short of recreating the actual dialogue of the stories, as well as having changed or omitted scenes that those who are purists are well aware of. I think that considering the constraints of time allowed, budgets, technology and factors known only to the producers, writers, directors and actors involved, it is amazing what has been accomplished so far. Art is a very subjective viewpoint, but then again it wouldn't be art if it was any other way. My congratulations to all involved for the efforts made so far. I have found something to love about this film and all the other attempts. I doubt I could have done better myself. Thanks to all who were involved for such a unique film. I look forward to the sequel.

      The demand was not its hallucinogenic affects. It gives some people prescience and allows the Bene Gesserit and the Guild to have the amazing abilities that they have. With no spice there would be no interstellar travel, or it would be much more dangerous. Before the guild’s ability to safely fold space due to their spice fueled transformation, many ships were lost. I’d say that’s the #1 reason for its demand.

    The scene with Mapes and Jessica has a lot more to it which is clarified in the book. When Jessica says the knife is a 'maker', she is about to say it is a 'maker of death', meaning it is a weapon used to kill people. Jessica is interrupted from finishing however, because as soon as Mapes hears 'maker' she cries out, as 'maker' is what the Fremen call the sandworms (the worms have a god-like status to the Fremen). Mapes cries out like this because, on Arrakis, there is a prophecy of the Lisan al-Gaib (the voice from the outer world) who will bring them to better times, who will arrive with his mother. Jessica seemingly knowing that the crysknife is made from the tooth of a sandworm, and then calling it a 'maker', confirms this prophecy in Mapes' mind. To add to all this, the prophecy of the Lisan al-Gaib was 'planted' among the people of Arrakis by the Bene Gesserit as part of something they call the Missionaria Protectiva, which is their way of planting superstition within more primitive cultures in order to control and influence them for their own needs.

      This, before navigators there was a massive mortality rate among those using the holtzmann drive because of the massive amount of calculations neccesary to safely fold space for which they didn't have computers, thus the navigator with limited prescience was used to see into possible futures and find the one where they don't blow up. Also, Duncan never leaves Paul and Jessica after finding them, and instead is simply in a side room of the research station they are in, when the attack comes, so he goes out into the hallway and closes and seals the door behind him, to fight off the Sadakour so Paul and his mother can escape. Additionally Paul’s visions of the future holy war start overnight while in the tent with his mother, which was before Duncan found them.
    Not sure where these ideas came from, but you completely mixed up what happens in the tent and in the testing facility, not to mention added in a few extra scenes, such as the thopter battle around Paul and Jessica, Duncan leaving them, finding out Liet is the leader of the Fremen, which we don’t find out, not to mention making it seem like Paul and his mother crash and run into the worm and Fremen immediately afterwards, instead of at least half a day later, etc…
    One other thing, Jamis is also he shown in the early scene, with Chani narrating, and showing the spice harvester being nighted at night, he’s the first Attacker shown, and as I recall has a large lasrifle.

    Many years ago I read Frank Herbert's classic, I recall not being able to put it down and feeling disappointment that it ended. I remember the characters being memorable and having depth as well as a meaningful relationship with Paul. The story was layered and detailed. The movie I just watched was amazing for it's scenery but none of the characters were fleshed out , none of the relationships were developed and the story was presented like cliff notes as though it was assumed that the viewer was familiar with the content and didn't need any background information. Every character seemed shortchanged with a cameo appearance or walk on. It occurred to me by the end that this may have been better presented as a ten or fifteen hour series rather than in movie form.

      Why is it so hard for you guys to realize that part one is story building because Dune is such a complex movie and that part two will be where the majority of the character development will happen? It’s so obvious that part one is meant to prepare you for the character’s relationships and developments to their destiny. There were no assumptions. They literally explained everything and the things they didn’t explain, they showed you. You saw Paul’s relationship with his father and mother. You saw Paul say that he isn’t sure if he should be Duke. You saw his father be a moral leader. I don’t know what else needed to happen for you to understand the motives of these characters. You guys are so used to melodramatic and overly expressive emotions that you don’t know how to understand very direct and straightforward personalities.

      This is 100% correct. Villeneuve is a cinematic artiste, beautiful looking visuals, but he's no storyteller. He did the same with that other SF classic - Blade runner.
      And your request for a series, with time to flesh out characters, has already been answered: 'Frank Herbert's Dune' (2000) from Sci Fi channel is a superior telling of the Dune story. It's viewable on TH-cam.

      This is a beautiful and powerful movie. But there is a lot of really valuable information left out about the characters. It does seem to be a high level view of the story versus a deep exploration of the characters. I think some of the mystery is in the acting itself because I know the story. This movie makes me wonder about script writing and how decisions are made about what goes on and what doesn't. This story deserves an investment on the level of LOTR.

    The spice doesn't allow for FTL travel. It gives the navigators the ability to fold space, that is travelling without moving, in a safe manner. FTL existed way before Holzmann, whether you go for the Encyclopedia or the BH/KJA work. He lived in a time where the galaxy had already been explored. I don't understand why people who call themselves Dune experts, cannot understand this basic fact.

      You're confused! Guild Navigators (And melange) are used to predict a safe path for the heighliners from point A to point B. The Holtzman effect is what folds space and thereby allows the starships to travel great distances across the universe instantaneously.
      The connection between faster than light travel and the Holtzman Effect is not explicitly mentioned by Frank Herbert. It is a connection made in the prequel novels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

I encourage all of the Dune fanboys to convince me that Dune will be a classic like some of the movies on this list. Personally, I watched Dune and will never watch it again, but I could watch some of the amazing movies on this list once a year for the rest of my life. I don't think Dune even compares to some of the movies on this list. Do you know why Dune has such a high rating? I certainly do. It's because fanboys give 10/10 ratings, which means they think Dune is a PERFECT movie. Perfect cast, perfect screenplay, etc. Well, I strongly disagree. This is a perfect example of why ratings are absolute BS. I can't wait to hear a ridiculous reply from a delusional Dune fanboy.

    Well, the movie ended by Paul accepting his faith as the kwisatz haderach. Which has much deeper implications... Being a messiah to the Fremen is partially irrelevant but comes with the same birth-right.

    A lot of people are referring to Paul as a Gary-Stu. I don't think this is accurate. He is fallible, he earned what he has in training with the bene geserit breeding aside. They all can technically get mentat training, or to become a soldier, all women can technically become bene gesserit, Paul lost against Gurney and then tied with him in fighting, so he's not perfect. I think Paul already has training in the Weirding way so he can control his reflexes with lighting fast movements but he later gives that to all the Fedaykin too. Having advantages over your opponent alone does not make you a gary-stu and if you say he's a God, technically he's not yet. The only time Paul is actually being threatened in the film is with the gom jabbar and his fight with Jamis. He merely had an advantage over the Harkonnen in the Ornathopter and over Jamis when disarming him, was just lucky with the hunter seeker, had no shield or weapon and Mapes saved him because it changed target, and Paul was just training with Gurney where Gourney won. I notice that Gary-stu's or Mary-sues, they never earn anything, don't really fail, don't lose tests or not know the answer. This simply doesn't apply to Paul, and most importantly he is imperfect, has flaws, doesn't always overpower other characters. In fact a ,ajor point of Dune is that he's seen as a savior but this is just a thing placed by the bene gesserits as they go about creating something similar. I mean the Fremen even have a reverend mother sayyadina, and they are all bene gesserits. It's almost like bene gesserits are as important to each coulture as mentats are to rulers, even though bene gesserits are known to be self-serving.

    • @Shan_Dalamani
      @Shan_Dalamani 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "all women can technically become bene gesserit" - WTF? No, they cannot. You can't just walk up to the chapterhouse and fill out an application. Most BG are born into the organization and anyone who comes into it from outside has to be leaps and bounds OUTSTANDING in her abilities and potential. Given the patriarchal nature of the Imperium, this isn't easy.

    • @biff647019
      @biff647019 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Shan_Dalamani Well I guess if you decide I was saying that it's so easy anyone can do it, that must be what I was saying and not that any woman that has spent her whole life training could do it. Like astronauts could come from anywhere, and obviously they have to train very hard and the best rise to the top. So I fail to see how what I said is wrong.

    • @Shan_Dalamani
      @Shan_Dalamani 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@biff647019 You are missing the point entirely. The Bene Gesserit, if they want you (assuming you're female), THEY will recruit you. Or they will assign a Breeding Mother to conceive you. At birth, you're separated from your birth mother and trained and taught and mentored by other BG. YOU do not just walk into a Chapterhouse and fill out a job application. That isn't how it works, or at least not how it did through most of that organization's history - which began long before the Butlerian Jihad, in spite of what those two idiots wrote in the nuDune novels. They will train people, possibly accept people if they consider them good enough - human enough (I wonder if Jessica considered putting Farad'n through the Gom Jabbar test... I don't recall that ever being mentioned in Children of Dune).

    • @biff647019
      @biff647019 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Shan_Dalamani So you said what I said, they will accept people if they consider them good enough. I fail to see the disagreement. Plus, isn't the purpose pf the breeding program to create the quizat haderach? So not all of them have to be borne into it, just the ones whose genes are crucial. The best of the best will be recruited and be subservient or serve less genetically crucial roles. What's Gaius helen mohiams genetic importance?

    • @Shan_Dalamani
      @Shan_Dalamani 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@biff647019 Oh, please. Do you seriously think that the entirety of the Bene Gesserit's time and resources were put toward producing the Kwisatz Haderach? Of course they weren't.
      Mohiam has no relevance for the KH program, other than ordering Jessica to conceive a son with Duke Leto, if in fact she's the one who gave Jessica that order.

  • @williamstafford8310

    The Box of pain is not activated by The Reverend Mother's power that she's pouring into it; rather it's a forbidden device produced by IX, and is of their design. She activates, and deactivates. Her scream is her empathy and frustration that Jessica could produce a son that can thwart their schemes.

    Very good. Only one mistake. The current homeworld of house Corrino (at the time the film takes place) is NOT Selusa Secundus. Yes, this planet WAS the original homewold of the Corrino's but, according to the book, the stronger and more dangerous the Sardaukar became, the more impossible it was for House Corrino to feel secure living there. House Corrino relocated to the planet Kaitain, leaving Selusa Secundus to the Sardaukar and to become a military base. As shown, correctly in the film, Selusa Secundus has now been shifted into a training ground for new and old Sardaukar soldiers.

    I must have been the only person in the entire theater who did not enjoy Dune.
    I understand that people are falling in love with the setting, but the characters are so incredibly flat and one dimensional that it ruined the entire thing for me. The "epic" battles and grand scope of things mean nothing if you don't care about who is in them.
    I'm genuinely baffled at how anyone could have become THIS invested in this movie.
    What am I missing here? Is the setting just THAT good? Good enough to excuse such bland characters and exposition? Good enough to excuse the incomplete story?
    To whoever reads this, I'm genuinely curious about your thoughts. I want to like this movie. I'm trying to convince myself that it's good. But I just haven't seen anything that has done so.

      I concur with your assessment. I've watched this woeful celliod adaptation, twice, back to back, and with the exception to a couple of interpretations in regards to carryalls, thopters, and costume design, there will not be a third. Part two holds no interest even by these examples, because as you stated the story line has been skewed beyond comprehension to the knowledgeable reader. At 63 years of age and avid reader of all things Herbert l have no hopes of ever seeing a version that holds true to nuances of character that in essence tells the story as written.

    I love how Jessica, just like in the book, clearly wanted to say more than "A maker" to Mapes (A maker of death was what she wanted to say).
    I don't like how shields don't seem to do anything during Duncan's last stand - all stabs are quick, but still penetrate the shields.

    • @rushthezeppelin
      @rushthezeppelin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it seems like they changed the shields up slightly to where they just slow fast projectiles/strikes instead of deflect them. If you will notice also in the scene where Yueh darts Leto the dart is just significantly slowed. I don't think it's a massive deal as long as they retain the explosive reaction of lasguns and shields (which I think they did mention but didn't show).
